A failed attempt to get "classic gaming" or "retrogaming" added to the dictionary: Fort Apocalypse wrote: > >I doubt that anyone has checked for this term, since it is composed > >of two words already commonly used, but the term "classic gaming" > >(a.k.a. Here at Merriam-Webster, we have a series of criteria that a word has to meet to be considered for entry in our dictionary. We spend a certain amount of time every day scouring all sorts of published material for examples of new words, and when we find them, they go into our citation database. When we revise our dictionary, we check the database to see if any of these new words have enough support to warrant their entry. Thus far, we have no examples of "retrogaming" in our database, which means that it probably won't go in any time soon. A further search of an online news archive turned up only a scant handful of hits for "retrogaming," a couple of dozen compared to the thousands that we usually look for when entering a new word. For more information on the process and criteria we use to enter words in the dictionary, please visit our Web site at http://www.merriam-webster.com/help/faq/words_in.htm. I looked into this recently and although you probably already figured this out, sdlmess is the latest up-to-date version, and the other one is out-of-date. See this about 64-bit http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4352077

Are there any good histories of the fights between classic (or just plain old) computer and console companies/their users (PR wars, skirmishes, bad feelings, alliances, etc. - the whole she-bang)? I know there have to be references in a lot of books/magazines/etc., but just curious if anyone ever pooled that knowledge together into a single comprehensive history?

Apple II on a chip? If not how about this
Fort Apocalypse replied to Fort Apocalypse's topic in Hardware
Does anyone know if anyone is working on or had designed an Apple II (or I, II+, IIe, IIc, IIgs, III) on a chip? How about does anyone know if anyone is still making any of these MBs? How about any major sellers of them? I hear that some are throwing them away or smashing them for the metal in droves instead of selling them, which seems like a mistake. -

Fort Apocalypse replied to Fort Apocalypse's topic in Hardware
Actually I had IIe, which I'd be fine with, but I guess a gs on a chip would be cool too. -
http://www.applefritter.com/node/22873 old news, but was news to me. since the $12 computer won't be an Apple II, guess I have to look elsewhere for fun.

Online Emulators for Classic Consoles and Old Computers
Fort Apocalypse replied to Fort Apocalypse's topic in Emulation
Let me know if anyone finds any more. A good search to find them is http://www.google.com/search?q=applet+emulator (or better yet do that in a language other than english) It would be nice to have pinned lists of emulators topics in this forum -
There is also DSStella for the Nintendo DS. I haven't tried it though. And there are portable Linux based devices like Gp2x. See the Dedicated Systems forum.

Online Emulators for Classic Consoles and Old Computers

Ok- was scratching my head trying to find a Atari 5200/8-bit emulator, and just thought- it seems like it would be easy enough to take advantage of the x86 emulator at http://www-jpc.physics.ox.ac.uk/ and then have autoexec.bat in each virtual environment in turn run various DOS-based emulators (of which there are many, including some for the 5200). So a DOS-based emulator running within a web-based/Java-based emulator! If I have time, I might try to figure this out, but feel free to take it on if you'd like. I wonder... if you used the webbased x86 emulator to run a browser which in turn viewed the same page... nah. -

To correct myself, MAME can emulate Atari (arcade) games and has overlay for some games, so what I said was incorrect.
-
MP3 playback? JPEG/GIF backgrounds (I assume for doing overlays)? Holy cow! Mix that with my "be able to play with others online" idea and you have the trifecta of "what would be cool but won't probably ever be done in an Atari console/emulator" (I would say in a classic game emulator, but MAME, Vectrex emus, and others can do the overlays at least). Wouldn't it be awesome for it to start playing Also Sprach Zarathustra (Theme from 2001) whenever Space Invaders starts?

I'm going to read into this one and assume that Legacy Engineering (you and Curt only?) are engaged in a project currently. I'm also betting that it isn't the FB3 (at least as previously designed). I'm finally betting that you don't want to discuss it because someone else might steal the idea, not due to contract (like was previously the case).

Has classic gaming gone stale?
Fort Apocalypse replied to Fort Apocalypse's topic in Classic Console Discussion
It wasn't 'classic' back in the 80s. It was contemporary. Actually, what was 'classic' in the 80's was what was contemporary in the 60's and 70's (notice 'video' is not part of the quote)... "Classical music" was a term probably first coined in the 19th century (assumedly 1836) to group a certain class of music that was created from the time from Bach to Beethoven (according to Wikipedia). Even though sometimes people get confused about whether music is Classical, Baroque, etc. (because they all sound very similar), it defines a type of music that general is of a certain period that doesn't change much. By the same token, "classic gaming" a.k.a. "retrogaming" has a modern definition that is established that does not mean just playing older games like Shoot the Moon or Vintage Board Games, if that is what you are saying. Examples of the modern definition of "classic gaming": * http://classicgaming.com/ - I doubt they're giving up the domain name. * In Wikipedia, Classic Gaming a.k.a. Retrogaming a.k.a. old-school gaming are defined as the hobby of playing and collecting older computer, video, and arcade games. * In the Urban Dictionary, the NES is described as a "classic gaming console". * Googling for "Classic Gaming" brings up a number of results at the top all focused on classic gaming as its definition is described in Wikipedia above. Any reference to old adventure or board gaming seems to either now be called "adventure classic gaming" or "vintage gaming", to differentiate them from "classic gaming". I can't prove that this term and its definition won't change, in fact I'm sure it will, the modern definition of classic gaming is to me the one described by Wikipedia. -
Oops. But Legacy Engineering is no longer contracted by Atari, right? And Atari owns the rights to the FB3 work that you guys did? Granted I think I remember Curt said that 8-bit Atari stuff was now free-domain (sorry if I'm saying this wrong- I'm too lazy at the moment to look up the post). Statis is better than dead or coma. Has Atari expressed any recent intent to go forward in the future with this project, or will Legacy Engineering go with another sponsor/go it alone? Does Legacy Engineering have rights to it?
