  1. Thanks so much for the kind words, Nathan.

I am so glad that you and many others in our community are digging on the book. It means a ton to me! We wanted this to be a book that would satisfy our crowd here, while still appealing to folks who only have a passing familiarity to Atari. Hopefully we succeeded at both.

And I too wish we could have done more with Coin-Op and ID, but those were the limits of time and space, and we pushed the boundaries of page count as it is.

I appreciate all of you and the support and encouragement and help that came my way during the odyssey it took to make this book. :)

This has been a good month for books!

Art of Atari is a big book, and it's absolutely packed! Here's a pic of it next to Super Breakout and the other book I got this month, to give you an idea of the size of it:

And to be fair, the other book is actually two volumes, so it's cheating. ;)

I've been pouring over Art of Atari for the past hour or so, and I just kept thinking the same thing, over and over...

    Wow.

This is a must have for any Atari fan. The amount of work that has gone into this is astonishing.

It's a real treasure trove of Atari art, history and stories, and really shines the light on the people who made all of that incredible artwork happen.

The quality is absolutely first-rate. This is not a hastily assembled, quick-print book. The printing is beautiful, and the design is excellent. The artwork is huge, and presented front-and-center as it should be.

The original, rejected Pac-Man artwork is mind-blowing. The chapter on "Making things the analog way" brought me back to the days of speccing type and cutting amberlith. Ah... those were the days. (Can't say I really miss them though.) There's so much good stuff, it's going to take me weeks to fully get through it all.

Buy this book. Right now. You don't even have to get the Deluxe Edition (but it is oh, so nice).

My only (minor) quibble - I wish the industrial design and coin-op sections were bigger. But maybe a sequel? :D

Anyway, just one thing left to say: thank you, Tim!

    It's awesome.

  3. Thanks! That's cool that the deluxe version is at Target too. Cool stuff.

I have had the regular hardcover on amazon preorder for months. I couldn't really justify amazon's discount on the deluxe. But I just found that Target is selling the Deluxe edition for $61.82+tax. Ships free.

Very excited to get in on the Deluxe. I am very happy with Target's deal.

It will be saved to go under the tree and saved for Dec. (That is gonna be tough!)

Congrats Tim! I think this is gonna be great!

  4. Thanks, BrontyAA.

Much appreciated. Yeah, the only other piece of art in the collection that is purely 2600 was Jim Kelly's VCS illustrations from the original manuals. Not cover art, but super cool original art. You can see them in the top of this image: http://www.gamasutra.com/db_area/images/feature/6271/collection.JPG

Looking forward to your book and hope everyone buys a copy. Fwiw though I think Adams question is about originals and I believe it is just Surround and nothing else in that collection as far as 2600 goes. Im glad those materials found a good home

  5. Very cool. Did anyone ever find out what happened to those file cabinets full of Atari art and other materials that Sotheby's tried to auction in 2007? My recollection is that those were mostly not originals, but I would be curious to know if there was any original art in the trove and what ever happened after it didn't sell.

Also, there was a lot of cool stuff in that collection. I was able to photograph a lot of it, and quite a bit of it will end up in my book, Art of Atari. (Sorry for the shameless plug -- but I did want people to know that there will be a way to view some of that stuff without traveling to Rochester!)

  6.

You are correct. Most the collection consisted of mechanical copies but it did include some original artwork including the Atari 2600 Surround painting by Cliff Spohn.

The other original art pieces included in the Strong collection are:

    -5200 Football

    -Jim Kelly's VCS manual illustrations

-George Opperman's cover for the Super Breakout handheld game that was not released

  7.

I'd like to get excited, but I still can't preorder the Deluxe Edition anywhere in Germany. They do list in on amazon.de, but it's not orderable (https://www.amazon.de/Art-Atari-Robert-V-Conte/dp/1524102113/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1473313889&sr=8-2&keywords=art+of+atari).

Yeah, sorry to say that I don't know where the Deluxe is being sold. I'll try and find out where it is being sold, but it's a limited printing, and I have a gut feeling it might only be in the US.

  8. Getting closer to October. Anyone else getting excited? I know I can't wait. :)

Yes, it's getting closer. I will be speaking and leading a panel at Portland Retro Gaming Expo the weekend of Oct 21-23: http://www.retrogamingexpo.com/panel_descriptions.phpThere should be at least one book signing event that weekend, and I hope to see some of you there. I also will be headlining at least a couple Chicago signings and events, as well as a swing in SF/LA, most likely. I'll get dates and all out there as soon as I know them. Thanks, all!

  9. Thanks Tim. 2600 Galaxian was the one I was unsure of.

Kelly signed the lower right hand corner of the 5200 Galaxian cover and you can't blame him for it. It is a stunning image and a fresh take to the by then redundant theme of "space invaders"

Of course! Yes that's a great piece. Kelly is a good guy and a super talented artist. I'm looking forward to getting my book in all of your hands so everyone can share in the answers we've uncovered on "who did what." I almost wish we could do a live reading together so everyone could experience it at the same time! :)

  10. I was wondering how U.S. buyers can get an sutogrsphed copy Will you be doing a book tour Great to hear you got it done!

We are planning some events and some stops around the country to do signings, etc. Nothing is set in stone yet, but I'll be speaking at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo (http://www.retrogamingexpo.com/) the week the book is released, and we are working on some other things. I'll update you all as soon as things get more solid.

And thanks for the kind words and support too. I appreciate our community here! :)
