  1. Hi,

just to let you all know:

I finished work on the MK-binary at the weekend. The PAL/NTSC-Switching works perfect now and the PAL-colors were choosen as good as possible (there is no real yellow on a PAL-2600 sadly).

One bug appeared last week when the binary was played on a 2600-Junior using the Supercharger, as a result the energybars at the bottom of the playfield were modified a bit.

I included new coding which shows the limited ROM-# in the Intro (#00 to #99). Due to that routine there is nearly no space left in the file (around 30 Bytes are unused).

The game should work on every console now, but 7800 wasn't tested yet, because the Supercharger doesn't work on that device.

At the moment the game is tested by two friends adn afterwards a single testing-cartridge will be assembled. When the cart is ready there will be a last testing run checking if the cart runs perfectly on every 2600 and 7800.

We are working on the manual design right now and I'm still looking for a professional printshop to do all print-work.

    Best regards!

    Simon

  2. I wanted to create the PAL/NTSC-Switch as gently as possible. You are now able to change the TV-mode at every time during the whole intro, fight-sequence and game...

It was (and still is) much more work to check always which setting the switch has, but I like this comfortable solution much more than compiling one PAL- and one NTSC-binary.

Let's see how many of the 4.096 Bytes will be still unused when the game is ready. I currently expect less than 100 Bytes to be unused...

    Best regards,

    Simon

  3. Hi, everybody!

The decision was made and I'm quite happy with the final picture. At the moment Jason and me are working on the manual and the package.

At the moment I still need to implement the PAL-mode for the game-screen, all the rest works pretty fine. My hard-drive refused booting up yesterday and my last MK-backup was made on christmas, but I finally managed to get the PC booting again and no important data was gone... phew!

BTW: I'm not going to earn a buck or two on MK, I will just try to get my costs back. MK is made for the 2600-scene and not for my porte-monnaie...

    Best regards,

    Simon

  4. What the heck is going on here?? I've been away for four days right now, my original post was deleted and there's so much rage about my decision...

I didn't read all those posts and I didn't check my mailbox yet (and I don't feel like doing it within 2001 after I got this impression of what kind of mails may be in there).

I didn't know that the face on Jason Parlee's label was taken from a movie poster and I don't want any problems in releasing that cart because of using ripped art. I only wanted to get a nice little label for a homebrew-cart. The scene shown on Jason's label fits the most to my vision of the perfect label for my game, but I thought of the label to be totally self-created, just like my game was. HOMEBREW, dudes!

My second choice would've been "Mike Tinnes - Submission #1". Anyone complaining about that thing aswell?

I'm totally disappointed about the result of this discussion right now and consider to cancel the whole label-project. I will take some time thinking about all those facts and will be back in the beginning of 2002. Fact is that I NEVER wanted to start a discussion about the winning piece, because it's MY game and I spent so damn much time on it. Best thing would be creating a label by myself as I originally planned it...

Information for the pals which do care about *THE GAME* and not only the art on the label: the tests using the SuperCharger on a real machine worked fine. Some minor things (PAL-colors, PAL-position on the screen (why does z26 shows different vertical positions in NTSC/PAL while the original machine doesn't?)) are to be adjusted, but the game itself works...

    Merry X-mas...

  5. Hi and thanks for your answer. I'm playing with colors in an emulator since months and I wanted to get suggestions on which colors to use as c64-blue, because there are many possible codes for blue and none of them fits totally.

The PAL and NTSC-colors are totally different. At the moment I use something in the $8x range as NTSC-blue and something like $Dx as PAL-blue. I don't have the exact value in my head right now...

Any *suggestions* for the "perfect" code?

    Simon

  6. Matthias: I wouldn't dial your number, because I wouldn't get an objective answer due to your entry in the contest, would I?

I'm close to a decision I think. I really liked the "prototype-idea", but due to the fact that I want to ship a complete pack consisting of cart, box, instructions and bandanas I won't choose that design as I can't imagine any design for the box and instructions which fis to that prototype-label.

My first thought of the prototype-label was "That's it! That's the winner!", but my second thought about the box-design changed my mind. I hope you can understand that, Philip R. Frey. The next time I develop a 2600 game (and that'll be quite soon), I want you to design a prototype-label for that game as I will provide it as cartridge only. OK?

    Simon

  7. Well now it's up to me, huh?

The last update brought up some nice designs again. The idea of that prototype-label was great (Philip R. Frey - #1)...I really love it - it's as simple as ingenious.

I will need some time to compare all those *GREAT* labels and make a final decision afterwards.

Please let me know which labels you like most. I doubt that this will make my decision easier, but... it's like using my audience-joker in "Who becomes a millionaire".

    Simon

  8. The deadline's getting closer and closer and we are near the record of labels set by the Gunfight-Contest.

I'm looking forward to the final update and keep being curious about what may come...

A big *THANK YOU* once again to Albert who made this contest possible and spends so much time on updating these sites...

    Simon

  9. Thanks for your answers so far, mates!

Which colors would you suggest for the two C64-blue-colors in the intro? What do you think which colors are (in both PAL- and NTSC-charts) as close to the real C64-Screen as possible? Testing every possible color is really boring...

    Thanks!

    Simon

  10. Wow! Another fine update and still some more days until the deadline for the contest.

At the moment I'm thinking about driving to the biggest european computer party once again and presenting Mental Kombat in the WiLD-Competition. I visit the party since years and it's always fun seing some thousands of people computing there. Visit http://www.theparty.dk for more information. BTW: Last year I won place #2 in the C64-Graphics and #5 in the WiLD-Competition.

  11. Manuel: the chart is exactly the one I'm refering to at the moment. I fetched it while scanning the [stella]-Archives once. (No, I'm not a subscriber yet...)

I didn't understand your joke "... Eckhard being almost color-blind", because the person who posted the colorchart was someone named Glenn Saunders, wasn't it?

Thomas: good to hear that only yellow is missing totally. Why the heck did I use it so much in my game so far? Grrrrr...

    Simon

  12. Hi Manuel,

I'll keep the usage of the difficulty-switches as they're right now. I recommend people fetching a real 2600 in case they want to play the Mental Kombat cart and don't have a 2600 right now...

Are there other colors besides yellow which can't be found on the TIA-PAl-chart?

Thanks for your suggestions so far, Simon

Huh...someone's trying to influence me on choosing the winning-label of the Mental Kombat Label Contest...

I actually don't know the guy on the label and therefore I may not share your opinion about the label.

  14. Hi Manuel and Thomas,

funny that only german answered my question, but we're discussing in english and entertaining all the others.

I know that only the original 2600 has got the BW/Color-Switch. My problem is that both difficulty-switches are already used for game-options, as described on: http://www.quernhorst.de/atari/

Therefore I will definately use the BW/Color-Switch...

I wrote down a list of the NTSC-color-values used in Mental Kombat and will translate them at the weekend into PAL-colors (as far as it's possible). Too sad that red and yellow are the most important colors in my game...

Thomas: "newer hardware like the 7600"? I guess you meant the 7800...as I don't care if MK would run on any prototype-machine out there...

  15. I'm currently developing "Mental Kombat" and have the following problem:

I finally decided to use the BW/Color-Switch for changing between PAL and NTSC in the game. I already adjusted the screen-positions, but have to add the different colors. Another possibility would have been producing two different carts for PAL and NTSC, but I prefer the Switch-solution.

In comparing the color tables of the TIA between PAL and NTSC I didn't find a yellow on the PAL palette. Is my color-chart wrong or what code do you use for yellow in PAL?

    Thanks in advance,

    Simon

  16. Thanks once again for the new entries, once again another great update! Let's see what the final amount of entries will be? Maybe we could even beat the amount of 38 labels from the Gunfight-contest...

Al, please change the title of Efren Ramirez' third label from #2 to #3, just a little cut-and-paste bug in the numbers...

  17. The entries so far are unbelievable great! It seems to be already impossible to choose the ultimate winner of them all.

I first thought today of shipping the 100 cartridges with each 20 of the best 5 different labels (20 * 5 = 100 that would've meant) to get the best 5 entries honoured. But I came to the decision that there can only be one winning-label, because the instructions and the box should fit to the label design and I won't have 5 designs there aswell.

Waiting for more entries to make the decision even harder... ;-)

  18. Hi and thanks for the support so far to all of you, especially to Albert who made this contest possible!

The entries until now are really *GREAT* and I look forward to the end of the competition. Please note that the 100 cartridges will be numbered #00 to #99 to save one more byte... ;-)

At the moment my favorite label is xxxxxxxxx...nah! I won't tell right now. :-)

Best regards and thanks so far,

    Simon

  19. Wow! The first three entries are great! I really liked that idea with the brains in the bottles. :-)

My worst nightmare seems to come true: choosing the winner out of all the amazing entries... ;-)

BTW: Is someone able to supply me with a Supercharger or something else to test the binary on a real machine? I want to see it myself on the real 2600 when the game works perfect in z26. I'm told that some bugs may only appear on the original machine. Please contact me via eMail. Thanks!
