    Hi Roy-

Could you post a screen shot? Any "static" visible?  I've used RF from my tv satellite system, and that picture is pretty darned good. I just never thought about trying RF from the ECXL. I'm really curious about that converter. Probably something very similar is available elsewhere, since Radio Shack is out of business (afaik).

    Edit:

Here are a couple of photos from my systems: TOP is S-Video    Bottom is HDMI.  My S-Video is close to as good, but doesn't quite have the sharpness of HDMI.

  2. Fiddling with the ECXL and my monitor video settings, I can now get the sharpest, clearest video I have ever seen on an Atari.  Setting the Scanlines to 0 made a huge difference in the picture quality.  With "0", there are no scanlines visible -- just clean background and text.  And with HDMI, I get sound without a separate speaker as a bonus (one less cable to connect). Of course this was hdmi; I still want/need S-video.

  3. Issue #2 -- Video

I really need for S-video to work. So my first attempt was to use a HDMI to S-Video converter.  Doesn't work from the ECXL. I get a black screen with flashes and streaks flying through it.

I think I'm dead in the water on this one unless Mark and Panos come up with an adapter. This adapter works great from my Roku, but not from ECXL.  Has anyone found a converter that works with ECXL?

Usb to PS2 adaptors tend not to be active. So it must be a keyboard that supports both protocols.

It flashes the keyboard LEDs for a split second, then gives up.  I may have that other type shown above around here, so I'll look for it. Otherwise... Amazon.

  5. One step forward, two steps back.

My keyboard PS2 to USB keyboard adapter doesn't work.  It didn't work at all with the ECXL and won't even work with a PC.  Gives a "device not recognized" Windows error.  Tried two different keyboards -- both fail.  StarTech -- their stuff usually works great.  Too bad, I have a nice mini PS2 keyboard that would have been great. Time for plan B -- new one from Amazon.

I ordered this one off Amazon $29.99. Velocifer USB TKL78 and the ATARI non-transparent key overlays. Not a fan of the mini chicklet style keyboards.

    (snip...)

Yes, I saw that model, too and saved it to my wish list.  I'm in the same boat -- need to take up as little desk real estate as possible and still be able to type comfortably.

  7. Nice looking keyboard!  I've found several that I like on Amazon, and pretty sure I saw your model there, too.

So to make sure I understand, you have to press and hold FN while pressing F1-F12?

I think that I've been looking for something that isn't in the ECXL -- namely the Ultimate 1MB menu.  I've concluded that what is there is a work-alike.  4 Profiles (i.e. 4 OS?), and the memory models selection from 64K to 1MB.

    Lots to learn about this!

    ONN wireless keyboard.

Works well?  I see only one at Amazon.

Related question -- how do you use the Atari function keys? F5-F8?

I haven't been able to get the Ultimate menu screen up, yet (which uses HELP at boot or Help + Reset, IIRC.)

  9. Note: I know this looks weird, but it happened when trying to remove the Altirra keyboard map info.

    Issue: Keyboards?

At this time, we can't use an Atari keyboard, so we must rely on PC parts which come in a myriad of shapes and sizes. My initial attempt was a Logitech K520 wireless with a "pairable" receiver (a really nice keyboard). 2.4 GHz, I think. As best I can determine, it only partially works with the receiver plugged into either USB port on the EclaireXL (ECXL from here on). I'm presuming that the key map follows the Altirra "standard." (?)

Altirra (PC) key equivalents (from the Altirra HELP file)

---> (Removed, since incorrect and caused some confusion.) <---

If you have a wireless keyboard, does it work well?  Do the function key equivalents work OK?  Any other issues? From the pictures I've looked at here, most folks have wired keyboards. Any issues with those? I'm buying a cheap wired keyboard today + have a PS2 to USB adapter arriving today, so that I can try a couple of older PS2 keyboards that I have here. (I even have an old IBM 9910 "click" keyboard!)

If I'm just pressing the wrong keys that would be really easy to fix, but I suspect that is not the case.

Feel free to post pictures, especially if you have found a keyboard that you really like!

EDIT: Through experimentation, found that F9 and F10 are Warm Start and Cold Start, respectively. F11 brings up the EclaireXL settings menu. F12 brings up a Devices menu.

EDIT-2: Found some really useful info here including the all-important keyboard map:

  10. This is a thread for discussing (and hopefully solving) general user issues with the EclaireXL.  It is not a thread for discussing 3D printing of cases.  Hopefully it will allow new users (like me) to get things working to our satisfaction sooner!

I’m in the USA for a few weeks, does anyone have any pbi devices they could sell me please? I have only a syscheck II and a turbo freezer. It’d be great to have a couple more to test with.

    Hi Mark-

After thinking a bit, I have a Rev E IDE+2 that works, but won't retain its menu settings when it is powered off.  To be clear, if you power it from a separate PS, it keeps the settings fine (or if you leave it powered from the Atari, it keeps its settings, also).  I'll give it to you.  Let me know where in the US to send it.  PM me.

  12. I'll work some more on these issues tomorrow, but the IDE+2 definitely won't power up.  I think Nir confirmed that it works on his, but don't think he mentioned how his is powered.  Yes, I have the ecxl and the PC attached to the same monitor, but on mine, the menu won't come up until I turn the ecxl off.  I'm 99% certain I'll go with an HDMI --> S-Video adapter -- that will solve both the APE issue and the screen resolution/width.

  13. Just hooked mine up for the first time.  I see several things that I'll need to address:

How is the screen resolution set (default -- out of the box?)  I get something that looks quite wide on my 1080P monitor.

Is the printed case pretty well finalized?

What is the best keyboard to use?  That one above in post 229 looks pretty good.  I can use my Win PC keyboard, but the layout is not too handy.  It is wireless, though, and that's neat.  I like the keyboard layout in #229.  Where did the Atari graphics (stickers?) come from?

I presume that the PBI on the EclaireXL is not powered?  So I'll need to use a power adapter for the IDE+2 (which is hooked up, but not functional on my first test).

Presume that 2.4 amps is plenty for the EcXL? I think I read that 1.5a was OK.

APE is currently a bit unhandy to use -- at least on my monitor, I can't get to the menu screen unless the EcXL is powered off.  Got to work on that -- APE is my goto I/O device in addition to the IDE+2.

The HDMI output looks fantastic, although a bit large and chunky on my 23" monitor. Maybe if I get to 480i, things will look a bit better. Or maybe by going back to S-Video with an adapter.  That would also solve the APE issue.

Edit:  has anyone used this device?  This is from Amazon, but this one seems to be pretty common.

  14. Well, the first test of Fast Print did not go too well.  I was printing a list of movie titles using a Basic XE program to list and sort them, and about half way through the list, the screen display started going berzerk.  No issue when using the standard E: display.  Could be lots of things, but seems not too robust.

  15. It may take awhile, but I still intend to find that article that I originally mentioned.  I've got it on "my to-do list!"

BTW, if perchance you are not familiar with John Harris, he was a terrific Atari game programmer in the early days as well as MAE later.  Here is a relatively brief and incomplete description in Wikipedia:

I may be dreaming this, but I seem to remember that he popped up here at AA once or twice. (?)  I met him at the World of Atari show in 1998 at Las Vegas.

  16. One of the best Atari games ever released.  I started with the 2600 version which was also terrific.  Carol Shaw did a great job.  I've never seen the C64 or other versions.  Were they substantially the same graphics -- or were they tweaked, also?
