May not be wrong for you, but it's wrong for me. There were two main reasons why I liked 'classic' games in the early 1980s: 1. The good ones were fun. More fun than playing cards, board games, or Frisbee. 2. Even a bad game was new and exciting for at least a short time. Some classic games have great gameplay, but they are no longer new, so I mostly play them when I'm in a nostalgic mood. Most of the games do not interest me that much anymore, especially the Super Mario type games from the mid to late 1980s that made you replay levels if you didn't do things perfectly. I like new games with new worlds to explore and smarter characters and graphics that look closer to real life with each generation. The cartoony crap that most people are still in love with is OK for a while, but I get sick of the same old Japanese-looking junk. I can't wait for the day when many games will look so good that it will seem like you are watching and interacting with live video. Then after they perfect virtual reality suits and virtual reality rooms, it will feel like you are really there. You'll be able to see, smell, and feel all of the objects in the game world. Do things you would never try in real life, like climbing a bridge or building or mountain. Go swimming with sharks, ride on the wing of an airplane, or take a walk on the Moon or visit Mars and explore the pyramids and other interesting locations there. 968981 In that case, I would not call you a retro-gamer. I think a retro-gamer looks for enjoyment from the past. You seem more interested in the future with the occasional look backward for sentimental reasons. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It is a fine way to be and I know many, many people who agree with you. It just isn't what drives the retro-gamer. We are like treasure hunters, combing over unwanted beaches for a good place to dig (kind of like Pirates! Gold). I love the fact that I am rediscovering these (to me) lost classics. For example, I had never heard of Ristar (for the genny) and now it is my and my kids' favorite game. My daughter told me yesterday that she missed playing Atari 2600 and wanted to play less genny and more Atari. I get no thrill/satisfaction with the technilogical acheivments of todays' video games. They just do not do it for me, a retro-gamer.

I have spent the past three months accumulating Genesis titles! It has great games in all genres - action, adventure, some pretty cool racing games (okay, perhaps a weak point there - but then, I 'm not a big fan of the genre), outstanding puzzle and strategy games, the best sports games (some of them are all time greats), and very, very cool RPG's. My Genny collection has swelled to 287 titles. I research every titles before and after each purchase. And as I am going through them trying to decide what title I will play next, I realize that the collection of games here (along with the 200+ atari 2600 titles) will keep me busy for a lifetime. Other than complex 1st person shooters (tho' there is Zero Tolerance) and mobility (like the Game Genie), Genesis has it all. I cannot imagine having the need for any other game system. Retro-gamers, am I wrong? If so, why? What else is out there that I don't have but would need?

Most Difficult Genesis Game
silverpoodleman replied to silverpoodleman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Quackshot hard? Well, I haven't completed it yet and it does take some getting used to but I'm not sure I find it hard. Perhaps I haven't gotten far enough yet! One thing is for sure, my (now) nine-year old thinks Tom & Jerry is harder than Quackshot (if that means anything). I just got The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle ($0.99 folks - I couldn't pass it up), but I haven't heard anything about it - any comments? Is it the hardest game ever created or just another piece of crap thrown together with known characters to make a buck? -
ClassicPac, you know more about these systems and games than anyone I've known. Are you suggesting that the first step to cleaning a Genesis cart that doesn't work is to apply WD 40? Do you apply with a Q-tip? I have been using a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol - Am I really destroying my games? What I would love to see is a numbered list of steps to take when the Genny carts don't work - something like: 1) stare at cart menacingly - insert and power on 2) if that doesn't work, take out cart, yell at it and shake your fist - insert and power on 3) if that doesn't work, take out cart and apologize. Offer it money, love, riches and fame. Finish off by softly whispering "sweet nothings" in its exposed contacts - insert and power on 4) if that doesn't work, repeat step 2 5) if that doesn't work, submerge in water. Every minute, jerk it out of the water and scream insults at it ("You are IMPOTENT! Only your outside is hard!!"). Dunk again - jerk up ("See all these other games? They are laughing at you. They know how to perform and satisfy. What do you do? Nothing! NOTHING!!!. Dunk again - this time lift out of the water gently and say in a soothing tone, "Sweetheart, I want everything to work out between us. Don't you? You know I love you and I'd never do anything to hurt you. You know that, right? So, come on - I'm going to dry you off just the way you like, remember? Remember how it was in the beginning? How we spent all day and all night together. How all we thought about was each other and when I was away from you, we couldn't wait to see each other again. That's the way I want it to be from now on, okay?" 5) Gently reinsert cart while smoothly stroking the label. If it still doesn't work, yank the cart hard and yell "BITCH!!!! YOU STUPID, NO GOOD, IMPOTENT COW!!! I FART IN YOU GENERAL DIR_RECTION!! YOU STUPID !&^(#%^*&!!!!!!!!!!! - (pause long enough to take a soothing breath) - Congratulations sweeatheart, you just became a streethockey puck! 6) go to ebay and try to find another f*****king copy.

I'd skip the Crash series and go back to Ristar on Genesis. IMO, it is the only game to improve upon Sonic and nothing in the past ten years even comes close.

I guess it is time for the author of the original post to chime in regarding this extremely controversial question/topic/thread. Mr. Dones, why do you visit this forum? If one of the many answers I'm sure you have is to obtain information, guess what? That is what I was doing when posting this topic. Since I joined this elite group of retro gamers on this web page, I have made several good friends (hey there Classic Pac!) and numerous people who regularly respond to my topics no matter how stupid the question. As a result of their interest in helping a dedicated fellow retro gamer, I have learned an incredible amount of information about these games, their place history, their place in my life and why people like me keep embracing the past. I have also found out that most of the people apply first hand knowledge to their responses. They provide the texture, not just the cold, hard facts that one would get by simply going to google. The people here are experts and share the same passion I have. The information they give is generally right on, leads to smarter purchasing and better gaming. I can't get that on Google. So that is why I'd rather ask the question here rather than just googling it and also why I visit this site daily. To me, it sounds like you need to re-evaluate why you visit this forum. Clearly, you have anger issues or at the very least, no tolerance for people who do not do things the way you would. Clearly, you need to get your opinion heard no matter what - otherwise, you would have simply read the email, thought me an idiot for asking and not responded. However, since you responded as you did, this thread now contains issues unrelated to the original question. You, my friend, skewed the theme of this topic and screwed up a very simple question. Thanks so much for putting a speed bump on the information highway! Next time, if you do not have anything to say that would enhance the topic, move to another topic, or better yet, go Google yourself.

Most Difficult Genesis Game
silverpoodleman replied to silverpoodleman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
...And you give lessons on how to do this? ALSO, agree with those who said Contra Hard Corps - I think Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel has a better chance of beating CHC!!! -
I cannot imagine this game without the paddle. One of those 10-in-1 oversized Atari joystick plug-in games had a version of breakout with which you were supposed to use the oversized paddle. I think I played it about four times before uttering a single word under my breath ("Desecration!"). Soon after, I gave that joystick-abomination to a relative. Circus Atari with a joystick would lose the micro-inch movements that are so essential to failing miserably with this game.
-
From my standpoint, the purpose of this thread is to find the games that are good AND hard AND satisfying to beat. It is no fun beating an easy game or playing a game that is hard because the programming sucks.

I picked up a copy of Thrust as well and did pretty well during the high score competition. However, for me, it has to be the most frustrating of the 2600 games. I have given it many, MANY chances and still find it ridiculously awkward, trigger-fingerish and very crashable. I feel like a 'tard trying to hump a doorknob (sorry - forget the movie reference - though the Disney version is "you look like a monkey trying to hump a football" from Miracle).

I posted a similar thread in the 2600 forum, but I am interested in what classic gamers have to say about genesis games. I've been finishing off some pretty hard genny games lately - I just love that feeling of "breaking the tape" - don't you? It got me wondering what is the most difficult genesis game out there? What I am going for is the games that are difficult to acheive what the programmer set out to achieve, not, for example, a game that freezes your system up once you finish level seven due to a flaw in the program. I am also curious what game gave you the most satisfaction in completing? Is it the same game? For me, the answers are different - Most Difficult is Gunstar Heroes (this game gets harder everytime I play it - it isn't supposed to do that!) Most Satisfying was Comix Zone (there is no continue feature and you get killed mighty quickly)

are you sure you have a working controller? a controller that i have is broken and the buttons will press down but the signal would not go through to the genesis. if thats the problem i can send you a controller if you want, Hope that helps 964757 I hate to ask an obvious question, but are you sure you have the controller plugged into the correct spot? If so, you might want to take the cart out and clean it with a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol - it is possible that there is some oxidation on the metal connectors. Last, once the cart is dry and you reinsert it into the genny console, make sure you push down hard enough. Again, I hate to insult you bny reviewing video gaming 101, but any of those things could prevent you from getting into the game mode. Good luck

I would like to quickly add a character reference. I've had dealings with Classic_Pac before and have found him to be a truly honorable person. With our sales and then trades, I can attest to the fact that he is not in this for the money, but is a true retro game fanatic and enjoys sharing that hobby with others. I hope everything works out to your satisfaction. I 'd also like to point out that whatever happens with these paddles, you should definately keep searching until you find a pair with which you are pleased. If only for INDY 500, the paddles elevate a good game to one of the best two-player games for the 2600. They can also be used for THRUST (a very, very hard game but very rewarding) as well as an etch-a-sketch-type game.

Where are video game tournaments?
silverpoodleman replied to silverpoodleman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
No problem - I'd be coming up on my 3rd Bar Mitzvah by now -
I've read many people respond to the fact that there are tournaments that feature one game (often Madden '93 or Madden '94). Where would I find out about these? I'm involved in the 2600 high score club each week, but there is nothing like competing against an actual person - and kicking the !*/$%*#?! outta him/her. I play Atari 2600 and Sega Genesis.

Will GameBoy Carts play in GameGear?
silverpoodleman replied to silverpoodleman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
It is now known within my wifes family that I am a retro-gamer. One of my brother-in-laws has some old game boys and his step-son has Game Gear. My response was simply the same as the above - handhelds made by two different companies. Anyway, I told them that I'd ask anyway because, hey, you never know - -
Simple question - Will GameBoy Carts play in GameGear? Are they compatiple? Thanks
