  1. I stumbled across this..... https://ilesj.wordpress.com/2010/07/01/how-to-identify-c64-and-sid-model/

From what he says, if you look inside the expansion port (the 64C) and you see the fuse the LONG way, you have the OLD motherboard with the 6581 SID. If the fuse is pointing towards you, you have the newer, short board with the 8580 SID. This coincides with what others have said above.

I guess I have the best of both worlds, as I really like the looks of the 64C better, and I have the older board in mine, with the 6581. YEAH ME!!

I have another 64C in a storage locker somewhere. I will have to dig it out and see what board that one has in it. Can not wait for my 1541 Ultimate II+ to arrive. Ordered it two months ago, so it should be coming soon!!!

BTW... I have the NEWER keyboard, with the graphics symbols on top of the keys below the letters. Not on the font of the keys.

  2. Is there a way to type in a command and find out which version you have? On the Atari 8-bits you could type in "PRINT PEEK(65527)" to find out which version of the OS you are running, amd "PRINT PEEK(43234)" to find out the revision of BASIC you are running. Anything similar in Commodore land to determine anything inside the 64?

  3. OK, SO i dug 2 Vic 20's out of my storage locker. Been in there at least 10 years. No idea how in the hell they got in there, but I knew they were there. Got the itch and ordered a Final Cart III for the Vic 20, so I figured I would go get the Vic's out of the locker.

Both are the old style with the Black and white label, and the 2 pin power connector. I working power supply and 1 RF modulator.

Vic 20 #1 no video. Power LED comes on, sends a video signal, but no video. Reading online, found out it is usually the VIC or the kernel that is bad. Also possibility of a bad ram chip. Tried with both RF Modulator and known good composite cable.

Vic 20 #2 works great. Using RF modulator on modern TV, correct colors, but a little hazy, as to be expected from an RF on a new TV. After a few minutes, I get Yellow marks running down the borders on both sides. Nothing in the main screen, just down the light blue borders. Using the 5 pin din composite cable, looks a lot better, but colors are off. Yellow also starts running down the side.

After a few minutes lines have went away!! Woohoo!!! Amyhpw, here is a pic with the compisite video cable. NOTE: Vable works fine on Atari 8-bit and c64c.

  4. So I found a good deal on 9V 500Ma power adapters at Monoprice, or so I thought. $5 each. Problem is, they are female plugs on the end instead of male. Does anyone know of a place that sells female to 1/8" male adapters? Does such a thing exist?

  5. Steve is a class act. I have had many lengthy conversations with him in the past. I can tell you that because of his job, he is a very busy person. Steve is a professional and his job demands a lot of his time, and is stressful. Please give the man a break. I am a motor coach (charter bus) operator, and have been gone for two week at a time. Took trips to Washington DC, brought them home and was on the road headed back there the very next day. So trust me, there are quite a bit of times that I can not return calls or answer E-mails, I know what Steve is going through. Steve does not drive a bus, but his job does consume a lot of time, which does not leave him a lot of free time to do what he does. Be thankful that he still does support our hobby with the time he has available. Without going deeper into his personal life, I can tell you he does have a family as well. I commend him for doing what he does as a professional and as a family man. If I were him, I would not have time for the AtariMax business myself. But because of his love for Atari, he wants to use his knowledge and offer great products to the community. I see the MegaMillion's lottery just had a single winner. To the best of my knowledge it was not Steve. If it was, I am sure he would have more free time with AtariMax.

Please, give the guy a break. He is not going to screw you. He is going to give you a great product at a fair price that you will be very happy with. You just have to understand, the man has a life (and a wife) outside of the Atari community.

  6. No problem at all. Take your time. 3 works fine, so I have that to use until you can find a solution. I am in no hurry, and appreciate your time and effort.

FWIW, I was just in your area the other day (Wednesday). I am a motor coach operator, and drove Cedar Point employees to Navy Peer for the day. Been to the Chicagoland area quite a few times. Always enjoyable.
