  1. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Choplifter-by-Broderbund-for-Atari-400-800-Dan-Gorlin-1982-/321742037340?

Ebay shows me "$67.97 International Priority Shipping to Austria via the Global Shipping Program", PLUS import charges ...

It's just ridiculous. You can ship that game easily for $25 to Austria, insured and tracked with USPS Priority mail.

I wonder if the sellers know how high the international shipping costs are for their items when they use the GSP and how much the end price of the auction is influenced by that because almost no international collector will bid on that auction. If the seller would ship without using the GSP, he/she would probably get much higher bids for the game ...

  2. From a European buyer's point of view I can say that I hate the GSP, it's a big rip-off. I have to pay exaggerated shipping costs plus import taxes for small parcels which would go tax-exempt through the customs otherwise.

One time Pitney Bowes cashed shipping costs that were MUCH higher than the usual priority mail costs and there is NO WAY to claim that. All you get back is an email from the can, but absolutely no help (even worse than with ebay I would say).

So I simply don't bid on items that are shipped with the GSP.

I am afraid that from some day on the GSP will be the only shipping option from the USA to foreign countries. That will be the day when I will stop buying from ebay sellers in the US completely.

  4. Very sad to hear that! I had a lot of email contact with him in the late 90s and early 00s. He invited me to his place several times but I didn't have the money to fly to the USA back then. It's a pity that I never was able to meet him in person.

What I have is a signed copy of his book "Videogames In The Beginning" and a signed prototype copy of his Pinball game for the Odyssey2.

Without Ralph Baer, my life since 1982 would have been a completely different one, with much less fun, much less excitement.

So thank you very much and R.I.P.
