Does anyone know where I might purchase a copy? I seem to recall B & C having it listed but when I went to purchase it they said they had sold out.
Thanks,

The 1.4 2-chip upgrade came in today from B & C! I popped them in and now I have Rainbow TOS! Now I just have to break open my 520STFM and perform the same upgrade. It seems to boot faster or is it just my imagination (or wishful thinking)?

Cool. I never heard of a 1040 having TOS 1.2 in it! I guess it was a short lived upgrade from Atari using custom ROMs. Do you have a blitter installed? You can check from the Options Menu in TOS.
No Blitter...

I'm interested in purchasing an 8-bit cart or file version. Basically I'd buy it in any form you choose to distribute it in.

Not in the US, most I've seen have 1.00 or 1.4 ! I didn't even know 1.2 WORKED in a 1040 until this thread!

What about machines from Canada?? Since Canada uses NTSC I wonder if maybe it originally came from there?

Yep. Looks like you can use 6 chip TOS. You just need to install them in the other sockets and maybe move a jumper or two... You may want to install 28 pin sockets in those other spots though. Apparently your ROMs are 1mbit mash roms from atari. You cannot install Mega STE type ROMs in yours without some hacking. Are you sure you have TOS 1.2 in yours? Run this program to check:
Until the replace drive comes in I really don't have any way of running the utility.

The drive arrived today! Ok, I ran the program and the version is 1.02...

My local Sam's had it for just $8.99! Of course I had to have a copy. It's a nice collection.

Yes TOS 2.6 requires soldering and more to get working. Not worth it IMHO.
The ROMS would either be right under the PS (which is easier access) or at the lower left of board (which requires you remove whole RF shield). I have two 1040's that have different locations for ROMs.
I got a set of TOS 1.4 in 6 chip if interested.
Is this you?

In my case they ended up being at the lower left of the board and with only 2 chips.

There are some games that like earlier TOS versions better than later ones.
If you're into gaming you might as well let those Roms in there.
Else 1.04 is the right way.
If you want to use your ST for serious stuff as well as for gaming you should consider a switchable TOS 2.06 board that lets you use either 1.0x or 2.06.
Thanks for the advice. I take it the 2.06 board is more of a mod and would require a fair amount of sodering?

I guess that means I should go find out if I need 2 or 6 chips and get the 1.04 upgrade?

Check to see what version you have, you might have 1.4! Check about menu, look at date. If you see a Rainbow Fuji you have 1.4.
All it says is TOS. The copyright is 1986, 1987. And lastly, no rainbow, just plain old black

You may simple replace socketed chips if put TOS with same number of chips. But must care for order, because sometimes markings on chips are not same.
In case of 2 instead 6 or vice versus there is need for some soldering, or it can not be done (by older revisions).

Rev. I is first with such pads, earlier boards are all with 6 TOS ROM chip.
You can not use TOS 2.06 without some additional electronic.
I recommend TOS 1.04 - it is latest what you can use in ST without mod.
You can even download and burn it in EPROMS...
Thanks for the info!

Problem is that on most models the controllers aren't removable; 3rd-party controllers would require soldering.

I remember that my cousins had joystick attachments that seemed to do a pretty good job. However, I've found that with a little patience, you can get used to the dial pad thingy before long.
I'm ok with using the INTV controllers it's really more a problem with them breaking down.

Despite the issues with the Intellivision hardware I would certainly purchase one! Speaking of INTV issues, I wish someone would come up with a viable solution for the joysticks. Maybe something like the Redemption 5200 for the INTV? I would if I had the expertise but alas, what little skills I have are limited to software

I puchased an Apple IIc from a guy on Ebay who happens to live in my area. When I met with him to get the IIc he gave me a 1040STF for free! How often does that happen?! Anyway, the machine seems to be in great shape with the exception of the built in drive (which he mentioned). I've purchased a replacement drive from Best Electronics and I'd also like to upgrade the TOS version. Forgive me if my questions are really basic in nature or have been covered elsewhere as I'm pretty green when it comes to the ST. Anyway here goes: I understand that TOS originally came on floppy and later was built into ROM. I also know that it comes as either 2 or 6 ROM chips. I've opened up the 1040 in order to remove the defective drive and was wondering where these chips reside? Also, I assume that they are socketed? Is the upgrade as simple as replacing one set of chips for another? Also, what version of TOS would you recommend? Any info would be most appreciated!
Thanks in advance,

Great!
Can't wait to play it! So has the cartridge entered the production phase then?tjb
No. First I must get caught up with the holiday orders, which I will be mostly done with this week (I shipped out 45 orders today, expect to ship another 50 tomorrow). Next week I am moving out of state, which is why I'm hustling trying to get all these holiday orders done.
As soon as I am unpacked and settled in, my focus will be physical production of Adventure II carts and then shipping the orders as quickly as I can. ..Al
Wow! That's alot. I really appreciate all the hard work you do to make the homebrews happen. So where will you be moving to? Usually when you ship an order to me I get it the very next day since I'm in nearby San Antonio...

Are we close then? Or has this last minute bug thrown a complete spanner in the works??
Gaztee

There's no last minute bug. The game is done. Here is a new demo based on final code to prove it and to keep you busy until you get your copy -- 2 game variations are on this demo, both intermediate difficulty, which is easy enough for BABIES to play.
See what kind of rankings you can get.
Great!

Speaking of Apple, Atari did a port of Gremlins for the Apple II under the Atarisoft label. It looks and plays about the same. IMHO ports from Atarisoft were a mixed bag. Some, like Gremlins was well done while others like Stargate (speaking mainly of the Apple II and PC ports) were no where near as good as the 8-bit/5200 version. I haven't played the Apple version of Defender but I would expect it should be good since Steve Baker wrote it. Anyone played it?

I received my copy yesterday. That was fast! Thanks Brian.

There is modifications I'm going to fix some mistakes as:
- Jerky speed movement in higher levels
- Panel control with enhanced colors
- Add and change more sound effects
But, for now Im going to publish the source code, the same version as ABBUC contest.
First, I want to say thanks to Shawn Jefferson to show me the path to CC65, really after 3 games that I developed, I could to say its a very powerfull C, and have more potential for developer complex games. With graphicians and musicians, it could be done a really great project.
In the same way, thanks to Rybags for answer every of my hundreds questions. I've learn most of the programming tricks of Atari inside. Sure, i won't forget them.
Thanks to Wrathchild for take time to answer my question and fix some problems in my code. Thanks for the free source code of Jellybeans, it show me some ways to do the things. In the same way I release my source code, if anyone have the chance to learn some usefull.
Im not a music, thanks to the people that compose the music for Atari computers, I´ve tried to add in the best way in my code.
Thanks for people who oriented me in some questions, links batchs, memory manager, ....
Happy Christmas to Atarians!
Thanks for sharing. This is the first time I have seen this game. Very nice. I especially like the animation for the man.

Okay, how close are we to this shipping now? Enquiring minds want to know.
This is a copy of the email that I received from Al on December 13th.
Greetings,
You are receiving this update because you previously purchased
Adventure II and I'd like to let you know where the game stands. Ron
Lloyd has made great progress in the last month and the game is
basically complete at this stage. All he's doing is tweaking some
final sounds. With the game complete, we are wrapping up the manual
(which couldn't be finalized until all the gameplay features were
frozen), and those will be professionally printed within the next week.
For everyone who pre-ordered the game, we are going to include some
extras as a way of saying thank you to everyone who's been waiting
patiently for the opportunity to play Adventure II. I'm not going to
reveal what these items are so everyone can be surprised. I don't
want to promise exactly when the game will ship as that's gotten us
in trouble before, but it will be soon.
If there are other games or items from your Adventure II order that
you're still waiting on, I'd be glad to ship them separately so you
can enjoy them now. Additionally, we just launched this year's
holiday sale in the store--if you place a new order, please leave a
comment in your order or let me know directly and I'll include any
outstanding games with your new order. Likewise, if you wish to
cancel your Adventure II order, please let me know and I will take
care of that for you right away.
I apologize for the game taking this long--had we known that
Adventure II would not ship when we initially stated, we never would
have taken pre-orders for the game.
As always, you can read Ron Lloyd's development diary here:

Sincerely,
Albert Yarusso

I received the same e-mail. It's nice to get an update but it would be good to know more specifically what kind of time frame we're talking about. Don't get me wrong I'm not upset or anything. I'd just like to get a ballpark estimate or at least know how close to shipping it really is (i.e. has the final binary been created and now it's just a matter of printing manuals and burning/assembling cartridges). I'm sure it will be well worth the wait.

1040STF TOS ROM upgrade
in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Posted
This may be a dumb question but, what is the advantage to the 6-chip upgrade over just replacing the 2 chips like I did?
