First let me say that I will be getting a Wii early in the New Year, now let me ask: If you do not have your Wii connected (are we talking ADSL or wireless) and cannot take advantage of it's downloading capabilities, what, apart from the controller, is the big advantage over the GC? I live in a rural area so unless all of the Wii's features are available via some form of land-line connection does that mean I'll miss out on games sunch as those from Hudson and Sega?

An end to your retro gaming passion ?
AussieAtari replied to PINMAN's topic in Classic Console Discussion
40 years old, 25 years of gaming and only playing more, not less. My greatest fear is reduction in reflexes as I go over 80 Mind you, I recall years ago an article stating that PacMan was good for keeping old people's reflexes sharp. My 76 yo mum still plays Lady Bug and her only issue is the aching joints in her hands caused by too much gaming in the late 70's with un-ergonomic controllers! True quote from my house around 1984 - "What's for tea mum?" "I don't know but I got (insert ridiculously high score here) on Video Vermin today" I'm proud to be a gamer and collector at my age. -
Your philosophy on beating games...
AussieAtari replied to tcv's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I'm right with you, Flomojo. Most games I play simply to satisfy a 3 minute gaming urge and match my attention span, although PC games I'll play right through (the Max Paynes, Medal Of Honours of this world) and I am now determined to get through to the end of any DS games I play. Considering I am struggling through Bomberman DS at the moment things don't bide too well for me to finish anything before I shuffle off this mortal coil. -
What happens to the Ataris after we die.

Try this, I have a copy and it is BRILLIANT. They claim it is the full version: http://www.madman.com.au/actions/catalogue...amp;method=view -
Well, should I? Is it a really good portable emulation device and a fun bit of technology?

It depends on who goes first, She Who Must Be Obeyed or me, if it's the former then my son will get my all of my collections (LPs, CDs, Books, DVDs, Guitars, Model Trains, Computers and consoles and all associated accessories, peripherals etc). If it's the latter then I'd say a garage sale or junked would be the most likely outcome. In this age of short attention spans, I find that my kids really like playing Atari as you can just fire it up and play without having to really apply yourself to learning the game. Now that is almost sadder than the thread topic! -
I am just curious here, I am a huge DS fan but the PSP is the bigger seller here in Oz, how much bigger than the PSP is the DS in the States?

Feedback on potential Intellivision Cuttle Cart 3
AussieAtari replied to cschell's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Hopefully I am still down for one as I registered my interest directly onto your site - it looks like a great product. Whose A/V mod did you use, did you install it yourself and what is the result? I am going to buy one of Oliver's as per his post from the weekend. -
Oh I don't know, I personally think Apple 5.25" and 3.5" disks are cool.
-
Woohooo!! Thanks for the link Skunkwork, I am going to drive She Who Must Be Obeyed nuts with a compilation of SIDS! She cannot understand why on earth anyone would be interested in music from games, but then she also thinks records of train sounds and CD's of Ducatis going around race tracks are wierd - go figure!

All of this talk about aracade cabinets, my raw jealousy of you with your own cabs and after working out the final price to build a MAME cabinet from scratch is leading me to think that sourcing a working Jamma cabinet and installing a MAME PC might be the better way to go. It's time for me to start saving and looking for a 1942, Gyruss or Galaxian cabinet I think.

New TI cartridges would be uber cool!!!! Running on the base system with speech module would be excellent as not all of us have fully expanded TI's.
-
Now all we need is the TI99/4A CF-adaptor to be available commercially (other than eBay) and we'll be back in TI heaven.
-
Excellent news indeed! I'm with JB for speech capability.

In your opinion, what are the best Sega Master System games that use the Light Phaser? I'm finding that visitors to the Cave are enjoying light gun games regardless of the format or age and they seem to provide a great retro gaming "fix" for those who are simply not that good with joystick games or not familiar with games in general. Therefore I want to expand my light gun game collection and as I have a few SMS consoles I reckon I'll leave one set up for gun games all of the time. Your opinions are most welcome.

Using a Commodore 64 to teach kids
AussieAtari replied to jbanes's topic in Commodore 8-bit Computers
I'm not a programmer/coder but am an advanced Excel user and support the theory that exposure to someting simple like BASIC provides a very good grounding for writing Excel macros and formulas. When I went back to uni 10 years ago to do my Business degree I found that the BASIC courses I did at high school in the late 70's helped me go streets ahead of the kids straight out of school who really did not know any of the logic principles required to write complex but "clean" macros. -
Yep, same here. I easily spend more time reading about the games on-line, trading, and sourcing them out, than actually playing them. I find the social aspect of the hobby as much fun as the game themselves. Maybe this is the natural progress of things in a "collecting type" hobby after some time ? Ditto for me, although I am pleased to say that our DS's are being used pretty much every day at the moment and we took a week off last week, went away and played heaps of Mario Kart using all 3 DS's which was GREAT fun and a great family activity. All up every day, probably 1/2 hour Atari Age, 3/4 hour gaming and 1/2 hour mucking around with my collection in the Cave.

Hong Kong 148-in-1 and 110-in-one carts for my GBA SP, both work fine and are loaded with NES and arcade games. A few Colecovision NTSC carts that came with the Roller Controller and Super Action Controllers. Various Dreamcast games. A few DS games for the US market that I picked up in Asia before they were released in Oz. Will be adding a NTSC Jaguar and a 5200 with games over the next few months from the US as I simply cannot find them over here and have run out of patience

Absolutely bloody brilliant!!
-
Is the TICF adaptor still available? If so, where can I get one?
-
The AtariMax Coleco 128-in-1 is an excellent unit and a perfect first choice for you, in my humble opinion. I agree with what you say about emulation being given credit, as if it were not at the state it is today, I would not be able to experience some of the rarer/NTSC only/too bloody expensive units that I can through the likes of MESS etc.
-
So, instead of "blind tastings" you would have "blind playing" as it were.... nice concept. The INTV Cuttle Cart project is still simmering away and expressions of interest are welcomed on the home site to encourage completion. For me, with my love of tinkering, I enjoy the hardware almost as much as the gaming side and can often be found just standing in my "cave" (as my wife calls it) looking at my collection, sort of like a Scrooge McDuck wallowing in money thing - maybe I need help?!?
-
The TI-CF adapter has a lot of promise as a disk drive (and furthermore PEbox) 'substitute' I'll be looking into this rather neat item, and I'll post here when I get some results. It is still however only dealing with floppies, and not the stuff that a normal command module needs (GROM/RAM/GRAM, etc). So no loading modules directly to it. Now that is a piece of kit that gets me very excited (sad, I know)! Is it available anywhere other than on eBay? It just looks to be a lot of fun mucking around with. From all of the responses so far, it looks as though a Flash Cart would be the only way to modules, that or find every module I want in the "wild". It is just so much easier getting one flash cart by the wife rather than boxes of carts!
