Atariage's trivia section

PMSL. If you practiced as you preached, your post count would be about 20% of what it is now. -
Trustworthy repairs (east coast USA preferred)
Rybags replied to OldAtarian's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Have you tried swapping components between the systems? Best bet would be first CPU, Antic, MMU. Try one at a time -
In theory you could possibly reuse one object on a badline of a normal display, although there'd be conditions. - the first position has to be left of the start of normal screen - by how much I'm not sure, but I'd guess at least 4 colour-clocks, maybe even 8. But that's only 1 or 2 pixels of a 4x expanded object that wouldn't appear in the normal "window". - due to DMA, there'd be no chance of changing colour or graphics, so the usefullness would be a bit limited. You can change position and graphics of an object as soon as it's displaying, but changing colour will be immediate (aside from the normal 1 colour-clock delay when changing colour registers)

According to the Atari800Win+ Help file... they return reversed up/down axis values.

ATASM issue with .BYTE and other issues
Rybags replied to Justin Payne's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
Run address can generally go anywhere. AtAsm has the annoying habit though of constructing your load module in address order, and not in order that stuff appears in the program, e.g. if you have a segment at $6000 then one later at $4000, the object module will put them back in order. Also, it's generally not a good idea to assemble direct to zero-page or any low memory area < $480 - best to just set those locations within the program, otherwise you might get conflict with some DOSes or loaders. -
The "newer" grey carts are utter crap quality compared to the classic brown. The old ones could probably stand being thrown against a brick wall, where the newer ones would just break into a dozen pieces.

I'm sure he'd love to spend over $1,000 and the best part of 10 years just accumulating the 50 or so must-have best games.
-
So, no APE/SIO2PC interface yet? You can build one for like 6 bucks. If you have an Atari cassette drive, we could probably rig some system to transfer ATRs to real floppies, but it would be a bit of a slow and tedious process. You'd need to create cassettes by recording via the PC sound output on a normal tape recorder, then do sector copies from Atari tape drive to disk drive.

With extremely few exceptions, they're universal. Some modern games won't work on NTSC - and one or two older games used a region locking kind of system.
-
That's pretty cool, although IMO it needs to play a little faster. NTSC - too fast, so probably midpoint between the 2 systems.
-
You'd probably have more luck waving a smelly sock under their nose. More funny and original too.

You obviously never saw any of the more interesting products being developed in the Atari Labs division, then. Thought controlled video games? Yowzers! Why do you think I used bold in that sentence? Something sitting on an engineer's shelf is worthless until people can actually buy and use it.
-
Most of the great engineers and programmers were gone years before Jack came along. If not for the earlier bastardry, companies like Activision and Imagic would never have been established. Practically nothing of note hardware-wise was developed and released after the 400/800 by Atari under Warner. All of it was based on existing products and the hard work had already been done. Not to take anything away from the XL series, but the advances over the 400/800 could have been just as easily engineered by a homebrew hacker. And, the 5200 in essence was just a cut down cheapened version of the 400.

400 A/V Mod, what connectors to use
Rybags replied to orpheuswaking's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I'd just use what was supplied although I'd replace the 3.5mm audio jack with a single RCA one. If there was room I'd consider wiring 2 more RCA jacks for chroma and luma from the S-video since some monitors expect that. All depends what configuration you'll be running - the ideal setup is to eliminate the need for using adaptors and unnessary clutter. Since the 400 also has the RF cord "permanently attached" I'd also unplug that from inside the computer. -
I've got some doubts about those instructions on the previous page. Some of the pins don't seem to have any correspondence to those printed in the Hardware Manual schematics, or these ones: 400.zip

Number of DMA clock cycles per scanline?
Rybags replied to Robert M's topic in Atari 7800 Programming
PAL have the 14.187 Mhz crystal, same speed as that in the XE computers. I used the one from one of mine for my VBXE machine... then replaced the 7800s one with an NTSC one. -
Nice haul... how much $$$ ? I'd imagine all that would cost over $250 through the normal channels.
-
I think the main objective was to keep the cost down (second to ease of installation). In theory you could just make up an edge connector and just solder the required connections to points on the motherboard and have it inside the machine with the PBI untouched.
-
Maybe ask Steve (classics) about the shells he uses on Atarimax carts.
-
Yeah, the keyboard is an utter joke WRT the cord. I suppose one downside of the 900 concept is that it'd have likely been a multi-board job, plus possibly not so roomy inside to chuck modern-day expansions into.
-
The "900 concept" looks so nice, yet in the end they went with the XEGS, which is arguably the most ugly product Atari ever produced.

A suggestion - make all issues available in a "Preview" form. ie - have selected pages for view, maybe just the first page of each article. Have the first paragraph or two and some pictures visible, then defocus the remainder of the page. That would give prospective buyers at least a taste of what they can expect, and the teaser aspect would make it more likely for them to buy an issue or subscription. I might be able to contribute something too, whether it be a type-in sort of thing (although most of my stuff is available online), or some sort of "how-to" technical article.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQAn0SGDf0M&p=C9F90CB80FCB0ACE&playnext=1&index=33 Plenty of games used public domain songs, in fact most of the Synapse games used old/classic songs.

Both those games can be had on the computer. Most releases were pretty similar - in some cases hackers converted the 5200 versions to run on the computer, as Atari kept some titles 5200 exclusive to encourage sales. There's quite a number of titles from Atari and others that have multiple revisions or are almost entirely different from the ground up, with extra features or better graphics. Pacman, Dig Dug, Mario Bros and Frogger to name just a few.
