1. The name of this topic has been changed to "Excluding Pac-Man and ET, which is the worst game?" from "Besides Pac-Man and ET" to avoid confusion. Same topic, new name! P.S. Thanks to Random Terrain for the suggestion.
2. Does anyone have the original 1984 or early 1986 models of the 7800? These are the ones with the expansion ports on them for add-ons. Reply if you please.
3. Another good kids game would be Snoopy and the Red Baron. What better than to play a game featuring your favorite Peanuts character?
4. Good point there. That's the main reason why Crane and co. left Atari. But a man named Warren Robbinett changed all that with the first easter egg in a little cart we know as Adventure...
5. Oh yeah, Parker Bros. produced some quality games, too! Frogger, anyone?
6. Pitfall!, River Raid, Stampede, Starmaster, Laser Blast, Pressure Cooker, need I go on? What do these games have in common? One word: Activision. Founded by four disgruntled former Atari programmers including David Crane (the genius behind Pitfall!) and Bob Whitehead to name a couple, Activision pushed the boundaries of gaming and made games that many thought the 2600 wasn't capable of. Colorful, advanced graphics, realistic sounds, and, best of all, all the games were almost flicker-free. In fact, many Activision games were supperior to what other companies were doing, including Atari themselves. With that, share your thoughts on the company that is Activision P.S. They are still in business (probably one of the few third-party gamers to survive after the 1983 crash).
7. Currently I have a six-switch (light), a four-switch woody (I currently play on this one), and (if it counts) a Flashback 2. In the past I also had 2 Vaders (one I recently got rid of), many four switch woody's (about 6 of them), and a junior model (long rainbow), which I gave to my brother. I am currently hunting down a heavy sixer. Does anyone have one for sale?
8. Warlords is definately a classic! I've played this game with my brother and whipped him everytime. I was hoping someone would mention it.
9. I haven't seen the Flashback 2.0 yet. I looked for it at Best Buy the other day and all they had was about 200 FB1s. 919509 You can get them at Walmart. They got them in stock now.
10. Yo Curt, You and Atari scored with the Flashback 2! Is there any plans on doing a Flashback 3 with the 5200? HP
11. I played Quadrun on my Flashback 2 as well and I was wondering what happened with the voice. Also did you know that Atari founder Nolan Bushnell created Secret Quest?
12. Coaxial is a cable type, not a switchbox type. I prefer the 4-port with it's auto-switchbox, though. It's AUTO! 926415 I stand corrected. I corrected my statement.
13. Many people complain about the non-centering joystick on the 5200 controllers. My problem is not that. It's actually the start buttons on the controllers that are supposed to start a game. They can wear out easily. When I bought my 5200 I had six 5200 analog controllers (Two I had previously bought before I even had the system and four when I bought the system) and out of all six of them, only one had the start button working.
14. I have a 2-port 5200. I like this one a little better than the 4-port because if the switchbox is broken, I can get a new one at Radio Shack real easily. However on the 4-port, if the propriety switchbox is broken, since the power supply plugs into the switchbox and not the console (as on the 2-port), if you can't find a video game store that sells them used or new old stock, you're screwed! My only complaint about the 2-port is that it's not compatible with Pitfall! or Mountain King.
15. I LOVE the Flashback 2 way better than the first Flashback because it's a real working Atari 2600 VCS. I also had the first Flashback (I got it for Christmas last year from my father) but the games were redone, like on the Jakks Pacific TV Games but much worse. At least the Jakks TV Games tried to match the originals, but Atari totally redid every game on the first Flashback that they look totally different. For example, play Solaris on an actual 2600 and then play it on the Flashback 1. The original cart performs flawlessly, while on the Flashback 1 the action was extremely choppy. Another example is Breakout. In the original cart (and the Jakks TV Games for that matter) the ball is served to your pong-like paddle. On the Flashback 1, the ball shoot from the paddle like it had been all ready hit! Now I like the Flashback 2 because the games were not re-created. They are from the original cartridge sources, mainly because, as stated previously, it's an actual working 2600 VCS. It has 40 games built in, as opposed to Flashback 1's 20 games. Plus the Flashback 2 has brand-new games and unreleased prototypes, including Combat 2, Frog Pond, and Saboteur (that last one also appeared on the first Flashback). And it has actual working 2600 joysticks that you can use on your old Atari systems as well as the Flashback 2. Plus, you can also modify it to actually play your old carts, as stated by Atari Historical Society's Curt Vendel, who helped Atari design both Flashback consoles. If you want one, pick it up at either Walmart, Atari's website, or here at AtariAge (though in limited quantities).
16. It is obvious that this topic has touched a nerve with people, particularly in the title of this topic (especially where ET is concerned). I want everyone viewing this topic to know that I am a fan of both Pac-Man and ET and I am not a hypocrite. The reason I titled this topic "Besides Pac-Man and ET, which is the worst game?" goes back to when these two games first came out. Atari had aquired the rights to make a VCS version of Pac-Man, probably the biggest anticipated game from Atari. When it came out, people were disappointed about it not resembling the arcade version at all. I really doesn't look like the arcade version, but I agree that it's still a good game. I actually rate it high on my "What-to-play" list. But some folks back in 1982 and even today don't agree. And then there's ET. When Universal gave Atari the rights to do a video game based off their big hit "ET The Extra Terrestrial" the brass at Atari gave programmer Howard Scott Warshaw only a few weeks to develop it in time for Christmas. When ET finally came out that Xmas season, people were ticked off at Atari because they thoght ET was the worst game they ever made, far worse than even Pac-Man. Their biggest complaint was about the numberous pits that ET falls into. In fact, that's what led Atari to bury the unsold ET carts (along with a few unsold Pac-Man carts) in a cement-filled landfill in New Mexico. Which brings me to this topic. I created the title (whether you want to believe it or not, it's up to you) in defense of both these games. I wanted people to share what they thought was the worse game ever made for the 2600, with the exception of those two, because I thought they weren't that bad and worthy of being played. Some of you (like moycon-YES I'M TALKING TO YOU!!!) might harbor a grudge against this topic because of the title. But if I offended anybody with this title, I am a Pac-Man/ET fan, too!
17. So you admit to following the crowd like a drone so you fit in. STAND UP PROUD AND DEFEND THE HONOR OF E.T. INSTEAD OF DUMPING ON HIM!!! 925313 HEY, GENIOUS!!! I WASN'T "DUMPING" ON ET, OK?? Read the back story on the sales of Pac-Man and ET and you'll see why I titled this forum. I'm tired of having to explain myself!!!
18. I had previously stated that I personally liked ET, but there was others that didn't think the same.
19. In my personel opinion, they are all good in their own way
20. Airlock by DataAge is another loser I forgot to mention. You always die on that game because there's no way to get to the top!
21. I would like to find a Quadrun cart (even though I got it on the Flashback 2), the Swordquest: Waterworld cart, and the Q* Bert Qubes cart.
22. Pacman and ET are far from the worst games,if my memory serves me correctly ET was quite hard to get hold of here in UK back then.-jammajup 924449 Personally, I DO like both Pac-Man and ET, but I also know that there are many 2600 fans who don't feel the same way. That's why I asked what people thought were the worst games, besides those two.
23. I'd like to know what 2600 game you think is the worst game ever made, besides Pac-Man and ET. Personally, I can't stand Mogul Manic, the Amiga skiing game because it's extremely slow-paced. Another turkey is Sea Hunt from possibly the worst video game company ever, Froggo. Sea Hunt is impossible to play without dying. Then there's a bad game that has been cosidered good: CBS's Mountain King. I cannot play this game to save my life!!! There are some games I didn't mention, so now I'd like to know what you all think is the worst video game or games ever created for the Atari 2600.
