  1. I noticed theres no code for South Africa or the middle east :P

No wonder things are so F*#Ked up over there, NO VCS. :D

    Nice theory. :)

Though... I have a 2600 pirate console with arabic letters on the box. ;)

Not all languages using the Arabic alphabet are Middle Eastern...Persian and Urdu come to mind.

  2. Is a flock of geese singular or plural?  "That flock" would seem to be

singular.  And "those geese" is definitely plural.  But the terms "that flock"

and "those geese" refer to the same thing.  (things?)  It really hurts ones brain.

I recommend not confusing language with the things it attempts to describe. :)

  3. So how would you feel if you told someone you needed a new 9V battery for your handheld and they said "battery is plural, you need a new cell"

I might feel that that person is ignorant: battery is most definitely a singular noun, and its plural is batteries.

Real world analogy: Sure, Volkswagen makes buses and sedans, but what do you think of when you hear the VW name?  BEETLE.  Same thing here.

No, it’s not the same, so long as those people aren’t under the impression that the Beetle is Volkswagen’s only automobile. The Beetle is the first product I think of when I hear “Volkswagen”, but if I were to hear something like “no Volkswagens were produced for the US market between 1979 and 1998” (or whatever the Beetle interim dates were), I would consider that claim dead wrong.

  4. Sloppy words, sloppy thoughts, sloppy deeds.

Recently, when a friend invited me over for Thanksgiving and suggested I bring my Atari, I wasn’t sure which one she meant! :?

Church, for a while the 2600 was the only Atari system (at least, the only programmable Atari system), but since that distinction ended more than two decades ago, I think a little more precision is in order.

  5. A 7800 Pac & Pal would have been nice. So far as I know, that game has never been converted to a home version. But yes, a more-or-less arcade-perfect original Pac-Man would also be a welcome addition to the 7800 library.

  6. StanJr, you silly spider. You could just remember that row 1 is 1·2·3, row 2 is 4·5·6, etc. But I doubt even that is necessary. Don’t you get a tingling sensation when you’re about to press the wrong key? :spidey:

  7. Is it a sin to love classic gaming but not like the 2600

It’s not so much a moral sin as it is a sin of stupidity.

Just kidding. :) As Ilovecircusatari points out, you may be in a VCS funk right now; considering how much time, money, and energy you have invested in acquiring your VCS collection, you may want to wait a while longer before taking any drastic steps. Perhaps you should keep the collection as is while observing a moratorium on new acquisitions (unless something fabulous just happens to jump out at you). You could even go ahead and reduce your collection to unique titles during this moratorium. But I caution against getting rid of the entire collection until you are quite sure that that is the thing to do.

Perhaps you haven’t played the right games, as MegaManFan suggests; perhaps you haven’t really spent time with your own collection. Maybe you need to sit down and try some games, read the manuals, chat with fellow AtariAgers, etc. and develop a deeper appreciation of the ol’ VCS. I did have one as a kid and enjoyed it, but a lot of the old games I enjoy now are ones I never played—in some cases, never even heard of—back in the day. Learning a little about the programming limitations, the corporate politics, the development histories, etc. has helped me appreciate the world of the 2600 all the more.

And who knows? Perhaps you’ll get to forge new memories along the way. Warlords is a neat game, but it’s neater now that I get to play it with an enthusiastic ten-year-old now and then.

  8. Frankly, I’m glad the pages are in Polish, even if I don’t know how to read them.  I think it’s exciting that there are Atari resources available for those who are most comfortable in Polish.

I agree with that, but many german sites have an option to choose between German and English, so why can't they have an option for another language too?

Maybe these authors want to stick to what they’re best at. I’ve seen many sites presented in two or more languages, and sometimes the translations leave much to be desired. As a native English speaker I can attest that sometimes I would rather read the original German, French, whatever because the English version is too unintelligible! And frankly, even though I can write in a few different languages, there’s only one that I write well.* So, I’m not going to take these Polish writers to task for not writing in English or some other language they’ve not chosen to use. If they end up making their site multilingual, great, and if they don’t, that’s fine too.

    * That’s English, in case you were wondering. :P

  9. For an easier (and lazier) way, just superglue 2 carts together, end label to end label and you have an instant double ender. I think someone sold on eBay Pac Man/Ms. Pac Man double ender this way.

Heh, that's a good idea, can't believe I never though of that. H*ll, I"m gonna try that right now. Any good combinations?

    Stargate & Defender II :D

  10. Hands down, the most faithful, flawless, accurate arcade translation, "can't tell the difference between the 2600 version and the arcade version" is...

Pong on the Video Olympics cartridge. Come on, you all know it's true.

Nah, arcade Pong wasn’t in color. :D
