  1. Did you get the box with it? The arcade machine always had some cool art. :P

Don't get me wrong, I love the 5200 as well. I have two and one of them is modified.

But.....it drops in my addictive\favorite list because back in the day Atari re-released the same old arcade ports for the 5200 that they had on their 2600 and computers.

I mean, by the time the 5200 came out, I was really tired of Galaxian, Centipede, Asteroids, Pac-Man etc. so I naturally wanted Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and all the other arcade games

that were snatched up and done on the CV. Especially Cosmic Avenger and Mr. Do. :D

I had a lot of fun and still do with the CV. I just wish I can keep the original controllers working. :x

exactly! I dont know what the 5200 freaks are talking about when they say the 5200 is better than the coleco. the atari didnt have a great library like the coleco.

  2. coleco was great. I used to call thier 1-800 # all the time and ask them to send me booklets, and they would for FREE! I had booklets of games I never had. it came in handy because I would pick up games in the wild over the years and not need to match them with a booklet since I had already gathered every booklet coleco ever made.

  3. You know, I actually like them for what they are. On every other system, I use a standard joypad, even on the ZX Spectrum. With the Coleco, I have resisted the temptation to use a 7800 pad and have stuck with the original controllers. They are obviously harder on the hands, but it's a change from the norm, and when I play Frogger or Pacman, for example, I feel like I'm really playing it. Pacman in particular feels a lot better with the stick than with a joypad or the Atari standard controller. The stick doesn't take diagonals too easily, but I still think it's undervalued overall, and certainly not as bad as what I'm hearing passes for the 5200 controller. And the Intellivision is just a complete disaster.

So does anyone else use the Coleco controller rather than an Atari one, or is just me that plays Galaxian with the old stick?

Oh and another thing - does the Coleco stick work in an Atari 2600?

yes, the coleco stick works on the atari. i love the coleco joystick over any other ones. I just wish you were able to play games that you could only use with the SA controllers like frontline.

  4. To the disappointment of some and glee of others, I am kind of busy today, so not a lot of free time for AtariAge...

I disagree. The 8-bit Atari was a fine game machine years before the Colecovision, and years after Coleco died. From 1982 to 1985, some of the best games on the Atari XL/XE came out. I mean, Donkey Kong wasn't even released until 1983, although I'd expect you to say the excellent A8 version is inferior to the Coleco 3-screen version.

Do you mean that "Donkey Kong with cavities" version in 5 colors? Do you realize that in 83 DK for the Famicom was released in Japan. Now that's a very close port. I will concede that the CV version isn't that great either (but at least Mario is recognizable). Now calling the A800 version the best DK ever is too much a stretch... Actually the best version is in the works, to make companion to the best versions of Space Invaders (I and II), Pac-Man and Ms Pac-Man available on classic systems. :P

About AtariAge, as far as I know it is open to the whole classic community.

Indeed, it is. However, when fanboys of competing systems repeatedly come to diss Ataris on Atariage, it's about as brilliant as racists going to the NAACP site and dissing on the clientele there. One must ask the underlying questions: "Why?" and "What do you expect?"

How rude of me.... Even though this thread is titled 5200 vs. ColecoVision, I am supposed to come here just to concede that the 5200 is indeed better, because after all this is an Atari forum.... Atari fanboys are such crybabies… Atari800 better than C64. Sure, we know very well who is right here, there are hundreds of games out there to prove that…

About racism, better ask your friend atarian63, aka “if it isn’t in the US, it isn’t relevant”….

And atariksi, I am still waiting for the games with 23 colors/scanline….

Seriously, I had a great time here, even with all the Atari fanboys. I love all of you guys, we are all in the same boat, trying to do the best impression of our long dead machines. I think we have done a pretty fine job... :D

Atarian63 points out that the US market at the time was the worlds largest game market. Don't understand your fixation on inventing racism.

How saying that is somehow "racist" makes no sense. Seems like you have a few issues to work out. Try the P&R forum.

The US was the largest market at the time. The topic is 5200 vs colecovision.

I am certainly in the Atariski camp on this issue.

its certainly not racist. its patriotic! :D

  5. didnt coleco beat atari to the punch when releasing thier first system? I think so!

I think you self-contradicted your "best friend" who was claiming Atari is outdated since A5200 is essentially Atari 400 from 1979.

no, I was speaking in general. coleco bought out the first system in 76. atari was a year later.

Um, no. The Telstar Arcade (which I presume is what you're thinking of) was released in 1978, about a year after the 2600.

ok, Im wrong and youre wrong. telestar arcade was released in 77. I had one, I still have the games.

  7. Well, since we have entered the world of personal opinion, I can say that 160 pixels horizontally isn’t and hasn't been "high res" since the 70s after Space Invaders came out...

Another observation on the world of personal opinion: Coleco fanboys are just as adamant as Commodore fanboys, when it comes to invading ATARIage to diss on Ataris. Amazing that the opposite doesn't happen. Is there no "Coleco Age?" (Why not? No large following like Atari? Why??) Do Atari users not care about Coleco? Both? Speculation?

we dont "invade", some of us were here long before other fanboy atari fans have.

  8. This is what I like about this forum. It is the year 2009 and we are still arguing about which early 1980s video game system is the best :).

Really though, I have both and I don't think I have really noticed any huge differences between the two.

Coleco had better games. why wouldnt you like it? and coleco has much more.

  9. stich, next time you see any clobber/gear like that, just call the charity shop/store collectors (if they exist in the states) and they can come and clean out professionally, that way you won't get slagged off for doing anything and you are still recycling (or putting the clobber/gear to good use)

those are even worse. those charity services are a scam. it was on the news a while ago that these charity services dont give to the poor in our community. they actually send if to third world countries and re-sell it there. the charities that you actually drop them off at (good will) are the legitimate ones. the ones that come to your home are not.

  10. Enough of the insults I don't care what you are. Not everyone will agree that it's all good.

I think its wrong to put labels on people, that's all. Some of us might get offended.

I am half latino and half italian. :) so, as long as I stick with the italian and latino insults, Im good!

which brings up a little story from this weekends garage sale runs....

i was by my house and stopped at a garage sale. a car pulled up with a spanish family. I was walking by the garage sale's owner and her yappity friend and she says to her "look....more spanish people. they always come to garage sales and buy everything!" I could have said something but I was in a rush!

how is it an insult? we do grab everything. i have spanish people working for me and when I take things from homes we work at (items home owners no longer want because they are upgrading thier home....light fixtures, ac units, sheving) and they make fun of me. they call me the "garbage collector."

in my town, spanish people drive around garage sales and buy everything. its not an insult, its a fact.

  11. someone taking something from your lawn is not considered an exuse to take the 12 gauge out and act like dirty hairy. believe it or not, we are a bit more civilized here.

Lol I'm the one worried about getting shot, not the other way around. I'm not stupid enough to leave anything valuable on my front lawn anyways. :) If I saw somebody on my front lawn I'd probably just open the door and be like "hey what's up man? can I help you with anything" because more than likely it's a gas meter reader, post man, etc. I only posted that because trespassing is wrong, and in many cases is legally punishable(or worse). And contrary to your post, you guys up in New York are not any more civilized than people in Cleveland, Ohio, Akron, Ohio, etc. In fact, around here if this happened, more than likely we collect up the stuff and help the guy store it until he can pick it up.(mind you I don't live in the city, but still) So who are the more civilized group of people?

And he did not say it was on the curb, he said it was strewn across the front lawn. Thus my point remains: curb is fair game, lawn is not.

true, if it was across the lawn it might have been a bit different but if others were there, it kind of lets people know what its all about. I have had things stolen from my front lawn and things have even been damaged and I get pissed beyond belief! sometimes there isnt enough room on the sidewalk to put everything and stuff was just being tossed on the grass only to be placed at the curb later?

  13. Guys, I grew up with Ken (Cartridge Stealer) and he's not lying. We all had Atari and Coleco systems back then and all we did was swap games and systems around. So relax everyone, he's not BSing you. He has a MASSIVE Coleco collection and I've been bugging him to sell me his mint 5200 for years. I had CV back in the day too, but I also had an Atari computer and I generally preferred the Atari 5200 system, though it was a very close call. Coleco had some very good games that were not available on the Atari and vice versa. I also have a new-in-box Atari 5200 and Coleco Adam now, but the point is, growing up in NY during the cold winters, this is what we did as kids.

I still have it MIOB like the day I showed you in front of the house a few years ago. I still remember the reaction you had. Im glad you were able to score one later on. greg and I grew up with video games in our blood. hell, my screen name comes from what Greg and I used to do together as kids. remember our favorite game, spy hunter? wed play that for hours!

  14. Just wanted to add - castle doctrine is not what's being discussed here. I only brought it up to prove a point - which is that not only is taking somebody's stuff off of their front lawn wrong, but in many places you could get arrested, or worse(such as being shot).

In new york, one cannot get shot UNLESS the intruder is in the home and he has a weapon and you have no other way out and you are cornered THEN AND ONLY THEN can you use deadly force.

  15. woa-woa-woa!

    wtf people?

I commend him for finding the stash. just a little info for those of you that dont know long island law, when a person gets evicted and they dont claim thier items on the day of the eviction, or prior, the items are to be placed at the curbside FOR ANYONE TO TAKE. It is meant for garabage pick up THUS anyone is allowed to take garbage. we had a tenant thrown out of one of our house and all his crap was placed at the curb. we went to craigs list and put up an ad reading "CURB ALERT" and allowed people to come and take what they want or else the stuff gets taken by sanatation. you should see the swarms of people that came to grab the stuff. the latinos grab EVERYTHING!

  16. LOL. Looks like I got under the little fanboy's skin! :rolling: I thought it might take a few posts more for you to go with the real down and dirty insults. The fact that my calling you out on your lie(s) sooner is icing on the cake. You sir, are truly a liar and a credit to your "race".

And yes, I know you're bullshitting. I've seen plenty like you come into these discussions and start hurling the "retard" and "little bus" and such time and time again. The fact that you can't carry on a rational conversation and resort to insulting a system you've never played is awesome. It never gets old.

    Carry on.

bro, you didnt get under my skin. I just cant believe how stupid you really are. But i suppose the site needs simpletons like you to laugh at. good work. keep on carrying on the good fight for your pathetic atari. Im sure it will win one day.

again, I played the 5200 and it sucked. it sucked so bad that atari had to pay me to keep playing it.

Stupid as to not believe your lies? And, I have a lot more than just a 5200. In fact I have most systems released back in the day as well as many of the systems since.

Now I know youre a liar. you couldnt afford any of the systems from back in the day. your dirt poor. I bet you dont even have enough money to by yourself a whore. face it: youre a loser.

  17. LOL. Looks like I got under the little fanboy's skin! :rolling: I thought it might take a few posts more for you to go with the real down and dirty insults. by the way, looks like your the real fanboy. 8000 posts on this site? to my mere 400 plus? like I said, keep on the good fight. :D

  18. do you still have atari posters all over your room? I bet you are wearing a t-shirt right now that says "have you played your atari today?"

Ha ha! I kind of would like some Atari posters for my game room with all the systems. Would also like posters for all the systems, though. Don't know if I could wear the t-shirt without looking like a doofus, though; hard to pull off that look when you're over 35!

Face it, the atari 5200 sucked big donkey kong balls and thats why it didnt succeed. Want proof? Watch the specials on VH1 and the atari 5200 is never mentioned. coleco is. hell, coleco is even mentioned in the family guy. why isnt the 5200? BECAUSE IT SUCKED.

Holy cow! Someone doesn't like the 5200!! I don't have one because I play most of the same games on Atari 800/XL/XE (incl. 5200 conversion) so I don't see the need.

Speaking of Donkey Kong (not necessarily balls, however), it's too bad the Atari 400/800 version wasn't available on the 5200, because I'm pretty sure it's the best version of Donkey Kong on the home systems, pie factory screen, etc). As we all know, Coleco purchased the console rights so Atari couldn't produce a 5200 version, which would have been the same game. Coleco was wise to tie up DK rights, Atari not so to put a turd like Breakout as the pack-in.

I'd take a Colecovision, perhaps one day. Yeah, I thought they were great in the early 80s, and seemed very arcade-like at the time. I'd have to put it in the "not so sure I'd actually play it" department, though - along with the Jaguar. I still want both, to complete my eventual "all the systems hooked up and working" collection. My, this hobby takes seemingly unlimited quantities of space and money. Sure is fun, though.

I really dont hate it but prefer the coleco a million times over it. it sits in my closet right now, collecting dust. I will break it open soon, when my collection room is complete. but It will have to wait because I will have fun with my coleco first.
