  1. I have to agree on the 3D0 equation had little to do w/ anything for Atari few of the 3D0 customers willing to pay $700 at launch for the 3D0 realy cared for Atari....I do remeber a friend of mine bying it, everything look at sounded much better than anything on my Sega/SegaCD....(something I could rarely say for the Jaf in the early days) but every game had a terible lag time unless it was made by EA sports/Crystal Dynamics.

Atari had to market itself as a 64 Bit/32 Bit machine because that is what everyone cared about...more power under the hood....Atari Jaguar's biggest mystake if we can't change the machine is that they did not persue the big 2-D fighters (Mortal Kombat, Samuri Showdown, Street Fighter2, Primal Rage, Pit Fighter, etc.), Sports, or racing games.

If Atari would of released 5 arcade fighters and 5 big name sports games, came out at the $200 price point including a fighter w/ an Arcade controler then their destiny would of changed at that instant and gave them the lead way they needed to take on Sega and Sony 3 years later and with their new focuss of sports/fighters released the Jag CD w/ a new Mortal Kombat 3 pack in then the market would be sealed...3-D games only caught on because of the push from Sony and Jag CD could match what Sega was putting out on the Saturn.

  2. Was that Tiny Toons game far into development?

only one level was partly complete buddy... :(

And as best answer I could get out of former Atari execs was it was probably canceled because of license cost. No one can seem to recall specifically why it was really canceled. I wouldn't be surprised too that they canceled the project because it was just a 2D side scroller and not a 3D game (that's just my theory).

My guess is that it was a title originaly liscensed for the Atari Panther, because I remeber when I looked at the back of the Jag box at the time I thought it was odd that they liscensed Tiny Toons a show that was no longer making new episodes and Fox had replaced w/ Animaniacs by this point on major TV. I figure that they paid the money started on it and put it on the back burner for so long w/ Panther becoming the Jag that they would of had to pay more $$ to liscense what was once a hot liscense and was now a not as hot liscence.....less bang for your buck ...Kids are very loyal to their cartoons only when they are popular....Ask any place that sells action figures...ben 10 was all the rage last year and we sold half as much stuff this year. Very few properties have the longevity of Batman, Spiderman, etc.

  3. Fight For Life- did not age well at all, it is a clunky Virtua Fighter clone that has very long levels. If their was a way to play the Sega Saturn version (the original one that came w/ the system not the remix)then you will be less dissipointed w/ Fight For Life.

Graphicaly it is impressive, but the game plat is so/so plus at this point Virtua Fighter 4 is old news so a game that had slow responce in 93' plays even slower 10 years later.

The game was to much for the system, I know Atari was strugling but this was suppose to be the game to prove the Jag was capable of making any game that Saturn or PS1 could make...looks like if they added Ram and adjusted the game in the slightest it wouldn't be bad

As it stands it is as close to Virtua Fighter 1 as Kausami Ninja is to MK2

....I remeber at 1 point someone made a Remix of this game and released it....if you could find that is the one I would see out

  4. I remeber that the 1st year the PS1 came out that one of my roomates got it for christmas with 2 games (Theme Park and Zoop) and the cd w/ previews. Thanks to that the Jag got another 3 or 4 months to shine before Toshiden, Tekken, and MK 3 Destroyed the Jag.

All my friends were big time into fighters so for a time Ka-soome! Ninja (as the anownser says) was king. Believe it or not 3DO was gaining alot of play time w/ some kind of video game game show calles Twisted? I believe. It was nice because if a group came over w/ girls or non gamers everyone could pla w/ little explanation plus the host of the show would insult you when you answered wrong.

  5. Yeah, I have defended GoAtari as a buissess he does a good job. My complainr was that he came up w/ an idiotic advertising campaign. Since he wants close to his marked prices why we he subject himself to reading countless e-mails of prices he would never except because he stated "NAME YOUR OWN PRICE."

The same thing would happen at any other retailer if Goodyear said name you own price on tires and they sell for $100 a pieces for 11" tires that only work on ten year old Pontiac Lemans that were only made for a five year period. Who is going to say how about $99.95 a piece.

  6. Yeah, I just got a similar replie again not offering $1 a game either, more in the $10 range or so. I got to say if he wants what his website is offering them for I think he would of done better w/ a 10% off sale or $10 a game off regular price. I do not mind someone running a buisness, but sending out a mass e-mail to former customers to "name your own price"...what did you think people would offer you. Hey, it's his buissness and he can do what he wants but I realy don't think he thought this sale through very well.

It should say go to my website pick the games you want then maybe I'll take a couple dollars off the price...

Oh well maybe someone will have better luck than I did, the good news is he seems to offer about every game and accessory made for the system.

  7. VGC tries hard to look at the fact that Checkerd Flag is 1 of 3 racing games on the Jag and gives games a review based on this. But, honestly while I find this game that I once believed to be unplayable as now playable I still do not view it as a fun time. Yes, I am aware that if you change the car Angle then tap on the controller you can get through the race w/ few wrecks....but, common the game is all out awful.

I do wonder if maybe we should make an Atari Jaguar website that reviews games within the bubble of the Jag universe. That since Towers 2 is the only role-playing game on the Jag that it would receive a score of 100% for being what in the Jag world is perfection for role playing games.

  8. To get the full Jag experience you need Cybermorph, Double Dragon 5, Club Drive, Checkerd Flag, Dino Dudes, Dragon, FLip Out, and maybe Trevor McFur. Those games won't cost much and they will give you a good idea what Jaguar has to offer.

  9. Again I think the service already excist through GameStop, and Nintendo Wii. If you have a Wii they just reasently added NEO GEO games arcade perfect I assume 900 points ($9) steap but still cheaper than the ($90-$150) in the day. I would say Nintendo realy came up w/ a way for this to work, people are paying money for games they could easily download of the net w/ little trouble. The Nintendo way is easier and the honest way. I would say hitting them up to cary Jag games (few realy used the # keypad for much) even if you got Atari Age or another online retailer to make an adaptor to use the Jag pad on the Wii would be sweat.

Then if somone wanted to develope for the jag all they would have to do is get Nintendo to put it up on their site....no more expensive cartridges/ or Cd's for a drive most Jag people don't have. It would be secure because as of this moment their is not a widely known way to steal these roms.

Under this synopsis maybe your Gorf game could see the light of day.

  10. Have to agree w/ the Jag CD being a waste of money...the only reason to buy it is to say hahahha I have it and you don't.

As said previously the VLM is cool but evry PC has one, the cd player is acward but it works, not well enouth to turn on your Jag 1st. The player also makes it where it has a harder time reading carts.

Of the few games made 1/3 of the games... Primal Rage, Hover Strike, Battlemorph, Vid Grid, and Iron Soldier2 are the only games that were better than average and were good enouth to compare to Gen1 Playstation.

The other 1/3 of their games Space Ace, Dragons Lair, Brain Dead 13, and Myst...had been done on all other systems and computers of the time looking close or better than the Jag.

And last but not least the Jag CD had some stinkers to....Highlander, Blue lightning, Baldies, etc.

The only other cool thing is the system only has 12 or so games so it is relatively easy to get a complete collection once you are able to find a working CD unit.

The problem is that just like back in the day buying a Jag + a Jag CD is an expensive proposition ($200 to $300 range) and after you combine them their are only 6 or so descent games that are hard to find. When at this moment in the used market for under $300 I can buy my pick of almost every system ever made (Xbox 360 <$220>, Nintendo Wii<$200>, Sega Dreamcast<$50>, etc.)

This was the same problem Atari had back in the day Jag<100>+ Jag CD<200> made the jag the same price or close to the price of the Sega Saturn <400> or PS1<$300>.

The Video Game critic does a good job and I agree 1/ him 90% of the time, the only thing he could do better is try to take in consideration that he is playing a 10 yr old system and how good the game was at that point in time, but his way is better because the people reading the reviews are buying the games in the present

  11. I liked the Lynx and the system was better than the Jaguar, but truely Atari was never going to be considered 1 of the Majors again untill they had a Home System under their belts, Besides by this point both SEGA wich had $$ and NEC had entered the market and while both of them had 8 bit systems once the game was shrunk down to hand held size could you realy see a difference.

I know I couldn't plus Sega had both Sonic and $$ to advertise yet they couldn't put a deasent dent in the hand held market so what makes you think Atari would of.

The only difference is Atari should of made a Lynx Jaf adaptor from day 1, and while they didnt have to drop the Lynx they could of still finished some of their higher profile titles (Aliens Vs Predator) so that they wouldn't of pissed of retailers with the drop of supoort of yet another system.

But the truth is their was no way to save Atari they had screwed to many people in their buisness careers and never tried to pay people back.

From buisness people to consumers to media Atari had alot of fences to mend.

  12. I hate to say the other guy was right, but he was....Nothing personal but why would anyone want to pay for Jag rom's for the computer. Very few of the Jag games were exclusives, and even then the Jag Controller would be hard to mimic on the computer. I would say the best bet for your average Jag consumer would be that CF thing that everyone is talking about if you could download roms into that and play them on the Jag then that is an option....or If I had the option on the Nintendo Wii I could see paying to download.

The point as I see it is I will buy NBA JAM for $20 to $50 because it is cool that it came out that good on the JAG and I get a cart and a box(for collecting purposes it means alot)...but pay to download it when I could find the arcade perfect version elsewhere on the internet....I can't imagine doing that.

Most of the better games on the Jag were already released by Atari for the PC or Saturn/PS1...the 16 bit titles were almost exact copies from their 16 bit counter parts...then their are the games that were awful and only made the little bit of money that they did because if you have a jag and you are a collector then you will buy every game made for the system.

On the other hand w/ this same argument I could see buying some of these titles from the Vrtual console by Wii only because some people out their may want to experience the system they never owned....I bought some TG-16 games that I would of never purchased for this very reason.

I know that I am rambling but all in all I can not see people purchasing these as computer roms....

  13. On one end I agree that releasing the Panther in 1991 would of worked Sega had 1 main dog they were after and that was Nintendo they based all of their marketing campins on the fact that their system was faster and better than nintendo, They made a mascot Sonic that was prety much an NES Mario game that moved at the speed of light. Atari/Panther would of been released with the same 5 games that Jag was released w/ which were Cavedudes/ Raiden/ Trevor McFur/ some sort of Cybermorph game?/ and a racing game of some sorts"Checkerd Flag" w/ minus the polygons. That would of been OK but they still would of been killed in the USA for 2 reasons, they did not have a sports game dept., (EA's deal w/ Sega both hurt the Sega Sports line and saved the Genesis) and they did not have a mascot.

Making a space shooter something the 2600 had tons of w/ better graphics was the one thing Atari could do, taking your Realsports line and updating the graphics would not be enouth. The early 90's you had to have 3 to 4 game types to survive Mascot games(Atari had no clue how to make theses), Sports games(other than RBI Baseball in the early 90's this was another thing Atari was lost<granted it would be one of the easier categories to enter at this time since contract sports teams and names was a new thing>, Fighting games (Sega gained a foothold on the market simply for having blood in MK1, SNES gained momentum for being the only place to play Street Fighter 2 for a year<this is another place Atari would fail unless they had gained a big foothold on the market Sega/NES would pay $$ to keep atari from making SF2 or MK1 on their system and without these games Atari would die as soon as the magazines posted this, also Atari sucked at making Fighters example Kasaumi Ninja., the 4th category assuming Atari still owned the rights to all the arcade conversions made for the lynx, if they took these same games and gave them grafix, sound overhalls then this is a category Atari would actualy have a chance in.

To this day I can't believe that Atari didn't pressue these game Titles for the Jag, I'm sure some idiot in research said that kids hated Lynx so don't use any of those titles on the Jag unless you intend to butcher them (Checkerd Flag/Blue Lightning)

  14. It's all supply in demand...basic economics. GoAtari must be close to the end of the line on the inventory of Jag stuff. Think about it they have been trying to pettle their products for what like 8-9 yrs for a dead system that stopped producing new product 9 yrs ago. It is very much a surprice that they are still in buisness selling mostly new in the box product, or odds and ends that Atari was going to toss. Back a couple of years ago their prices were better. But, obviously, their has been a small resurgence in the Jag for the last 2 years and they are going to take advantage of that. If their prices suddenly drop it will be for 1 of two reasons the 1st would never happen but(goatari builds a plant to produce an extra 100 or so carts of every title and they have found a way to mass produce in a way that they can make each title for $5 or less and still charge $20 or more plus shipping while they are at it they start making combo Jag/JagCD w/ the same advertising campain from the 80's "THE FUN IS BACK OF ATARI UNDER 50 BUCKS..50 BUCKS!!!")...that would be supply increasing demand goes down price goes down....or they have a big clearance sale and go under getting out of a buisness that they should of cut tail and ran out of many years ago.

So at least their is a retailer that if I have to get a copy of Atari Carts and I can't find it elsewhere, I know they have it, it will be new in a box, and they have a return policy. While their prices are on the high side you always get stuff from them in good shape and most of the time in a timely manner

  15. Yeah but a majority of the good games on 3D0 where from 1 company EA. Atari only had one big company making games and that was Atari. Truth is though N64 games looked as good or beter than anything 3D0 made and it was a cartige based machine just like Atari, so to me not being CD is not a good excuse, besides Atari was CD towards the end and it still did not bring us Madden, FIFA, Need for Speed, Road Rash, or even games equivilant. Back in the day I would of said Atari was the winner because 3DO had a large majority of their 200+ games were either bad or unplayable. Atari's advantage today is that 3D0 has not aged well and state of the art games are not as impressive as they once were

  16. I was told by 1 of my 20 yr old employees that she only plays old school systems like the Sega Genesis. Think we now are hitting generations that never played the 2600 or the NES and Sega/SNES was their intro to gaming....makes you feel old

  17. Back when Jag was originaly released it would of been the way to go because Atari could of Advertised the Jaguar as having over 75 games made for their new system but Atari retardedly droped Lynx, 7800, and XE line of games and support when the Jag. came out so that they could focuss all resources on making the Jag a success. Of course releasing a devise that would help sell a backlog of games from your old system would of at least kept their retailers happy the way Wii has helped to sell a back log of dead Game Cube items....but Atari was to focused on their JAG CD and the 5 games the were developing for it, because CD's were so cheap to make so everyone would support it

  18. I don't know about best but in the top 10, I bought the game recently for a friend so that he would get back into the Jag sceen. Last time he came by I was trying to show off Protector and some of the newer games then he just popped in Wolf, he claims it was the best version ever released, I told him that the same could be said w/ Kasaumi Ninja.

  19. The Up-All-Night segments were cheap and at least they went with a somewhat mainstream game "Temptest"...It was better than an infomercial and made it seem like a contest that USA was running.

Atari did need to advertise to parents to get their machine sold, then advertise to kids to make their machine a hit, Atari only had a few games at the time that were good enouth to warrent advertising and they were all violent as all get out Doom, AvsP, Wolf 3D, Kausami, could make good 30 minute spots but what parent was going to buy a system that made only violent games. Sega was smart enouth to turn their system around w/ 1 game and that was Sonic the Hedghog, he was cute like Mickey Mouse only he had and attitude, then they focussed on sports, yes Mortal Kombat was their savior but that was just 1 of many games on the system.

Atari actualy made very cool looking ads but they did not work because I assume they costed so much to make that they didn't have any money left over to advertise. If you look at today the reason everyone wants a Wii is because the advertisement makes it look like being fun for the hole family.

What could they of changed I guess make the system come w/ an easier version of Bubsy or Temptest. Then work to make Raymon an exclusive and change to him when he comes out.

Seriously go rewatch the ads from Atari none of them would make a parent buy one.

  20. also The Virtua Boy was originaly made as a system that you could move around w/ but Nintendo lawyers for good reason made them add arms and make the system heavier plus added a power cord so you had to lean into the system to play it. It was uncomfortable and you were paying $200 for this discomfort, also red on black didn't work, to figure Atari already had out a VR hement w/ better design near the same price point...if Atari would of presuded that instead of the CD unit, imagine the posabilities

  21. The reason the 3D0 wins the battle in the gamers mind is because they had EA in their back pocket. Which was great. Need for Speed, Road Rash, FIFA, John Madden, all sports games on the 3D0 for the time were the best you could buy on any console and it showed, compare Madden to Troy Aikman or even brutal sports. Compare Need for Speed w/ Checkerd Flag, Club Drive, World Tour. Which would you rather play. 3D0 games always had great graphics and great sound(most games had real music for real bands). The only problem alot of 3D0 games had was lag time in control, because it was a cd based game.

Do I think Jaguar could of been beter than 3DO, of course, you say Atari was rushing games down the pike but when I bought mine durring the 1st year, games trickled out about 1 or 2 a month making purchasing a bad game or substandard game even worst. At the time a sub standard fighting game was exceptable because I had to have a 64 bit fighting game. But when you go to your local Electronic Boutique to find Trevor McFur, A vs P, Checkerd Flag, DD5, Dino Dudes, and Iron Soldier. You already have Iron Soldier, Avs P, Cyber Morph, and Temptest 2K ;so you know what to expect then you start buying the other games out at the time and you start to get a bad taste for the Jag you look over at the 3D0 and see that their are already 50+ games out for it.

Atari should of been more hands on got out the developement kits, play test their games fixed problems before the games came out...you guys will say that then the games wouldn't of came out as fast ...quote the games did not come out fast in any way another month or 2 to fix the bugs would of saved the system and most bad games...also why did Atari not seek out their brother Tengen/Time Warner and give them an early peak at the system so that the Jag could have an early version of Primal Rage, Pit Fighter 2, Hard Drivin, Race Drivin, or any of the arcade games at the time obviously atari was able to get the licenses for the Lynx.

  22. Yeah the man slave thing was just part of her character she would be on 1 week and Gilbert Gothery would be on the next they would host B-rate movies on Sat night after Weird Science/Duck Man hour.

Weird Sceince did show a Jag in use it was a St. Claire production same as Parker Lewis Cant Loose, the Dad (the guy from Son of The Beach/Dick Deitrick) owned a video store that sold/rented all video games but Atari had very big banners for Jaguar/Lynx stuff their was even an episode dedicated to the nerdy guy being adicted to video Games/ they cured him bulldosed all the games then at the end gave him a Lynx and said in moderation video Games are OK.

Back in the day USA was a great network Bad movies/WWF/Wings/Cartoon Express/Just the 10 of US/Weird Sceince/Duck Man...even in the late 90's when they would air USAM (comedies that bombed on NBC plus Wings)and 10 hours of Walker Teaxas Ranger/Jag reruns.

Now I can't remeber when the last time I wached USA.

  23. Yeah if I remeber correctly nintendo has always made all their money by charging companies a commision for making their games basicly to get the seal of approval Acclaim would take their game to Nintendo then Nintendo would Charge Acclaim so much money to manufacture the game for them using all official parts charging them something like $5 to $15 a cart to produce them then Acclaim would take that same cart and mark it up to $30 to $45 to make a profit.

This is why Nintendo had so many lawsuits against them in the 80's (this and other rules).

Well Nintendo and Sony were making a deal to make basicaly a SNES with a double speed CD-Rom on top so they could compete w/ Sega and NEC oen CD rom buisness. I guess Nintendo didn't know how to mass produce optical CD Roms and NEC (turbo-16) was actualy winning the game war in Japan and Sega was #1 in America. The deal gave sony basicaly all the rights Nintendo would normaly get and gave NES a small comision per game.

When the big dogs at NES found out they were upset and at the 11th hour they made a quick side deal w/Phillips to make the system then announced at the Electronics show. With no warning to Sony.

This actualy worked out for Sony because their sailure made them stronger. Also if the Sega CD games were any indication of the games that would of been made for the SNES-CD then it was wise to be able to fail on Sega's name rather than Sony's name.

Also Sony lucked out because in the next 3 years they were able to look a (Sega-CD, CD-i, and 3Do) and figure out what not to do on a CD-Based system, and look at the success of 3-D based games in the Arcade to know that 3-D not FMV was the way to steer the system.

Think about it the move to be a 3-D only system is the reason that Saturn was a failure, Sega throwing extra 3-D chips in a system that nobody knew how to use, Sega the people that invented 3-D fighting w/ VR Fighter killed by Sony's Toshiden.
