  1. On good machines and if the job is done right, it should look like new. I'm not sure what the deal is with the places you took it to, but either their machines up to snuff or someone didn't know what they were doing.

What sucks is that I think that the store that had one that worked REALLY good on CDs just went out of business a few months ago. So now I'm shit out of luck sitting here with this scratched ass Vagrant Story. :<

  2. I've always used the game stop disc fixer and done it by hand- like, actually by hand. With a cotton round. I can't say as I've ever noticed the fine scratches you've got there- but then again, I've never cared much for getting 100% new looking, as long as it's 100% new working.

I also think having them buffed for sale isn't inherently better or nessecary... I remember once losing & bidding on an empty case for a game, only to get a better deal on a CIB copy because the discs were refinished. (Ironically enough, the game was Vagrant Story!)

Do people care if a game is refinished? Don't see why that would lower the value so long as the game is working. *shrugs*

It kind of sucks that we've yet to find a way to actually add the layer back to a disc. This is why I don't generally collect disc games. : /

  3. So before I get to the problem, yes, I did have the game buffed with a professional buffing machine... Twice. I don't know if the people running these stores just don't know what they're doing, or if maybe I'm just being anal. So I got this copy of Vagrant Story. It's meant to be sold as I already have a copy (a few extra dollars never hurts), but I wanted to get it buffed since it was a little rough looking. I went to a small local place and had it buffed. It looked fine after the initial buff, but when I got home I could loads of hair line scratches. They're not deep scratches at all, and the game plays, but again this one is going to be sold. So, a little annoyed I headed to a local Play N Trade, figuring maybe their machine was better. Got it buffed, got home, still has the goddamn scratches. I'll try to post a pic to give you a little more detail.

Does anyone know how to get these tiny scratches off? I'm just trying to give the game that new look again. I really don't want to try buffing again, because as you all know you can only do that so many times before the game is permanently damaged.

Help me Atari Age, you're my only hope!

  4. I decided to ask here since I haven't been able to find out anywhere else. What engine is this game using? Right now I'm feeling like it's using the 3D World engine but expanded. In some aspects it looks like a UE4 game, kind of like the new Kingdom Hearts but with lower res textures.

It's kind of weird, but I like it. You can tell on the city level and forest level that the game engine wasn't built for realism. The Mexico style world looks amazing, though. It's like a weird step in between last gen and current gen.

Looks great though, I cannot wait. icon_eek.gif

  5. This looks pretty cool. I like the 2 cart slots.

I don't trust this, as it doesn't seem to have a ventilation area on the top... Which would be bad...

  6. I suspect that Nintendo won't be against a lot of mobile games coming to the system, though I'm betting they'll filter out a lot of the bad stuff.

I'm still not sure where I fall on this system. I really want it to do well because I'm a big fan of Nintendo. And I do think it will do a LOT better than the Wii U simply because this system will have the full support of ALL of Nintendo's internal development. Not having to develop for a handheld AND a console is a pretty big boon for them. I hope Nintendo can at least get some third parties on board. There's potential for a console that's mobile. I hope it's powerful enough to get reasonable ports of many third party games.

Another thing I wonder about is if this system will be iterative. Will we see a Switch V2 in the future with better hardware? Then maybe a Switch V3 a few years later with even better hardware? Mobile tech is advancing at an insane pace, so if they find success with this platform I see no reason for them to not upgrade it every few years.

  7. FYI, DS:Extraction will be $24.99 at TRU for Black Friday.

I think the problem is that it's another rail shooter. I remember when it was announced that the Wii was getting a Dead Space game everyone was pretty hyped (accept for a few people who only like HD games). Then, not long after, once it was announced that it was a rail shooter, there was a huge shit storm. People are tired of half assed efforts, and want real games. Also keep in mind that EA tried to sell this game at $50 with no advertising.

Considering Resident Evil 4 did 1.5 million on the Wii, I'd be willing to bet that if Dead Space Extraction was a third person game like the original, it would have done a LOT better. I know I'd have bought it.

  8. Am I the only one that thinks the motion controls work great? At least during the normal circuits. I haven't done the title defense matches yet.

Fucking great game, definately worth a buy! Especially if you love the original.

  9. I think EA is just a company that grew to big to fast. Probably has a lot of baggage. I mean look at Nintendo, they aren't being hurt to badly by this recession. They've been in business for over 100 years, and have only 3500 employees.

How many does EA have again?

The biggest problems in the industry is that the cost of making games has gotten to high, and these companies are to big to manage properly. It seems most corporations haven't prepared for the worst, either.

Hopefully after the recession they think this over a bit better.

  10. I think it's pretty silly to say that Nintendo has turned it's back on the hardcore gamer. They just released a new Zelda, a new Mario, a new Smash Bros, a new Metroid and a few other titles. Miyamoto has already said that the next Zelda, Mario, and Pikmin are in the works. The thing is, these more casual games like Wii Sports Resort, etc, take less man power and time to make, thus, you'll probably see them more often. Trust me, the big titles are in the works, but they take a longer time to make. You might see some stuff before TGS, though.

While the hardcore gamer side of me wishes they had HD and what not, I can see why they didn't go that route. If you look at the industry now, games on the HD consoles are expensive to make. And I don't meat just a little more expensive than last generation, but a lot more expensive. Smaller companies would have a hard time surviving in the HD landscape, and most would probably be bought up by bigger companies (has already happened to some extent). And as we know, less competition is a shitty thing. I think Nintendo hopes that in the long run, the Wii will be a safe platform to make games, and even give companies enough financial breathing room to try new ideas.

Unfortunately, a lot of companies are abusing the Wii with shitty casual titles. It's not so bad that they're casual, it's just that they're shitty ones. But here and there, you're seeing new and interesting games pop up on the Wii. Fragile, Little King Story, Mushroom Men, etc, are new games that are coming up. This bodes well for the future of the Wii, and hopefully more hardcore stuff is released in the future.

But, it's good that Nintendo is trying to pull in a new audience. I think these new gamers are more the arcade style gamers (like high score stuff, not story based games). You never know, some may evolve into gamers that like more complex stuff in the future. I think that's part of Nintendo's aim, hence Mario Kart coming with it's wheel.

  11. It looks to me like Wii games aren't selling because they aren't there.

First, companies are being slow to port over the latest installment of franchise games. There's no Wii port of Tony Hawk's Project 8, no Wii port of the new Rainbow Six, no GTA IV, no Call of Duty 4, no NCAA Football 08,

Second, companies are releasing big blockbuster new games on the PS3 and Xbox360 but not on the Wii - see Assassin's Creed, Rock Band.

how do you want these games on the Wii, you want crappy ports? The system simply cannot handle the games. So you either dumb down all versions of the game or you do ps3/360 only or Wii only. The PS3 and 360 are, in my opinion, to the point now that if a game looks like a ps2 game it could hurt the sales, it's expected for the Wii games to look like crap so nobody cares.

I can tell you, I don't want a dumb down version of a game on my 360. There's a level of quality that I expect from it, compared to the Wii. Not to say that some games are still not fun without flashy graphics, but for games like COD4, GOW 2, Halo 3, GTA IV, and any other over hyped or hyped up game, you expect it to be top notch, not sub par quality so it can be ported to less fortunate systems.

I had expected them to at least be of the same quality of last generation's games, or better. Most Wii games aren't even that, and the system is much more capable than sub-PS2 looking games.

Platinum Games seems to have the best idea. They're making two franchises, one for the Wii, one for the PS360. No one can really complain. And both games look like they'll be awesome.

That's how companies should be doing it imo.

  12. Like someone said before, unless you're a gamer that reads a lot of stuff on the net about not so mainstream games, you wouldn't have known about this title. Add to this the kiddy art style, etc, then you have a problem. The gameplay was there, the appeal was not.

There is a core fanbase there. They bought RE4, REUC, Metroid, NMH, etc. But right now they're being starved for more core games. I went to Toys R' Us today and couldn't believe the amount of shovelware available.

Fortunately, it just takes one game to change all of that. I believe NSMB did that for the DS, but I don't know what will do that for the Wii. The Wii obviously isn't going anywhere, nor is it going to slow down, so it's only a matter of time.

  13. How this hasn't been posted on a website full of classic gamers is beyond me. :P

I just bought it. It's sort of like what Pac-Man CE did for Pac-Man, accept maybe better overall. If you asked me its like they took the core of Space Invaders, took the stange changing and utter chaos of Pac-Man CE, and mixed it with a bit of Rez for the final game.

    It's awesome, and I <3 it.

    Only $19.99, on DS/PSP.
