What do you send to Nintendo? A dead Wii? You mean they keep track of the games you purchase and if your Wii 100% dies like say 3 years from now, I can ship them the bad console and they will just ship me a new Wii with 100% restored data on it? Amazing. I didn't hear about this policy. Can you direct me to the text explaining how this works. That is a good deal.

This isn't what Zoop said but it does seem to indicate you can redownload VC games you bought if you have to get your console repaired. It's from the Wii FAQ:

    Missing previously-downloaded games

If you have downloaded a game to your Wii console, but have since deleted it or otherwise lost it, you can redownload it:

    1. Access the Wii Shop Channel (how to).

    2. Select "Start Shopping" and choose "Virtual Console."

    3. Browse through the available titles to find the game you need to re-download.

    4. Select "download" to download the game again.

As long as you are using the same Wii console you used to originally download the game, you will be able to re-download it should the game be lost or deleted.

    Also from their repair section:

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT STORED INFORMATION ON YOUR Wii CONSOLE:

Nintendo will make every effort to keep any saved data on your Wii console intact. However, due to the nature of the problem you are experiencing, this may not be possible. In cases where saved data cannot be restored (e.g., game save data, emails, addresses in your Address Book, etc.), your Wii Shop points and previously downloaded games will still be available to you. To gain access to your Wii Shop account once your system has been returned, you will need to enter the Wii Shop and re-download your games at no cost.

That is really good to know and sounds like a pretty good system.

It won't stop me from keeping my older systems though, as a self-confessed hardwareophile I could not bear to part with the "real things".

  2. The Lynx is tougher, bigger and Atari - what more could you want?

If you like Arcade ports and, in my opinion, a system that is easier on the eye, go for the Lynx, if you like Sonic and the sega beat-em-ups, go for the GG. Personally I prefer the Lynx II.

Heck, get both, they complement each other in a collection very nicely :D

I have not seen a Turbo Express go for anything near sane prices in Oz and don't have a TG16, so maybe it's time I checked out the US eBay and had a look if it is worthwhile.

  3. From today's Age (a major Oz daily newspaper):

    Wii breaks Xbox sales record

The Nintendo Wii is the fastest-selling games console in Australian history, snatching the title from Microsoft's Xbox 360.

In the first four days since its launch last Thursday, 32,901 Wii units were sold nationwide, said Daniel Morse, games analyst at GfK.

This compared with the previous record of 30,421 Xbox 360s sold in the four days after its launch in March, he said.

Australian electronics retailers are enamoured of the Wii's initial success. Neil Merola, business manager for Myer's electronics division, described the result as "outstanding".

"When you compare it to [Xbox] 360, we would have sold four times the number of Wii than 360 at launch. So the uptake has just been sensational," he said.

Mr Merola attributes the Wii's success to its broad appeal as a "family-oriented game". He predicts the Wii will "clearly" defeat the Xbox 360 in Christmas sales at Myer stores.

"The core demographic for us is female and families ... so the Wii uptake has been fantastic for us," he said. "We will sell whatever stock Nintendo can ship to us."

Brad Harker, director of stores at EB Games, said sales were "sensational", but wouldn't make a prediction on which would be the better seller this Christmas.

"They're both selling extremely well. I can't say that one is eating the other's market at all; I think the market is growing larger as a result of this," Mr Harker said.

Perhaps expecting today's announcement that Nintendo had seized its record, Microsoft yesterday issued a statement claiming it had just recorded its highest grossing week of console hardware sales in Australia since the Xbox 360's launch.

"Figures from GfK ... show that around $2.6 million worth of Xbox 360 consoles were sold in the week ending 13 December," reads the statement.

But Microsoft's announcement was hardly unexpected, given sales always pick up in the lead-up to Christmas, and this will be the first Christmas since the Xbox 360 went on sale.

Nintendo spokesman Vispi Bhopti rubbished Microsoft's $2.6 million figure, noting "Wii sold (in 4 days) just a smidgin under $13 million worth of hardware (and that's not including accessories or software)".

Although the Wii's price tag is markedly cheaper than that of the Xbox 360 - $399.95 compared with around $650, respectively - Nintendo makes a profit on every Wii sold, while Microsoft makes a loss.

As a result, Microsoft is relying on strong games sales to turn a profit. Microsoft says that for every Xbox 360 console sold, 4.8 games are also sold, which it says is "around twice the attach rate of any console in history at this stage of the life cycle".

It is too early to determine a comparative figure for the Wii, but GfK figures show initial Wii games sales to be high.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess title for Wii was the best selling game last week, despite only going on sale on Thursday.

But Nintendo's sales success could be affected by an impending lawsuit - Interlink is taking Nintendo to court over patent infringement relating to the Wii remote.

Nintendo is yet to make an official comment on the case.

  4. I have found post from Canada and then the US takes the longest to get to Oz, if at all and often in less than good condition. I have also had stuff arrive from the States 4-6 months after shipment, usually well after the replacement item has arrived (thank you Amazon for always sending replacements without fail or fuss).

Royal Mail on the other hand I have never had a problem with, and often receive items on the Friday if they leave the UK that Monday and I live in a rural area.

Most services from Europe seem pretty good.

Now Australia Post - 1 1/2 weeks Blue Mountains to Mount Gambier?!?!?

  5. So I gather from this that a PAL 2600 plays NTSC games with no issues with the colour?

BTW, surface shipping from the states is taking between 10-12 weeks at the moment (air mail is bloody expensive but "only" takes 2-3 weeks) so you will plenty of time to settle into your new house if you were to buy now.

There is only one "r" in Australia.

  6. There are heaps of FB1's for sale in Oz at bargain basement prices, and they all have a pretty thick layer of dust on them. Perhaps that is why we did not get a PAL FB2.

I'm in the "it does not matter what the internals are as long as the games are the real thing and not lousy emulated or re-made versions ala FB1" school.

It would be pretty cool to have a new Atari console that plays old games perfectly and has the grunt for new, advanced homebrew or even commercial games, just like the Wii.

I'm just impressed with the ability to have three questions on the one poll.

  7. We will be buying a Wii but probably not until February when we will have the time to play with it and there may be some post-Xmas bundled specials going in the stores.

I should change my vote as there we were on Saturday, going through the junk mail, escaping from the 41.5 degrees (centigrade) heat and She Who Must Be Obeyed sees a Wii bundle on special at Target and decides that would be a great way to spend the day when it is too hot to do anything else.

Who am I to disagree with a Domestic Directive such as that?

Problem is they were out of stock already so we had to get a raincheck and it will arrive next week.

So we will be getting a Wii this year after all.
