The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
silverpoodleman replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Apologies - I used it to separate the two different purchases. Otherwise, it just appeared to be a big jumble of the 42 games. I was trying to prevent headaches. -
Some of you talk about how easy it is. I like it because I find it quite challenging. At first, I wasn't able to complete the first screen for, oh, the first 98 attempts. It is a VERY satisfying accomplishment to finally get there. After all, isn't that what makes these games so much fun? You keep playing until you figure it out - kinda like life (uh-oh - to philosphical - dial it down man!)

SOLAR FOX on the 2600 is possibly the best 2600 game ever while the arcade game had too much stuff that detracted from playability. -

What is the best system for sports games?
silverpoodleman replied to silverpoodleman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I'm sure it has to do with the theory that "playing is better than watching." Personally, I love the feel of a nine-inning game, a five-set match, eighteen-holes of match play, four quarters of bone crunching, up-the-middle-smash-mouth football or two-halves of college basketball - real time - players who get tired and injured - managers who make pitching changes - the ability to changes lines and put in a more defensive oriented line to protect a lead while the precious seconds tick away. If you have a loyalty to a sports team, you can be them - just like when we were kids pretending to be big leaguers. Even if you have no loyalty to a team, you can still enjoy the game for the games sake. I just picked up nine genesis football games for $3.50 (MADDEN 96, COLLEGE FOOTBALL USA 97, JOHN MADDEN FOOTBALL 93, BILL WALSH COLLEGE FOOTBALL, MADDEN 94, COLLEGE FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, NFL 95, NFL FOOTBALL 94, AND TROY AIKMAN FOOTBALL) and earlier this week got 33 (mostly) sports themed games on ebay for $18.50 + shipping (THE JUNGLE BOOK, WORLD SERIES BASEBALL, FIFA INTERNATIONAL SOCCER, SPORTS TALK FOOTBALL 93, TECMO SUPER BASEBALL, BOXING LEGENDS OF THE RING, NHLPA HOCKEY 93, RISK, SPORTS TALK BASEBALL, MARIO LEMIEUX HOCKEY, NHL 94, ROYAL RUMBLE, X-MAN, NBA JAM, FERRARI GRAND PRIX CHALLENGE, GREATEST HEAVYWEIGHTS, JURASSIC PARK, HOCKEY, NHL 95, NHL 96, NHL 97, JUNGLE STRIKE, BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD, THE BEACHED SURFER DUDE!, NFL QUARTERBACK CLUB 96, STIMPY'S INVENTION, TERMINATOR 2 - JUDGMENT DAY, TRIPLE SCORE, PRIME TIME NFL FOOTBALL, NO ESCAPE, INSTRUMENTS OF CHAOS - YOUNG INDIANA JONES, NHL ALL-STAR HOCKEY 95, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2). Not a bad couple of scores, huh? -
I love video sports - or rather, I should say that back in the day, I loved video sports - hockey, baseball, golf, football, tennis, soccer etc., The current gaming systems look incredible but do not have the playability that Sega Genesis had (the last game system I owned). Now that I am getting back into video sports games, what is the best system and best games in which to experience the best playability? I will sacrifice great graphics for great gameplay anyday. Thanks for your help!

45.34 seconds...........gettin' better - inch by inch!!!!!!!!!! Of course, I've hit Game Reset about 1,000 times already. I 've hit so many trees my wife is calling me "George of the Jungle!" ********UPDATE********* 41.03!!!!!!!!!!! (though I haven't come within two seconds of that score all week so it is not like I could do it again!)

For someone with such strong opinions, one would think you were a Sega expert. No offense, but you remind me of those people who condemn books without actually having read them. I think this posting was designed for people who have a knowledgable opinion, not those who picket movies they haven't seen. Again, no offense, and no real need to reply. Just know that nobody wants to hear the opinion of someone who has nothing real to contribute.

I suppose I might stick out like a sore thumb, but I love Genesis. I think the problem is that when it was the new hot 16-bit game system out there, there were so many crappy games that sold for $50, $60, or even $70, just to keep pace with NES's crappy $50, $60, and $70 games. As a casual gamer at the time, I did not read gaming magazines and there was certainly no web-site dedicated to reviewing the games. It was a crap shoot unless you had friends/relatives who took the plunge before you. I think looking back at the system, knowing what games are worthwhile and what games suck AND, now being able to get a previously $60 priced game for a few bucks makes the gaming experience all the sweeter. Last, I happen to think that the playability on some of those games that were released in the mid-90's were among the best of any sports games ever made. I'd trade great graphics for great playability any day. Then again, I still love the atari 2600 (215 carts and acounting - Pong anyone?)

Maybe I'm just too bleary-eyed from sleepiness...

Frankly, it looks more like the "Hannibal-the-Cannibal-guard-Angel" from Silence of the Lambs - think about - you know the scene. -
Boy, you RPGer's sure do love this game. Through three "long" forum discussions, time studying the manual, and a revised attitude when I tried this game again.....sorry, it didn't take. I still do not get it (admittedly b/c I did not have this game in the 70's when it first came out and thus, did not get wrapped up in how cool home it was for the D&D set to have RPG games on a TV set which you could control - was that a run-on sentence?). Fortunately, I got two new games in the mail today which I have been waiting for - Ram It! and Thrust + Platinum. I think I'll keep Adventure on the shelf for now. Good luck for all of you who love Adventure and yearn to play it as often as I love to play Solar Fox!

"what do you mean there's only one button?!?!?!
silverpoodleman replied to silverpoodleman's topic in Atari 2600
That quote, plus the one from my nephew becomes more and more relavent as time goes by. Hey, if my quote is used, do I get a free t-shirt? I would also suggest that if t-shirts are produced, larger sizes be made available for those of us who are tall and/or, well, larger in the middle (I'm both - Hey 6'7" can carry some weight!) -

Damn, I should have thought of that - I use a cane! Funny as hell - F-U-N-N-Y!!! -
(First time ever playing - 43.96) Further disasters to come! OOOPS - Wrong Game - Actual 1st score is 52.24 ***UPDATE**** 48.64 BTW, I had this in my collection but hadn't played it yet. IT IS AWESOME!!!!!. GREAT SELECTION. I'll have lots of fun trying to better my time this week!

That question of your nephew's would be a nice phrase to put on a t-shirt with the joystick image. This suggestion was based on something my twelve-year old nephew said when I explained my Atari 2600 to him. Frankly, I'd love to have a t-shirt like this. Is there anyone at AA I could suggest this to?

I've got Spy Hunter but haven't gotten into it yet. It's on the list though! If I remember, Spy Hunter includes shooting other cars. Well, I ain't from L.A. - all I wanna do is nudge them into the guard rail a few times or, you know, off a bridge. Nothing violent, like guns - just King of the Road stuff. I should say that despite my affinity for the atari, it does absolutely nothing for my wife. Of course, she never had a video game system in her house while she was growing up (seven kids - food, yes - atari, no). I've tried to pull her in so we could enjoy the atari experience together, but she is much more interested in redesigning the house. Anyway, she begrudgingly tried BnJ and was immediately hooked, refusing to give up the joystick. (Eureeka!)

I've been following and participating in the forums for a bit now and I feel as if it is my time to contribute to the benefit of the world. I know many, if not most, of the M Network games get a bad rap on these pages. However, I must point out how amazing I have been finding the M Newtwork game Bump N Jump. Not only is it incredibly fun, but I swear it helps me decompress from a long commute where you feel like running idiot drivers off the road! In this game, you get to nudge/edge/bump other cars and trucks off the road. You also have to jump over breaks in the highway (a la "Speed") or, better yet, jump up and land on other cars ( a la "Dukes of Hazzard" or "Knight Rider"). Sadly, there are no real cars with spike's that spring out from the tires so you can take out the tires of the guy next to you (a la "Grease" and the box car episode of "The Simpsons"). Until those become legal, we must find alternatives to killing those who p*ss us off! The thing is that I find myself thinking about Bump N Jump when I am driving in traffic. Even better, when I get home, I put in this game and "bump" the idiots off the road who just added to my nightmarish ride home. So, to my friends on the AA forum - ease your tensions and legally wash your cares away as you run idiots off the road just like you always wanted to!

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!! It took some time but I finally improved! Sorry, but no digital camera, cell phone camera or scanner (is there any other way to provide proof of the score?) 43, 880 and that is it. I'm done with this game! Anyone wanna buy a slightly used Galaxian cartridge that has been recently dented by someone whacking it with a six-iron? It also is slighly flatter than most 2600 carts because it accidentally got run over seven or eight times by a rather large SUV. Nonetheless, I guarantee you'll get as much enjoyment as I did when I played it (smile).

I'm getting that. And I totally agree with you. In fact, I am now feeling rather stupid for posting that question. It only took a few emails to turn me around on the subject. BUT, IF PEOPLE CAN LEARN FROM MY STUPIDITY THEN MY EXISTENCE HAS MEANING (YES!) I am sitting here with fifteen years in marketing and sales, mostly in executive management and creative development and I keep coming up with ways to get the word out to all the people like us, for who the Atari 2600 represented a leap from the earth to the moon, just how fun, rewarding and just plain cool getting reacquainted with the 2600 is. Frankly, I'm a little shocked that more people aren't regressing to the games of their youth. As 40 is coming and then goes, we look for things that make us feel like we did when we were young. And since Catherine Bach is not available, activities like Atari do just that. I have found that most people, even kids who look at this and scoff at how rudimentary it is (as if they had something to do with the development of the PS2) cannot deny how fun it is once you get started. My favorite quote came from my nephew - "what do you mean there's only one button?!?!?" Even before I got back into atari, I got back into spinner baseball (or Cadeco All-Star Baseball). It is how we used to play baseball before video games when it was raining. Again, my eight-year old absolutely LOVES spinner baseball AND LOVES ATARI. The Atari 2600 is not dead. There is a future out there and it does not need to be in those awful 10-in-1 joystick games (I have a bunch and the only good one is the tetris). So to recap, thank you for your words. I have been converted.

Ken, All I can say to you and to the other people who homebrew is a big THANK YOU. It is amazing how engrossed I have become in this 28-year old piece of technology - and how quickly it happened! I paid full price for Gunfight and for Thrust+Platinum and I'm at the point where there are fewer and fewer older titles out there on my want list. I would rather pay more for a great game than less for eight so-so games. I created this post for two reasons - first, to get advice from you and others who know so much more about all this AND second, to see if there were a place I didn't know about where I could get these games for less. Your email and the others who have taken the time to respond has helped me see the other side and I am now on that side (hello) in that I support your right to get paid for your efforts. Yes folks, the light bulb has turned on! For me, the problem remains cash flow. I need to figure out a way to pay new game prices which means I'll simply need to spread out my purchases. It seems that I will eventually grab every "new" title out there that is well reviewed as that is what I tend to do when I collect. So any advice on the next must-have game from your four would be really appreciated. I'll be making that purchase in the middle of October. As I get more and more involved in this whole Atari fling (as my wife calls it), I feel the issues of fellow enthusiasts. It is nice to belong. Please continue to do everything you can to get new 2600 games to the marketplace and I will do everything I can to buy them. Take care.

OK - this is freaky. I haven't really played Galazian since I posted my high score earlier in the week (23,410). So I'm working it today (while watching my beloved Eagles kick the ever-loving-stuffing out of the 49ers --> 42 to 3!!!) trying to improve it but the best I could do was 23,410 again (twilight zone music <on>). On a happier note, this is my first full week competing in this club and I have to tell you how much I enjoyed it. My only request for whoever is picking the game for next week would be to pick one where the player can go a little bit faster. I'm not talking Enduro or KaBoom, but something where I don't spend the week yelling "Faster, damn you!" at the Atari. Thanks

I need advice from those of you who have experience playing XYPE games. Last month, I purchased Gunfight (which I absolutely loved until my fingers went numb from firing the ole six shooter) and today, I just purchased "Thrust + Platinum" which I am very much looking forward to playing. I am now looking to the future and what other 2600 games I am going to pay around $20+. Looking at the other XYPE titles, there are five that interest me: Climber 5 Jammed Marble Craze Oystron Star Fire Do any of these stand out as absolute must-haves? I am also curious about other 2600 games that are "new" releases (in that they are more than $20 - ha, ha) - games like Crazy Balloon, Go Fish!, FallDown, etc., Finally, is there a reputable place to get games like this for less $$$$$?? (A wise used-car salesman once told me that you do not get if you do not ask - so don't be mad at me for asking!!!) Thanks

I realize the timing may be off, but the best video game ever made is Tetris. I'm pretty sure that atari was DOA by the time tetris came along, but tetris followed the Atari mantra of a game that is "incredibly easy to learn and incredibly difficult to master." -------------------------------------------- postscript - just read through most of the responses and realized this was covered about 187 times so far. My apologies. Given that, my next answer would be Super Terrific Happy Pong
