I would like to upgrade the ram in my 1200xl to at least 256K. From searching these forums and elsewhere on the internet, I gather that there are many different ways to do this. I'm wondering:
1) Are certain upgrades only compatible with software written for that upgrade?
2) Is there a preferred method?

How many units are being produced in this current batch? I'm all for pre-ordering one. I've already sent a PM off to Albert. I don't want to miss this opportunity.
42

I know I signed up on a list a while back- PLEASE make sure I'm still on that list. I really want one of these too!

Is this a great age or what! We've got sio2pc, sio2sd, myIDE, and now sio2cdrom! sio2playerpianorolls anyone...? Seriously, that's very cool- I would get an old 1050 and make a front loading cdrom drive out of it.

I got into the 8bit scene primarily to learn what I should have learned back in the 80's- programming and electronics. At that time, I was only interested in playing games and such. My daughters get a kick out of playing games like Archon and Zork.

Looking for parts to swap into my dead 600xl. Prefer just the motherboard so I can swap chips.

Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! (said banging hand against forehead). Figured out at last how I fried my sio2pc: by omitting one of the connectors from my shortened sio cable and soldering the wires to the corresponding pins on the 1050's sio port, I unwittingly, but effectively eliminated the crossover that takes place between opposing ends of an sio cable. My connections were, therefore, all backwards. Since pins 10 (+5v) and pin 2 (Gnd) are opposite each other on sio connector, polarity was unfortunately reversed. My poor sio2pc didn't stand a chance.

Metalguy66: Your talking to a guy who just blew up his sio2pc. To answer your question, I have no idea...
Steve: Thanks for the schematic- now for the million dollar stupid question of the year: Is the sio pinout shown in the schematic the same as on the sio connector on the 1050?
P.S. Steve, I just ordered another sio2pc from your website- the terminal version this time so that should simplify things.

I'm in the process of installing my atarimax sio2pc (usb) inside the back of my 1050. I cut a short section of sio cable so that I can simply plug one end of the cable into the sio2pc and I would like to solder the wires from the other end to the sio connector pins on the bottom of the 1050 pcb. My first try resulted in disaster- fried my sio2pc. Now I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out where I went wrong before I order another sio2pc. I wired it so that pin 1 on the sio2pc is wired to pin one on the 1050 sio connector, like this:
1050 SIO2PC
1 ------------------------------------------ 1
2 -----------------------------------------2
3 ---------------------------------------------3
4 -----------------------------------------4
etc...
Thoughts, comments, ridicule... any and all input is welcome.

I have another question for the programmer:Why did he accept such a bad printing? Where all labels misprinted like this one?
By 1983 standards, that was probably pretty good. I'm sure that cost was the main factor as to what quality labels he used.
-
Where do you see the TM. I am looking at the cartridge and do not see it?Behind the text "Red Sea Crossing", hardly noticable in red.
On the end label or the main label? I still don't see it. Can you narrow the area down? I must be blind!
I see it, it's on the end label in darker red than the main lettering.

Question for all of the serious collectors out there: say I get lucky somedday and find a suspected one-of-a-kind cart. What would be an acceptable method of openning it to be able to show people the inside? Someone suggested using a heat gun to remove the label but I think that would still be risking a tear. Wouldn't it be better to cut a small slit around the screw- just enough to get the screw out but small enough to simply press the label back in place? How much would that cut affect value?
Oh, and I agree, if this programmer suddenly starts getting hammered with telephone calls and emails from gobs of people, he's likely to clam up. He does have a day job afterall.

Within the past year, I've managed to acquire one of each of the xl computers, starting with an 800xl, followed by a 600xl and most recently a 1200xl. Of the three, I agree the 1200xl is the best looking. But the 600xl has it's own charm due to its small size.

I agree, go with the disk drive. Inevitably, the glitch is always in the last 5 seconds of a 15 minute load.
I found a bunch of 5.25 disks at the local hardware store (the owner used to have a radio shack franchise and still had piles of old inventory in a back room). He gave me two 10 packs of disks for free just to get rid of them. Lots of old Tandy computer peripherals (joysticks, etc) if anyone's into TRS80 stuff. -
SIO2PC works fine with the 1200xl. I can't test my 1050 with it until I get a second power supply, but since the sio2pc works, it would seem the sio2sd doesn't like something about the 1200xl. Like I said, I know my sio2sd works because it works with my 800xl.When I boot the 1200xl with the sio2sd attached, I get a blue screen with a cursur and a lower case "k" in the upper left corner of the screen. The display on the sio2sd starts counting for a second but then stops.
Sounds like it's trying to load the config menu. Is your SD card set up correctly?
Played with it some more tonight and now it doesn't work with my 800xl either. Go figure. When I turn on the computer, it counts to $0003 and then returns to "D1:$52® $0000" and a letter "k" appears in the upper left of my monitor. No matter what files I try to load or what drive number I set it to I get the exact same thing. If I boot holding the "K4" key, instead of going into startup mode, the LCD displays "ERROR" which flashes twice then goes back to the regular display. I'm using a 1gig SD card formatted to FAT and I created a folder entitled "ATARI" which contains a few .atr files that worked before. I put the 32k sio2sd.bin file on the root directory just like before. I'm about to give up and go back to floppy disks.

Anyone else have trouble using SIO2SD on a 1200xl? After adding +5VDC to the SIO, I tried it today with Atariwriter cartridge and an SD card with an ATR file containing DOS files, but I get "device not present" when I try to load a file. The same setup works fine on my 800xl so I'm wondering if this is a 1200xl issue.Could you try that 1200XL with sio2PC or with a real atari diskdrive?

Just received mine in the mail today. Don't have a power supply yet so I can't test it. From the tag on the back: Made in U.S.A. Serial Number: 83S DA 001855. There is a "073" stamped in ink in the lower right corner of the tag.Reading back over the posts in this thread, I interpret the "073" to mean Jan 7th 1983 date of production. This would appear to be the second oldest recorded here thus far.
Doesn't the 073 mean 7th week of 1983?
Yeah, you're right. That would put it's date of manufacture in February. Any idea what the writing on the motherboard might mean?

After reading some more about the 1200xl sio port, it seems mine already should have had +5v at the sio port because there was a 1ohm resister at R63 (apparently some 1200xl's had nothing at R63 requiring a jumper to be soldered in place). However, even with the resistor in place, the SIO2SD didn't work - the lcd display came on but it was dim and wouldn't boot anything. I soldered in a jumper to bypass the resistor and now the SIO2SD works.

I haven't tried this myself, but one of the Apple II guys I know used hydrogen peroxide to clear up some case yellowing. You'll have to wait a generation or two to find out exactly what "DNA damage" you've suffered if you don't wear gloves...

-
Good idea. I'll try it tonight and see what happens.

Openned up my 1200xl today to add +5v to the SIO and found the words "Auto ENSP D.10" handwritten in black magic marker across the front on the large silver boarder of the pcb where the press-rivits go through. On the bottom of the pcb is a bright red-orange circular sticker (about 3/4" diameter) stamped with an octagon boarder and inside is:
Mod QA
W78
MSP
20
Not exactly sure about the 2nd and 3rd lines of the stamp because they are smeared.
The pcb is marked C060585 REV 13A . ATARI c 1982. Above that it says MC4VO 4882.
The only other markings are a yellow circular sticker on the top of the large 16V capacitor on which is handwritten "IST PASSED"
All chips are socketed.

Here's my thought. Tell me if I'm nuts. (others already have). If a cartridge connection could be made that incorporated some sort of "pass through" to the 8bit's RAM, one could assemble a binary, save it to a certain portion of RAM and the VCS would think it's reading a ROM when it would actually be reading the 8bit's RAM. That would allow changes to the binary to be made without changing any hardware.
-
Sorry, can't let this die just yet. So if VCS emulation isn't possible (or even practical) on an 8bit, what about the concept of something akin to SIO2VCS, where the 8bit acts basically as a large cartridge. That would allow writing the code and assembling the binary on an 8bit and immediately testing it out on a VCS without having to burn eproms. (These are the kinds of crazy thoughts that course through my mind sometimes).

You overestimate my sophistication regarding these matters. I'm simply a sucker for any new gadget that comes along.
My ever-evolving goal is to set up my 1200xl to be as stand-alone as possible, but still have near instant access to downloads from the internet. I see this as being most practically possible by using sio2sd and myIDE. Sio2sd allows easy transfer from my pc (i.e, internet) to my Atari without an ugly cord (please understand, wife hates ugly cords. Too many and the whole setup is history!). I haven't yet done this, but my understanding is that I can then transfer files from the sio2sd to myIDE harddrive and select programs right from the Atari. I can then keep the sio2sd tucked neatly away until I need to transfer more programs or I might even consider installing it internally.
Getting back to this sio2cd setup, I just think the maker of this items deserves praise for the mere "doing of it".
