  1. In the sense of how each game system was designed in a way that looked good on paper, but contained a fatal flaw. The Jaguar's lack of software libraries, combined with the 68k sitting in the wilderness like the serpent's apple, was doomed from the start. How is a weak software library a design flaw?
  2. Wow, I never knew that but looks like you're right: http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/2975/sl...ldjfrontyg9.jpg http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/3820/sl...rldjbackeq5.jpg I guess they've broadened the cast this time around.
  3. It's pretty similar to the Lynx version, though I prefer the Lynx's soundtrack by a long shot. The big difference here is that the one screen on the Genesis version displays the same in-game-space as four screens of the Lynx version. The Genesis version has some nicer graphics in some spots, like the parallax scrolling as Todd traverses the planet's surface.
  4. They probably could've beefed up Doom a little bit, but not as much as Doom64. The lighting in the Jag version was much more realistic than the PC and PSX versions, but also less dynamic. But yes, the Jaguar version of Wolfenstein 3D looks absolutely stunning compared to the PC version, which was much uglier than Doom IMO.
  5. Programming wise, sure. But for 90% of the game you're looking at a black background. Hardly a graphics masterpiece. The models are nice with the shading and decalmapping, but there's just not much in the way of graphics to look at. You obviously haven't played it networked with a dozen other ships in your view all firing on you! Hey, you're right! I'll just round up 12 of my closest friends and...Oh. Fuck.
  6. I've cleared the board perhaps 5 times out of 100 plays or so. I find the spider somewhat easier than the others because there are more "freebie" tiles, i.e. ones without more than one neighbor so that they never block anything but are always there when you need them to clear out another tile.
  7. Flashback is the same as the 3DO version. Baldies is the same as the Playstation version. Also Doom, Myst, NBA Jam, Primal Rage, Rayman, Syndicate, Theme Park, Troy Aikman Football, and probably a few others have the same artwork as their other ports.
  8. That's unfortunate. They're based in the East Town Mall here in Green Bay. I've bought a good deal of stuff from them in the last few years and I've never had a problem with anything, though I don't think I've bought any consoles from them. The guys that run the store are really cool, so it's gotten to be one of my favorite stores in town.
  9. I was there today (wearing a Castlevania T-shirt if anyone cares) and I had a good time. Picked up Gradius Gaiden for the PSX. I saw a lot of good Atari stuff but nothing I was willing to spring for. I did get a chance to play Battlesphere Gold, thanks to the gentleman from the Goatstore who walked me through it. It was a bit over my head since I couldn't make out the colors on the radar. But still fun.
  10. I'll be going to this for sure, I've been looking forward to it. Was hoping to meet up with some online friends there, but most have canned out. I dunno if I'll be looking to buy anything, but I'm sure my cash will be burning in my pocket before long.
  11. Either way is fine. That's why both sets of A & B buttons are enabled. I've always used the top pair, but my sister always used to use the bottom pair.
  12. Raiden is okay. The sprite-to-screen size ratio is pretty high so there's not much room to maneuver. And the controls are a tad slow, which is always frustrating in a shooter. The only way to really survive is to grab the "P" powerup that appears right away for full power, and then don't get hit for the rest of the game. There's also no music beyond the title screen. But it's Raiden alright.
  13. I'll "second" the Bill & Ted and Klax vote. Klax is simply one of the most impressive Lynx titles from a technological standpoint, and it's really fun too. Bill & Ted is a really fun adventure game with a well-balanced difficulty curve and a fantastic soundtrack. And yes, CA Games isn't the Lynx's killer app. If there was one, I'd pick Lemmings or Klax.
  14. I believe it was partly to show off the power of the Lynx and partly because the CC programming crew was bored. It's actually the main reason I bought the game; I'd heard about this awesome secret that was bigger than the game itself and had to try it out. I didn't really care for it once I tried it, but the actual game is quite fun.
  15. 01) Lemmings (hands down the top Lynx title IMO - incredible soundtrack and super fun levels, also with the best Lemmings interface I've used) 02) Todd's Adventures in Slime World (it's so much fun to get lost in the planet's interior, I'll probably never find all the different tunnels and rooms) 03) Shadow of the Beast (mindblowing graphics, great gameplay, and probably the most fairly balanced port of SotB that I know of) 04) Scrapyard Dog (a real gem, tons of replay value with all the secret exits and bonuses and minigames) 05) Klax (really shows off what the Lynx can do) 06) Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (the most underrated Lynx title IMO, it's got some great music, clever puzzles, and top-notch level design) 07) Warbirds (another technological showcase for the Lynx, I've actually gotten the kill counter to max out at 99 without 1 death) 08) S.T.U.N. Runner (plays super fast and is quite fun, though I never appreciated it when I was younger) 09) Shanghai (addicting gameplay, 'nuff said) 10) California Games (far more solid than most pack-in titles, also has some great variety in the gameplay on offer)
  16. I haven't played the Amiga original. Which of the Lynx parts were added/enhanced? I know the Genesis version has a motorbike sequence, though I've never made it nearly that far.
  17. It's not bad for a handheld shooter from 1989, but it's pretty horrid compared to horizontal shooter classics like Gradius and R-Type. It just moves incredibly slowly and the gameplay is pretty shallow.
  18. Yup, all three of those are really good. Slime World is like Metroid in that you trek all across these subterannean passages on a distant planet and get lost several times over in your attempt to get away. But there's none of the ability upgrades of Metroid, just a few items that you can find, use, and lose over the course of your game. So it's more the atmosphere and not so much the gameplay that are Metroid-esque. Slime World is one of my favorite Lynx games. Shadow of the Beast is among the best for the system. The graphics and music are all top notch. The difficulty isn't as brutal as the SNES and Genesis ports, but it's still a somewhat challenging game. It almost does have the Metroid gameplay, as you explore a large area looking for the switches and items you need to open up the path to the next big area. There's a little bit of backtracking, and if you go into the wrong area before you have the right equipment, you're doomed. But it isn't too hard to figure out with a little exploration. I haven't played too much Rampage, just a little bit on an emulator, but the classic Rampage gameplay is intact.
  19. I really like my sun visor. My first few Lynxes got a bunch of light scratches on the screen just from me putting it in and out of the pouch. Then I got a screen visor with my latest one, which I've had for a good 12 years, and there isn't a single scratch on it to this day.
  20. I know, I was being facetious.
  21. Yup, I was a dummy and forgot to include the password with the post. When you reminded me, I figured it would be best to put the password right next to the links for minimal confusion. But it seems you're the only one who's downloaded it, so now it's all good (I think). Glad you like them!
  22. I ran a cable from the Lynx headphone jack out to my laptop, and recorded/edited them with Audacity. The results were fantastic for a non-professional, unexperienced job IMO. The rapidshare links are below. The files were too big to include as one download, so I had to split it into two. Oh, and please let me know if you've downloaded and/or enjoyed this so I can get that warm, fuzzy feeling inside. Part 1: http://rapidshare.com/files/31744717/Atari..._Rips1.zip.html Part 2: http://rapidshare.com/files/31751924/Atari..._Rips2.zip.html password: my username, no spaces, all caps.
  23. Hey all. A few years back I ripped the soundtracks from quite a few Lynx games and converted them to .ogg's. At the time, the only Lynx community I was aware of was the dwindling gang at gamefaqs's Lynx sub-forum, so there was very little interest in my project. But I still have all the rips if anybody here is interested. I could probably upload them to rapidshare or something for an easy way to exchange them. ...or are they already out there somewhere? I was unable to find too much online back then. I also did a bunch of Jaguar soundtracks, but the sound quality is horrid since I didn't have a composite cable at the time and had to go through my TV's headphone-out jack. (Urk!) But I suppose I could upload those as well if anybody wants them. Oh, and the tunes I ripped are: Alien Vs. 24. I would think if it turned off the backlight and not the screen itself, the result would be something like the original Gameboy or GBA screens - there's an image there, but without a backlight you'll need to be in direct sunlight to see it. When you press the backlight button on the Lynx, the screen goes off altogether. Even in bright, direct light there's absolutely nothing you can see on the screen.
  25. I finished it. Once. I don't really think it's all that hard though...it's just that you have to start from the beginning each time since there's no password system. But it really only takes about 45 minutes to play all the way through once you know what to do. It ends shortly after the castle, in case you're wondering how far along you are. Anyway, I think the Lynx port is much easier than the SNES and Genesis ports, since the enemies move far too fast in those. The Lynx one is just right. Great game though. The graphics and music are among the best on the Lynx, IMO. The end credit music is probably among my top 3 favorite Lynx tunes.
