Original Atari 2600 box artwork roll call - Where is it?
lapetino replied to Buyatari's topic in Atari 2600
Thanks, BrontyAA. Much appreciated. Yeah, the only other piece of art in the collection that is purely 2600 was Jim Kelly's VCS illustrations from the original manuals. Not cover art, but super cool original art. You can see them in the top of this image: http://www.gamasutra.com/db_area/images/feature/6271/collection.JPG -
Original Atari 2600 box artwork roll call - Where is it?

Also, there was a lot of cool stuff in that collection. I was able to photograph a lot of it, and quite a bit of it will end up in my book, Art of Atari. (Sorry for the shameless plug -- but I did want people to know that there will be a way to view some of that stuff without traveling to Rochester!) -

Yep, sorry. That's what I meant. -

The other original art pieces included in the Strong collection are: -5200 Football -Jim Kelly's VCS manual illustrations -George Opperman's cover for the Super Breakout handheld game that was not released -
Dig these! Michael Mendheim did the Cyberball and Xeno ones. He is actually in the Chicago area near me and also created the original (and current) Mutant League Football games.

Yeah, sorry to say that I don't know where the Deluxe is being sold. I'll try and find out where it is being sold, but it's a limited printing, and I have a gut feeling it might only be in the US.

Yes, it's getting closer. I will be speaking and leading a panel at Portland Retro Gaming Expo the weekend of Oct 21-23: http://www.retrogamingexpo.com/panel_descriptions.phpThere should be at least one book signing event that weekend, and I hope to see some of you there. I also will be headlining at least a couple Chicago signings and events, as well as a swing in SF/LA, most likely. I'll get dates and all out there as soon as I know them. Thanks, all!

Asteroids 5200 controller: Has it been found?
lapetino replied to Prosystemsearch's topic in Atari 5200
I actually know the industrial designer who worked on this 5200 kids controller and still has the prototype. Not sure if it's functional or not. Will try and find out. -
Of course! Yes that's a great piece. Kelly is a good guy and a super talented artist. I'm looking forward to getting my book in all of your hands so everyone can share in the answers we've uncovered on "who did what." I almost wish we could do a live reading together so everyone could experience it at the same time!

Galaxian 2600 was drawn by Hiro Kimura, and the 5200 version was by James Kelly.

Awesome. Thanks! And for what's it's worth, the price on the Deluxe edition on Amazon has dropped quite a bit: https://www.amazon.com/ART-ATARI-Limited-Deluxe-Lapetino/dp/1524102113
-
Yes, it was Hiro Kimura who did both.

Such a cool game! I'm proud to be working on the cover art, and doubly jazzed that this is all the work of my buddy from way back in college, Nathan. Awesome work, my friend!

We are planning some events and some stops around the country to do signings, etc. Nothing is set in stone yet, but I'll be speaking at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo (http://www.retrogamingexpo.com/) the week the book is released, and we are working on some other things. I'll update you all as soon as things get more solid. And thanks for the kind words and support too. I appreciate our community here!

Nope you won't get the book that fast. It won't be released until late October. That eBay listing is misleading at best. And it has old info as well so I wouldn't bother -- I promise you won't get it faster than the official 10/25 release date.
-
I'm not sure if there will be a discount -- I assume so, but will see if I can find out. Initial pricing on Amazon is sometimes wonky.

Thanks, Dave. And thank you, Nathan. The kind words mean a lot coming from such a talented creative. greg2600, it should be. I just checked in with the marketing department about timeline and am waiting to hear back. I'll update you all on this thread as soon as I know. Thanks again to you all!

@ultrasteve, I'm actually not sure. I will try and find out for you. @tremeoloman2006, All the pre-order info for this will be coming out pretty shortly. I believe it could be as early as next week, but it will be soon. Thanks, all!
-
No problem at all, Ballblazer. Thanks for posting it! The DE is going to be pretty fun, so thanks for adding the info here. I'm glad you all are keeping a close watch too. And I can't show it yet -- and at the risk of being a tease -- but the art print I commissioned by Cliff Spohn is amazing. It's going to knock your socks off, and it was such a trip, after nearly 40 years, to have Cliff revisit the Atari artwork and style that got him started. It's going to be super cool and it's just a great image. More soon!

Thanks, all! We successfully met our goal and have shooting in-progress now. We appreciate the support! -
Hey, all. We just put the book to bed, and files sent off to the printer. It's possible you've seen this updated cover, but this one is the final one -- very excited to be bringing this to you all in October! And yes, that's just me on the cover now. The book changed from the early stages, and I am the sole author of the book. It is a privilege to bring my long-gestating vision to life with this great publisher!
