Ah. I see. It'll be fun to see how this takes shape step by step. Can't wait to see what kind of dungeon inhabitants you'll dream up!
-
Neat! The dungeon layouts reminds me of another homebrew in development called Paladin, except that yours has an Adventure roaming feel to it. The dungeons does look somewhat constricted. I'm not sure this requires more memory but maybe you can alter or add some wall layouts designed to make the rooms larger when linked together like the example below? Just an idea I thought I'd pass to ya. Great start you got there though! Then again, perhaps you'll need to keep the dungeons simple as it is to keep it at 2k. Maybe this can develope into something more grand than 2k if you should ever decide to do a similar project like this one as I see alot of great possibilities here for dungeon designs. Keep at it! Man! This gives me a great idea for a new adventure hack!

Just checking back. I realized I forgot to place the tank positions in the Creator Arena so here it is, Creator Arena .......01....XXXXXX............. ......XXX............XXX...... ...XXX...................XX..... .XXXXX..................XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX..............XXXXXXX... ..XXXXXXXXXXXXX...XXXXXX........ .......XXXXXXX....07........XXXX XXXXXXXXX.........XXXXXX...XXX.. .XXXXXXX.....XXXXXXXXX.......... ...........XXXXXXXXX....XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX................ ...figure I throw in a couple more designs while no one is looking... Sitting Duck XXX.XX........XX.............XXX ....X...X............XXXXXXXX..X .....X........................X. ...........X.........XXXXX...... .XXXXX.XX.X..X...............XX. ............X.XXXXX.XX.......... XX.01.X.07...............XXX.... ..X..XX..XX...XXXXXXX...XX....XX ......................X.....XXX. ..XXX..XXX.XXX.......X...XXXX... ......................XXXX...... Narrow Strip .XXXXXXXX.XXXXXX................ ......01........XXXX............ ....XXXXX........XXXXXXXX....... .......XXX.........07XXXXX...... XXXXXXXXXXXXXX....XXXXXXXXXXXXXX ................................ XXXXXXXXXXX......XXXXXX..XXXXXXX XXXXXXX...........XXX........XXX XXXXX..............X...........X XXX................X..........XX ......................XXXX.XXXXX Sitting Duck is an experiment design where there's a single tight spots that if a spawning tank reappeared in will be trapped and can only turn and aim from small openings in the almost enclosed space while the other tank is free to move around the trapped tank.

Wow, looks like your guess was right on PressureCooker...kudos! Talk about predestined! And thanks to you Bob for dedicating your time to completing this very unique game of yours. Looking forward to the store release!
-
Congratulations Nathan! You made the honors! I thought Gomez had this one as really I liked his entry better than my own but hey, you got the gold!.

I agree. Also, a box helps to keep the cart and all the extras from getting shelf and user wear and tear. Plus, presentation sells!

Is owning a rom or proto of an unreleased game suppose to make the person who own them special? Suppose nobody cared if that rare rom got lost or erased? Should anyone care? I don't think so. If it's in the hands of one owner, let the person do as they wish and let it shape who they are afterward. Personaly I think other than for legal reasons, every rom and proto should be avaliable to enjoy either by distributing for free in a MAME like archive online musume or finish them on cart for profit like homebrewers do. Unfortunately I in particular don't own anything rare (except for some personal hacks I made ), I can't program and can only accept what is to be that's out there already. People like me want to play these games for enjoyment, that's what it's for. Games should be sold to support those who make them, that's why we buy them. If someone want to sit on a rare proto or unreleased rom like a goose with a golden egg then I simply treat that game and it's owner like they don't exsist. What's anyone suppose to do? Make comments, kick and scream, hate the individual or offer crazy amounts of money to get them to make it available to the public? It's hardly woth it if the person is greedy and I would'nt put any money in their pocket if they did'nt deserve it in spite whatever they have. Status and respect don't always come from one's possesions but from who we are as individuals. Folks like myself who can only afford to buy a game at the consumer level of $25 - $50 in cart form should not even acknowlege those who want to sit on these rare proto and unrelaesed what have you because it tends to puff them up. If they want to profit big by waiting for a big money offer, they may have to bring about to the surface what they own to get attention from those who are willing to pay their price (even if I could, i'd never). The roms will just exchange hands with others in their leauge until it lands on someone who will make it available to the rest of us and that can take a long time, maybe never. But if it does happen, that's the person who deserve to be acknowledged while the others who were in it for the big money will be forgotten. I say, let those who want to sit on the rare stuff, even if it were historic, be buried in the grave with it and weep not for the loss. It's not worth anything if there's not one willing to exchange the accountability for owning it. That said, now i'll go back to waiting for the new hombrews in developement to be released. At lease that's alot more promising.

limited or not, if every 5200 Adventure II were sold at $50 in a box indefinately, this sort of scalpping would much less likely ever have happened. Of course that's being unrealistic with printing cost and all but I guess a box do make all the difference for a game this special to a collector and/or those who just want to play it. Maybe a print run of 1500 boxes next time? And never disclose to the public how many boxes are left until it's almost depleated, just to discourage anybody anticipating a shortage and buying up to resell. And reserve about %10 of that for shows like the MGC

I think you may be mistaken...read this thread A little project I started Nice mazes Oops.. I'm sorry DEBRO. guess I did'nt research far back enough. I did a search on berzerk in the forums and did'nt come across your thread. Thanks for bringing that to my attention; I corrected the first post to reflect that. And I'm glad you like the new mazes. Seems you've already been ahead of me long before about getting permission from other berzerk hackers to combine all their features into one complete binary. Although your diagonal shots are not in this particular hack, I would like with your permission to see it in there along with Mike's VE hack. I also would like to see at least more mazes added as well by anyone willing. I know it depends on time and the gaming public's interest and I'm not just proposing; my contribute here should tell anyone I'm serious and the new mazes I did will hopfully be the motivation to that next step if ever, I mean berzerk VE goes back since 2002. I hope someone picks up on this revival before this thread becomes dead and long forgotten. (remember the fate of pacmanplus' DEFENDER arcade? I'm sure anyone can relate). Anyway, I have alot of maze designs and that along with other people's combined hack efforts will make this latest update more complete than ever. Thanks for you post DEBRO and hope to hear from you soon and I hope everyone is enjoying the new maze's challenge.

Welcome to BERZERK ARCADE VE. It's the only title I can think of and I'm not sure if it's used already, if so just let me know. Anyway, this is really a hack of someone else's hack done five years ago by Mike Mika called BERZERK VE (voice enhanced). The atari 2600 original Berzerk code had several unique hacks done by many others -but nobody actually made any truely different mazes to this fun shooter, which is what I done here. All the mazes are now totaly redrawn with more complex patterns and the robots and player character have been reduced in size to make navigating the passageways easier. The humaniod's animation is all new too and the robot's very slightly. I have over 20 different maze designs although I can only include 4 in a single binary. I was thinking of separate bins with different mazes but I'll just start off with this for now. BERZERK_Arcade_VE.bin I know plenty of people would like to see a complete 2600 version of berzerk that include features already accomplished by others such as diagonal shots by DEBRO, and exits that are blocked off on one side by supercat. And perhaps even programmer(s) who could tweak the code to include more mazes to explore, or even an atarivox version. Unfortunatly, I have no coding skills and I don't know if my efforts here will initiate anyone who does. It is my hope that it will. Please enjoy my contribution to this hack that will hopefully, with the combined contribution of others, will work it's way towards a perfection of this great game for all to appreciate. ... Edit: :!: I found an exit bug in the first posted binary and tried to fix it but it keeps coming back. I think it has to do with the humaniod now being shorter so I modified one of the mazes with an extra opening and left the bug in there as a hidden escape trick. After playing for some time I found it rather helpful though it's still a cheat. I'll let you figure this one out for yourself if you have'nt already down loaded the first bin. All comments are welcomed and thanks for checking in!

I saw that little animated knight guy...That was pretty frickin cool. So you can be other characters in the game, like the knight? That is pretty awesome too! BTW, what was your sprite you made? the little red dragon. Though Ron wanted to include as many icons as space allowed, that one did'nt make the final cut, but I'm happy with what ever others he did manage to squeeze in there.
-
Yeah, I know what you mean. I was actually on top of it since the Adventure II alternate icon contest which I made it into the finalist along with many others. The two winning icons were a 3-D square and a wonderfully animated little knight. That was great fun and a cool way to resolve the main character issue. I can't wait to see those two winning icons in action! I think they were a couple more icons Ron added later but I forget which one's they were. Btw-- did anybody figure out how to unlock those alternate icons? I'm simply clueless! I waited for the game's release instead of pre-ordering and the numbered version sold out before I can say "Finally!" ..I consider myself fortunate to get at least the short run of the un-numbered boxed version which took off just as quick in spite it was limited to only two copies per person. I did ordered two on impluse because of that and ended up buying a system on ebay shortly afterward, just to play one of em! Now I'm really glad I did!
-
You are getting docs. You are also getting it $5 cheaper. That's true for those who pre-orderded but for those who paid after the release, that would be $10 cheaper which is a 20% discount from the $50 boxed edition, which is not bad at all.
-
Box & docs and a shinny sticker # Don't forget the other surprises Such as? How bout someone just lay it out flat. So the non Limited Editions aren't boxed? Here's a link to the thread that show pictures of all that were included in the "limited edition" package that Al used in the store at the time they were available. The "boxed edition" was the same package without the foil numbered sticker on back of the box (this is the version I got at $50, I'm not sure the price of the limited though as they sold out before I ordered). The "unboxed version" include all the extras except for the 'gold key token' and of course the box itself. The only way to get a boxed version now is from a 'second-hand deal' from someone who does and is willing to part with. (probably not!) After a long time of anticipation, I'm not surprised the boxed limited sold out upon release. I played my copy and it's a very good game worth the wait.

... you took the word right out of my mouth! btw, ...Robert Gomez

I got one for you. PM me.

looks very interesting. I would like to check this out but I don't know of any atari800 emulator to run your game with. Care to post a link to one that will work on a windows xp?

Great review! and even the highest score for the sound/music catagory so my congratulations to Erik Ehrling in that department! And to you Darrell for earning the 100% overall score and landing the #1 spot on the list!

Yes. A breather from this sound like a good idea. I'm glad I saw more of myself and learned a self taught lesson from it and I feel alot better now that it's behind us. I really look forward to starting fresh again, thanks Dave and rest up! I'll keep in touch.

I just finished posting before i found your last PM here. Yeah I know what you mean. Maybe I'm too fussy. and you're right it's suppose to be fun and look at where we're at now. I'm wondering what went wrong? Man I feel terrible. I'm really sorry if rocked the boat while I escalated my post to being more pointed. I really want to take back what I said earlier. I'm sorry for being a prick.

Well.... my thinking on that is it's kind of like Stormbringer from Elric. It allows you to use it, but it has its own agenda and extracts a price from the wielder. If people complain, we'll see.... If people complain? Aye ya yaaaeeeii, Dave, you're not even listening to any of my ideas. A complaint is one thing but I thought you said you were open to suggestions. To make that the only kind of sword to upgrade with is not a fun thing at all. There's only two kinds of emergencies: low HP and SP points. Is that the best time to use a life draining sword??? please envision something else. Okay, where's the strategy in that? In an emergency there is none. if I have 2 points of HP left while fighting a bearbug then I'm one sword swing away from killing us both. A choice of two deaths. If I use heal the monsters next turn will bring me back down. if the monster don't kill me the sword will. so you're dammed if you do, and dammed if you don't constantly worry to keep your HP very high if you plan to use the life sucking sword. I'm sorry but that don't sound like fun. Please can somebody, anybody reading this tell me, what's wrong with my suggestion in post #48 two posts above? I'm open to any comments too you know, that's what forums like this are for, right?

Yup. I am still working on it as time permits. I'm currently trying to get it in shape for a demo at the MGC '07. Anyway, your timing is good. I was going to try to get up with you and see if you could bang out a 1 frame attack sprite for the wolf, goblin, & dragon (and the new orc if you have time - I like him a lot). More may come later, but that's what I need for the demo. Glad that worked out for ya. I really am having a great time with your game as I have with MM . Nice to see the magic items about to come into play soon but would'nt it be better to have the sword feed off the spell points? Feeding off the life points don't really sound like a very good compromise. Better yet, upon finding the sword why not add a new option to the main menu and give the player a choice to power up the magic sword at the cost of 1 turn, the monster will have the next turn to attack afterward of course and at least there's a chance the monster may land a hit or miss before the players next turn. That sound like a better compromise along with keeping the option available to fall back on (in other words, no SP drainage for this particular option). There's even other ways the boots can come into play that I can pretty much tell because i been playing your game alot while exploring some possibilities instead of simply waiting for the next build. (and found another bug, will PM you about it shortly) I also redid the look of the treasure chest and magic items and one more treasure as well as some suggested abilities. I also updated the sprites back in post #45 as some of the pixels had two colors on the same line and had to correct them, namely the orc, dwarf and dragon. i have the still frames layed out here so you can see em' all at once. There's also a new attack frame for the dwarf swinging his hammer upward which looks better to me instead of sideways. I hope you can include the werebat as that's my fav right now, it has that sinister look to it and the attack frame has a nice dynamic feel to it.
-
Thanks and yes, that's right. I'm planning on a cart release for CF but I'll have to postpone that little project to do at least a couple of labels for Elevators amiss first.
-
Heh, I was about to start creating a label for my first posted game hack. I may just as well do one for this contest while i'm at it.
-
I updated some of the monsters with an attack frame and a couple of standing frame modifications. I don't know if David will use the 2-frame animated standing sprites for an idea I had of having battles in real time using these frames so you can time your attack to see who gets first hit instead of just exchanging blows to the roll of the dice, but I hav'ent heard from him as of late (guess he's very busy with real life stuff ). Been pretty quiet here too so I'll post a hack of the last build with these new monsters in place soon to keep this thread alive. There's only room for 6 monsters in his last build so far, hopefully I can use all 10 in his next build.
