The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
NightSprinter replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I know, but I only had a buck or two to spend outside of food. Right now I'm having to deal with some major spinal problems, and trying to find a way to legally get enough money for an MRI done without a loan. If I end up on disability as a result, I might be able to afford a few games a month. Beside, the games I see there are virtually the same whenever I go back. -

Whoa! Electroplankton is at a flea market already? It' only a month old, and is only sold via mail orderin the US. Perhaps you got a Japanese one that someone imported and didn't like? I think that it's really a cool app as it is more of a gizmo than a game, but it seems that lots of reviews are disappointed in it because it doesn't have any competitive angle to it, nor any unlockables. From a musical point of view, it's hard to create anything meaningful in it as it is set up to be really easy and do little repeating patterns, but they are soothing and the overall experience is still fun. I hope that you enjoy it - especially hooked up to a stereo. The DS has some very nice sound chips in there. 1021494 I just asked my friend on AIM since he went back home today (he came up to visit from another city). He got it brand-new still sealed for $30. It IS the American version. He just registered the game at Nintendo's official website and didn't have a problem in doing so. I'd hae to say that was quite an interesting find for him. I was tempted to pick up a copy of Star-Wars Arcade for the 32x for a couple bucks before student discount, but decided against it. Plus I saw a JVC X'Eye at the booth "Kids at Heart". Forgot the price, but I noticed some of his stuff was slightly pricey (I think around $45 for a Jaguar with DOOM cartrige), and around $35 for a Lynx II with two games case and battery pack (not sure on the batterypack). -

Snagged yet another '77 original-release cartridge (Surround, but was missing the end-label sadly) for $.90 with a student discount at Cybertron Video Games over at FleaWorld, and a friend of mine who went with me managed to find a boxed copy of Electroplankton (I think it was $25, I just know it was under $35 boxed, and a Gyromite cartridge for $1.99 that had the FamiCom converter in it (he actually weighed the cartridge compared to another one). -
I don't know, the palettes make the opening for BallBlazer look a bit off. Why is that?

Damn you Tom.. just.. damn you.. Your collection makes me cry.. But seriously, that is the NICEST collection I've ever seen Tom. The sheer tidiness and organization of it all is phenomenal. Plus you've pretty much given me full reason to open up all the shrinkwrapping on boxed videogames now when I buy them. You're pretty much an inspiration to collectors. Oh yeah.. beautiful house, and love the jungle/rainforest like sceenery from what I could see behind the wall of your back yard.

Well, if you don't mind the price, check out Best Electronics for some 5200 sticks. A lot of the ones they have can be upgraded to the longer-lasting gold pads and the newer-rev. circuits.

Yesterday I was running a little late to class, but I decided "what the hell" and stopped by this no-name thrift shop on Orange Avenue in Orlando having stopped by Goodwill on Orange Blossom Trail to pick up an N64 cartridge shelf for $1.79 after student discount (Genesis and SNES games fit perfect in it too!). Found numerous NES/SNES loose titles (including a boxed Street Fighter II for SNES) ranging anywhere from $2 to $6. I passed up on them though. I DID however pick up a WingMan Warrior for under $4 (boot for hatswitch missing, slight damage to the foam on button 3, rubber boot around the bottom of the joystick handle's all funky). Also at that one Goodwill (sadly their "closeout store" wasn't open since it was after 5pm) I spotted an HP DeskJet 6450 for $10, but decided to pass it up as I wasn't sure about its working condition. Might stop by that no-name store and pick up the Gyromite cart to see if it has an FC-NES converter. [Edit] Turns out the trim dials weren't set. The stick works as either a "3-axis, 4-button joystick" or a "2-axis, 4-button joystick with POV". -
Games that work with 1-button controllers

I agree, Mitch. It is a good start. Though the expansion could help it out, ya know? -
If you opened your own arcade what would be in it?

Thank you, Shagohod. I've been trying to find out what "Senjou no Ookami" translated to. I knew the last two words, but never what "Senjou" meant. Now I know what it refers to when the original title for Commando is used. -
Broke down and opened all three boxes (maily due to the condition they were ending up in, so I did the same for ALL shrinkwrapped stuff I had. I think it's better this way ), and sure enough all THREE were the NTSC variety. Interestingly-enough I found out that while Ikari Warriors is in fact a two-player game, it's alternating unlike the 7800, arcade, MSX2, NES, C64, ST, and Amiga versions.

Games that work with 1-button controllers
NightSprinter replied to NightSprinter's topic in Atari 7800
Great job, guys. Keep it up. Oesil, the reason why I wanted this is so this can be added to the FAQ at AA's 7800 pages. While I know that atari7800.org has a list, it's not very readable (seperate colums, the use of colored fonts such as orange against a white background, etc.). -
TGM, if possible can you see what the "mode select" button does exactly? My boxed Pinball Breakaway (Sears Sports Center version) has no documentationin the box, and I'm not sure if there are just multiplayer varieties, or if they actually adjust something in the games.

What can I say? I love my classics. -
I'll just re-state my earlier post: is there a way to build the adapter so that it does NOT hack the Trak-Ball controller? Considering if something happens to it not only is your adapter shot, but the user just lost a perfectly-good Trak-Ball due to the mod.

Yeah, I've been fiddling around with some games on my 7800 to see what their functionality is with single-button controllers from the 2600 are. Here are the results for the nine games I own so far. Pole Position II: No brakes (lack of second button). Galaga: No problems. Dig Dug: No roblems. Joust: No problems. Desert Falcon: Power-ups activate while button is held or pressed. Ballblazer: No problems. Scrapyard Dog: UNPLAYABLE (cannot jump or throw cans). Winter Games: No problems. Super Huey UH-IX: UNPLAYABLE (unable to do anything but move in Arcade Mode) I would love to hear from other 7800 owners with their input on the playability of other 7800 games with single-button controls. It's about time we got an official list made (especially for the FAQ on the 7800 pages on the main site).

Sorry about that Dave. I didn't know. I'm getting too caught up in schoolwork to pay attention to things most of the time. Since you've retracted the offer I can understand. I apologize once again about this.

Well, time to get a new Teleivsion. I already know it's got to have at least one coax input and two Stereo A/V inputs (at least one S-Video), but I'm still confused as to what to buy. I'm looking at getting up to 27" (30 if I have to push it). But of course need to keep it light-gun compatible (gotta give the SMS, XE, and NES guns a workout). I'll check out the pawn shops and thrift stores (good luck to me on the latter) if need-be, just need to find a way to replace having to use both a stereo TV with just coax and a VCR with only stereo A/V. [Edit] I forgot to mention that outside of maybe purge RGB for certain computers (Amiga, ST, C128) that most of the 8-bit computers will be connected to the TV.

Genghis Khan for NES
NightSprinter replied to sandmountainslim's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Yeah, Koei always knew how to make it hard to maintain the upper hand. -
I will also agree that it took eight weeks to for my second copy of Ikari and my only copy of Moto to arrive, but they DID in fact arrive. The first copy came quickly only because Claudia already had a copy in Jacksonville ready to go. The other games took so long because of customs like a lot of others here state. I will say that Claudia isn't a dishonest person, she's just another businessperson who is trying to help get the remaining stock in Venezuela sold so they don't sit in a warehouse and collect dust. She's answered every single e-mail I sent to her and showed that she had the best interest in her customers it seemed. Oh, on an off-topic note: the games I got from her auctions ARE the NTSC versions (yes, I broke down and opened the shrinkwrapping, because the boxes were starting to get crushed from it).

NES vs. NoaC - Screen Shots and Audio Clips
NightSprinter replied to FujiSkunk's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Ah, it's ok. If I find a copy at Flea World next weekend would ya mind trading a few common 2600 carts for it? I'd trade you the copy I already have.. but I sorta don't want to do the work of getting a "100% - PERFECT!" rating again. Getting 100% in the Extra Game isn't fun since the NES version doesn't save Extra Game data. -
AR, I'm still going to ship it to you. I'm just waiting for my financial aid disbursement check to come in from college first before I do so. I apologize for not telling you that earlier.
-
This is just strange.. I'm not seeing any sort of physical damage to the torroid. If I fried it and caused smoke to come from it (y'know, the horrid-smelling, invisible type of smoke?), wouldn't there be "some" kind of visibly-evidant damage? What would be the problem in this case?
-
Also if you have nine pieces of candy, find a zone that has a picture of a guy talking at the top of the screen and hit the fire button. That'll call up Elliot. He'll take the nine pieces of candy from you, and in exchange will bring you a phone piece.

Which is one reason I agree to go ahead and open them, strictly from a collector's standpoint. If you leave that shrinkwrap on there long enough, it damages the box, and actually probably decreases its value then. But if you take the shrinkwrap off and take good care of the box, you can usually keep it in its original intended shape with relative ease. And that's just from a collector's standpoint. But I'm a player more than I am a collector, so, as I've posted many many times before on this forum, I say rip that sucker open and let the good time roll, my friend. 1016166 Thank you for the statement, X. After having read that I'm not really going to feel guilty taking the shrinkwrapping off ANY of my sealed games now (even if they are duplicates) I mean sure they take away that "completely brand-new" value, but it's still the game with everything in the box, plus saving the game from excessive damage. I also heard from a few local gamer friends of mine that shrinkwrapping is even MORE dangerous to battery-backed games, due to the fact that the unused battery will start to corrode over the year.
