  1. I just had a look at the source code, and it looks like the second button uses PADDL0 register (228 = not fired). This still doesn't conclusively answer whether or not the controller has to be modified to work this way.

I have one at work set aside that I was planning on buying. I'll get it and see if it produces the desired results unmodified. I'm curious about this myself, as I would like to utilize this controller for some games I have planned.

It would be ideal if new games could take advantage of the controller. Did you by chance extract the Action! source file from the .atr file. I've been looking for a utility to do this and have tried a couple with no results.

  2. I liked the 5200 because the controllers have two fire buttons and a keypad. I use one button for fire and the other to engage the shield. The keypad is also used.

The Atari 8-bits have a whole keyboard to use. icon_wink.gif The original Asteroids doesn't use a joystick. It uses 5 buttons.

Optionally, the 8-bit version could be programmed to use a sega gamepad. From what I understand, at least one extra button can be utilized on these controllers.

Good points. Ideally I'd like to allow the user to customize the controls. It might be interesting to play using only the keyboard. When you say Sega gamepad, are you referring to the Genesis gamepad? Does it have to be modified?

  3. No offense, but Rasteroids is REALLY HARD!!!!

icon_question.gif Was this released on the A8 or still a WIP?

Not played it yet but found a traditional looking version on Atarionline.plAsteroids II icon_smile.gif

I initally wrote it on the A8 then ported it to the 5200. Eventually there will be versions for both. I do have it setup for conditionally assembly but I haven't been good about updating the A8-specific code. I liked the 5200 because the controllers have two fire buttons and a keypad. I use one button for fire and the other to engage the shield. The keypad is also used.

  4. I loved Galahad. It was one of the first games I played when I got my first 1050 as a teenager. It's a great game if not a bit frustrating because of the randomness. The author is now a Javascript architect at Yahoo and creator of JSON. A couple of years ago I was looking to become more knowledgeable about Javascript and ran across some presentations given by the author at Yahoo. I thought that was pretty cool.

I've completed the game but basically all the planets have to be in alignment to make it happen. There is a way to kill the "monster moth" but I think it's more a quirk in the program rather than something the author intended.

IIRC there are three areas that require keys but pressing SELECT at the beginning makes these areas open and makes it somewhat easier. Also, I do know that the game is prone to locking up on the XL/XE machines unless you use a translator.

  5. My apologies. I meant no disrespect. I have removed my original post. And FWIW, I have purchased used Jags for roughly the same price they can be had new. When I heard the price posted I did a little research to find out where it came from (obviously not difficult since the number of sources to obtain them new can be counted on one hand) and when I found a lower price I was a bit surprised and posted it. I meant no harm.

  6. Cool! Thanks for the info. I'm afraid I missed your blog/hack. I'll have to pick up a copy once the AA store reopens.

I'm afraid it's only a ROM for emulators at this point unless you have a cuttle cart or something similar. ...or you could burn an EPROM yourself or have someone else do it.

However, if there is enough interest in a cart, maybe we could make it happen. Same goes for the Double Dragon Arcade hack.

I have a Cuttle Cart 2 and a Harmony Cart. One of the two should work. It would still be cool to have an actual cart, however.

  7. I got quite familiar with this game when working on the Tomb Raider hack of it. It does have an end room, then the game goes to a harder level (there are 3 levels). Once you complete level 3, it just keeps repeating the 3rd level over and over for you to play for points. Fortunately, you keep earning lives every 10,000 points. Even though level 3 repeats, I don't think it's too boring. It's still better than many of the "endless games".

Also, I made maps of the game here in my hack post. They aren't the original Montezuma maps, but the only differences are the enemy and item sprites on the map, and the level colors.

    For example:

The Keys are now Scarlet Dragon tablets

The stationary Snakes are now Grinding Spikes

    The Spiders are now Snakes

The Torch is now a Flare

But the skulls remained the same because I couldn't think of anything more fitting for TR.

The first level has both an original color map and a new color map. I could do maps of levels 2 and 3 in original colors if people wanted it, but it sounds like there are other sources for these anyway.
