  1. Scott: find the Osama/Kabul thread -- the problem is that the emulator doesn't recognize the game once you've changed it. But there are apparently ways to set up the particular emulators to recognize new games.

Or just BIN2WAV it and run it into the Cuttle Cart...

  2. Has anybody made a new Stella profile entry for Kabul?

I've been looking into the profile file... Why are there four Activision entries for Kaboom? Are there really four different ROMs?

Also, I assume the "MD5" is a checksum -- is there a way of computing these on a Mac with OS8.6?

  3. I have to ring in for the book version of the DP Guide, but I've also suggested to Joe a few times to do smaller volumes with more focus: Classic era consoles, classic era computers, Nintendo-era consoles, 16-bit era consoles. Perhaps add handhelds/electronic games, arcade games, pong/dedicated games, or others for other volumes.

Also, remember Joe, you mention the old Monster Manual as an example of the binder principle, but the OLD Monster Manuals were books. ;-) Maybe you're just saying that it'll eventually be spiral bound, and then Wizards of the Coast will buy you out?

Actually, think about old D&D modules -- relatively thin and could be laid flat, but still looked "professionally" bound. Yet you can have them three-hole punched to fit binders. Hmm... Nice compromise?

Of course, I'm waiting for the "Ultimate Guide" where the 2600 list comes on a 2600 cartridge, the Vectrex list on a Vectrex cartridge, etc. (^_^)

  4. The ad was by Atari2600.com, but as another thread says, their site might be spotty at the moment (I just tried and can't get in).

I don't have the issue handy, but if anyone does, post the phone number.

Of course, the sale price is for 2600 Connection readers, so if any of you guys order, I'll expect a subscription check if you're not already subscribers. ;-)

I think you might be a little confused...

    NTSC is a TV format

    VHS is a videotape format

    They work fine together.

Did you mean you can only read PAL or SECAM, or can only use Beta videotapes?

  6. The Pitfall III story is told in Lore in the DP Collectors Guide, I think volume 4.

I also had a picture of it in an early issue of 2600 Connection (my run, so post #50).

But there was ANOTHER Pitfall III that turned up IIRC, and I don't remember an explanation of that one.

  7. I have a slightly older TV... I have the Dreamcast or Nuon going into the VCR, and the VCR into the TV via a coax connection A/B switch, and my RF box into the other coax. So for VCR or modern system it's as is (but I have to hit LINE2 on the VCR remote for games), or I do have to switch the A/B selector for the Atari.

That multisystem plug is probably best for multiple items.

Man, there was a time where I had quite a loop of wires... I had a set up where I could get the TV signal on either TV or my computer (TV card built in), so I could technially watch two things at once and tape another. Then, I had the VCR set up to run into either (I could watch it on TV, or computer -- for screenshots). Plus, I had an RF box going in so I could watch the game on TV, or tape it (though I don't think I could play directly onto the computer -- had to go through the VCR, which at least was possible to do). At the time I didn't use the aux ports on the VCR, but that would have just meant that I could have hooked up two more systems at the same time. :-) Man, though, once I took all that apart to move, I haven't quite gotten it all up again...

  8. I think the problem becomes "where to draw the line"... Some games they just changed a few graphics, maybe blocked out the Activision logo, etc. But some, while very different games, have an obvious start from another game. I can't think of perfect example right now, but isn't Farmyard Fun essentially based on Freeway? And wasn't some game based on Pengo, but doesn't really play like Pengo anymore?

I was once going to add some descriptions to my game lists to cover these cases, but I never got around to it. I would just list:

    Pirate Game X (S Activision Game Y)

...where the "S" meant "similar". I had meant to add qualifiers to it like "S:GR" for "similar -- but with hacked graphics" and "S:GP" for "similar but with gameplay hacks.

PS: Now that I'm using my Cuttle Cart, I really need to find someone who can mod my 2600 Jr. with an S-Video output. I don't get a great signal coming in through my ATI All-In-Wonder card. I want the nice, clean output that I saw running at Chad's booth at CGE.

Chris Wilkson is working on an add-on board to do a direct AV out. He's currently swamped with school stuff but hopes to get it going over Christmas break. I'm looking forward to getting one.

  10. In a nutshell, and remembering that I'm NOT a lawyer...

If you use a trademarked term, you CAN be sued. Does that mean it will happen? Probably not, but you never know.

If you use code from a copyrighted program, you CAN be sued. Does that mean it will happen? Less likely yet, but possibly.

There is also the possibility of a "look and feel" copyright lawsuit, but this seems pretty unlikely too.

Most likely though, is that if anybody even notices, and further, cares, they will send a cease and desist letter. That's a lot cheaper than a lawsuit anyway. That actually happened to Bob Colbert for his Stell-A-Sketch program -- Ohio Art found out about it somehow and told him to stop. The didn't sue.

Of course, I don't know why they even bothered to waste the stamp. It's not like Bob was making any money on those, or claiming their trademark or anything. Yeesh.

  11. I don't think Al has a website, but before the net/web was big this guy already had all kinds of bizarre far east & south american pirate carts. Not to mention that some of the grails we still chase, he's had forever. He may or may not have the biggest 2600 collection (Marco might have him beat, for instance), but it's surely an impressive, enviable one.
