those brown console dust covers
Big Player replied to christianscott27's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I have a similar looking dust cover for my 2600 except that it is made of cloth. I got it back in 1982 and I still use it today. I used to have the vinyl dust cover for my 800XL. -
AFAIK Volume 2 sold out. 943384 And AFAIK Volume 2 sold out years ago. I bought Volume 1 from Randy in 2003 and he didn't have 2 then. He may not have had it at all or if he did, not for long.

one TV household gaming
Big Player replied to christianscott27's topic in Classic Console Discussion
We only had two TV's in our house when I was growing up. And like Christian Scott, I grew up in a middle class suburban household. When I would play Atari before dinner time, I would have to turn it off mid-game so my father could watch the six o' clock news. That was the old days when local news was only a half hour during the dinner hour. Now it comes on at 4:30 and they have even less to talk about or repeat the same stories. TV news is a complete waste of time. I own two TV's now. The 32 inch one I use for video games and the 13 inch color I had from college. -
Good, they had me worried there for a second.

Anyone for a round of Cornhole?
Big Player replied to remowilliams's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I want to state for the record that I have always been an East-Sider. It is a fun game. But I only play it about once a year, usually after my fantasy football draft. We didn't play it this year, so I guess it has been over a year. I am really bad at it. Or can you say that you really suck at Cornhole? -
I already own Volume 1 but I would buy Stella at 20 on DVD. On another note, why isn't there going to be a Classic Gaming Expo in 2006? [EDIT: Nevermind, it's all explained here: http://www.cgexpo.com/ ]

I don't know if it actually saved quarters, but I used to get my tokens at a pizza parlor that gave you seven for a dollar. Then I would take the tokens to the arcade around the corner where there was a much larger selection of games. The arcade only gave you five tokens for a dollar, but those pizza parlor tokens worked at the arcade. For some reason, both establishments went out of business in about a year.

I agree with Jaybird3rd. Once Upon Atari is a good doc and any 2600 fan should own it. But Stella at 20 is the best doc on the 2600 and I have only seen Volume 1. I got it from Hozer and Volume 2 was not available. There must be something about Volume 2 that makes it much more popular and thus harder to get than Volume 1. I would love to see both Volumes of Stella at 20 released on DVD.

New ColecoVision demos at PhillyClassic6
Big Player replied to opcode's topic in Homebrew Discussion
I can't wait to get to Philly so I can play these games. Less than two months away. . . -
I own four of the five games you have listed and the only reason I don't own Jammed is that it is not my type of game. I prefer a little more action with my puzzle games. But I'm not sure why you need to ask for opinions on those games. The BIN files are available for download. Just run them on your favorite emulator and see which game you like the best. There are only a few homebrews where the BIN file is not released. And I second what supercat said: Support the 2600 Homebrew programmers!

Good news! The Cinciclassic web page has been updated as well. I guess that counts as an official announcement. That room looks like they will have much more space than they had in 2002. Now they do need to promote the hell out of it, since it's been so long. I'll be there of course.

This thread is so old it actually predates Happy Days, so cut them some slack.

I'm On a Redneck RAMPAGE! and other DOS games..
Big Player replied to BeerGnome's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Love those old DOS games. I bought the Fallout/Fallout 2 pack at Deals for $1 a few months ago. That was back when I was running Win98 on an ancient laptop. Now that I've got a brand new computer (first new one for me since 1995) I need to install Fallout. But I'm not sure if it will work with XP. I can't find out either until I locate the disk drive for my now dead laptop. When I do find it, I guess I'll have to break it open to get my game. I do like Redneck Rampage, but I also have Duke Nuken 3-D sitting arond here somewhere. I've been looking for the disk for at least two years. -
The Crash's Effect on Gamers
Big Player replied to Great Hierophant's topic in Classic Console Discussion
SteveW summed up most everything I would have said, except I had an Atari 800XL. The video game Crash hurt consoles and arcades but was a boon to computer games. I was 14 in 1984 and all my friends moved on to computers. Computer games have a lot more depth and complexity than console games. They also rely more on the player's thinking rather than fast reactions for success at the game. The chance to program your own games was the other thing that drew me to computers back then. I never made a complete game but I did program some graphic demos, redefine character sets and move them around the screen with a joystick. Part of the reason I never completed a game was that my efforts in Atari Basic looked a lot like the first generation 2600 games. Other problem was I didn't have the math background at age 15. If I had stuck with it, by 17 or 18 I would have had enough education but by then, I was tired of computers as well and only used them for word processing in college. -
Does anyone Only play Classic Games?
Big Player replied to thund3r's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I don't play modern games, if you count the three current consoles. The newest game I play is Mario Tennis for the N64. And I've only had an N64 for about a year and a half. I paid $10 for it at a flea market. That's about what I'd pay for the current three consoles. -
Double Dunk for me. My custom title used to be Double Dunk Zen Master. I used to play this game for hours at a time. Now I don't play it because the computer poses no challenge for me. There is an easter egg in Double Dunk. You just need to score 199 points against the computer. Good luck.
-
Double Dunk is much better than any of the Realsports titles. It's even better than Super Football. My vote was Realsports Volleyball. Great job capturing beach volleyball, long before it became popular outside of California. I had Realsports Tennis in the day and I like some aspects it brought to the game. Hitting the fire button for each shot is something sorely missing from Activision's Tennis. The Activision game has a more realistic game with crosscourt shots being much easiler to make. A great hack idea would be to make it so you had to press the button.

Why is this book so expensive?
Big Player replied to TonyA's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
http://www.atariarchives.org/ has the full text of a lot of great Atari 8-bit programming books. De Re Atari Machine Language for Beginners Second Book of Machine Language Atari Graphics and Arcade Game Design -
Great news. I was subscribed to the old list but haven't received a new message since April. I still have never made a post to the list. But it is great to see the beginings of future homebrews.

Next, someone is going to point out the hero looks like a square.

Why is this book so expensive?
Big Player replied to TonyA's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
I have no idea, especially because the entire text is available here: Atari Roots My guess is that so many people wanted the book back in the 80's that they want to have it in their hands now. I know I really wanted it in 1984 but I read in Antic that it was out-of-print and never made an attempt to get it later. I've read the online version and do wish I had had it back when I there was plenty of free time to play around with code. -
Arcade auction in Cincinnati this Sat CANCELED!
Big Player replied to MattG/Snyper2099's topic in Arcade and Pinball
Where is the auction going to be held and at what time? This is the first I've heard of it. -
Either that or else separate out "supply" and "demand". There are probably a fair number of MR carts out there, but the people who have 'em aren't going to put them in their "please give me something for these carts" pile. By contrast, there may not be as many Froggo "Sea Hunt" carts out there but they spend all of their time in the "just take it please" pile. [ 916518 Excellent point. Another game that fits that category is H.E.R.O. It's a 5 as well but difficult to find because it's such a great game. Best one for the system in my opinion.
-
This game has come a long way since I last saw and played it on the Stella mailing list. One of the great things about lurking on the list is watching great homebrews like this one grow from simple beginings. Nice job!

Come on guys. Strawberry Shortcake is by far the easiest. Or so I've heard. Couldn't really get far with her myself.
