  1. What Tod told me is that he was told it was to be a 4K game, so he coded it that way. He said that towards the end he'd come up with a nice kernel for 8K, but management didn't want to go to 8K (probably for reasons of cost) so he was stuck with 4K. He brought up Ms. Pac-Man, saying something to the effect of "of course it looks better; they were able to use 8K, but I wasn't".

  3. Thanks to all who've allowed permission... The only problem will be when I get to fit them in, and how many (as I'd also like to cover the Mental Kombat and Gunfight contests too). Given these, and some other label art I have, I'm tempted to put out a nice thick special issue... The problem is, I'm gunshy about color, especially since they're all on the web site for those readers that have access. BTW, for anyone who's not familiar with me or the 2600 Connection, 26C is a print zine that Tim Duarte started in the Summer of 1990; I took over editing chores after #50, and though I'm always behind schedule (grr!), I've done 18 issues so far. The thing is, I love this sort of thing -- what was once just a consumer good (though an important one to my childhood :-) is now pop culture. I love seeing the loving attention people give it, like people making almost 100 different labels for a contest to label a cartridge made almost 25 years after the system was first released. As it should be!

StanJr -- sorry to worry you there man... Please note however that I'm not lazy with CAPITALIZATION, so if I said the Golden Shower video, it's different than a golden shower video. :-)
  5. There's some awesome stuff here people! Kudos to all who entered. Of course, I've gotta ask again -- anyone mind/not mind if I print these in 2600 Connection? (I doubt I'll have room for them all, sadly; don't know what to do about that).
  6. I'm sure I'll print it eventually... So you've probably got time to re-write it a bit if you want, no problem.
  7. Wow, I should have gotten back sooner... King Atari, the Battlebots game I mention couldn't have been on that CD -- it's a "board" game (actually foldout paper board, not big pressed cardboard).
  8. Dude, find somebody with a digital camera or a working scanner. I definitely want to see that cartridge... Who makes it be the way? Is it Konami?

Moycon, that Pitfall Matrix thing seems to have ripped off the Golden Shower video...
  10. Since the other topic is closed, I thought I'd write something here... Congrats, Jess (mneko) on the Kabul mention in the Entertainment Weekly article. Aren't you glad now that I talked you into doing it?

If I had a prototype, I'd leak it out, and still be content in the knowledge that I had the only "real" copy out there. You're missing the point... If he releases it, someone could make up a copy of his proto and then he WOULDN'T have the only "real" copy out there. At least as far as he and everyone else besides the hoaxer knows. He doesn't want that to happen. And again, it doesn't matter what you or I think -- it's what HE thinks. That's why I've been trying to work with him to figure out a way to release it without compromising his position.
  12. King_Asmo wrote: quote: I think a 2600 Battle Bots game would be really cool. Actually, has anyone seen the little strategy game called Battlebots (before the TV show too)? I was thinking a couple weeks back that it might be doable on the 2600, though I haven't taken a close look at it yet, and don't have any 2600 programming experience yet anyway.
  13. I don't think he's interested in selling it, but I can pass on an offer if you want. I tend to agree with what the rest of you guys are saying -- it's still worth it, he should get it dumped for posterity, etc, but I'm not him. Luckily he did give some conditions which we MIGHT be able to meet. That's more than we get with some, so I'm going to work on doing what I can.
  14. I'm going to disagree on the Space Invaders front... Although the 2600 cart is marvelous, I still prefer the arcade version for one big reason -- the adrenaline rush. The home version just can't match the building thumps of the arcade version...
  15. Albert wrote: quote: I don't believe the value of a prototype diminishes just because the ROM is released. In this case, the owner would STILL have the only known original copy of Pink Panther and there are many people who would pay quite handsomely for it. Will this is true, how does he PROVE that he has the original? He could sell it to a rich, silent buyer and make a copy for himself and "still have the original". Or at least that's something people could accuse him of if he can't prove it absolutely. I did point out that it's documented in 2600 Connection that he was the finder of it. He's reasonably comfortable with that, but still has some fears about it. quote: Certainly if the owner never gets the ROM dumped and the EPROM goes bad, the prototype will be worth considerably less (IMHO). I've definitely brought that up, and I think he's amenable to having it dumped, but is afraid it would leak out eventually anyway. I mean, there are guys out there you can trust, but he's not sure how to get the game to them in a way that doesn't make him nervous. And he's still not sure about trusting them, as I don't think he's had as much contact with the guys I know can be trusted. quote: As for the legal issues, well, I'm not going to go there, except to say that I wouldn't lose any sleep over them. Nor would I, but the owner might. Look at it this way, no one is likely to give a rat's ass, but would you want to be the first hobbyist to get sued over releasing something like that? "Too pricey to risk" is not an unreasonable position.

  17. > Good Luck Charlie Brown The owner had agreed to have the game dumped at a gamer's get-together but couldn't make it. I've since lost contact, or he isn't answering my occasional emails. It was iffy as to whether he was going to allow the ROM to be released, but he wasn't against dumping it. > Pink Panther The owner of this one has two concerns: 1) keeping the value of his original (which I think could be maintained by a small hack on the released ROM), and 2) legal issues. I was starting to track down the legal side of it but ran into a wall of sorts. I'm still hopefully, but have been too busy to pursue closely. > The Impossible Game I think this is on lists because of either a) Leonard seeing it at an old CES (can you confirm that Leonard?), b) that C64 Ken Uston puzzle game, and/or c) the interview with Alex DeMeo in EG (I think) that talks about it and makes it sound real. I don't think I've heard any rumors about it's existence in the modern day though. > Rush Hour Well, the box turned up and the source code may still exist, but I haven't heard about a ROM yet. I might be slightly at fault with the last two, as they've been on my want list for years and years, and sometimes want lists can imply legitimacy...
  18. Now now, I see women all the time, but that shirt sounds new to me. I really meant that I want to see the shirt. Of course, if she's hot...
  19. You MAY have problems with heat, but if you have a 2600 Jr, you can put the NES on the TV and the 2600 on the NES. That won't take up too much space. Other than that, you can always keep some stuff boxed until you want to use -- only keep one or two systems hooked up at any given time. The rest can be stacked in a corner somewhere.
  20. Has anyone ripped one apart to see what's inside? Is it at least still a 6502 machine, or is it something entirely different? (Probably it's one covered chip with ROM & RAM built in, but you never know...)
  21. "Imp" might be Demons To Diamonds, or maybe Demon Attack?
  22. Hey, -^Cro§Bow^-, how about a pic of your wife's shirt?
  23. Time for a poll... What color are people's 10-In-1s? The ads showed it to be lime green, but I got a yellow one and a know a guy who got a grey one. What others are there?

    dynacom

If I remember correctly, Dynacom is a Brazilian company and sold games there only. Someone from Europe can better comment on if they sold there...
  25. In the phonetic alphabet "i" is pronounced as "ee". Now, I don't know if Greek is phonetic. Hmm, but if "chi" should be pronounced like "she", then the proper pronunciation of XP approaches "zero". Heh heh... (PS -- dig the "(Mac OS)XP(lagiarism)" suggestion :-)
