  1. I just coil the cord up and tie wrap it inside, assuming you don't want it anymore. There's lots of room for it inside the case on the left side. Then that way you don't lose the cable.

Good point, but then what if I DO need to use it? Then I have to take the machine apart to get it back out...

I may do that with this 800 and then if I get another one, I'll chop it.

    Thanks for the idea.

  2. Can anyone tell me any possible problems with cutting the RF lead off the back of the 800 and converting it to a female RCA plug?

I now run my 800 solely off a C1702 monitor and having the RF cable off the back is just taking up space. I would like to just have a plug back there where I can connect a RCA plug and run it to a TV if needed.

Let me know your thoughts... Thanks!

  3. Well, I just realized I don't have a basic cartridge for the 800 and 400... I thought there was one in the box, but it turned out to be an old Donkey Kong. Anyway... guess I'll have to wait until I find one to check the GTIA capability.

  4. I recently scored an Atari 800, 400, 410, and 2 2600's off craigslist for $35.

I've done some searching and can't seem to easily find the answers to these questions, so I'll start a new topic:

    1. I seem to remember there was an easy way to tell if my 800 had the GTIA capability. If I remember right, it was simply trying a GR. 9 command, but since I don't have the machine currently hooked up, I can't test that. Can anyone confirm?

    2. I have my 800XL upgraded with the Super Video upgrade. I never realized just HOW MUCH difference that made until I hooked my 400 up and saw the factory default configuration on the same monitor. Is there any such upgrade for the 400 or 800 to clean up the video?

    3. Are there any other upgrades I could do to my 800 that would be worthwhile?

    4. Does anyone have the documentation scanned for the RAMBO-XL upgrade? I have one for my XL in mint (never installed) condition, but I need to get the docs to do the upgrade.

Thanks for the info in advance!!!

    Brian

  5. Ship was already well below sea-level when the Falcon was released. Due to a long history of Vaporware and poor customer support, noone wanted to buy into the Atari name. Also, Atari, having long been known for their game machines, were not taken seriously when they released a computer with more power than most PC's of the time.

If they had shipped the Falcon under a pseudo-company not quickly related to Atari, put a 32MHz chip in it, and built it in a Mega/TT style case (or PC style case), I think it would have done so much better.

  6. I emailed the seller and told them that their prices were WAY overboard and gave them a good idea of what they would go for. She (I assume is a she) said she didn't know anything about them and had no clue what to put on them. Someone had told her that since they were the original ST and 800 models, she could get alot of money for them.

Also, she said she didn't smoke. (Because I asked her if I could share some of what she was smoking). =)

Seems like a nice person, just really clueless about what she has and what they're worth.

  7. I also ran out of space a long time ago in my house, so I built my own room in the basement (about 250sq ft) as my computer lab. I have my 2 gaming PC's on my main desk, then a 2nd desk with my A8 Setup on it (and jaguar), a 3rd desk with my ST setup on it, and a 4th desk with my MP3 recording setup on it. Then I have my workbench where I do all my tech-stuff.

I'd say I'm pretty fortunate to have all the room that I do have, although at times, even THAT seems small.

  8. Hey all... just had to pass this along...

I recently ordered a 32 in 1 WarpOS upgrade, a Happy 1050 Upgrade, a MyIDE, and a registered version of APE from Steve Tucker and AtariMax.

Wow!!! I've got to say, the customer service has been awesome, the upgrade documentation provided was awesome, and I had a really great overall experience.

My 800XL now has the Supervideo 2.1 Upgrade, and all the aforementioned upgrades. I'm running a 480MB hard drive which has a few partitions on it, nowhere near full *yet*.

So, Thanks Steve, and keep up the great work!

    Brian

  9. You can use

    1. 75ohm

    2. 2 150ohm in parallel

    3. combination of resistors in series to get a total of 75ohms

    4. or a 82/68 ohm :D

Just needs to be *close* to 75ohms.

dam prodos beat me to it!

Thanks all... I figured "close enough" would be fine, but I wanted to make sure. My other option would be to cannibalize one of my other XL motherboards for a few 75Ohm resisitors, but I'd prefer not to butcher a good machine for parts. =)

  10. I'm going to attempt the Supervideo 2.1 mod on one of my 800XL's this weekend, but I have found 75Ohm Resistors to be somewhat hard to find. Can I pair up a couple of other resistors to make the 75Ohm, or is it going to be ok to us an 82Ohm or 68Ohm instead?

I've checked with Radio Shack and they don't have any of the 75 Ohm available.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  11. Hi fellow atari users.

I have six tos chips to put into a 520 STFM but I dont know where to put each chip. I tried several combinations going by the number on the chips but I keep getting a red screen of death on the Atari monitor.

These are factory chips can anyone tell me where to put each of the six chips in the six sockets or load a high res photo so I can see where they go?

This particular ST has the six tos chips sockets under the power supply.

Below is a picture of my 520STfm's six TOS chips. The left side of the image is the back of the computer. The bottom of the image is the left-side of the computer. I hope this helps you.

This is my current placings of the chips (note one is strangely more black and shiny). It doesnt work. Prehaps with all my tries they are now paper weights. Anyone want to sell me some old tos chips? lol. Thanks for your help guys.

I could burn you a 6-chip TOS 1.4 set rather easily... say $15 + $2.50 shipped? Where are you located? Email me at bripilot at gmail dot com and we'll get you set up. =)

  12. Dunno about Ebay, but this weekend I picked up an 800XL, 400, 810, 2x 410's, a 1010, and an Atari dedicated printer (Sekosha I think) for $30. Not a bad haul. The only bad thing I can find so far is the 810 doesn't seem to want to spin. Everything else works fine. =) Got it off Craigslist...

Also ordered a 32-in-1, Happy board, MyIDE, and an official version of APE from Steve and I'm anxiously awaiting their arrival.

    What a cool weekend. =)

90% of the time its a loose cable in the 810

That would be awesome if that is all it is. I've not really had a whole lot of time to look at it other than to open it to see if I can find any mods. None that I saw unfortunately... I'll mess with it some more this weekend and see if I can get it up and running. Thanks!

  14. Ok guys... I'm only posting this here because I found this little doo-dad in my box of 8-Bit odds and ends. I don't know what it is or what it does. Can anyone recognize this and let me know what its function is?

The text on the plug identifies it as a Phantom, but I've never heard of this. It has a 25pin female plug on one end, and a 5-pin DIN female w/ 2 female RCA plugs on the other.

Any help would be appreciated. I think this was given to me in a batch of Atari hardware about 10 years ago.

  16. Actually my 8-Bit stuff got put on the back-burner for a while, but hopefully as Winter draws near, I'll have some more time to work with it.

What could be more important than my 8-Bit? Well, my wife and I recently welcomed our newborn son on August 6th and we spent the months prior making room. It's been a great summer... =)

  17. Well, got the boxes unpacked. Some really cool stuff in here!!! He was heavy into programming, so there are many different programming languages. I looked up some of the software on Atarimania and there are quite a few listed as rareity 7 and up. There is "The Pill" software by CSS as well as the Super Pill cartridge for backing up carts to disk, Monkey Wrench II XL cart, the full OSS language set with toolbox disks, 1050 with US Doubler and Super Archiver II, another 1050 with US Doubler, 3 Indus GT drives, a XF551 which, I think, has the CSS XF Update and much more. As far as computers, there are 4 800XL's and 1 600XL. There is more software than can be gone through in 1 evening but I did get all boxed or commercial software seperated from the homemade disks.

    Atarimania,

There is a large amount of the software in the collection you are missing either the media image/dump or you do not have listed at all. I will get you a list of what's here.

I have to go down to Long Beach this weekend to get the 3rd of 3 collections but will get some pics posted after I get back.

Wow! Talk about a treasure... this is like finding the long lost shipwreck after months of searching! I just wish this gentleman could have lived in Kansas... =)

Seriously though... you have a bunch of gems there and I am so happy to see them in the hands of a true collector. I cannot wait to see what kind of software you have in that stockpile. Congratulations again and we are still anxious to see what you ended up with. =)
