  1. Life has been nuts, so I had to take a week or so off from Last Strike.  But I finally made it past the first vertical section tonight, and to the second level.  I like it quite a bit more than the first level.  Really nice-looking game, and the variety (trying not to spoil things here) in the second level makes things pretty lively.

I think my repro Pro Controller is busted.  It's been registering inputs that I never made, resulting in some frustrating deaths.  So I tried a stock controller and played much better.  I think the repro feels a bit sluggish in comparison, even without the input problems, so I guess it's time to retire it.

  2. You won't see the boss until you save a certain number of people.  There's a bar at the top left of the screen that measures your progress, and you fill it by saving peeps.  The bar needs to be almost full before the boss loop begins.  So you can fly through the level blowing stuff up and avoiding bullets all day long if you don't save any of the humans.

That's just my take though....I might be wrong.

#2 on the Beebris arcade board! Man, that is a catchy piece of music. I could... and did... listen to that for hours.

Truth.  I've had that tune running through my head for almost a week now.  It's absolutely great, and I'm surprised that so far you're the only other person to mention it here.  It also takes a minute or two or more to repeat, so it doesn't get old so quickly.

  4. So far I rank them like this, with the best at the top:

    Rocketeer

    Beebris

    Downfall

    Kobayashi Maru

    Rocks Off

    HMS Raptor

    Expressway

To be fair, I've put only a few minutes into Expressway, and maybe just a half hour into HMS Raptor.  I haven't bothered reading the manual yet, so there could very well be some gameplay elements to some of the games that I haven't blindly stumbled across yet.

I'm also curious to know what the "And More..." on the rear side of the box refers to.

  5. Wow, this is strange. I fired up my GameDrive last night to play around with the save functions.  My Syndicate save file was working again, exactly as I had left it.  My Rayman save files were all deleted, which was a step in the right direction from the "error" message it had displayed the previous two sessions.  I didn't change anything though...how does something like this fix itself?  So weird, I feel like I lost my mind.

  6. I sat down with Beebris on the Rebooted collection last night.  I think Tetris is one of the greatest games ever made, so having it on one of my favorite consoles is a match made in Heaven.  I'm surprised how much I like the Arcade+ mode - usually I don't like to have a good thing messed with.  But the new features work together really well and the resulting game is still addicting.

The controls are adequate, but sometimes not responsive.  At times I push the button to rotate a tetronimo, and nothing happens.  Other times, I press the button and the piece gets rotated twice.  It's not frequent enough to ruin the game, but it does lead to some frustrating moments.

The music though...it's fantastic.  I don't usually remember a tune after the first time I hear it, but this one popped into my head randomly today, some 18 hours after I played the game, and got stuck there on endless repeat.  I've really fallen in love with that tune.  It takes me back to the early days of the Jaguar, and the only reason I can think of is that the sound is similar to some of the Checkered Flag tunes (probably the only feature of that game that doesn't get ripped apart).

    I disagree...

I've found many items and have unlocked quite a few areas, but have not found a way to access most of those areas. I've been given the hint that there is a room I should have unlocked that I have access too, but I've yet to figure out where the door for it is. I'm told that once I'm in this room, that a lot of other stuff will likely then fall into place so that tells me I might actually be close to the end of the game?

There is one door that opens remotely, that is on the "bottom" or south wall of a room, so you're not able to see that it's open.  Could that be where you're stuck?

  8. I finished Unnamed last night.  I had been stuck at a point early in the game since my first playthrough, but I sent Carl a message and he gave me a slight hint, and that was all I needed to get past that part and finish the game. I really enjoyed it, and now I'm working on New Game +.  There are several doors I wasn't able to open in the regular game, plus at least one item I couldn't get to and one puzzle I couldn't figure out.  So I'm hoping to totally complete New Game +!  But first I have to figure out how to get away from a ghost...

Really cool game!  It's not like anything else on the Lynx, so it fills a good niche.  Most of the puzzles were just right - easy enough to figure out with just a little thinking.

Did you ever find a solution to the Rayman save file error? I've had the same issue with my Jaguar Multicart for years. I have 4 games on my Multicart ( Towers II, Zero 5, Atari Karts, Rayman) and Rayman is the only game of the 4 that gives me issues when attempting to save. I ordered a Jaguar GameDrive so that will be replacing my Multicart, but if I sell or trade away the Multicart, I'd like to fix this issue. There was some code I read about that is supposed to format the Rayman game's save files but I can't seem to find it. Perhaps it will solve the error problem.

Edit: I think I found the code - "hold down * and # and either the pause or option button, all at the same time until you get the "cartridge memory cleared" notice on screen".

I'll try it when I get the chance.

I haven't found a way to fix it, but I haven't tried.  I've been tied up with other projects.  I thought about just deleting the save files from the SD cart and starting over.  Rayman wasn't the only game effected - I believe Syndicate had the same issue.  Those were probably the only two games I had made save files on before adding Jaguar CD games and messing up the save files.

The size of a Lynx production team is a bit limited compared to mainstream titles. It appears that most developers do everything by themselves or download free assets...

Understandable.  It's just that I would imagine it's one thing to have the knowledge/skills to program music electronically, and another thing to have the knowledge/skills to compose catchy tunes.  :)

Didn't see a great place to put this, so here is the latest Chipper song I'm working on for an upcoming game. Experimenting with note timings to give it a bit more of a "live" feel to the song. Enjoy!

Sounds great to me.  It would be among the more complicated (in a good way) tunes I've heard on the Lynx.  We all know you're a talented programmer and game designer.  But I didn't know you were musically inclined!

  12. How is this topic not buzzing with activity now?

Got my shipment (Last Strike, Rebooted, Brawn & Brains, Loopz) in yesterday and I would have dove right in if it wasn't Mother's Day.  Finally played a bunch this morning.  What a terrific time it is to be a Jaguar fan!

    Last Strike

Last Strike is fun.  I got a few scores on the online table, but they probably won't be good enough to stay there for long.  I'm pretty lousy at it - I didn't even get to the end of the first stage or find a shop yet.  I really like the risk/reward tradeoff between rapid fire and rescuing people.  Rapid fire makes it a little easier to blow everything up, but it makes it way easier to kill off the people you need to rescue.  It's smart game design.

Also, I love how Scramble (essentially) is included. It's a great way to distinguish Last Strike as an homage or upgrade and keep the imevitable detractors from branding it a rip-off.

    Rocketeer

I wasn't too active here during the early days of the Jaguar's homebrew scene.  I have a burned copy of Rocketeer, but I haven't put much time into it, and I missed any discussion here when it first came out.

Boy, do I regret that now.  It's a great game!  It's super addicting.  At first I thought the controls were too loose, but I got used to them in a minute or too.  And once I did, I didn't want to put the game down.  It would be fun with just the jetpack/enemy blasting combination.  But the rocket assembly and R-E-B-O-O-T collecting give it just the extra gameplay that it needs to be a classic.  I honestly feel like this game alone would be worth a $30-40 standalone purchase.

    Downfall

I only put a few minutes into Downfall today because I've played it for an hour or two within the past year, and I already know it's simple and addicting.  I'm glad to finally have an authentic copy, because it's totally worth paying for.  I'm looking forward to discovering any additions that were made to this version.

    Dragonkeep

Dragonkeep is fun, but the controls feel a little loose.  This makes jumping over fireballs in the first portion a little frustrating.  The movement speed in the treasure-collecting portion feels pretty fast, and that led to a ton of accidental deaths.  But it's still an enjoyable experience.

    Do the Same

I don't think I've played Do the Same before, but it's pretty great.  The puzzles are interesting enough without the time limit, so I don't know that a time limit or lives system is necessary.  I could take a photo of the screen to figure out the quickest route to success, but that would feel like cheating.  I don't know how to improve on the really complicated puzzles though, since the time limit prevents me from studying the puzzles to plan my approach.  I wonder if a limit on the number of moves would have been a better penalty?  I don't want it to sound like I'm whining though, because I had a lot of fun with it and I'm looking forward to playing more.

That's all I've had time to play so far, but I can't wait to play more.  It deserves to be said again: this is a great time to be a Jaguar fan!

Could always make a special controller where up is disconnected.  :)

Seriously though, Zool does use up and down for climbing walls.   However, with some work you could track down where the jump action is and remove "up" as on option.

I was actually thinking about modding a controller like that.  I'm completely inept when it comes to electronics (well, and most other things), but if it's just a matter of finding the right wire and snipping it, I could probably handle that.

Thanks for pointing out the wall climbing thing though.  It's been awhile since I played Zool 2, and clearly I've forgotten that.  So I guess massacring my controller isn't an option.  😆

  14. Of all the post-commercial games on the Jag, I've probably put more time into Xenon 2 than any other.  I really want to like it, but the enemy patterns and level design really bother me.  I feel like they're just thrown in there without much intentional design, and the result is a frustrating mess of a shmup.  It's the same complaint I have with Trevor McFur.  I love shmups, and I love the Jaguar, so Xenon 2 should be right up my alley.  And I do like to play it.  It's just that I always end up wishing it was more like Gradius, R-Type, or Raiden.

The graphics are pretty sweet though, and it gets to be more fun when you get more powered-up.

  15. Zool 2 always seemed to me like an attractive Jaguar game, but one thing that's held me back from enjoying it is the jumping controls.  Pressing Up on the D-pad makes your character jump (and so does the B button).  No matter how much I try not to, I always find myself hitting Up by accident a few times each playthrough, resulting in accidental jumps and unnecessary damage during platforming segments...which is a significant portion of the game.

Would it be possible to patch the ROM to disable the D-pad Up input?  I don't recall Zool 2 ever requiring you to push Up other than for jumping, so I think disabling the Up input altogether would be sufficient.  I don't have the technical know-how to write a patch.  Does anybody else find this feature annoying?  If it's a common complaint, maybe it would be worth it to get it patched out, especially now that the JagGD is becoming easier to obtain.

    Any thoughts?

  16. Sky Raider is looking better and better!  River Raid is one of the 2600 titles I've put the most time into.  Does this have an EPROM save feature?  I noticed the "Continue" option way back when these videos were first posted, but I didn't think about it much until now.

I love the Lynx.  I was mesmerized and thrilled when it came out.  I have to admit, however, that I am not very good with the actual games.  Batman, is hard as F()ck for me.  Most games, I never get pass the 2nd level/stage.  Some games are freakin' impossible and just frustrating. I tend to go back to the same 6 or 8 games that I like (and can actually do).  Overall, I still love the Lynx.

Batman is exceptionally hard.  It's cheap.  It's not fun to play, in my opinion, though it does have some of the best graphics on the Lynx.

Much of the Lynx's library is made up of arcade ports.  They're intended more as a high score challenge than as a campaign to be beaten.  But games like Scrapyard Dog, Shadow of the Beast, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Chip's Challenge, Crystal Mines II, Double Dragon, Toki, Ninja Gaiden, Slime World, and a few others are all beatable if you put in the time.

  18. I got a Jaguar CD around 1996 and have put extensive time into the games I had back then: Baldies, Blue Lightning, Myst, Primal Rage, Space Ace, and Vid Grid.  I picked up the rest of the library in the years since, but sadly I've barely played any of those additional titles other than Iron Soldier 2.   I hadn't even tried Brain Dead 13 or Hover Strike U.L. until I got the GameDrive.

BD13 didn't give me a good first impression at all.  I only put time into Space Ace back in the day because I was a kid and I HAD time to burn.  Now I have far better games to play, and the pulseless gameplay of those laserdisc titles just doesn't do anything for me.

Hover Strike seemed awful at first.  I haven't played much of its cartridge-based brother, and the CD game seemed a little rough.  It probably didn't help that I started on the "night" mission and could barely see a thing.  But I came to like it after a few minutes and I can see myself putting more time into it.

I'm looking forward to playing more of World Tour Racing once it works.  I've played it before and remember being somewhat impressed by how it performs for a Jag game.

How did you get the patched Checkered Flag to work?  I really like the retail version, believe it or not, and the steering patch was one of the biggest reasons I was looking forward to the GameDrive.  But I can't get it to run.
