  1. Well, yes and no... I have two SIO cables. One is about 24" long and the other is about 6" long. When either 1050 is hooked to the 24" long cable, they work fine. When it goes: Drive 2 -> 6" cable -> Drive 1 -> 24" cable -> 800XL, then neither drive works. I've not tested the Indus or either 1050 with just the shorter cable yet, but I will and see what happens.
  2. Here's my temporary setup while my office is undergoing remodeling. Stock 800XL w/ stock 1050 and US Doubler 1050 connected to a P4 WinTel machine running APE for XP and a ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon video card which allows me to use Television or Composite-In signals.
  3. Oh... I never thought about using it as Drive 2... I'll give that a shot and see if it works. Although I have 2 1050s and when I hook the both up together, neither works even though their drive select switches are correctly set... but that's another problem... =)
  4. Oh sorry... guess I should have mentioned... it does this with known good bootable disks... Even formatted a fresh one with my stock 1050 and put DOS/DUP.SYS on the disk using the DOS Write DOS files command.
  5. I have an Indus GT drive that is not currently functioning. I put power to it and it powers up fine and the display reads 00. I put a disk in and I can hear the drive head and motor moving and then the display reads 39 which I assume is 39 sectors on the disk. When I boot my 800XL, the machine accesses the floppy for about 10 seconds and then I get a boot error and the display reads GS (or something to that effect... I've attached photos. Also, upon opening the drive, I find there is a connection on the left hand side that is not connected to anything and I wonder if that has come loose from somewhere... and then there's a connection on the right side of the unit that looks like it should have a ribbon cable attached. Can anyone identify what these are for and where they should go? Again, photos attached. Any help anyone can give would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
  6. Well... for some reason, I kept thinking that the USD was just a single chip upgrade... I only have the 2 1050's and then a dead IndusGT (still trying to figure out why that one won't work). I think I'll just stick with my current setup and see if I can't get the Indus working properly again. It powers up, but won't read any discs... I may just go in and give it a good cleaning.
  7. I know, $30 seems cheap enough... but when I'm trying to keep food in the pantry and the electricity on, I cannot afford to spend even $1 on computer upgrades... I have an EPROM burner and several EPROM chips running around, so I was looking for a "free" way of doing this. Heck, I don't even have internet at home right now... I have to use my PC from work or my friend's house.
  8. I have 2 1050 drives, one is stock and the other has a US Doubler installed. Using an EPROM burner, is it possible to copy the USDoubler chip and have one in my other 1050? If so, what chip size would I need to use to do this? I don't know the availability of USDoublers and honestly, I can't really afford a Happy board... although I'd love to get two of them for my setup... *sigh* Any info would be helpful... thanks!
  9. Back on topic... Ten Fifty, Ten Ten, Eight Ten... I don't think you'd call a 1200XL as a 1 2 0 0 XL would you?
  10. You could also search for an Epson SMD-300 or 340 on Ebay... that is a direct replacement for the ST's drive. You still have to flip the floppy cable, but that's it. Also, make sure the drive is jumpered for ID0 and not ID1.
  11. I believe you can just take the old chips out and put the new chips in and you're done. Just make sure your chips are oriented correctly and that you have HI and LO in the right spots and you should be good to go.
  12. For the XTra-Ram ST, yes... standard 30 pin PC simms will work, 80ns if I recall is preferred. I don't think you can use 4MB simms though, only 1MB. I also don't remember if you need parity simms or non-parity... sorry.
  13. The VME Graphics cards allowed your MegaSTE to be used on standard VGA/SVGA monitors in higher resolutions such as 1024x768. As for games using it, I'm not that familiar with that aspect of the graphics cards. They were mainly used by desktop publishers, graphics designers, musicians... anyone who wanted higher res graphics than the ST line could provide from the factory... My thought would be that you are correct... most games would not take advantage of the higher res's, but I think it would still allow you to play whatever game you wanted since the card could be scaled down to whatever resolution you wanted.
  14. From what I remember, the FPU won't make any difference in games or your basic applications. The only real place that you'll see a difference is in anything that does rendering or 3D Modelling. For instance, Phoenix took great advantage of the FPU, but most other programs did not. It's a cheap upgrade to say you have one, but that's about it. One of the biggest pimps you could do to your STe would be the addition of a VME Graphics card. Finding one however is near impossible.
  15. I played mule for a very long time when I was younger, and it's still one of the best games ever made in my opinion... what can I help with?
  16. Resistors are resistors are resistors... The colored banding around them will tell what ohm resistance they are and they should be easily replaceable... List the color bands on them and I'll see if I can figure out what they are... or better yet, take a close up photo and post it.
  17. Wow! That was quick! Yes, indeed, an SX-212 (Which was a blazing fast upgrade from my old 300 baud) and an XEP-80 which I could hardly read the text on when I looked at them on my TV. The 1050 had a switch on it for bypassing the write-protect sensor inside. I hated notching discs to use the back of them, so I built in a manual write-protect. And I think I only destroyed one game by accidently writing to it... hehe... The 800 only had a simple modification to it and that was to turn the fixed TV cable in the back to a plug so I could easily move the computer from one tv to the other.
  18. I was looking through a box of photos of my son when he was just a year old, and came across these... Notice what's above him? He's now 18 years old. And can anyone tell me what the two boxes are on the left side? I'll give you kudos if you're right... =)
  19. Hey Green... any idea when she'll be back online? What happened?
  20. My question is, Why haven't you done it already?!?!? And if you don't want it, let me know the guy's address... =)
  21. I agree with Mitch... they look like Asset Tags... Perhaps before the days of nearly non-removable stickers, they actually branded the equipment with tag numbers to track them. I've seen it before on older gear...
  22. Agreed... Restore is the command you're looking for.
