Rampart and Xybots are both fairly awesome. Xybots especially - I really want to go back and finish it, and take some time to explore more. It really seems like it has a lot of depth for a handheld game of its era (yes, I realize it's an arcade port).
I also really have fun with Basketbrawl. It's generally panned by the community, but I find it deeply satisfying to smash my opponent's face with the ball, and then make rapid layups over his incapacitated body. Why nunchuks haven't been incorporated into the NBA in this day and age is a mystery.

Awesome, I can't wait to play them! It's always good to browse your site - makes me feel like a kid on Christmas again.

Slime World, Shadow of the Beast, and Klax are some of the best on the system. Chip's Challenge is also fantastic. Really though, there's so much great content on the Lynx. There are only a handful of titles that you should avoid, (Pit Fighter, Tournament Cyberball, Krazy Ace Mini Golf, probably a few others) and even those have their fans.

This makes me want to play through the Marine campaign again. I feel like going and grabbing the first couple security cards and guns, and then getting myself lost in the training maze. Such a fun game!
I played Alien Vs. Predator a lot back in the day. Beat it over and over as all three characters and had most of the game memorized. Then I put it down and barely touched it for at least 15 years. I played it again last year, and I was psyched to realize I had forgotten where most of the keycards and weapons were.
So I played it again from scratch, mapping everything out by hand and refusing to use any outside resources, even when I got stuck halfway through. It was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've had in recent years. Do you ever wish you could forget one of your favorite games, so that you could enjoy it for the first time all over again? That's just about what this was, and it was glorious.

Lots of games aren't about relaxation. If you think about it, it's much more common for a game to feature tension and some degree of frustration. A good roller coaster is much more about tension than relaxation, yet tension can be immensely fun.
Alien Vs Predator is about immersion, and suspense, and balancing your resources while you explore and find your own way through the space station.

3 hours ago, Jaguar 2000 said:which ones are the alien, predator and marine maps?
They're all the same. All three campaigns take place in the same space station. The only difference is that they start in different locations, and the Predator can't fit into air ducts, and the Alien can't use the elevators.
It sounds like you might be playing the game wrong. It's not meant to play like Doom or Wolfenstein 3D. It's more of a survival horror game. You have to manage your resources while exploring the space station. If you get to an area where you're horribly outmatched by enemies (namely sublevels 1 and 5), you probably are there too early. Explore around for key cards and weapons, and the motion tracker. Use the automap to draw your own schematics on graph paper (or just use the ones provided above, but that's soooooo not 1995).
Of course it might just not be your thing, and that's totally okay. But if you're looking for a straightforward, action packed experience like other FPSes of its time, you're guaranteed to hate AvP.

I have a sealed Dragon's Lair I can check when I get home from work. But I was also thinking it would be the Styrofoam insert. Space Ace and Braindead 13 have them too, but not Myst, Primal Rage, or Baldies.

Dracula is pretty solid on the Lynx. It's a totally unique game, exclusive to the Lynx. Some parts are a little annoying, but it's an enjoyable experience overall, and it has some of the best atmosphere on the Lynx. And once you've figured out the earlier parts, it's not too tough to do the whole game in one sitting.

There are what -- nine or so characters to play -- (even though I always seem to end up as Mr. Eeez) and heck -- you can even play as the Snotterpillar when comlynxed! And it has Festors! It's an awesome and amazing game.
You actually have only one crappy and one mediocre game on your list -- the rest range from good to outstanding. Time to get playing!
I know! It IS criminal, and I'm guilty as charged. I've had a Lynx for something like 30 years, and I've still barely scratched the surface of Xenophobe. I'm also a massive fan of the Alien franchise.
Just out of curiosity, which games are the mediocre and crappy ones? I'm guessing Gauntlet and Ninja Gaiden III? I've spent a few hours on NGIII, but I'm a huge NG fan and would like to beat it someday. I haven't beaten the NES NGIII either, but I've beaten the first two NES NG games a few times.
I like the comparison to Klax. I have a massive backlog of games to play, and it gets longer way faster than I can keep up with it. I didn't even put the sports titles on my list, because I don't plan to ever put much time into them.

If you're like me, you've got a running list of Lynx games you've been wanting to put some good time into. Maybe you're waiting for a rainy day. Maybe you just don't have much time for gaming. I've played just about all the commercial titles and most homebrews at least briefly, but there are plenty that I want to come back to because they clearly have some good depth.
What's on your list? And what's keeping you from it?
Here is my list:
Battle Wheels
Blue Lightning
Championship Rally
Cybervirus
Gauntlet: the Third Encounter
Ninja Gaiden
Ninja Gaiden III
Roadblasters
Rygar
Xenophobe
Zaku
Zarlor Mercenary

Very cool! I'm not huge into RPGs, but that didn't stop me from playing through Wyvern Tales and loving every second of it. I'm looking forward to sitting down with Kings of Edom as well.

How is it that Good Deal Games is already selling these same Prototypes? Do you know about this, MacRorie?

Thanks for all the answers! I'm not in any way trying to rush you. Even if you had no job and no obligations to take care of, going through all of these files somewhat thoroughly would take an eternity, and a helluva lot of organization.
I guess I have just two more questions:
1) If I hold off on ordering, say, the Guardians: Storm over Doria prototype for now, and wait until everything has been released in a year or however long it takes...will Guardians still be available then? Or are you just printing like 25 copies, and when they're gone, they're gone?
2) Do you think you might offer a discount for a bigger purchase, maybe of ten or twenty carts?
Thanks!
-
MacRorie, how many of these do you plan to put out on cartridge? If each one turns out to be a prototype, will each one get a cart release? And if I choose to wait to make a purchase until the last of these files are available on cart, will these earlier ones still be available to buy then? Or are you only putting out limited numbers?
I'm trying to decide which ones to buy, but I clearly won't have the cash available to buy every single one. Like the first group of photos, do you plan to release these roms to the community after a year? Sorry for all the questions, but my subtotal is already getting pricey and I'm trying to be smart about this...not easy for me when it comes to buying games.

I have to admit I've watched more than a few videos about the game and it's complete slating of it, and now I've played it myself on a console, I just don't see it myself. I had this impression in my head that it was an annoying voiceovered laggy low frame rate game and it really wasn't. In fact it felt really smooth! I only did the first sector as I was just trying it out but I really didn't mind it. The controls felt OK for the controller too, nothing felt really out of place. I would like to finish it sometime when I get a decent go of it.
Welcome to the Jaguar community! Your experience makes sense - there's a lot of bashing by those who have only read about the Jaguar and never played one. But those of us who have played it know it's got some pretty solid content and gets an unfairly bad rap. Granted, there is plenty of bad-to-mediocre stuff on the Jag too.

Cool review! It's always good to see the Lynx get some screen time, and this is positive screen time no less.
But did anybody else notice that the Evercade "thumbnail" screenshot for Slime World uses a screenshot of the Genesis port? Dunno how they didn't catch that, as the Genesis has something like four times the resolution of the Lynx.

Here are some more, for anybody curious. There is a fifth one, but the screen scrolls up and down to display the full image, so I can't show the whole thing in a still photo.
MTR, can you say where you found the Megan Fox file? I really hate to not have the creator of these acknowledged, but I can't seem to find anything here.

20 hours ago, Agent X said:Compared to Lynx, Game Gear has somewhat higher vertical resolution and twice the onscreen colors, but also much worse sound and sprite handling capabilities. Even back then, there was no doubt in my mind that the Lynx would've been able to offer a more faithful version of Mortal Kombat. The homebrew demo has proven that in very convincing fashion.
The Lynx has been shown in recent years to be capable of far more than 16 colors onscreen at a time. Dunno if you've seen that tech demo with the Megan Fox photo on the Lynx, but it's gorgeous...and not just because it's Megan Fox.
I know it's not fair to compare work done on the Lynx 30 years after its life to work done on the Game Gear in its heyday, but has the Game Gear ever been shown to do more than 32 colors onscreen?

Great news!
These will both be Day 1 purchases for me. Is there any difference between this version of Quadromania and the one sold by Luchsoft? I haven't gotten around to picking up that one yet.

Wow, this is really looking beautiful. I love the pixel art, especially in the jungle-themed areas. Day 1 purchase, of course.

Really cool stuff! I too had heard way back (not from any official source) that Ninja Nerd eventually became Fat Bobby. But from this, they look totally different. The only similarity I see is that the appearance of one of the alternate characters looks similar to Bobby. For the creators to scrap the progress they had in Ninja Nerd to work on Fat Bobby instead, it would be like starting over mostly from scratch and making a new game.
It's a little weird that Geoduel uses the sound effects of Warbirds. Of course the game is far from complete there, so they might have just been placeholders.
Most importantly, if you pause at the bottom edge of Guardians's map screen and turn the Lynx sideways, the mountains become boobs. Best Lynx game ever!

By far the most important thing I noticed: if you pause at the bottom edge of Guardians's map screen (timestamp 11:20) and turn the Lynx sideways, the mountains become boobs. Best Lynx game ever!

Wasn't Battle Sphere a homebrew? Clearly I must be mistaken here, as it surely would've been mentioned by now. I thought it was made by just a handful of fans, as impressive as it is.

I ordered this as soon as I saw the email a few days ago. I still haven't given the original Cybervirus the time it deserves, but I'm looking forward to investing more time into both games!

Wait, Zool 2 has a password feature? How did I not know this? I thought you had to play from the beginning every time, and Bulberry Hill bores me to tears.
While we're at it, is there some secret way to disable the Up button making you jump?
