Your biggest problem is rewriting the game to work via cartridge vs tape. All 3 load mechanisms on the 8bit required different routines (cart, cassette, disk). Turning one into another was difficult though some tape games would covert correctly to disk via some utilities . I know Video 61 has converted a few games to cart but it required some effort to do so.

t.skid - give me your email address. I found the utility called makedisk that can move .st disks to floppies and vice versa (ie, take your real ST disk and make an image usable for PaCIFIST)
I also have a utility for msa->st I can send also.
-
I bought Brataccas and didnt like it. Control was weird and the game very frustrating, IMHO . Time Bandit I found to be awesome though!
-
I used Pacifist when I was convverting a few old games I never got to play on my 1040
You dont need the best, just one that supports floppy disks. Come to think of it, I believe there is a msa->disk converter utility out there? If I can find mine I'll let you know.
-
With some older 1040/520 ST's you had to lift the machine up from the front (under the space bar) and let it drop to reset the chips. Usually didnt have to do it more than once.
-
Its easy but you need a 720K formatted floppy (I dont believe you can use a 1.44 floppy formatted for 720K).
Just Load up your favorite ST emulator and copy the .msa disk to your 720K floppy on your IBM. You can then take it to your ST and play away.
Prob a few minor details Im missing but I did this a few years back.

When you finish the game it gives you a map to the secret landfill where Atari dumped their carts in teh 80's
It just stops.....
As for Ben,
Im in your league - never a perfect game. I know 2 folks who have done it though - Alan Hewston and Robert Mruzcek during a 2600 Decathalon sponsered by Twin Galaxies a few years back.
-
CGE is at the Plaza hotel in Las Vegas off Fremont street (neat light show). Most folks arrive Friday and depart Sunday. I attened thhis year as a Twin Galaxies representative and it was fun. If you're looking to buy stuff or get your hands on some rare stuff that is the place to be. Don Bluth and a few other folk heros were there talking and the 'auction' was pretty fun also.

Hmmmmmmmm, I was under the impression the ST series parallel port doesnt work bi-directional since Atari didnt activate all the pins (Falcon may be different)
Are you sure Ghostlink would work on an ST???
I have a Laplink cable from my PC days, is that the one required for Ghostlink? I'll def give it a try!
-
One more thing Ben. With regard to your 'go left' theory, if you've completed a perfect game losing 2 men what was your 'time left'? Alan Hewston used the 'right' pattern and I believe had over 30 seconds left on the clock (checkout the Twin Galaxies record).
We had a few people play this thing to death and it seemed going right losing no men is the fastest way to win (a few secrets with the tunnels used to gain time).

The instructions I posted came from an email over 2 years ago. I knew there were 2 minor mistakes but couldnt remember them . I also left out some big secrets with regard to getting the perfect score (hints on log placement and other goodies).
These instructions help my beat the 100K mark which is what I wanted. Perfect game can take weeks of play to get!

Forget the map, just follow these instructions for a Perfect game (easier said than done!)
THE PATTERN
The best way to start is to reconfirm the pattern used, for reference purposes...which always heads to the right unless noted...
1st - Start by heading right to the 1st treasure
2nd - next ladder down, then up to 2nd treasure
3rd - head back LEFT, then down and to the right past three (3) scorpions, and up the next ladder
4th - keep heading right until you pick up the 14th treasure...score should be 51,000 if you're at "perfect"
5th - head back LEFT, then down and to the right past seven (7) scorpions, and up the next ladder
6th - keep heading right until you pick up the 25th treasure...score should be 87,000 if you're at "perfect"
7th - continue heading right and take the next ladder down, and head right past one (1) scorpion, then up ladder
8th - continue heading right until you pick up the 30th treasure, with a score of 107,000 if you're at "perfect"
9th - continue heading right and take next ladder down. Go past a few scorpions, head up and to the right until you get the 31st treasure...112K if "perfect"
10th - head LEFT and take next ladder down, then head right past 3 or 4 scorpions and take ladder up. Head right and treasure is less than 3 screens away

Extra details removed for you to find out

I looked long and hard at this for awhile with no real luck . I got an ST Networking interface so I could move stuff between my ST/PC via FTP. Drive sharing isnt supported .
I believe you can get an interface cable for a Zip drive which would give you some kind of interface with your PC. Someone in Germany sells it (where else for cool ST stuff!)

I had an AT-Speed board in my Mega 2. It worked ok. Graphic apps were slow and I believe Hercules mono was supported(and CGA)???
Text apps worked pretty good. I used Work Perfect 5.1 for DOS on it at the time and was happy with it. I also used a Desktop Publisher program but it was slowwwwwwwwwwww
If you ahve text apps you want to run that are 286 compat it will do the trick!
-
Colecovision emulation is pretty good via MESS also.
Took awhile for me to get teh directories setup, but after that things went ok. MESS sometimes has a mind of its own when trying to find those pesky ROM files!

D2K has 2 play modes - run for your life until you get the killer powerup and get the killer powerpup and kill everything in site.
I did just what you mentioned and got pretty far into the game, but also played via Radar and not usiing the screen
Sounda and visuals are great, but eye candy doesnt make the game great.
Note, I never said it was bad, just not a great Jag game.
-
Well, I can pass judgement with no problems of retribution
D2K plays too fast and the sprites too big to make it a truly fun game. Classic and Plus mode are more fun IMHO. 2K mode just isnt balanced enough for a good gamer to develop skills to play the game. Alot of luck in involved. Maybe with a better controller D2K would shine, but in its delivered form is not a classic.
Tempest 2K is great though. Good balance and gameplay.

The soundcard in the 7800 is unfort the same as the one in the 2600 to maintain compatibilty. I believe there are 2 sound voices available (hence the crappy sound on alot of 7800 titles).
Some of the Lucas Arts games put a POKEY chip (Atari 800 sound chip) in the cartidge to get better sound, but this was an expensive add on.
As for sprite info I dont know that, only that the 7800 could generate and manage ALOT of sprites.
-
The Network card is a 'Parallel' adaptor card that connects to the ST's cartidge port. I was getting about 1 mbps during my transfers which was ok for me. The biggest problem I had was the software was designed for TOS 2.x and I only had 1.4 in my Mega 2

Dave Small - what a small world indeed (pun intended).
I bought your products just so I could get your newsletters. They were great as were your products.
I was able to scratch out a B in my tech writing class in college showing the cost benefits of the Atari w/Spectre and AT Speed vs buying seperate Mac and PC Clones for the PC lab - thanks !
Sorry to hear of your trials and tribulations. Good luck on your future endevors and please stop by to write.

Anyone else out there have their ST hooked up to their Windows network?
I got this Parallel Port network card from a guy in Germany that allowed me access to my Mega2 via ftp - finally an easy way to back up my ST hard drive which only starts on every 3rd tuesday on months without a full moon , ie its going bad real fast!
-
Well,
I own BS and it is 'ok'. If you dont have 3 friends with Jags over it really hasn't grabbed my attention.
For collectors value yes Im keeping it , but I wouldnt go head over heels for it just yet.

If you're looking for someone to help get you started with 8bit stuff, check with Holmes:
http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/atari/
Unfort, he had to take his site down to remove some games and hasn't come back up yet (hes very busy), but he put out a CD filled with 8bit stuff awhile back.

5200->Atari 400 with slightly remapped memory locations, different cart sizes to make imcomp with 800 series and crappy joysticks.
800XL provides a small footprint, excellent games(most of 5200 games are ported from 800) and a better joystick interface!
I only play my 5200 during Twin Galaxies compeitions, otherwise it collects dust!
