What are some of your favorite lesser known MAME games?!
AussieAtari replied to yuppicide's topic in Arcade and Pinball
Mappy and I'm Sorry. -
Very cool, well funny and tragic really, I just don't think the trouble and strife would permit such a politically correct, environmentally aware cabinet in the lounge
-
On the weekend my wife says how she would like a sit down MAME table, just like the Frogger and Galaxian tables of old, she even said where she would like it to go, in the lounge room no less - you could have knocked me over with a feather! Well, this is a golden opportunity for yours truly and one I cannot miss, so I am after any directions to plans for a good sit-down MAME table. There is almost too much information on MAME cabinets on the web and I only have limited surfing time as I can only surf when at work, so am after my learned forum colleagues to help me sort the good from the bad. Can anyone assist?

Pong, so simple, so much fun and it started it all.

Utopia is probably the name of the "DC import disc thingy". The VGA adaptor is a very good thing, great clear picture.
-
Ah, I was about to go crazy with a "great games for the DC" list as there are heaps but AtariJr beat me to it - although he did not mention any of the Shenmue series which are great. I use the Madcatz gun with HOTD2 and it works okay. I am on the hunt for the DC arcade stick as that is my preferred method of playing and then would also complete the collection of sega sticks (Saturn and Mega Drive).

The BEST 8 Bit Gaming Computer
AussieAtari replied to pocketmego's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Spectrum for the unique games such as Dizzy, Head Over Heels and Skool Daze, I love isometric games and the Speccy had heaps. I also love my C64's and Apple II's and probably use them more but the "character" of the Spectrum compels me to help it out in this poll. -
The Grundig is cool, but not the unit I thought but very nice all the same though and I bet it sounds great.
-
As SteveW said; you've just got to post pictures now. My ex-mother in law had a great mint condition Grundig unit about the same vintage as yours, exclusively to play Elvis and 60's LPs on. It sounded great and there really is not anything better to listen to the cricket on than a valve radio. Hers was dark brown exterior with blonde veneer trims. US$100 is about what they go for here in Oz fully working.

Had to go for Pitfall! as I don't have Pitfall II for the 2600 as yet so can't compare. Is there anyway I can try Hunchy II as I only have PAL units, is the ROM available for Stella?
-
Envious of the Grundig, is it the really nice blonde timber unit?
-
Does anyone know where I can lay my hands on a power adaptor for an Apple IIc, apart from eBay? Also, do the adaptors take 110V - 240V or will I have to get a specific adaptor for 240V? Cheers.

An entire room of our house filled up entirely with your old black plastic! Dusty junk with peeling stickers from a smelly basement somewhere! Now you have more toys than the other kids, except you're a 34 year old man! Somedays I wish she'd find something, anything, to collect just so I'd have a counter argument. Ah yes, my wife "suffers" from the dreaded Imelda Marcos Syndrome but bringing that up at a time when my collection (now spilling out from one room into another) is being questioned is like throwing petrol onto an already lit fire! Her argument is that I am so busy I'll never get past simply moving all those dusty boxes around; I usually counter that with the "part of the hobby is the sorting, cleaning and general appreciation of the stuff" and "They're for my retirement". I'm keeping her happy at the moment by building her a library in which to store her rather large collection of soppy, pulp "girlie" novels that she buys by the kilogram and never throws out., but she simply cannot see the parallel with those and my gaming/computer stuff. I agree with Shadow460, an opinion from a female forum member would be interesting to hear.

I would buy this if my wife wouldn't freak

I'll be trying that suggestion out as she is under the illusion that I am going to sell all of the apple horde I recently acquired. In reality 2/3 is destined to the rubbish and the remaining 1/3 will be lovely, perfect systems made up by cannibalising the others. I'll post if it all goes pear shaped. -

Now that is disappointing but thanks for the heads up. In case you missed it on another thread, here is a great example of what you can do when you don't have a wife's reactions to worry about: http://computermuseum.bigpondhosting.com/ This guy lives in a converted railway carriage next to the huge shed he houses his collection in. I've said it before and I'll say it again - lucky bastard! -
Whatever happened to Shark? I used to have that, Callus and Sparcade with full ROM sets which worked way better than MAME but lost it all in the great hard drive crash of 2000.

Maybe Nova's on holiday???? I've just bought myself a Vectrex and am fast heading towards single life again the way my wife is reacting to my latest harsware spree. She has made me promise not to buy any more computers, did not say anything about the games consoles so that si my "out" - for now anyway The Vectrex is great, now I'm after a copy of Berzerk for it as I reckon that would be fantastic on the Vectrex. -
Thanks for the recommendation Curt, I've been looking at one of those guns for a while, they are actually cheaper to buy in Oz than have shipped direct from Act Labs so I have just now placed my order locally. Can't wait for that "Real arcade" House of the Dead experience

I am looking to buy a light gun to use with MAME, can anyone recommend a USB gun that works with XP and a CRT monitor as well as a CRT TV (PAL 50Hz)? This will be used with my desktop until I finish my cabinet and then I would like to use it in that, hence the need to support a monitor and a TV.
-
I keep and sometimes use them as I have some (along with ROMS) that have games still not supported in MAME or very well in MESS. Overall, I am using emulators less and less apart from MAME and use the actual hardware and carts due to the fact they "feel" better and there are no speed, sound or other issues.

Chocolate mousse - filet mignon never made me have to choose between fitting in more beer or more mousse

Yep, I think you are making sense, my Ultimate Fighting Controller feels very "Square" in it's movements. What about the actual arcade cabinet sticks you buy for MAME cabinets? If they are not "square" I know that, at least here in Oz, the distributers of those sticks often sell desktop controller units using the arcade cabinet controls. Maybe that would be the answer.

This is making me feel old, most of my newer stuff is from the 80's. A young guitar pupil of mine asked me what all of those thin, round things were in the shelves along a wall, I had to go on to explain all about LPs! Hail to all you guys with 8-tracks, I'd love one but that would really tip my wife over the edge. I treasure my 1978 woodgrain TV with similar vintage 6-switch woody 2600 sitting on top of it, my shrine to late '70s video game greatness. I gave my 18-month old a rotary dial phone to play with just the other week, he loves it and hopefully this will be the start of a love of all things analogue for him.

I'm a Ballblazer fan.

Slighty off the thread, but I purchased an "Ultimate Fighting Controller" in Hong Kong last month for less than $20, it has an arcade quality "bat" handle joystick, 10 buttons, plus a Start and Select button, analogue/digital switch, Turbo and Slow buttons. The build quality seems to be excellent and it works great with MAME and will be even better once I have figured out how to configure the buttons to take over the functions of the keyboard. The unit was designed for PS2 but comes with a USB adaptor for the PC. I would recommend it as a cheap alternative to the X-arcade stick.
