  1. I keep seeing mention of a Forth in use at Atari Corp. It was called Game Forth in the Byte Magazine Forth issue and now after seeing this site:

    Atari Programming Languages

    Then this : Strolling Forth

Which Forth? Virtually all Forths available for the Atari are based on the FIG (Forth Interest Group) model for 6502 by William Ragsdale, so there is relatively good code compatibility. There are currently about a half-dozen Forths for the 400/800's. In approximate chronological order of appearance, they are: Coin-op Forth, a sort of inhouse version at Atari; Sunnyvale Forth, a public-domain version from a users group there (?); QS Forth, from Quality Software; PNS Forth from Pink Noise Studios; APX Forth, from Atari; Ataforth, (sorry, not sure whose); and Valforth, from Valpar International. We wrote and use Valforth, though the programs appearing in this column will generally run without much prodding on any of these systems.

Was there a Forth in use and actually used for production software or were they just testing?

  2. Carsten has a great site which has a lot of Action! code

    http://wiki.strotmann.de/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=ACTION

while many on these forums are coding on emulators or even cross compiling on a pc i like to code directly on the real hardware. If your doing this then Action! would be great.

Everyone is different so your own preference will be different to mine. the good thing about Atari is you have a huge choice

    Action!

    Basic

    Forth

    Pascal

    Assembler

    the list goes on

    Have fun!

Oh and of course if you decide to play with ASM then you can do it within Action! to start with then move to 100 percent assembler if you decide its for you

  3. Status?

I am pleased to say that my initial concerns were unfounded, I have received all remaining software titles (8) all in as described condition. My only caution is that US customs were all over these and appear to have opened 3 layers of packaging. At this point I have no concerns and can recommend seller chevyfrank75. Just be aware that while chevyfrank75 may ship a perfect sealed item in a perfect box it may not appear like that after customs has inspected.

  4. Great, now all you need to do is get Alan Alda and that little girl to do a commercial for you! icon_wink.gif But then again, the little girl is pretty much a woman now, so just get another one.

Magic. I remember seeing that commercial before.

I do a pretty good Mike Strutter (probably meaningless to most people), and I was considering doing a Struttergear Infomercial about the product. :)

Are we going to see a cartridge version for sale at any point?

  5. Just wondering if these were in a cave for 25 years, or what?

This guy has been at it for much of the year, has sold many, and is still not out. Prices seem to have come down a little as the [limited] market may have partially saturated; most people would rather put a spare C-note towards a blasted cell phone or ipod (not me, btw) rather than something like our beloved A8s.

    Be cautious

I ordered a number of games described as new and sealed..the first one has turned up. It was not opened by customs and the box was not sealed and has what looks like cigarette marks in it. i have two more packages on the way both of whuch had 4 games each described as sealed. if they turn up as described i will forgive the first one..if not well i will post an image and the seller.

    fingers crossed...

Just check tracking, all items have arrived at US customs..hoping i will get 6 sealed items as described

  7. Being from the UK we always assumed Scott Adams and Adventure Internatoinal only did...well adventure games. This evening I purchased a large amount of Atari equipment in excellent condition and in the software part was a folder with a software tool from AI called Diskey - Disk editor for the Atari

Perhaps when you launch the software it says...

Welcome to Diskey from Adventure International

You awake to find yourself in a fragemented state.

As a sector n a floppy disk you find yourself not connected to your other sector friends

    exits are

    1 - Run Defrag

    2 - Delete yourself

    3 - etc...

    :D

  8. I am looking for any manuals for software and games that are in .pdf format.

Right now I am looking for a pdf scanned manual of the language "Atari Logo" language.

You know the one with the turtles and such. Does anyone have that?

Not the official manual, but there is a book on Atari LOGO in this torrent. It's the one listed as "Computer Art and Animation". The full title is "Computer Art and Animation - A User's Guide to Atari LOGO".

For games and other manuals, Atariage member Remow has a good collection posted on Scribd.

i have both the logo manuals and a few others i intend to send over to the guy who scanned the last lot. I bought a atari book of ebay to add to the list - vreating strategy games on the ataro

  9. I wish Retro Gamer was in the stores around here

Here in chicago fry's electronics is now stocking Retro Gamer and Games magazine both from the UK.

    Also..

If you check online for the retro gamer magazine shop which is www.imagineshop.co.uk you can buy two dvd sets which have many issues of retro gamer.

  10. A. Talked to the guys in the warehouse John. Here are the generic printer ribbons that fit the Atari 820 Printer.

    DTC / Data Terminal LRC / Micros / MKD Unitote Regital 400 & 430, Unitote/Regitel ECR

Well tonight after a long break i hooked up the 820 and loaded the factory supplied paper and ribbon. Loaded a basic program into BASIC XE and did a LIST "P:',10,100.

Lo and behold the 820 printed with no issue and the ribbon is fine!!!

The manual is copyright 1979 so assuming the printer is around 30 years old.

Only funny is that it prints out a number of lines then pauses and takes a break to cool down I guess.

Yes I know I could print via APE etc but much more fun when you can see some genuine vintage Atari hardware in action :)

  11. I used to have a program called the Wargames Dialer. It was essentially a phreaking autodialer for the Atari 800/XL/XE computers.

It was a gray background/white text program and could be set-up to autodial numbers, then you could program pauses and then transmit numbers, wait for a connect to a BBS.

This was used back in the day when you used Sprint and MCI long distance dialing codes to make long distance calls for reduced costs vs. paying super high cost AT&T long distance calls.

So you'd use the Wargames dialer, dial into the Sprint or MCI long distance connection 800#, then enter a sequentially generated Spring/MCI long distance code, then dial the telco# of a BBS number - if the number was busy it would hang up and try again, if the code was invalid it would generate a new LD dialing code and try again, if successful, it would be printed out onto your printer.

You'd run this all through the night and the next morning you'd have 3-5 brand spanking new long distance codes...

For you newbies, weenied on the internet, or using long ISP dial-ups... well back during the BBS days (you know what a BBS is, right?) were local in each state, so to call them you had to incur HUGE long distance charges, so getting long distance dialing codes was like getting someone's VISA/MC #... they were worth their weight in gold, you could use them to dial to out of state BBS' but you could also use them as trading fodder to get secret access on BBS' to their secret pirated software directories.

Now in this day in age, the program is useless, but it was a very big part of my early days of modem'ing and BBS'ing and I'd like to find a copy of it.

    Curt

Earlier this year I acquired the entire archive of the Milwaukee Atari user group which is about 1600 floppies. I have to imagine the program is on these disks somewhere. I'll add it to my list to search. My aim is to get all these disks converted to ATR's and stored to one DVD which can be offered to the community complete with disk file lists so its all searchable etc

A dream maybe but 1600 disks is a huge goldmine of lost files and utils etc

  12. Mine is here too! Nice presentation as usual from GR8. Love the small form factor and two great games on one cart. Thanks again.

    +1

My two copies arrived on saturday. Great games and really nice packaging. Now looking forward to seeing an announcement about His Dark Majesty on cart :-)

    great stuff GR8!!

  13. In talking to Carsten (cas) about the Forth programming language on the Atari he mentioned something called the WikiReader. This is a 99 dollar device that has an offline copy of 3 million+ wiki articles from wikipedia.org. The unit has 3 buttons and a touch screen that lets you search for articles etc. The unit runs a RISC processor from Epson that can run the device on two AAA batteries for a year assuming about 15 minutes usage a day. So far so well so what..ok heres the fun bit

1 - Perhaps in a nod to Curt and the Atari flashback 2 and the ability to add in a cartridge port, this unit has a sticker in the battery compartment. Pull that off and it reveals 8 pads you can attach to to get serial communications going. You can use this as a debug port.

2 - Now the real point of the post. Apparently to aid in development of the unit, the developer implemented an also ANSI standard FORTH on the device. These Forth programs are stored as text files on the supplied MiniSD card and yes you can add your own. If you hold one of the buttons on startup the unit will show a list of included Forth progrms and you can of course download them, review the source and make your own. In addition the Forth system will respond on the serial port. Apparently they used Forth to test as the unit was being built so there are words to access many aspects of the electronics. In addition there are many examples showing how to interact with the screen and buttons.

It also looks like you could code assembler on the device using the CODE word. Anyway I thought it was fun and a great little hackable gizmo. Oh and the first thing I did was search for Atari on the device..hoping this brings it back on topic :-)

For more information check it out here

and for someone who is hacking around with it check it out here

More on hacking the device here

    And the source code here

Lastly, the manual for the RISC processor

Anyway I thought the people reading the posts on Forth on Atari might find this interesting.

  14. BBS Express is on the Holmes CD2...

I attached the files to a post I did in another thread but BBS Express and BBS Express Pro! are not comparable.

Was it possible to add to BBS Express ie the none Pro version with Action! code or is this limited to the pro version?
