  1. I had a chance to play the game. It's a fun arcade racer. By far the best NFS I've played on the Wii. It doesn't look like a PS2/Gamecube game, it's obvious the game was designed from the ground up for the Wii not for a lesser system or ported down from a system with more horsepower. I hope we see more games like this. It's not the best racing game I've ever played, but it's fun and that is more than I can say about the recent installments of NFS on the Wii or various other platforms. I think it's safe to say it is in the top few racers for the Wii. I haven't played it long enough to write anything else, but if anyone who doesn't have it needs a question answered I will do my best to help you.
  2. Interesting opinions, but with the Wii, unless the review is 1.0 or 10.0 you can't judge. I should have this by tomorrow and decide for myself.
  3. I really love the industrial look of the XL series, especially the 1200xl. Best looking classic computer, but I am biased since I wanted one so bad! I don't think the Amiga (despite being an awesome computer on the inside) was on the same cosmetic level as the XL's. The only Amiga I thought looked cool was the A3000 which I lusted after, but my feelings were perhaps clouded by what it could do. I think the complaints about the XE/ST design is easy to make nowadays. They have a very 80's look that looks dated now compared to the XL's, the 400/800 series reminds me of Star Wars and roller skating, but that is because they belong in the 70's. I guess you need to put on some old school heavy metal and have yourself a new coke to wash down the look of the 130XE properly. back to the original topic. I was just on Atari Museum and couldn't find the Amiga-Atari design this thread was advertising. Has it been posted yet? I might of been looking in the wrong place. Please post a direct link if possible! Thanks!!
  4. okay all interesting responses so far, could you guys take a look at this article I just read and tell me if you think it's worth trying : http://hem.bredband.net/corail/nesfix/index.html
  5. I helped someone get their computer running again, no big deal but they gave me a box of "video game junk" they were about to throw away 2 NES's, 1 nes power supply, 2 nes controllers, 1 PS1, 2 gamecube controllers, and one of those plug n play Ms Pac Mans that doesn't work. Everything was covered in a disgusting layer of dust that gave me allergies just looking at it. I cleaned the NES's up and powered them on. They both have the blinking red light and screen. I understand this is an easy fix (replace the 72pin cart connector). I've also read it's possible to bend the pins out so that the old connector works. I had a NES back in the day that is long gone and I decided not to collect for it since I have so many other ways of playing NES games these days (GBA/DS emulators, Virtual Console, and so on), so I haven't dealt with any old original Nintendo's since they were new and have no idea about anything. My questions to those of you that have been down this road are first should I even try the bend the pins thing? It sounds tedious and I am skeptical it will work. If anyone has ever successfully done it then I would be willing to give it a shot. Where is the best (aka cheapest) place I can get 2 72 pin connectors if I need to go route? Is it possible the blinking lights/screens could indicate another problem? Any advice is appreciated, guys, so please advise away.
  6. You could be right, but this is how I look at it. Yes, it may be possible to somehow keep DSi only games locked out, but how they can keep games that play on the DS/DS Lite from running off a flash? It seems any kind of piracy check that keeps a flash cart from running will eventually be hacked and anything else (constantly updating the firmware to fight off the current generation of carts) is again negated by two things: Flash cards are cheap and for 10 bucks you can buy a new one that works and they cost like 50 cents to make in China so there will always be teams working to fight Nintendo at each stage of their defense. I don't see Nintendo being able to do much about the current piracy efforts that will last with hardware/firmware but that is with the DS. One look at the PS3 and it's obvious if you design a system from the get-go to fight off the pirates it's possible to keep them at bay.. and not the pirate bay lol (sorry dumb joke) I imagine the ease at which the Wii and DS systems can be modded will be addressed in Nintendo's next generation console/handhelds platforms. I have a DSL but I never had a problem with the DSi's lack of GBA compatibility. I have a GBA SP2 and to me it is perfect for GBA/GB games so I never play them on my DSL, but if I do buy a Dsi xl someday, I know I would love to play GBA games on those big screens!!
  7. How many of those emulators actually run well, though? NES, Atari 2600 and original Gameboy/most Gameboy color run fine. I have tried just about every emulator on the DS and unless you are really forgiving (I'm not) Genesis, TG16, SNES, Atari 8bit, C64 etc are for 95% of the games too slow. I don't get the argument anyway, so you love your DS Lite with a flash card(it's great I agree) but you will be able to get a flash card for the DS XL too... As far as the screens they are not just going to be bigger. Yesterday they announced the screens will be viewable from any angle, so they will be brighter and sharper. I have a feeling all this skepticism regarding the screens making the games look worse is unwarranted.
  8. Most consumers weren't asking for larger screens, they wanted longer battery life. That's why the handheld with the worst screen won. Oh and they also wanted Pokemon! The new DSi LL has longer battery life. Here are the differences: 50% heavier than the DSi. Lasts an extra 1-3 more hours after charging. Bigger touch screens (4.2") and stylus pen. The DSi LL or XL will be released in North America/Europe Q1 2010
  9. what alternate reality are you from? Gameboy reigned supreme in the handheld market, putting down all their competition: Lynx, PC Express, Gamegear even Nomad...
  10. Here is a picture that illustrates the difference (DSLL vs DSi). You are right the new DS is pretty big. One negative I see is the size. When I work in the Summer for the Parks and Recs department. They send me to a boat launch and there is a lot of down time. I usually bring a book and slip my GBA SP in my pocket. I rarely take the DS light because it's too bulky to slip into my pocket. This new DS, while it will probably be a pleasure to look at especially outside is way too big to be portable.
  11. I think it's inevitable they will make DSi-only games, but I wouldn't worry too much. The installed base of DS lights will keep most developers concentrating on games that work on both. I imagine it could end up being like how Game Boy Color had those black carts that worked with the old Gameboy, but looked better on the color.
  12. Those of you complaining about the 4" screens magnifying all the defects, I would wait until you actually see the final product. I have a feeling it won't be as terrible as you think. Personally I would love a 4" screen as long as it looks good. Here is a picture:
  13. It's not coming out in NA until sometime in 2010 (probably not until at least 6 months after Christmas) so I wouldn't worry about it. Yes, I understand there is some new piracy protection built in. The current DSi can already lock out flash cards, many of the 1st generation DSi cards don't work with the latest firmware upgrade, but there will always be some way around whatever Nintendo does.
  14. It still displays the same resolution, just bigger screens. Did you know the DSi has a faster cpu than the DS or DSL? There aren't any cart games which take advantage of this yet. Ax, it was confirmed by Nintendo today. The idea behind the larger screens is to sell to older customers who might find the previous screens too small. The others, not sure what the negativity is about? No one is forcing you to buy it and if a new model does come out after you buy one what is the big deal? It doesn't make your model less functional. I had a DS phat until just before the DSi came out, when I bought a DSL. I would like to see a next generation Game boy/DS whatever too, but even if you bought a DS in 2004, 6 years later they are still releasing great games for your handheld, even if they don't make phats anymore.
  15. I am so psyched I didn't get a DSi and stuck with the DSL, because now a DSi with 4" screens is coming out. 4" screens will be nice. Like the original DSi, it is coming out in Japan first, but it will be here sometime in the Summer (I am guessing).
  16. That's a good point. The only things I can think of are: 1. They couldn't get the license again 2. They didn't think Sinistar was a popular enough game (the arcade version is a cult classic, but hardly a popular game) 3. They didn't know it existed Point 3 may sound unbelievable, but remember that Atari Corp. was seriously dysfunctional and didn't know a lot of what happened back in the Atari Inc. days. It's quite possible they didn't even know Sinistar had been done. Tempest I am thinking #3, because even if they couldn't get the license or more likely did not want to pay for it I can see them re-imagining the game and making a Sinistar clone if they knew about it.
  17. Actually due to the incomplete nature of the AI, it's easier. There are some glitches in the computer AI that make enemy ships not hit you as often as they should. Tempest Is the game fun to play in it's current state? Is the long wait (it's been what 4 years or more since it was discovered) because someone is working on finishing Sinistar? Totally. The AI just needs a little 'tweak' to make it perfect. The game was 99% done. Tempest I wanted this game so bad back in the day. I remember reading an article in Analog where they mentioned it was coming out along with the 7800 which was delayed for years. I'm surprised if the game was so close to finished that it didn't end up being a XEGS release.
  18. It's a bit slow for most games and ironically considering it's called Pokey, the sound is very annoying. I wish you could at least turn off the worthless sound to bring the games up to full speed.

  20. Sweet! Too bad my EFA linker died (well still works just won't recognize the USB anymore so whatever is on there now, is on there for good! - Waiting to buy another.. I wonder if there may be a break in the USB connector somewhere. There are four pins and there's a good chance one of them has broken off from the circuit board of the cartridge. Not much help if you don't know how to solder, but it's a thought. Possible, it's hard to tell because the connector is so small. I tried wiggling around the wire a bit, but still can get no light indicating there is any connection. I didn't take it apart yet. Luckily they are much cheaper than they used to be. sorry to add to this off topic discussion, but let me quickly say there is a program for the DS you can load on a slot 1 ds card that will write roms to a slot 2 card. I can't remember the name of it, but Im sure a good search will turn it up. It's designed for this type of situation. I seem to rem it working with the EFA, which is also what I have, however, there are a couple different EFA's out there, so who knows, but it's worth a try. Oh and about these Gorf games for the Jaguar any chance we good get some screenshots or a youtube video?
  21. Not for nothing, but haven't you realized yet that almost every game released for the Wii has some kind of negative undertone in the review? I tend to agree, I think Wii games are knocked off 1/2 a point (on a ten point scale) as a matter of course just for not being HD, and there are some sites/mags that consistently underrate Wii games. But you have to do a lot of fudging and adjusting to a 41%. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has noticed the Wii bias and you are right, the 10% off because the Wii is not "cool" or doesn't have HD doesn't condemn a game, but this game is unique and has a unique control scheme with a much slower pace than your average modern gamer is used too. Anotherwords you either get what they were going for in this game or you don't. I think most reviewers don't get it, that said most of the people that read the reviews probably wouldn't get it either, so in a round about way they are doing right by their readers. I liked it, but I am open to new and old ideas whether they be in game play, pacing, story, control etc YMMV.

  23. I have Astroboy and I played it last night. Let me start by saying I am a fan of the GBA game. The Wii game is not really a sequel but it's a good game. It's not great, but I would say B- or C+ depending on your POV. It has side scrolling shooter, 2d platforming (or 2.5d whatever) and beat-em up elements. It's a pretty slick little game. Astroboy is a bit too forgiving for a game of it's type, I never ran out of lives on my first try I just got tired of playing, but I wasn't on the hardest skill level either.
