Yes, having just purchased a 7800 over the holidays since I'll be getting some extra cash in a couple weeks you can put me down for one as well. Would love to get into high-score battles with a friend down the road.

Hey, it's a hell of a great port regardless Stephen. I just wish I could find some sorta schematics to connect some atari controllers or such to the sync port on my iPAQ hx2415 and play the games properly while on the go.

My First Video Game EVER.
NightSprinter replied to Atariboy2600's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Lessee.. Atari 2600 Vader, Intellivision II, and ColecoVision. All because my brother was born seven years before I was. *chuckles* Couldn't get any sweeter'n that. -
Save for some flickering issues I've encountered in Caverns of Mars and Return of Yars, I'm pretty damn happy even if I DIDN'T get the GCC prototype of Millipede on my system. I honestl wanna see what Curt can do with the FB3.

The Disappearance of Classic Arcades

Thought that was bad, Lutz? Try stumbling onto someone who wanted to charge a full DOLLAR for a single play on those Class of '81 machines. -
The real Comparsions of real NES and GenerationNex
NightSprinter replied to Lacan's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I'm not a mod, but I'm getting sick of this. Omne, Jagasian, and who the hell ever else that wants to change an HONEST COMPARISON thread into a flame war, stay the hell out of this. This guy just wanted to do a purely objective comparison of the NEX (and any other NOAC-based clone) to an actual NES to provide full, FACTUAL evidence on the difference between the current generation of NOAC versus the actual hardware of an NES. If you little crybabies don't stop your damn flamewars right now, I'm going to get started with the reporting. Lacan, I actually applaud your wanting to just do a more scientific approach by taking recordings of both systems and giving an objective comparison. I actually would LIKE IT if you can find a good capture card and get some actual gameplay recordings done. Incompatibilities aside, I would like to have proof of any audio/visual differences from an NOAC compared to the real thing. Try various games, like Pac-Man, Kirby's Adventure, Galaga, Legacy of the Wizard, and The Guardian Legend to get some good comparisons. Don't let a couple of brats who have personal agendas against each other scare you off. Besides, maybe someone who creates NES clone-based stuff might want to get a higher quality NOAC made to make it more compatible. -
The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
NightSprinter replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Thank you very much. I tightened the springs down and it stopped the directional sticking. Still hard to input the 1972 code on the FB2, but I'll live with it. I have to say this stick initially feels very awkward compared to a regular CX-40. Btw, was CX-10 the model number of the 1977 sticks? -

A.J. I just replaced the cable with one from a working CX-40. Turns out the cable was just bad. Now I have problems with up and down sticking. (When I press up or down on my FB2 to select a game the bracket keeps moving in that direction until I try to center it myself.) -

That's pretty cool. Anyone know how to refurbish a non-working CX10? I was looking into the replacement boards from Best Electronics, but I'm not sure if they'd fit. -
The Disappearance of Classic Arcades

The original Oddysey system had special overlays to use with their cartridges. -

I never thought it'd happen, but just today at Game Trader over at FleaWorld in Sanford I managed to find an original CX-10 joystick for $5 (sans hex disc). The controller looks to be in immaculate condition, except for the fact it doesn't respond (I'm guessing the CX-10's circuit went bad). But I guess one can refurbish it with a new circuitboard or somethin'. -
Heh, I try. All I do is look up stuff when I'm not having to see the doctor (damn back.. can't wait to get some x-rays done next week..), or working on stuff for my A+ Hardware and LAN (Network+) classes.. when I'm not playing games.

Some patience is really needed here, folks. You gotta keep in mind Curt is still busy with things like the third revision of the Flashback 2, the Flashback 3, and numerous other projects. I mean it's frickin' sweet how he's actually looking into a keyboard component, but keep in mind that since he DOES work for Atari/Infogrames he doesn't have the time to devote his time and energy on one single project. So I say give him time and let him post any status updates when he can get around to it.

Considering I like both systems for what they offer, one must quote from Linkin Park: "In the end, it doesn't really matter." I like the 7800 for unique games like Scrapyard Dog, Desert Falcon, and Ballblazer (in addition to the 2600 backwards-compatibility), and the NES for some of its platformers and RPGs. End of story.

Only in terms of graphics speed. I'll give you the specs from two sites I found. *taken from ConsoleDatabase.com* Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom Technical Specifications * CPU type: Motorola 6502 8-bit (MOS) * CPU speed: 1.79 MHz * RAM: 16 Kbit (2 Kbyte) * Video RAM: 16 Kbit (2 Kbyte) * Picture resolution: 256 x 240 pixels * Colors Available: 52 colours * Max colors at once: 24 colours * Max sprite size: 8 x 8 pixels or 8 x 16 pixels * Max sprites: 64 sprites (max per line: * Min/Max Cart Size: 192 Kbit - 4 Mbit * Sound: PSG sound * Picture Scroll: 2 h.v *taken from Atari7800.com* Atari 7800 Specs: CPU : 6502C RAM : 4K ROM : 4K BIOS ROM CPU SPEED : 1.79 Mhz GRAPHICS SPEED : 7.16 Mhz STORAGE: 32K Cartridge ROM BANKSWITCHING : No SOUND : TIA Custom Sound RESOLUTION : 320 X 200 COLORS : 256 PORTS : › 2 Controller Ports › 1 Cartridge Bay › 1 Expansion Bay › R/F Outs › Power Input So honestly with the possible exception of sound, it seems like the 7800 technically beats the NES on almost all fronts.

The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
NightSprinter replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Went to the Union Park Goodwill store, and snagged two original '77 release cartridges for a couple bucks each. I got "01 - COMBAT", and "53 - BLACKJACK". Surprised I found the 77 release labels in the wild. -
To be honest, I find these Compy Pros to be too awkward to use. They'd probably be better-used if converted to either some 7800 sticks or a pair of 2-button Amiga sticks.

Oh man, I'm kinda bad about it as well. I'm constantly having to re-arrange my bedroom to acommodate my loose and boxed games, my various game systems, any and all controllers, powersupplies, and RF switches (also video/monitor cables), computer desk, dresser, and TV stand. I'm getting to the pont where I'm having to get someone I know who does know how to arrange things pretty well to help me manage how my collection is laid out. Plus I've been scouring the Orlando region to find thrift stores that would have some decent prices on Atari games, and maybe find some stuff I can get that wouldn't require a trip to either the flea market or eBay (with no luck. Closest thrift store charges $1.99 for Atari 2600 games (most being commons), while a used pair of paddles are $5.99). Plus let's not forget the fact that some of us need to refurbish any problematic or non-working systems and/or controllers when possible. So.. yeah.. it can get pretty bad when you step back and look at it.. *keeps his sealed copies of Ikari Warriors for the 2600 and sealed copy of Motorodeo in sealed condition*

Thing is, Mitch, there's another pair of buttons on each side of the cable in addition to the main fire buttons on top. Like I said I'll go and buy 'em tomorrow before my 4pm class and take a couple pictures to upload. [Edit as of 1:08pm on Jan. 26] I bought the Compy Pros, and it turns out they're for the NES of all things. I'm uploading some pictures, but would really like some imput from those who're familiar with the entire Competition Pro line (especially if there's someone from Europe who can give input) to find out what button is what, and maybe how to possibly convert the microswitch/leafswitch hybrid from an NES stick to maybe a 7800 or an SMS stick. [Edit as of 1:20pm] Ok, it turns out the top-left button is "A", the top-right button is "B", the button to the left of the cord is "Start", and to the right of the cord is "Select". Did I just pick up two very unique joysticks?

I just played Qix for the first time ever
NightSprinter replied to RickHarrisMaine's topic in Atari 5200
Well, if I remember right there were ports for the IBM(?), Amiga, AtariST(?), C64(?) and NES. Not sure how the rest played as I don't have a copy of any of those, plus I don't own an ST or Amiga, and my C64 systems are dead. -
There is no Y-cable. It's just a plain 9-pin connector. S&F is actually a pretty good place to go to. Sometimes their prices are slightly higher than some others (especially for controllers), but the people who run it are genuinely nice people and seem to definitely know their stuff on videogames (considering whenever I've been there I'm seeing one or both of them playing SOME videogame or another). Thing is I want to know why the buttons are there. If I have to I'll go and buy them right away tomorrow and take pictures.
-
Hey everyone. I stopped by S&F Videogames in downtown Orlando between classes today, and when I was given a chance to look at the joysticks and gamepads behind the counter I noticed there was a unique variation of my Competition Pro joystick. The controller had a second button on the front on each side. Were these designed for the 7800, or more like a MasterSystem/Amiga type button? I'm getting 'em anyway since I do like my CompyPro. I just want to know what the second button was for.

Yeah, I remember when I got the 7800 I won from eBay as a Christmas present I got with some cash last year. Man it was great plugging that thing in and enjoying Atari all over again. Went to the flea market not too long after New Year's and bought Galaga, Desert Falcon, Joust, Ballblazer, Winter Games, Scrapard Dog, and Super Huey UH-IX. Been playing the hell out of Pole Position II, Galaga, Ballblazer, and Desert Falcon (FINALLY got to stage 3). Gonna give the others a try and will eventually purchase more cartridges. Also if I can learn how to solder right and do some woodwork I could even see about making my own arcade-style joystick unit for the 7800 and play some of those classics the way they're supposed to be played. Plus I'm pretty happy with how well it works with my 2600 games. I couldn't believe that despite a total lack of the expansion port mine worked perfect with Robot Tank.

Proudest Video Gaiming Moment?
NightSprinter replied to silverpoodleman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Let's see.. I beat Legacy of the Wizard. WITHOUT a password, I had maxed out TetrisDX at Lv. 30 (got something along the ranks of 160 lines), got around 101,000 in Battlezone for the 2600, beat Donkey Kong '94 the very DAY I bought it (and caused the batteries to make a rather loud "POP" noise from nonstop play), acquired the TRUE "Good Ending" to Kid Icarus (999 hearts, all 3 special weapons, Health at Lv. 5, and strength Lv. 5) without cheats or passwords, beat the final level of the "World Tour" mode in the DC version of Street Fighter Alpha 3 (it's hell.. part 1 is you VS Evil Ryu and Akuma, part 2 is VS Shin Akuma & Normal M. Bison, final part is against TWO Shin M. Bisons). I think my next greatest moment will be when I can beat the Brachioraidos in Final Fantasy IV Advance (an avoidable monster encounter in the Lunar Ruins who is more difficult than ANY of the "Ultimate Bosses" in the Ruins). -
Since we sorta hijacked the "greatest arcade games of all time" thread with a discussion about why the old arcades are disappearing, I thought it was about time to make a thread just about that. So feel free to keep posting the discussion here.
