They all spin and sound like the heads are moving

So right now I have 3 Atari 810 drives 2 have the door which pops opens and the other has the one described as a garage door. One of them with the pop open door works but does not sound ideal. It does load software though. The second and third give Boot Error messages. Question, what can i test? Could it be the belt / mechanism. One of the units came with a perfect 810 box so I am keen to get at least the top units with the pop open doors working. Can these be saved, improved?

I keep seeing mention of a Forth in use at Atari Corp. It was called Game Forth in the Byte Magazine Forth issue and now after seeing this site: Atari Programming Languages Then this : Strolling Forth Which Forth? Virtually all Forths available for the Atari are based on the FIG (Forth Interest Group) model for 6502 by William Ragsdale, so there is relatively good code compatibility. There are currently about a half-dozen Forths for the 400/800's. In approximate chronological order of appearance, they are: Coin-op Forth, a sort of inhouse version at Atari; Sunnyvale Forth, a public-domain version from a users group there (?); QS Forth, from Quality Software; PNS Forth from Pink Noise Studios; APX Forth, from Atari; Ataforth, (sorry, not sure whose); and Valforth, from Valpar International. We wrote and use Valforth, though the programs appearing in this column will generally run without much prodding on any of these systems. Was there a Forth in use and actually used for production software or were they just testing?

Action! with Effectus or C with cc65
JonnyBritish replied to rchennau's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
Carsten has a great site which has a lot of Action! code http://wiki.strotmann.de/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=ACTION while many on these forums are coding on emulators or even cross compiling on a pc i like to code directly on the real hardware. If your doing this then Action! would be great. Everyone is different so your own preference will be different to mine. the good thing about Atari is you have a huge choice Action! Basic Forth Pascal Assembler the list goes on Have fun! Oh and of course if you decide to play with ASM then you can do it within Action! to start with then move to 100 percent assembler if you decide its for you -
Why so many new-in-box 130XE in Venezuela?
JonnyBritish replied to wood_jl's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I am pleased to say that my initial concerns were unfounded, I have received all remaining software titles ( all in as described condition. My only caution is that US customs were all over these and appear to have opened 3 layers of packaging. At this point I have no concerns and can recommend seller chevyfrank75. Just be aware that while chevyfrank75 may ship a perfect sealed item in a perfect box it may not appear like that after customs has inspected. -
Magic. I remember seeing that commercial before. I do a pretty good Mike Strutter (probably meaningless to most people), and I was considering doing a Struttergear Infomercial about the product. Are we going to see a cartridge version for sale at any point?

JonnyBritish replied to wood_jl's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Be cautious I ordered a number of games described as new and sealed..the first one has turned up. It was not opened by customs and the box was not sealed and has what looks like cigarette marks in it. i have two more packages on the way both of whuch had 4 games each described as sealed. if they turn up as described i will forgive the first one..if not well i will post an image and the seller. fingers crossed... Just check tracking, all items have arrived at US customs..hoping i will get 6 sealed items as described -

Being from the UK we always assumed Scott Adams and Adventure Internatoinal only did...well adventure games. This evening I purchased a large amount of Atari equipment in excellent condition and in the software part was a folder with a software tool from AI called Diskey - Disk editor for the Atari Perhaps when you launch the software it says... Welcome to Diskey from Adventure International You awake to find yourself in a fragemented state. As a sector n a floppy disk you find yourself not connected to your other sector friends exits are 1 - Run Defrag 2 - Delete yourself 3 - etc...

Not the official manual, but there is a book on Atari LOGO in this torrent. It's the one listed as "Computer Art and Animation". The full title is "Computer Art and Animation - A User's Guide to Atari LOGO". For games and other manuals, Atariage member Remow has a good collection posted on Scribd. i have both the logo manuals and a few others i intend to send over to the guy who scanned the last lot. I bought a atari book of ebay to add to the list - vreating strategy games on the ataro

I believe that the game Nukewar was originally a mainframe game. I also think that the Civilisation series of games originally came from a mainframe game. Does anyone have any good web pages talking about old mainframe games with perhaps links to source etc? It would be interesting to get the mainframe source for nukewar then compare to the Avalon Hill Atari version for example.

Atari 820 Printer / dishwasher..
JonnyBritish replied to JonnyBritish's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Well tonight after a long break i hooked up the 820 and loaded the factory supplied paper and ribbon. Loaded a basic program into BASIC XE and did a LIST "P:',10,100. Lo and behold the 820 printed with no issue and the ribbon is fine!!! The manual is copyright 1979 so assuming the printer is around 30 years old. Only funny is that it prints out a number of lines then pauses and takes a break to cool down I guess. Yes I know I could print via APE etc but much more fun when you can see some genuine vintage Atari hardware in action -
Any plans to release the Atari 8-bit computer one? And agree the artwork is great!

We need a new all in one atari book
JonnyBritish replied to carmel_andrews's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers

Earlier this year I acquired the entire archive of the Milwaukee Atari user group which is about 1600 floppies. I have to imagine the program is on these disks somewhere. I'll add it to my list to search. My aim is to get all these disks converted to ATR's and stored to one DVD which can be offered to the community complete with disk file lists so its all searchable etc A dream maybe but 1600 disks is a huge goldmine of lost files and utils etc
