Atari TT VGA and Jail Bars
FatRakoon replied to pixelmischief's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Wow, fairly recent post... Under a year ago. I too have just recently been playing with my TT, again. I have a nice 14" TFT screen and that is great for the Falcon. I do have a CTPCI and I did have great fun running the Falcon at 1024x768 and above ( Although it was unecessary ) and it does give a fairly "not that bad" display with the TT, but as the OP's screen shot, it does do that, plus it also seems to crush teh characters too! - its as if the characters are crushed so instead of them being in an 8x8 block, they seemed to be in a 6x8 block and so they are distorted... With the standard 8x8 font, its not that bad, but with the 6x6 font thats used for the icons etc, they are almost completely unreadable. I had searched, and I found a brand new, unused CRT Monitor and so I jumped at it. It cost me £90 and it is 19" and so that is far too big for me to be honest, but as it was brand new, I thought I better go for it, but it did NOT cure the display... Not like my old CRT did. I also have a seriously weird LCD screen, that is a true wide screen in that its default resolution, is a rather weird 1280x768 and its a tiny screen, but I can alter the display enough so that it can either plonk the display on the left and give me a massive white blank bit on the right, or I can stretch the display to fill the screen, however, it still does not remove the raggedy character crushing? Shame. I think that the only true solution, would be to have some hardware adapter made up, that could convert the VGA signal of the TT, into a more up to date VGA compatible signal. But does such a device exist? Could it be done? For anyone who might want to know, but a friend of mine got hold of a greyscale ( not monochrome, just greyscale ) and it was VGA and could do 800x600,and he used that on his TT and it had an amazingly crisp display on it. I have no clues as to the model, but even though 8" is a little too small, it really was a lovely screen to use. He only used it for CuBase and you can get away with it like that... Heavy DTP/WP etcwont cut it but with music, you are not staring at the screen are you? I am looking now for a 10" or a 12" screen now. Hell, Im waffling. If anyone reads this and has any advise over what has already been said, then Id love to hear it. -
Ok, something that I have been wanting to do for some time. My TT currently has 2 CDRW Drives, my ST also has one, and yet, to this day, I have never once been able to burn a disk at all!!! Ok, mostly its down to the fact that I dont actually have any burning software, but hey, that should not stop me should it? LOL Anyway, I have tried a few PD programs that say that they do it, but again, I have failed miserably to do this... Does anyone fancy talking me through getting my TT to burn something to CD?

Using Magic 6 & Jinnee 2.5 Tried Thing, its nice its fairly powerful, but its pathetic when compared to Jinnee. You might be able to get hold of EASE which was the fore-runner to Jinnee and thats still a hell of a serious option. To be fait however, Both Jinnee and Ease can get memory hungry, especialyl if like me, you like to have a billion icons installed ( Ok, slight exageration ) so 4MB STE is an absolute minimum I would recommend with these while THING isnt as much. Those are my choices anyway 1 - Jinnee 2 - Ease ( v3.2 was better than v4 I thought although I can remember if v3 handled LFN's? ) 3 - Thing

What upgrades have you done to the regular ST?

I wished I had a digital Camera a few years ago, but my mods were very special to me My MEGAST4 Was housed in a PC AT Case, which kept the original case mint condition, I used a PC KEYS adapter for a PC keyboard and Mouse, ( I currently use a QWERTYX on my TT ), the cartridge port was adapted slightly so its vertical instead of horizontal, because I used a ... Erm... Stereo Replay cartridge that was routed to the back of the PC case, also the Serial port and Midi ports were also modded to give more Midi Outs, for CuBase, I had a PC Mod kit giving me a Rugby Clock, that like the Power Clock, allows me to set the time every boot, but to the Rugby clock ( I wish I still had it because it should go nicely in the TT now but there you go ), and as it was in a PC AT Case, it allowed me to have my 2 HDs as well as a ZIP100 and a CD and CDRW although I never was able to write any disks, and even to this day, I have never managed it, even though my TT now has a pair of 32x CDRW Drives in it, but there you go! My STE Basic 520STE, upped with lots of Cash. Ended up with a Pak68/3 & 16MB and while the STE itself is still mostly in its original box, the top half is almost 3 inches higher with the space made up from Aluminum... Doesnot look god, but runs a dream. My TT Annoyingly I am now back on stock graphics, however, its running a 48MHz CaTTamaran, so its quick as stink. Internal HD is a SCSI-IDE adapter, connected to an IDE-Compact Flash adapter, which, is, in turn holding a 256MB Compact Flash card, whic his my C: Drive. Externally, its got a 4.3GB and a pair of 1GB Drives, also a pair of CDRW Drives and one CDROM, and finally a ZIP100, so lots of storage spac, but lets be honest, even with the stupidly massive ammounts of software I have on my Atari, they are not even half full!!! I no longer have the MegaST, I swapped it for Magic 5 and Jinnee some time ago, but I will try to sort out some pics of the TT and STE. -
I have it still I think? 4.11 I am sure it was. Email [email protected] and I will reply with what you are after I hope.

I have had my TT for some years now, I have not used it for a couple of years but I have been using it a lot recently cos I just bought a new 4GB HD for it to use instead of the multiple 270+850+1GB+1.2GB + ZIP + 2xCD, so it should save in some effort. I got a Falcon a short while back... Maybe 3 years, and I expected so much more after all the hype, but compared to the TT it was a pathetic dog that needed to be put down. I sold off the Falcon but to this day, I can help but feel that I made a mistake, because of many reasons. Either way anyway, I love the TT. Ok, as for the Mouse questions, I myself use the QWERTYX that I got from Cris Crosskey at ASP... This does both the Mouse and the Keyboard, and its been a dream device that I used on my Mega first, then the TT, I also got it playing with the Falcon too. I think it was £30 or £35 or thereabouts anyway. I also used to have a Graphics card for the TT... An AlbertTT card actually... What a total pile of junk.... I was hoping for lots of colours, but all it gave me was 800x600 or 1024x768 in the bog-standard 16 colours... Ideally I wanted 800x600 in at least 256... the Falcon has 640x480x256 and thats ok, but its so slow, its absolutely useless... I would rather do without, and in fact the ST in Mono runs faster than a Falcon in 256 colours. anyway, as I said previously I have just got back into my TT but the 270MB Drive ( C: ) is corrupted and I am tryign to put my setup back to how I remembered it, but its not looking too good, with most of my floppies also being knackered too, I am looking at a massively cut down setup unless I can source some replacement copies. Later all.
