  1. I should clarify, games are still being released for the Game Cube, it's only the hardware that is being phased out - Twilight Princess is available here.

Oh, and we can import games (and consoles, DVDs, CDs etc for that matter) from anywhere as grey imports. There are quite a few shops / auction sites across Australia doing so. If you import the items yourself the goods are duty and tax free as long as the shipment value is less than AUD$300.

Censorship here is a bit weird, all games are classified the same as our movies so we get the most violent games but there is an overriding "social" censorship where we see games that contain gameplay relating to grafitti banned. Nothing sells a game faster here than if it has a "R" rating (equivilent to the USA "X" rating).

  2. Ouch! It's not too bad down here, as a country of "early adopters" we often get new technology out of Japan before anyone else as companies use our market for testing. So from a hardware point of view it's not too bad as long as you are not a Nintendo fan as Australia is a big MS and Sony market. We have access to everything but it can be hard to find.

Mind you, we can legally mod our consoles to overcome region coding.

Figgler, which Zelda are you referring to?

  3. No, the backlight is not an LED. I wish there was a replacement available as I have a Lynx 2 with a dead backlight, it failed whilst I was playing it, luckily I have another unit to use. If anyone knows where you can get replacement backlights I would love to know.

The backlight seems to have a pretty good life though as I have not heard (or read) of many failing.

  4. Here’s my list, in no particular order, this was easier than I thought it would be and in fact keeping it to 50 was the hardest thing. It sparked memories that has resulted in me searching through disks to find some of the older games and give them a run:

  8. Okay, I'm not too hot on electrical conversions, but I reckon 1200Ma is equal to 1.2 amps in which case that adaptor should be okay.

There have been other posts on the Lynx forum on this topic including pretty much the same question posted by myself when I bought my first Lynx. It would be worth checking them out for a definitive answer.

  9. How about a fully configured 5200/7800 unit with a "greatest hits" package of in-built games (could use Atari Age forum to help decide which games rather than Atari ending up giving us something useless like those in the FB1) with 2 external cartridge ports to actually acknowledge and embrace the retro community and the fact that a lot of people still have carts. Also, with 5200 and 7800 joysticks and paddles.

It would cost a bit more but would then be the retro hardware equivalent of the Revolution.

How cool would it be to replicate the original pack in games of the 2600, 5200 & 7800 as the FB3 pack ins!

  10. I agree that it sounds like Nintendo is actually considering what the gaming community really want.

It wil be interesting to see how the Revolution goes in Australia which is really a Sony 1st, X-Box 2nd and Nintendo a very distant 3rd market.

360 is here now and doing okay (pretty expensive which has watered down a lot of the hype) and with PS3 not due until November (PS1 & PS2 are the biggest selling consoles of all time in Oz), Nintendo would do quite well if the Revolution arrived mid-year.

  11. Curt, will there be any chance of a PAL FB3 if the project comes to fruition? We missed out on the FB2 and I'm sure there is a sizeable market for PAL FB3 units in Australia and the UK.

I can't help out with the design etc, but float the idea of individuals coughing up monetary support to help "sponsor" development - would that help make the dream a reality?
