My very first Atari 800 had an off and on problem with collision detection of objects and missiles. My Atari was mfgd. in late 1981 -- still with OS A roms. Is anyone familiar with this issue? I never read much about it, but I think it was resolved when I replaced the OS roms with rev. B. Wow! We're coming up on 40 years -- scarry!

Thanks for the info and especially including the version written by dmsc! I haven't looked into it yet, but definitely will.
This has become a quest for me to find the screen accelerator article that I think I remember. Does anyone else remember it? My recollection is that it was from a mid-80's issue. I've searched through my Analog PDF files, and so far -- nothing. Maybe a "false memory?" Anyone else remember the article -- maybe in another mag? I did find the "README" docs from John Harris for HyperE, but what I remember was a full-blown article with type-in code, etc.
BTW, I discovered that Adobe Reader DC (free version) can search for text in multiple PDF files in a folder. That's handy! Probably many folks already knew that, but it was new to me, and perhaps might be to a few others, also.

Hyper E: is a screen speed-up utility from (IIRC) Analog magazine. Are there others, perhaps even better? I'm thinking there was at least one other, but don't remember what it was.

Do you use real 720K disks or are you using HD? I've always found that 3.5" 720K disks are probably the most stable (user-written) we have. (In large part due to the data separator in the 1772-02-02 controller.) But if you are using 1.44 disks, they are typically quite unstable. I understand that you want ED, but curious as to why not DD? The losing data issue?

Thanks to you and Nir.

Getting ready to order one... does the PBI work properly with IDE+2? I would presume so, but it is a problem if it does not work correctly.

That's an interesting coincidence. I bought Galactic Chase and the original Jawbreaker cassettes as my first games. I found that my 410 was very unreliable as well as incredibly slow, so replaced it after a couple of months with an 810. I used to drive around 30 miles (one way) a couple times a month to see what the computer shop had new.

What was the conclusion with your machine?
I have bought recently a 600XL with the same symptoms: machine seems working, tests passes, but the two-liner basic program crashes after a few seconds of running.
All chips are socketed inside, and it has a 2764 chip on the top right corner. I know PAL machines are different compared to NTSC but not that much, right?
Yes, it is always nice to have some conclusion to these problems, isn't it. "Closure." BTW -- what is your BASIC program that crashes?

How difficult would it be to add some type of 80-column support for one of the hardware emulators? It could be XEP-80 or something else. And if it were XEP-80 type, it would be very nice if it did not use that awful XEP-80 tall, skinny font and it didn't overscan the screen. Just curious if this is feasible.

Works great. Thanks!

I have a DCM image of MyDos 4.53/4 that seems corrupt. It's odd, because DCM images are generally write-protected, hence I thought that it should be a good, unaltered image. My first clue was when I created and formatted a fresh SD ATR image on APE, it "wrote out" many sectors instead of just writing the VTOC & directory sectors. Many -- probably 100+ sector writes. But when I checked the Disk Directory (A), it showed 708 free sectors and appeared perfectly normal. Then I wrote out the dos files, and it did the same odd behavior, It wrote out way too many sectors for both Dos and Dup.
So, long story short... does anyone have a known good image of 4.53/4? And can anyone offer a thought of what is going on with this DCM image that I have?
Thanks,
Larry

This looks like what I'm wanting.
Bob's bare-bones 7.16Mhz accelerator .
Bob can we get a schematic and the PLD code?
Is this what you called the XL7?
The XL14 is more flexible -- supports hard drives, etc. PAL folks say it is not stable at 14 MHz, but my ntsc system is/was 99% in XL14 mode, 100% in XL7 mode. I think the last cpld version was M? (If you're going to go, go fast or go home!) 🙂

One last flog of the horse... Video 61 sold/sells a cart with TBXL and the compiler in it. I believe it is in a Williams Bank Switch cart, and it works very well. It boots the Dos of your choice, and then presents a menu for TBXL or the Complier. Panos made a small run of ram carts that had a version of TBXL and the compiler and I think Dos 2.5. I have one of those carts and to be honest, I don't remember how it works. It has an "enable" and "Disable" button on it as well as three Dip switches "BATT-WRITE-XEG/SXEG". I searched for info about it, but all I get is "Found 0 Results". (Is anyone else having issues with AtariAge searches?)

Appears they are archived at the Internet Archive.
Volume 3, Number 3 is the issue that I was referring to: https://archive.org/search.php?query=atari classics
Bob's article is on page 34. This is where he discusses technical issues with doing what you suggest.

MyDos 3.07 is the first version of MyDos that I ever had. I don't know/remember what the "T" means. Maybe some slight change to get it to work with TB32Q? The "problem" with 3.07 is that it does not support large disks. However without the HD support, it is quite fast. TB32Q is the work of Tom Hunt. Haven't heard from him in years -- hope he is well.
As an afterthought, since Altirra Extended Basic is designed to go into a Maxflash cart, what would be the point of going to a bunch of work to get TBXL into a flash cart? Yes, it is a challenge -- maybe like "why climb the mountain?" "Because it is there."

Look back through the Atari Classics. Bob Woolley outlined some steps that he tried.

No, it partially worked, but note that it says it freezes. As far as I remember it never really worked correctly. TB32Q is the only version that I recall that was useful. That was 12 years ago... do you have another link that says that I got TBXL working? I thanked him for the code, but that doesn't mean that I was successful. If I did, I sure don't remember it.
If I can figure out how to attach files using the new forum software, I'll post it(an ATR that I must have used). -

Hi Roy-
Presume you mean the 800 (Frost) Basic? Afaik, no one has been successful putting TBXL in an Atarimax cart. It's been several years, but I couldn't get it to work. I did get the Sparta version working with a small version of Mydos (3.07 IIRC).

I was successful in setting up the first of my D devices. The bios flashed to 1.6 without issue. Then I successfully used the APT FDISK to set up my D1: partition. Right now, I'm sector copying the drive data. Passes VTOCFIX.COM, so I think I'm all set. Setting up the other Rev D should be quite easy.
Jon, are there any other docs for FDISK.COM? I.E. a step-by-step of what has to be added to the APT table when setting up the partition. Not saying there should be, just asking if it exists.

I looked back through my correspondence, and evidently it is the RTC chip on the E devices that results in the settings being lost when powered off. I used a 1500 uF cap on mine which worked for a long time, but ultimately that "fix" failed.
-
Ah, yes... I meant bios 1.2.
On my E, I have bios 1.5 or 1.6, so I presume the fix carried through. (?) Simius indicated it is a hardware issue and not fixable except to replace it with an F (or leaving it powered by separate power supply.) Do you have any other info? There was a "fix" that I applied shortly after getting it initially which added or replaced the electrolytic cap near the power jack. That worked for a year or so, then it started losing the settings again. Maybe a "supercap"? 😉

Hi Jon-
I should have added to my post that I use MyDos. My Current bios in both the D devices is 2.0. I actually have an E (so I haven't used the D's in years), but the E has issues with losing its settings when powered off. So I've gone back to the D.
I hate to ask such a basic question, but what file is used to flash the firmware? I downloaded the APT Toolkit for 1.6, but it has only UFLASH on it, which was for the Ult 1 Meg. Even if I load UFLASH, it wants to know if I have an Ultimate or Incognito. So surely UFLASH is not used to flash the IDE+2. In the meantime, I'll keep looking, but if you can point me in the correct (MyDos) direction, I'd certainly be grateful. I keep getting no results when I try to search the forum, so either I'm doing something wrong, or the search function in the new software has issues.(Edit -- I see the bios has .COM file, so I need to use that. Slowly this stuff is coming back to me.)
