Has the deluxe edition's limited edition print been shown anywhere?
Not yet. I didn't get a chance to share a pic of it yet. Will try and do it some time later today after I land in Portland. It looks amazing. For those of you who will be at PRGE, I'll see you there!

Not sure if I missed the post but will you have the deluxe version with you at PRGE?
I think there will be limited quantities of the DE at PRGE sold at the signings I'm doing. I'm not sure how many.

Thanks, Nathan!
I'm very excited for you all to have this in your hands. I believe it will be worth the wait.
Pre-ordered the Deluxe version from Amazon today! Looking forward to this - thanks Tim for all of the work that went into putting this book together!
-
Wow that is amazing!
Thanks for helping to make this happen, Nathan! What a gift to the community -- can't wait to dig in deeper to all of this. -
Would love to! That sounds fun.
A lot depends on my publisher, but will see what we can make happen! Thanks, Darrell!
Hope you'll consider the Classic Game Fest, takes place the end of July in Austin. They've been rapidly expanding in size - 25K sq ft in 2015, 45K this year, 70K next year. I took my sister and nephew this year, they had a blast.

Thanks! That's cool that the deluxe version is at Target too. Cool stuff.
I have had the regular hardcover on amazon preorder for months. I couldn't really justify amazon's discount on the deluxe. But I just found that Target is selling the Deluxe edition for $61.82+tax. Ships free.
Very excited to get in on the Deluxe. I am very happy with Target's deal.
It will be saved to go under the tree and saved for Dec. (That is gonna be tough!)
Congrats Tim! I think this is gonna be great!

Thanks, BrontyAA.
Much appreciated. Yeah, the only other piece of art in the collection that is purely 2600 was Jim Kelly's VCS illustrations from the original manuals. Not cover art, but super cool original art. You can see them in the top of this image: http://www.gamasutra.com/db_area/images/feature/6271/collection.JPGLooking forward to your book and hope everyone buys a copy. Fwiw though I think Adams question is about originals and I believe it is just Surround and nothing else in that collection as far as 2600 goes. Im glad those materials found a good home
-
Very cool. Did anyone ever find out what happened to those file cabinets full of Atari art and other materials that Sotheby's tried to auction in 2007? My recollection is that those were mostly not originals, but I would be curious to know if there was any original art in the trove and what ever happened after it didn't sell.
Also, there was a lot of cool stuff in that collection. I was able to photograph a lot of it, and quite a bit of it will end up in my book, Art of Atari. (Sorry for the shameless plug -- but I did want people to know that there will be a way to view some of that stuff without traveling to Rochester!)
-
You mean Atari 800 Football right?
The image of a football busting out of the box.
Yep, sorry. That's what I meant.
-
You are correct. Most the collection consisted of mechanical copies but it did include some original artwork including the Atari 2600 Surround painting by Cliff Spohn.
http://www.museumofplay.org/press/releases/2015/12/2449-strong-acquires-atari-design-materials
The other original art pieces included in the Strong collection are:
-5200 Football
-Jim Kelly's VCS manual illustrations
-George Opperman's cover for the Super Breakout handheld game that was not released
-
Dig these! Michael Mendheim did the Cyberball and Xeno ones. He is actually in the Chicago area near me and also created the original (and current) Mutant League Football games.

I'd like to get excited, but I still can't preorder the Deluxe Edition anywhere in Germany. They do list in on amazon.de, but it's not orderable (https://www.amazon.de/Art-Atari-Robert-V-Conte/dp/1524102113/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1473313889&sr=8-2&keywords=art+of+atari).
Yeah, sorry to say that I don't know where the Deluxe is being sold. I'll try and find out where it is being sold, but it's a limited printing, and I have a gut feeling it might only be in the US.

Getting closer to October. Anyone else getting excited? I know I can't wait.

Yes, it's getting closer. I will be speaking and leading a panel at Portland Retro Gaming Expo the weekend of Oct 21-23: http://www.retrogamingexpo.com/panel_descriptions.phpThere should be at least one book signing event that weekend, and I hope to see some of you there. I also will be headlining at least a couple Chicago signings and events, as well as a swing in SF/LA, most likely. I'll get dates and all out there as soon as I know them. Thanks, all!

Well you could do an unveiling of the the original paintings one at a time during one of the game conventions and stream it live.
Cool idea! Hmmm....
-
I actually know the industrial designer who worked on this 5200 kids controller and still has the prototype. Not sure if it's functional or not. Will try and find out.
-
Thanks Tim. 2600 Galaxian was the one I was unsure of.
Kelly signed the lower right hand corner of the 5200 Galaxian cover and you can't blame him for it. It is a stunning image and a fresh take to the by then redundant theme of "space invaders"
Of course! Yes that's a great piece. Kelly is a good guy and a super talented artist. I'm looking forward to getting my book in all of your hands so everyone can share in the answers we've uncovered on "who did what." I almost wish we could do a live reading together so everyone could experience it at the same time!

Galaxian isn't signed either. What name do you have down for Galaxian?
Galaxian 2600 was drawn by Hiro Kimura, and the 5200 version was by James Kelly.

Thank you! I thought maybe I read about that on one of the sample pages from your book, but I couldn't track the info down.
By the way, I'm buying the deluxe edition for myself and two regular editions as gifts.
Awesome. Thanks! And for what's it's worth, the price on the Deluxe edition on Amazon has dropped quite a bit: https://www.amazon.com/ART-ATARI-Limited-Deluxe-Lapetino/dp/1524102113

Tim, can you tell me who did the box art and instruction manual art for Berzerk on the 2600 VCS?
Yes, it was Hiro Kimura who did both.

Such a cool game!
I'm proud to be working on the cover art, and doubly jazzed that this is all the work of my buddy from way back in college, Nathan.
Awesome work, my friend!-

I was wondering how U.S. buyers can get an sutogrsphed copy Will you be doing a book tour Great to hear you got it done!
We are planning some events and some stops around the country to do signings, etc. Nothing is set in stone yet, but I'll be speaking at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo (http://www.retrogamingexpo.com/) the week the book is released, and we are working on some other things. I'll update you all as soon as things get more solid.
And thanks for the kind words and support too. I appreciate our community here!

Nope you won't get the book that fast. It won't be released until late October. That eBay listing is misleading at best. And it has old info as well so I wouldn't bother -- I promise you won't get it faster than the official 10/25 release date.
-
No pre-order discount, though? Is that normal?
I'm not sure if there will be a discount -- I assume so, but will see if I can find out. Initial pricing on Amazon is sometimes wonky.

Art of Atari - book in progress and need help
in Atari 2600

Thanks so much for the kind words, Nathan.

I am so glad that you and many others in our community are digging on the book. It means a ton to me! We wanted this to be a book that would satisfy our crowd here, while still appealing to folks who only have a passing familiarity to Atari. Hopefully we succeeded at both.
And I too wish we could have done more with Coin-Op and ID, but those were the limits of time and space, and we pushed the boundaries of page count as it is.
I appreciate all of you and the support and encouragement and help that came my way during the odyssey it took to make this book.
