Incredible! I'm curious whether the "Slime" file is a prototype of Slime World? I also wonder whether any of the previously unreleased content could be finished and released, like Mr. Forhan has so kindly done with other games. Lots of great news here.

I love shmups, and the arcade version of Raiden is one of my favorite games ever. I actually kinda hate the Lynx port because it's scaled down so much from the original, and it doesn't have music.
I've also barely put any time into Zarlor Mercenary. I know it has a number of fans, and I'd like to play more of it. The little that I've played didn't Wow me though. It seemed like a lot of enemies were just thrown at me with little deliberate level design...just like Trevor McFur, which I really really despise.
I guess all I can say is that I don't care much for either game. I do like Zaku somewhat. Gates of Zendocon is alright, but it plays really slowly for a shmup. I haven't found a shmup on the Lynx that I really loved, unless you consider Robotron 2084 a shmup.

It's a patch that Reboot put out, available right here at AtariAge for the cost of the Search feature and a smidge of patience.

I love my Jag. I bought it in 1994 and have been a fan(boy) ever since. I have a complete cartridge and CD library and still play my Jag maybe ten times a year.
That said, I don't know that it would be worth it to you to buy another Jaguar. If the commercial library didn't hook you, none of the post-commercial releases are likely to either. There's some really good stuff on the Jaguar, and it gets a completely unfair rap among the general gaming public, most of whom have never even played it. But it's just so expensive now that I can't really recommend it to somebody who had one and didn't like it enough to hang onto the first time around.
...Unless of course you buy a Jaguar and a Jag Game Drive, and forego buying any software that's available on ROM. Then it might be financially worth what you put into it. But that's for you to decide, not me.

Reason is I really don't care for playing racing games for the, hum... race. I love to watch the graphics and just drive around with no pressure to finish in first (maybe Club Drive sounds like a good fit??)
Despite the framerate (which I also don't mind), CF actually has awesome graphics and if you're not actually racing, it's good simple arcade fun.
Checkered Flag was one of the earliest games I had for the Jag back in the day. I had plenty of fun with it and even took first place in Championship Mode at least once. Yeah, the controls are broken, and because it's a racing game with broken controls, I can't in honesty call it a good game. But the controls can be mastered, and there are plenty of other redeeming qualities like a pretty good soundtrack and some decent graphics.
I'm really looking forward to getting a Jag GameDrive so that I can enjoy Checkered Flag with the fixed controls patch.

It's always cool to learn about the development of the games I've enjoyed. I wonder if any other Lynx games have "back door" features built in for future expansion.

I have a sealed copy I'm selling for $130, if you're interested.

I can't even bring myself to try them on the E. A collection on the PSP.
Far too cut down from the Amiga Syndicate I knew for my tastes.
Ugh, I hunted down that compilation because I just assumed the Syndicate port would be the original. I ended up finding it at a show and overpaying for it, because I was sick of hunting for it. Once I fired it up, I realized it was a port of the Genesis version. I never played it again. Serves me right for not doing my research.

Syndicate! As much as I love AvP and Tempest 2000, Syndicate might be my favorite game on the Jaguar. It's true the controls are complicated, and I think that makes it hard for many fans to get into Syndicate. But if you can learn the controls, there's a ton of fun to be had!
I think Syndicate is a great example of the Jaguar's controller being used wisely. That number pad can serve more of a function than just selecting your weapons quickly in Doom (which is already more than what contemporary controllers could do!). Some of the other console ports of Syndicate had to be completely retooled from the PC version just to be functional on a controller. But the Jaguar version lets you direct your agents in different directions, shoot at different targets, scroll through available weapons and inventory, and adjust each agent's drug levels individually, all with relative ease...but only once you've mastered those controls.
For me, the joy in Syndicate lies in building your corporation from a tiny fledgling operation to a global powerhouse. Initially, you're outnumbered and outgunned almost everywhere you go. But by the end of the game, you have super-powered agents, top of the line tech, and insanely powerful weapons.
Shinto, I've played through Syndicate beginning to end at least three times. I'm pretty familiar with it. If there's anything I can help with, please let me know. I've been looking forward to this episode of the podcast for years.

Funny...I skimmed the first post without checking the date, and I was thinking how much it took me back to the dusk of the Jaguar's commercial run.

Holy cow, this looks cool! A definite purchase for me. For the record, I have a rotary controller and would love the option to use it here, but I'll buy the game whether or not it has rotary support. I think rotary controllers are pretty common among Jaguar fans, since Tempest 2000 and Rebooteroids are among the more popular Jaguar titles, and rotaries are pretty readily available these days. I've even seen a variety of different Jag rotary controllers in my local used game shops.

54 minutes ago, tripled79 said:Why does this game often get misspelled as Vortex? I thought it clearly spelled as Vortek.
I believe when the game was first announced, the name Ultra Vortex was floating around. Whether as a misspelled information leak, or as a potential alternate name, I have no idea. Maybe because "vortek" isn't an actual word? But for whatever reason, I've seen that misspelling since before the game even launched.

I really need to spend more time with Turrican. I have Super Turrican on SNES and Mega Turrican, and I've played Super Turrican 2 briefly. All were fun, but didn't hook me. But I know many retro gamers gush about them.

The USA mail system has been delayed since the pandemic/lockdown began, at least when it comes from imported packages. I had to wait an extra month for some imports, so it's possible your packages may be delivered yet. Unreasonable, yes, but that's just how it is.

Disregard, sorry.

Take Custodian as an example I bought it and it's a total shocker. Just my opinion but I totally wasted my money I should have copied it on to a 10p floppy and tried it out first. My bad.
Custodian is only a few years old, just FYI. It's not among the orignal commercial releases.
I'm curious though - which homebrews do you rate above which commercial releases?

A quick tip for Iron Soldier, as I don't think it's mentioned in the manual: you can pivot much more quickly if you hold down A+C while turning. It speeds up your movement just enough to make things easier.

I have zero desire to use any cheats in AvP. The game is all about tension and atmosphere. If you take away the need to play carefully, conserve ammo, and watch your health, then you take away the game experience itself.
I enjoy getting lost in the game. I played AvP to death back in the day. But then I set it down for 16 years or so and just came back to it last year. I had forgotten where most of the keycards were and had to map out the game by hand, from scratch.
It was amazing. It was easily one of the most memorable game experiences of my past five years. Have you ever wanted to go back and experience one of your favorite games for the first time again? This was much like that.
Regarding the self destruct sequence, you do have to switch floors. The self destruct is on sub-level 2. The escape pod is on sub-level 5. It's much easier to get to your escape pod if you do a dry run just before hitting the switch, so that you can clear out all the enemies ahead of time. With a clear path to the escape pod it's not too hard at all.

This is awesome! Just to make sure, the "single" option for Biniax has both Biniax and Biniax 2 on one cart, right?
-
I was unaware of Metal Mutant until now. Sounds sketchy though - Atari, always desperate for software for their consoles, turned down a game that was ready to go?
Anyway, why Bitchy? Because I have a complete commercial Lynx collection and have moved on to homebrew and obscurities, because I played the slider game demos made by the same guy and they're addicting, and because boobs, I guess.

I'm kinda split on this, but my $0.02 are mostly in line with KevinMos3. I felt let down reading MacRorie's update. I would have loved to have bought the prototypes myself in order to get them to Carl Forhan for free distribution and saleable printed copies. The community would get the roms and I would have the unique originals - a win-win. When I learned that the auction was over before it had even been posted here, I felt equally bummed.
I don't think MacRorie is doing what he said he was going to do. Yeah, he'll release the roms...eventually. But first he wants to make back his purchase price by taking advantage of fans too impatient to wait another year to see these protos. If things go optimally for him, he'll come out of this with the original prototypes, essentially for free, and he'll make profit off of whatever additional orders roll in. It's like he wants to have his cake and eat it too.
At the same time, he has every right to do what he's doing. I'm not entitled to any of this content. And I would probably buy a few of these on cartridge anyway, to add to my collection.
It's just the releasing of the roms after a year that bothers me.

Totally jealous. I'd pay decent money for a copy of Bitchy.

You'd have to check with the folks at Jaguar Sector III. Make sure to bring a few grains of salt with you.

Torrent for Homebrews?
in Atari Lynx
Posted · Edited by PFG 9000
decided my original response was too harsh
I don't know of anything like that. Personally I would love the ability to buy roms for games like Championship Rally and Zaku so that I can play them on my LynxSD.
