Atari released a few 16K 2600 games in 1984. Dig Dug, Crystal Castles and Millipede all had extra RAM too.

Yes, the plastic shells are cleaned and used for homebrews. Everything else (PCB, EPROM, label) is new.

Man, am I the only one who enjoys that game? 859037 I like an occasional game of Home Run. It's the best version of Stickball on the 2600. Now speaking of sports games, where is the love for Double Dunk? It does have a playbook, but you should completly ignore it if you want to do well against the computer and unlock the easter egg.

What If Star Wars was Release in 1977 on the VCS
Big Player replied to Atariboy2600's topic in Atari 2600
The 2600 didn't take off in popularity until 1980 when the Space Invaders cart was released. -
I would kill for a Warlords cocktail.

First banned AA member. Don't ask why, other than it was well deserved

For this discussion, I agree with you. It's a home computer because you could program games for it out of the box while the 2600 required a lot of work to produce the first amatuer programmed games. I like this idea of making a timeline of homebrew games. But what I would really love to read is a history of 2600 homebrewing. I don't think a lot of people even on this forum know how much reverse engineering it took before any game programming could begin.

That's it, thanks. Now I will refer anyone looking for HOM ][ to this thread, though it was a strange two year bump.

That host has been down forever. Got a mirror? Checked at Zophar...but it looks like it was never submitted http://www.zophar.net/utilities/mod.html 852458 Damn, sorry about that. I had downloaded the program from that site a while ago and I checked only to see if the page loaded. My hard drive has crashed and I'd really like to get that program back. I had the zip file on there even. I'd post it if my computer was still alive.

Good to hear from you again, Alex. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Robotron for me. I can't believe it was left off the list.

Try Hack-O-Matic ][ instead. http://www.dacodez.tk/

The exact release date doesn't matter because Atari finished the 2600 in 1976 but waited until 1977 to release it. So it's safe to say that the 2600 design was not influenced by Star Wars. The Vader design wasn't released until 1982 at least, maybe later. Though I don't know this for certain. I'm basing it on that when I got my 2600 for Christmas in 1981, it was a wood grain six-switcher.

Amazing. I hope I can one day purchase this game. Is there any idea what a cart with this type of bankswitching would cost?

What's funny about that ad is that while Wings was never released, there were two other CBS games with extra RAM. Mountain King is a great game too. I own Omega Race but I don't the booster grip controller so I've never been able to play it. Colecovision controllers will also work. I bought a Colecovisino controller at PC4 and before I could try it, my Omega Race cart stopped working. So later on I bought another Omega Race cart and of course the Colecovision controller didn't work. I'm cursed when it comes to that game.

Looks like I'm batting 3 for 4 in the AAS. I had Dark Cavern in my original collection. Okay, so I didn't own Maze Craze, I'm 2 for 4. I picked it up at a drugstore at a crash reduced price for either $5 or $8 in 1984, can't remember which. I got a few other M-Network games at the same store. I played the heck out of this game. Things get really hairy once you reach the gold robots. It's an adapation of the Intellivision game Night Stalker. I have the game in my Intellivsion collection and I think Dark Cavern is the better game. On the Intellivision you have to use the keypad to shoot you gun. Problem is that you can't use the direction disc at the same time you use the keypad. You can get around this by using the keypad on the other controller. You also only get six bullets at a time and can't store them. The gun won't appear before you're out of ammo. In Dark Cavern, you can build up a nice stash of bullets. I'd like to know how they kept the game from flickering. But I'm still waiting on how many possible mazes there are in Maze Craze--if that's even possible to figure out.

I first played Cosmic Commuter on the Activision Action Pack, back in1995. I had never heard of it before either. And after playing it, I thought I could see why. The game was not fun. Once I got into collecting carts a few years later, it was not on my list of wants from Activision. However, on a recent visit to the home of Stan Jr and pitfallaimee, I played Cosmic Communter on a real 2600. Was I surprised! I'm going to have to take back all that the badmouthing I have given this game in this forum. It is a fun game when you play it on the real system. I never saw the cart in the wild, so I don't have to kick myself for passing it up. Because it's a 5 in rarety, it's not suprising I didn't come across it. But I could have been looking for it at least, if I hadn't played it on that crap Action Pack emulation. As Mindfield said, it doesn't rate with the top Activision games. But since the top Activision games are also generally the top games for the system, it's hardly damning criticism. Cosmic Communter is a solid, fun game from the designer of H.E.R.O.

What's the post #? Not everyone uses the same number of posts per page. 846177 Post #169. I'm still getting used to the new forum software. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but I've only been able to get on AA for about 15 minutes every other day.

Since we may have some new people reading this thread, page 7 has the latest ROM of the game. Download it and try it in your emulator (or your Kroko or Cuttle cart) now. You won't regret it.

Pester away! It's been two and a half months with nothing. This game is too great to remain unfinished. It's instantly addictive.

Hey, week 3 and finally a game I'm not familar with. Sounds cool. I'm not sure when I will get a chance to play it though. The only computer currently operating in my household is this pentium 133 laptop I'm using now. It's so slow I have to wait for it to catch up to my typing. Emulating the 2600 is out of the question right now. But since it's a paddle game, I'm sure it doesn't play well in emulation anyway. I need to get one of those Kroko Karts.

I didn't have the option of returning any of my 2600 games. The stores where my parents bought the games had the policy that you could only return opened games if they were defective. I would liked to have returned Video Pinball, though my brother would have vetoed it I'm sure. He loved that game. Come to think of it, I didn't have many games and I don't any of them would have gone back. I subscribed to Electronic Games magazine and did everything I could to find out if a 2600 game was any good before I bought it. Pac-Man was the exception. My father bought for me the day it came out. I learned Atari had released it when he came home from work with the game. It was damn cool. I still played Pac-Man quite a bit and it was one of the few games I got without endlessly begging for it. I wouldn't have taken it back just becuase he bought it as a surprise. (He generally thought that video games were a waste of time and money.)

I think Garry Kitchen should be on the list. His games are Keystone Kapers, Pressure Cooker, Donkey Kong and Space Jockey. It's really a tough call for me though. I would really like to see the results of this poll if it was voted on by only members of the Stella Mailing List. By knowing the how to program the 2600, they would have a better idea of who the best programmers are. Or who got the most out of the system. From what I've read on this site, Pitfall seems to have some amazing programming with the formula that creates the screen layout. Here is an interesting thread old thread on which is the best 4K 2600 game. http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19551

RS Tennis is not an underappreciated game to me. It was one of the games in my original collection. Great game, playing with manual racket is the only way to go (difficulty switch on A.) I also loved being able to put my name up on the scoreboard. So far, I've known about the two games in the AAS 'back in the day'. But both games have been good ones. I'm always looking for a good 2600 game that I somehow missed. Keep 'em coming.

I don't doubt that at all. In fact, I believe Stan Jr had an ntsc Solaris dumped and it turned out to have the pal ROM inside. I just wanted to have vdub_bobby check every possibililty first.
