    More and more impressive, congrats!

Just a question, at around 34 second it says 3d effect, but I'm not sure I can see it... Does it refer to the other effect later in the video with the rotating fireballs?

I thought it was in reference to the huge spacecraft coming out of the background.  Looks like a 3D model to me.

This continues to look impressive, Bob_63.  I can't wait to experience it on a real Lynx!

The disappearing BIN after a first bid is an interesting aspect of EBay. I don't buy much on there, if I do it's things like closeout games from wholesalers where they have dozens/hundreds of copies, but if I do see a new listing and there's a reasonable BIN that's the way to go. Too many people get caught up in bidding wars. I don't sell much on EBay, but every time I list something w/a BIN and make offer, I get the most ridiculous offers of all time. So it's easier to just throw something up at 99c and let it ride.

This thread has definitely lit a bit of a fire beneath me to stop being lazy and to list some of my Jag games.

In Ebay's eyes, it probably builds urgency.  If you're torn between either placing a bid or just clicking Buy It Now, and you know you can change your mind afterward, then you might as well just bid.  But if you know that BIN could disappear at any second (because somebody else placed a bid), then you have an extra incentive to use BIN.

  3. The last time we heard from them, they were stringing the community along, stating they were doing another run of Hotdog and Relief Pitcher.  They reappeared periodically to stoke the interest before disappearing for good.

  4. All of those backgrounds look great!  I actually like the third one the best, but I do see the point about colors not standing out.  Maybe use it in a place where your foreground is a different shade, or as a background on a text screen, or something?  It's too pretty to ditch altogether.

    Hi everyone !

It's been a long time, but since the release of the game in 2019, I've been working hard on creating a "deluxe" version. I've added new levels, new games modes, and polished the overall game experience. I've also included 3 bonus games on the cartridge: Timeloop, Fishing for Atari, and Gift Catcher.

This game should be published on cartridge in a fully featured boxed edition, hopefully by the end of 2021.

Meanwhile, the first beta version of the game is available right now for people who support me on Patreon: https://patreon.com/posts/47298674

That's awesome!  Day One order for me.

Playstation and Saturn are the 1st wave that had mainly good games.  SEGA CD/3DO/CDi ratio of good to bad games was about the same as the Jag

I'd argue in favor of the PC Engine-CD.  That thing had tons of amazing games.  The Japanese library is enormous, so I can't comment on the ratio of good to bad games.  But for that matter, how many crappy FMV games are on the Sega CD?  It can't be a major component of that game library.  And there are plenty of awesome Sega CD games anyway.

I emailed John Carmack earlier today thanking him for the Jaguar ports of Wolf and Doom and he wrote me back; which is pretty cool.

Okay, that's just awesome.  I've reached out to far less iconic gaming figures and never gotten a response.  Really cool to read this.

  8. I love Wolfenstein on the Jag.  It's just pure fun to play.  It has a different vibe than the PC original, and I enjoy both - but the Jaguar port is just ramped up to perfection, or something.  The map feature, the updated graphics, the silky smooth and fast gameplay, and most importantly the new weapons - it all just comes together so wonderfully.

I do have the 3DO port, but until I get my 3DO I have no way to play it.  I've played the SNES port and it's decent.  And I was just playing the Xbox 360 version a few nights ago.  The slow music speed is usually a deal breaker for me, but I was finally able to get past that and play most of the way through Episode 6.  While it's fun, the labyrinthine level design and lack of a map make it unnecessarily frustrating.  Really, some of those maps are just stupidly designed.  It was the dawn of the genre, so I get that there wasn't much to build on.  But that particular aspect has not aged well at all.  And in that sense, the streamlined maps of the Jag version are a real upgrade.

Now what this world needs is the wizards behind Doom: Slayer Edition to port Spear of Destiny to the Jag.  Right after they do Heretic and bring about world peace, of course.

  9. Whether or not the term Metroidvania is a good term is irrelevant.  When somebody uses the term, we all (or most of us, at least) know what is being referred to.  It doesn't have to have themes from either Metroid or Castlevania.  It just needs to have the gameplay elements that most Metroids and the SotN-style Castlevanias share:

    1) a 2D, sidescrolling view

    2) one large interconnected map

    3) exploration and backtracking

    4) accessing new areas via newly found traversal abilities

The thing is, we need to have a term to represent this style of game.  Until something better takes its place, that term is Metroidvania.

  10. I'm always up for any new software on the Jag.  But Metroidvania is one of my favorite genres, so this is a great concept in my book!  I can't say how many times I've played through Super Metroid, Zero Mission, Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, etc.  Something about the interconnecting map and the traversal-based upgrades make the world so much more immersive.  Thanks for taking up the mantle, phoboz, and I'm looking forward to updates!

  11. I like Checkered Flag.  It's probably entirely for nostalgia reasons, to be honest.  I got it as a gift around 1994 or 1995, and I played it enough that I actually took first place in tournament mode a few times.  The controls never get good, but if you play it enough you can get used to them just enough to keep your car off the walls.

If it wasn't for the controls, I would actually rate the game something like a 8/10 for its time.  The graphics were solid back in the day and the music was catchy and memorable.  But controls are only the most essential thing in a racing game, so they bring the score way down of course.

Believe it or not, one of the biggest reasons I'm looking forward to the JagGD is to try out the Steering Patch version.

  12. It's been probably 30 years since I put any substantial time into Centipede.  I'm way overdue!  I definitely want a copy, but I'll be buying Unnamed as well once it's available.  Is there any option to combine orders to save on shipping?

EDIT: Disregard this.  I placed my order for Centipede.  With so many cool releases on the horizon, it's probably just easier to order as I go.  :)

  13. Blue Lightning isn't that bad on JagCD.  It isn't a system seller, and it's not nearly as impressive on the hardware as the Lynx version.  But I spent a lot of time with it in 1995 and still toss it in once in awhile these days.  It's fun, and it does a decent enough job as a super-scaler Top Gun simulator from 1995.

Iron Soldier II and Battlemorph are the best reasons to have a Jaguar CD, but even those are far from system sellers.

Baldies is probably my favorite game on the platform.  I must have a magic CD unit, because mine only locked up once or twice in the dozens of hours I put into Baldies.  I played all the way up to the Hell levels (80% through the game), and really found it to be a fun title.  I mean, you can invent a minefield and plant it outside your enemies' stronghold, then craft a skunk into a stinkbomb and drop it on the building.  Half the bad guys run out the door, right into your minefield. How is that not awesome?

Once I got the docs I realized that it could not be used to what I wanted to develop. So it stayed in my cupboard untl my kids got old enough.

If you don't mind my asking, what was it that you wanted to develop on the Lynx?  And did you get the chance to develop that idea someplace else?

I'm glad you gave the Lynx dev scene a second chance!

  15. Around 1989, I wanted an NES and/or Gameboy.  My parents thought I only wanted them so I could be cool like my friends.  My dad proposed getting the Atari Lynx instead.  I wasn't familiar with it but I looked at the Toys 'R Us and Electronics Boutique ads, and it looked really awesome.  My parents and I each put in $50 and I got it for Christmas.  They threw in Warbirds.
