  1. I know this is an old thread but if the 850 still does not work, try DeoxIT D5. I had an 800 that only part of the SIO would work. I took out the Pokey and PIA a couple times and it did not help. Bought some DeoxIT d5. Before I removed the chips, I put DeoxIT on the pins of the ICs. Removed them, put more on the legs. Inserted chips. It all works. My 800 was very clean when I got it. No rust type corrosion on the pins, but they were not shiney either. I used standard Q-tips. Not the correct tool, but is what I had. I was very careful about leaving "hairs" from the Q-tips. I believe they make foam ones that would be proper to use. In a few moments, I am going to try a untested 850 I just got. I do not have devices to plug into it. This thread will help me a lot. Thinking of buying a Star NX-1000II printer but not sure if I should spend the money or use Fujinet or SIO2PC/USB to print through and Windows 10 Computer.
  2. Mazzspeed, Thanks. I was going to use the ethernet cable since I have a spool of it and it has multible wires. I was nor sure how many wires a USB cable has in it. Thanks for the caution!
  3. Thanks, I will wire it up soon. Any guidance on using twisted pairs from a ethernet cable?
  4. This is what I think the SIO pin out is.
  5. Could you please help me wire this to connect an Atari 800 to an IBM PC (USB) with windows 10. I have read and read but am fearful of an incorrect connection and frying things. I think I need to move the jumper to 5V ? Would Cat 5 cable be OK? which wires should be in which twisted pair? I might try for a cable between 10-15 feet. I have read that using a 6 wire is better than a 4 wire device? Which and what wires gets connected to the Atari SIO? I Have a Atari 800 computer, 1050 disk drive, SDrive-Max, (and 850 untested on the way). I am going to 3d print a SIO connector from a file on Thingiverse. I have some appropriate (I think) terminal crimp connectors from Digikey. This 800 thing may be getting out of hand but it sure is enjoyable! I am hoping the RespeQT will enable me to print BASIC programs through the PC (and not need the 850). Thank you. About this item FTDI FT232RL IC:Built-in original FTDI FT232RL IC. 6. Thanks everyone for helping me fix it. Not only did you help getting it working, you all kept me from making it worse.
  7. Something worked. I applied DeoxIT on the Pokey, PIA and SIO. I had cleaned the SIO prior with Corrosion Block. Put some DeoxIT on the Pokey and PIA, Removed them, put DeoxIT on the sockets and chip legs, re-inserted. Also, blew it out with an air blower, but it looked very clean. Hooked up the 1050 with a blank disk. Got a boot error. Put in a DOS 2.5 disk. Got a boot error. That is OK because I do not know if the 1050 works. Hooked up my SDrive-Max and it works! What was wrong. I don't know. The chips and sockets looked good. I don't have that much experience but maybe the were oxidized a little. The legs were not really corroded rusty like, but maybe dull, oxidized like. I am now really good at taking apart an Atari 800. Now on to M.U.L.E. and fixing the 1050.

  9. Before I tried this I thought I would ask for opinions. My Atari 800 SIO is not working. I have ordered a new Pokey and PIA chip. They are in the process of coming. In the mean time, I was thinking of using DeoxIT D5 on at least the Pokey and PIA. Put a little on the legs to lubricate and make removal easier. Clean the legs with a tooth brush, apply DeoxIT to legs and socket and re-insect chip. The 800 does not see the 1050 drive or the SDrive-Max. Thanks
  10. Yes, there is +5 volts pin 10 and +12 on pin 12. I ordered a PIA from eBay. Thinking of pulling the Pokey and PIA again and use DeoxIT d5 on them and their sockets.
  11. I checked the 1050 and it is selected to drive 1. I moved the switches back and forth a number of times but did not use contact cleaner yet. I have M.U.L.E. on cartridge. Thanks
  12. 1050, That's very interesting. Could you help clarify the proper chip for me? CO12298 / CO14795 PIA 6520 from Best Electronics MOTOROLA MC68B21P DIP-40 USA ship on Ebay Are they interchangeably? Ebay has them mostly with a P on the end. Thanks
  13. Thanks. The good news is that it plays M.U.L.E. That was the original reason for the 800. Just a case of mission creep. Also, I ordered a can of Deoxit. So many different contact cleaners available.
  14. Thanks! It was not guaranteed to work by the seller. He was the original owner and it did everything he asked of it. Casette but not disk. He has been very nice. In BASIC, I did a LOAD"D:program.bas" Got an error 130 (Device not found) If I do DOS, it goes to memo pad since there is no DOS loaded. I called Best Electronics. Very nice folks. Ordered a populated motherboard, power supply board, and a SIO cable. Can't wait until it come in the mail. If I get a SIO2PC-USB, it shouldn't be any different for the SDrive-Max that it cannot find. Some blank disks came in the mail. The drive seems to be OK. The DOS disk has been delayed in the mail.
  15. TGB1718, Thanks. That is the information I was looking for. Yes, I had the peripherals powered on before the computer. I did the SDrive and 1050 separately. Just booted to memo pad. So It appears the disk part of the SIO is not working. Possible problems? Pokey, PIA? Since the SIO port is on the power board, could it be a problem? Thanks
