How soon until we see someone creating a portable from this?

yes it is. I haven't added the caps yet as I didn't feel I needed. Here are some pics from creativision, aquarius, and intvII I modified with the circuit:

I did a different version, here is the pcb I used (less that 1 square inch). Also if you are going off the 12 volts you may need a 5 volt power regulator. You may also want to add a high pass and low pass capacitor across positive and negative to get rid of noise on the screen.
