  1. thanks folks,

    i took a decision.

Being in the store I entertained the thought of getting a PSP. But its too big.

I had a closer look at the DS and its games - I really dont like the stylus thingy. Dont wanna play games PDA-like. Maybe its quite different from PDA but its already too different from old school.

I ended up with the Micro. I dont have any GB classic games anymore. I learned that sports is pretty good covered with the main franchises as well as some other highlights.

For now I took Namco Museum and Top spin 2 home.

Does anyone know about the Atari Anniversary cart? I saw it used without description. How does it play?

Excellent choice! My Micro is my second-favorite system of all time behind my Atari 7800 with Cuttle Cart 2. It's that good. You sound like someone who would really like the WarioWare series on the GB Micro (I safely say that because I have yet to find a classic gamer who doesn't like WarioWare on the Game Boy) - check out WarioWare Mini Microgames or WarioWare Twisted.

Thanks for the hint. I will check them out.

  2. Back then I went for the Atari due to my budget. In the store I always played the other systems and somehow I was attracted most to the Master system.

So, with money not an issue I would have opted for the Sega.

I never had the chance to play a 5200. I even cannot recall seeing one in store or maybe I ignored it completely.

From what I know today, back then I rather would have spent my cash on the NES.

The only time I really was up-to-date hardwarewise was with the Amiga 500, the Playstation and also for some time the classic GB.

  3. Hi! I just pulled a bunch of stuff out of my collection to sell at CGE and I need some help pricing some European/Australian stuff. Thanks for any help you can give.

If it helps pricing, both, the Saba Videoplay and the Nordmende Teleplay are official clones of the Fairchild Channel F system, the Nordmende to be said rare though. But probably you know all that and it doesnt help pricing not a bit :D

  4. Okay,

I started my collection with Astroboy. Beautiful game. Feels a lot like Sega.

I will be busy with this one for a while.

But the discussion can go on :)

FPS, what games do we have?

    1. Ecks vs Sever 2 - Sequel to the game based on the worst movie ever reviewed in full by Rotten Tomatoes. ( 0% Fresh) Ironically, many consider it the best GBA 1st person shooter...depending on whether you prefer your combat slightly realistic, or prefer demons from Hell.

    2. Doom 1&2 - How do you feel about censorship?

    3. Duke Nukem - Now you can pretend to be a grown man pretending to be Bruce Campbell. Women talk to him!*

    4. Dark Arena - Just look at that name. Ponder what it means. Did the game end before you got there?

    5. Ice 9 - Linear, or the straight and narrow path? Lovely scenery though.

*In other games. No, seriously. Money sometimes changes hands, but it counts.

I never ever played Doom in its heydays, so all of this is a new gaming experience.

Do you actually own and have played all the games you are mentioning in this thread? If yes, I call you the GBA God :)

  5. I had an Atari 800XL. While I had access to tons of games, many I also really enjoyed, it was the time, when nothing new appeared anymore for the Atari and tons of good stuff for the other system was out of reach, which made me wish for the C64.

But I skipped thr C64 and got the Amiga 500 instead. The Atari was given to a friend.

  6. I would like to know how the Gameboy classic stacks up against the Gameboy color and pocket. What matters most to me is screen quality and how nice the d-pad is. I don't really care about color.

I like the controls on the gameboy classic, but the screen leaves something to be desired. There was a gameboy pocket at goodwill I had to pass up, becuase of how they miniaturized the d-pad kinda like on the gamecube controller. I hate the tiny d-pads. How is the controls and screen on a gameboy color?

You maybe wanna check out a GB SP for backwards compatibility with original GB and Gameboy Color games.

The screen is said to be as good now as in the Micro and I can tell u from the Micro it is wonderful.

The controls I dont know but if the Micro is any reference, to me it looks and feels like the GB classic. D-Pad is big, response excellent.

  7. I had a closer look at the DS and its games - I really dont like the stylus thingy. Dont wanna play games PDA-like. Maybe its quite different from PDA but its already too different from old school.

I know it's too late, as you've already made your purchase, but some great games don't even use the stylus (Mario Kart, Sonic Rush), some have the option between stylus or digital (Mario 64, Animal Crossing, Picross, Metroid Hunters), some use the stylus sparingly (New Super Mario Bros., Castlevania). The ones that I like that do force the stylus use it pretty well (Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents, Clubhouse Games, Mario vs. DK 2).

There's also some good oldschool games like Mr. Driller, Dig Dug, Impossible Mission, Bubble Bobble (though it's also for GBA), Bust-a-Move, and Konami collection.

Atari collection for DS isn't very good =/ You don't even zoom through the level in Tempest when you beat it.

Hey, thanks for sharing ur view. Although I made my purchase I will follow the DS a little. Im sure, its a great little system, like almost everything from Nintendo.

Going for the GBA Micro was in first instance because of its phenomenal size. I cannot stress how important that is to me.

Now, that Im having it and digging into it, I find that it is a neat console with great games out in the wild.

  8. I'm really hoping it's another portable project. I really don't have a lot of interest in the FB3, I didn't own any Atari consoles after the 7800 so the nostalgia value isn't really there for the system for me. I was really excited for a portable 2600 and I know alot of people that would have loved it too. The idea of hooking another pseudo console up to the TV just doesn't interest me when they could just release the games through VC, XB Live or Sony Online and have less hardware involved. It seems like the $$ right now is in handhelds too.

    It is a portable FB3.

  9. if you had a kid, what would their first system be?

Since you are posting in the classic games section, I guess you exclude anything like PS2 and Gamecube?

Depending on age, but if I go to friends houses with kids under 14, the Gamecube and or PS2 rules.

Concerning classic gaming: I would buy some usb retro conrollers and do some emulation to teach them about the classic home computers games, NES, Master System, etc. Giving them a GBA rather than a DS.

I also could imagine getting a nice NES/SNES clone and looking for carts. I wouldnt let them touch my FB2 though :D

  10. The problem with these devices was that there was only one emulator built into them and only a limited amount of games

If companies were serious about this market and its potential what they would have done is the follwoing

create a general hardware based emulator (i.e only replicates custom chip sets, cpu/mpu's etc)

if you wish to play a certain emulator you simply take the device to a registed stockist/dealer and for a small fee they will upload an emulator module into your device, from the emulator that you've chosen (which also includes any or all o/s roms) and you can do that for as many emulators as you want (or to the limit of the devices memory)

The device will have a built in USB or PC stylee Network port, so you can download on to the device from a pc/mac, emulator compatible games/rom images for emulators that come with this device

As the device would be capable of running both computer and game system emulators, there would have been an option of a ps2/usb connector for attaching a pc or mac keyboard and mouse (which would be programmed to working in a specific way with particular emulators)

The device would also come with another USB connector this time with an adaptor to handling either Atari/Nintendo or PS1 etc joysticks also ST/Amiga compat. mice and joysticks as well

The device would have been compat. with USB/SDr memory sticks (SDR memory sticks, like the ones that you use with digital cameras, for saving your games/rom images you've downloaded from a pc/mac, eventually though an additional expanader box, simply called i/o expanded which would have fitted to the devices external data bus, the i/o expander would have had a built in notebook style (2.5 in.) large cap. hard drive, additional usb/sdr memory slots, a slot of attaching 3.5in. IDE/Sata type hard drives/cd/dvd devices (so you can play any emulator compat. game/rom file straight from the harddrive or cd/dvd drives as well as a DVI or VGA output so you can use a FPD or Plasma Screen or Pc/Mac Monitor as video output

The device would already come with a built TV out socket so as to displaying game content on a tv screen (although the device will come with it's own built in screen anyway)

Nice idea, but exactly that isnt Jakks business model. They dont invest in infrastructure, after market and such.

The game key console was a step into that direction. A pity they didnt develop it further.

Good to know about the Pac-Man Gold edition.

So, my Namco stick without game key plays differently from the other version?

Came the game key stick after mine?

  11. Actually, the entier GBC architecture is still inside the Micro (just as it is still inside the DS) The only thing missing is a switch to jack the voltage up to 5v so that it can run properly in full GBC mode. (left out supposedly due to size limitations  How the hell much space do they thnk a simple switch takes anyways, dremel part of the board thickness off and put it there.) The real reason is...lets face it, the battery life sucks on both of those systems. Jacking the voltage up for the 8 bit would simply drain the battery faster. But honestly, why should that have not been left up to the consumer? After all, just because you put the switch in there, doesn't mean you have to use it if the battery life is to horrible.

BTW, you can play color games on the Micro, and DS, with an adaptor cart that actually acts just as the switch in the standard GBA and SP did. So...technically, we're around that problem. Just sucks I have to buy an addon, to access built in hardware

Very interesting. The pity is, the Micro came too late for 3rd party hardware developers to make a difference. Otherwise we would have seen a flashcart for the Micro enabling this feature as well. The same goes for the battery. Is it kind of standard? If yes, it shouldnt be a problem to replace it with a much better one to go far beyond 10 hours.

  12.

What mode are the digisounds of the GBA are usually sampled in?

They seem to be like 8 bit or something?

Nothing to complain about, stresses the retro feeling, but I thought it had higher quality.

It varies. The original gameboy 2 channel sound chip is inside the GBA, and can be called on when a game requires the full graphics capability of the system without the performance hit. The GBA can do digitized music, with lyrics, where needed...I'll find a few examples...

OH, wow, I didnt know that. Is it also the case with the Micro since it has not the chips of the GB? But then there would be no sound, right?

  13. The GBA isn't dead yet, there's still games being released for it, albeit a handful. The "biggest" IMHO is the new Spyro game coming in October. Some big releases this year include TMNT, Final Fantasy VI Advance, Shrek the Third (solely based on the movie being a hit), and Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix (ditto.) You can read up on games yet to be released for the GBA on my page GBA 07, a page dedicated to what is the poor Game Boy Advance's last year, which is a shame because it's such a cool little system, whether it be the original, SP, Game Boy Player or Micro. My favorite GBA game (so far) is Mario Kart: Super Circuit.

What is the Spyro thing about?

Well, Nintendo might say, they dont develop anymore but they still produce and sell the hardware.

Alone the Micro sold in total more than 13 millions devices. Okay, given, there might be a number of buyers for the Micro who just shifted from the SP, or for collection reasons. But out in the wild are still millions of GBAs users. I cannot imagine that there will not be the one or other gem anymore next year or so. If they let it die finally in 2008 or 2009 we have seen a life cycle of about 9 years. Not too bad. Plus homebrew will be active for some more years to come.

  14. I'm surprised nobody mentioned it (or maybe I missed them)

If you like Classic stuff, You gotta pick up...

    Namco Collection

    Pac-man Collection

Activision Anthology (with Homebrew games on it)

    Atari

Anyhow, there's more of those, but yeah, there pretty much self explanitory...

I personally like all the NFS games. And their good 3D games, fully polygonal. Crazy Taxy is a great game, fairly accurate (considering) to the DC original... And don't let Mode 7 put you off. The F Zero games are great, so is Mario Kart. Konami Krazy Karts is also great, and Cartoon Network Speedway is one of my favorite Mode 7's on there. Also, the GTA (GT Advanced) games are all good as wel.

I personally like Advance Wars, their both good games too. Mech Platoon is actually a RTS, which is pretty rare among handhelds, and even GBA, which has several.

If you like RPG's, Golden Sun is an absolute Must, yeah, everybody else will say Final Fantasy, but other than graphic upgrades, (dependinog on the game) you've probably played those befor.

There are Tons of FPS on here, that actually work quiet well.

Doom and Doom 2, are great ports, more complete (though not as colorful) than the Jaguar game

Serious Sam, Duke Nukem (it's own game, not a port) Ecks VS Sever, which is a pretty awesome, though short game. Dark Arena, like doom, but it's own game for GBA.

Zelda, Metroid, the NES classic games (I still can't find Mario, oh well, Mario Delux for GBA will hold me over)

The E reader, and it's card packs, there are 13 officially released, emulated NES games for this (and many compatible games you can print off to play on it, since it is in fact actually emulateing the NES) It's a piece of great (under appreciated) piece of equipment, and don't let the "NOT E READER COMPATIBLE" part in the instructions of your Micro throw you off, it does work perfectly fine (you just can't use the Passthrough link port which doesn't do anything as near as I can tell anyways)

Another thing, which you'll probably have to buy online, get a GBA Movie player. It will let you read text, play some smaller games (great for homebrew crap) Watch Movies (as the name implies) and listen to music, pretty much MP3 quality.

There is literally TONS of awsome stuff for the GBA, don't let anybody tell you it's just a POS kids system. In many ways, it's superior to the modern consoles we have now.

    Hope this helps you out.

    Thanx for participating :)

Im going to work through the list you provided.

Namco museum I got from day 1 just to have something to play with. I enjoy Dig Dug most on it, also Ms Pacman does fine if u know ur maze because it is only visible/playable in scrolling mode on the Micro.

Pole Position: nothing beats my Jakks twisting joystick for that.

Galaga: its playable although I dont like the screen cut off on the right with the scores.

As if u could read my mind. Im researching flash carts for the Micro and my fav. right now is the M3 Adapter perfect. I also found some great homebrews already not to mention I will use the MP3 function to see if I like it. Movies? I dont know.

Dont worry. I dont mind what others might think about the GBA. To me its he perfect gaming on the go and everywhere with the Micro. I wouldnt bother with the SP. The DS is already to big. Micro rules. I hardly cant wait to mod it with an even better battery for gaming beyond the 6-7 hours.

Are there any woodgrain faceplates? :D

  15. Well, history showed there were a bunch of latest technology consoles who in the end failed.

Gamecube and N64 before never appealed to me for the mostly only-Nintendo content.

So, back then, I bought a Playstation.

Now, with the Wii and names like EA and others developing for it, Nintendo has the best chance to be on top for a very long time.

  16. well, I'm paypal disputing it now. We'll see what happens. They're all games i already have loose is the sad part. :(

Sorry to hear that. If Paypal is any good, u should be covered by their buyers protection if u can prove it.

A little of topic: the worst new games section, where all cartons look rubish, is the GBA section in any EBGames or Gamestop. I just cannot understand who is paying full price for boxes mistreated like there. Not me.

  17. Seems as though main stream retro gaming has moved from the plug and play sticks to downloadable content for the current gen of consoles.

In my opinion completely 2 different kind of leagues. Arcade collections have always been around in one or the other form on consoles and PC, being downloadable just a different type of media distribution.

What makes my Namco stick excellent is, besides the faithful ports, it is a joy to use the stick and buttons, high score saving, etc.

Being very portable I lend it to friends to compete for high scores, waiting to get it back and see if there is a new challenger.

Also, an easy setup for parties, etc.

  18. Then I'm sorry to bring back my report. Ready for the bad news?

There isn't a single good simulation basketball game for the GBA. Worse, there aren't any bad ones either. You have a choice between a broken version of NBA Jam, or a few children's titles.

Hockey isn't much better - NHL 2002 is a Genesis game in disguise, and your only choice. Unless you want to set the puck on fire.

    http://media.gameboy.ign.com/media/481/481...mg_1559316.html

Those 2 NHL games should do it. I just read a review on Hitz. Nothing terribly wrong with it. And the Genesis port they say is as good as it was back then. Maybe not innovative but fun enough.

For basketball, Backyard series is promising. Reminds me on Streets Sport from Epyx and with that in mind I would love to give it a chance.

Any Kick OFF or Sensible Soccer spin off avaiable?

    post-12969-1186169872_thumb.jpg

    Steven Gerrard's Total Soccer 2002.

If this brings a tear to your eye, it's as good as the graphics are retro. Good luck hunting it down.

If you wouldnt had before already I could say by now you made my day :) :) :)

This looks beautiful. I remember playing kick off thru the first nights despite going to school next day. I am seeing myself laying next to my wife playing it from sunset until sunrise.... if I can find a copy!!!!

I am in love by now with that little Micro.

  19. post-12969-1186168117_thumb.png

See the car about to turn? It's driving straight down the road, Disney on ice style.

    post-12969-1186168932_thumb.jpg

Driver 2 avoids the visual glitches, at the cost of global conformity.

For someone who hasnt played any Driver yet in his life, is Driver2 pleasing after all?

  21. [The Hockey and Basketball games - I'll get back to you. This thread has been the excuse I've needed to make time for my GBA.

Im happy u take the time. :)

BTW A sprite, because of ur excellent mini reviews my confidence grows to have opted for the right system. I always had a weakness for excellent 2D graphics and I guess the GBA might be one of the last consoles sadly.

Is Soccer Kid as good as the Amiga version I have played?

  22. post-12969-1186159899_thumb.png

Madden 2006: Unlike other consoles, the GBA played host to two generations of EA's adorably inarticulate sugar daddy. From 2002-2004, the GBA was treated to basic SNES ports, which were enough to awe portable gamers used to the chess like speeds of the gameboy's previous offerings. It wasn't until 2005, that the gameboy recieved an American football game designed for 32 bit - this engine was originally created for the NGage, and ported down with no loss of gameplay.

Awesome work, A sprite, keep it going. Thanks to you and the other writers of this thread I was able to take a different look at another store.

I saw Astro Boy, now knowing its great, I will head back nex week to secure the deal.

I saw the Capcom Mini collection selling for 10 bucks. Are the ports any good?

Grand Theft Auto is high on my list. What about Driver2? It got some decent reviews. Collin Mc Rae will also be one of my investments.

I saw Madden 07. How does it compare? What about the NHL and NBA series?
