Since Wyvern Tales is an hommage to old school japanese RPG, the random battle (and the subsequent grinding) are to be expected. I'm not a big fan of that system too, but if the game is excellent I guess that's fine :) (and at least during those ages, the griding was just to  level-up, not to make you spend more money...)

I've never been a fan of random encounters and turn based battles, but I did really enjoy this game.  I spent a lot of time grinding early on and also did all the side quests, although I think I found a bug in one if I recall correctly.  I have a ton of respect for @Ninjabba for making it.  A game like this has to be one of the most difficult to create.

  2. I hadn't messed with the FBP in a while, but since I picked up one of the 2019 woodgrain ones yesterday, It piqued my interest again.  I tried this game expecting that it wouldn't load at all and was surprised with a properly rendered title screen... then instead of starting a game, it repeats the title screen.  Oh well... got further than I expected, but it would be nice if a FBP compatible version was eventually available.

  3. Just wanted to say that I really like this game.  It took me forever to figure out how to play it.  Not sure why the instructions just weren't making sense to me.  It wasn't until the ZeroPage video that I kinda understood what was going on.  After understanding the controls, it's very simple and enjoyable.  I still love the old Bowling game by Atari, but this perspective is a great addition to the 2600 library.  Excellent job on this.  I do wish your games worked on the FB Portable, but I guess we can't have everything.  ;-)

Now I have to figure out the controls for Pro Golf.  No matter how many times I've read the instructions, I've not been able to understand how to play it... and I really want to because it looks great.

First off, the screens are still the wrong orientation--they are vertically oriented, so if you hold the device horizontally, one eye will see a slightly inverted picture.

Not sure what you mean by that.  Can you explain?

The d-pad feels about the same as the original, but pressing to the right doesn't usually register unless you press it and then squeeze. Hopefully I just got a faulty unit and can exchange it, but otherwise, if you play any games that require moving to the right, this might bother you.

Mine doesn't have that issue, so maybe you could exchange it for another.

There are a few improvements to the emulator, but not many. The BW/color switch is now a toggle instead of momentary (which, if memory serves, might break a couple controller hacks), and they fixed it so that the difficulty display goes away after a moment. The SD card browser is reskinned to match the rest of the menus, but hitting the "menu" button in-game still takes you back to the main menu. The vertical refresh still does its "diagonal line" thing.

I'm really glad for this change.  Games that use the B/W switch should work as expected now.  In Casino 21 Blue, you can now play against the "family friendly" dealer.  Of the games I've tested so far, with hacks that are meant for a momentary press, you can just double tap the button.  In the Spy Hunter hack, for example, I just hit the B/W button twice so the alternate weapon doesn't keep firing.  Unfortunately, one of the homebrew games that would have benefited from this, Anguna, still doesn't work properly (the ball used for closed doors [I think it's the ball] stretches the whole screen and moves pretty randomly, sometimes blocking your path and sometimes not).  The Anguna incompatibility isn't new though.

I noticed in the manual, it mentions placing a firmware.bin update on the SD card, so at least they've made updates possible.  It says if the firmware.bin is not there, the stock firmware will be used, which is also nice since it seems like it won't be brickable from a bad update.

Here's a question for @Bill Loguidice, can we now place a database file on the SD card to have boxarts like in previous genesis portables?  Are there any firmware or feature updates currently planned, or is it still too early?

I just designed and 3D printed this D-pad to replace the awful D-pad that comes on the Flashback portable!

    post-64981-0-15190400-1528820887_thumb.jpg

Care to share the stl file?  I'd love to replace the D-pad in last year's model.  I'd also like to have an alternative to this year's and 2016's models, although they'd require some editing (their D-pad is not as tall), so this print would stick up too far in them.

  5. I'm really glad you all posted about the woodgrain portable and it being at Dollar General.  I wasn't aware it existed.  I just went down to my local DG and looked all over the store for it, up and down every aisle.  Didn't find it so I grabbed a couple drinks and chips and went to check out... where I saw the woodgrain portables up above the checkout.  There were 2 left, so at the sale price of only $25, I picked up one for myself and one for a gift.

I love that they went back to the original molding.  I also love the red button and brown dashes around the D-pad.  It's definitely my favorite portable in appearance.  It's currently charging, so I haven't turned it on yet, but it looks like they went back to the larger screen as well.  Looks like AtGames did a good job on this year's portable and actually found a gimmick to get me to buy another when I was not in the market for one.   🙂

Thanks for the pdfs!  I was able to do some pretty nice prints and make my PRGE purchases feel a little more complete.  🙂

Now I just need one for my Ninja Odyssey cart.

*A note for anyone who wants to print these with Adobe Acrobat -- you'll need to insert a blank page after the 1st and before the last pages to make the pages equal out in booklet print mode.  If you do that, you'll get the full color front and B&W back with a 2nd inside page being a double-sided.  I printed in "left (tall)" binding on Letter sized paper (8.5"x11") so that my manuals would be a bit smaller.  If you print with just "left" binding, you'll get a normal sized manual.

  7. I got in on the pre-order for both, but was extremely disappointed (again) in the jump control not having an option for assigning it to a button.  Instead, you have to press UP.  So, I've not spent much time with Impossimole because I just find this control frustrating.

This trend of porting an ST game, but leaving the control scheme as-is has really soured me on these releases.  Even on the more recent cartridge releases of TMNT, Rampage, and Action Fighter, etc.  So many buttons to choose from on the Jaguar, but only 1 button used, like the ST or Amiga.  To me, when it gets put on cartridge and sold for this amount of $$, a little more care should be put into control options.  The old ST and Amiga may have used 1 button joysticks like the Atari 2600, but there's just no reason to leave it that way on the Jag.  I found myself just getting angry while playing TMNT and not really wanting to buy any more.  Although I've bought every physical release up to this point, I'm a little fatigued and quite frustrated at how many of them have no improvement to button options whatsoever.

  8. Here you go.  It's 600dpi (a bit overkill with many printers, but mine does nice at that resolution). You might want to adjust the hue/brightness/contrast to your liking on your printer.  I haven't compared this woodgrain to one of my actual 2600s' since they're in storage, but it's fine for now.  I may eventually reprint it with a different pattern.

If you are careful to cut out the black for the joystick ports, they should line up.  The start of the wood pattern should line up with your Flashback's front bottom.  I left a little excess (approx 1mm or so) at the far left and right, but the rest should be cut with no overage.  The top wraps around.

That is cool looking! How did you do this? I once though of using some kind of adhesive paper with a woodgrain design to do this. But never got around to it.

Thanks! I did exactly that -- printed on glossy sticker paper and laminated it.  🙂

If ppl are interested, I can upload my printable image.

I kinda think I prefer the limited wood look of it without my little woodgrain mod.  It looks a bit more modern like that.  But that's what good about this just being a sticker; I can easily remove it it I tire of it.

I've thought about removing the brown paint (woodgrain) from my other standard Flashback 9 HD and painting silver over the brown painted trim around the button area, for more of a Vader look.

    P.S.

I also got some lead sinkers, the large egg PEG-6 SZ:1 ones from Walmart.  I hammered them into rectangles and glued them into the four bottom corners inside the shell.  That gave it enough weight to feel nicer when handling it.  I also added some sinkers inside the joysticks.

  10. Might not be the best place to share this, but I didn't think it warranted its own thread...

Custom firmware Flashback 9 Gold needed a little custom woodgrain.  Not sure I like it, but maybe if I 3D print some black buttons.  I've been trying to decide what might look best.  I was thinking about maybe some kind of silver colored inlays in black custom buttons (probably leaving the power button as the stock red).

  11. While looking through some old photos recently, I found some pics of JagFest 2001.  I thought it might be nice to upload them here since most of the old sources are gone or only accessible through web archive.  I may remember something incorrectly or not remember at all, so feel free to add to or correct me if you were there.

    Highlights that I remember:

    • Hosted by Dan Loosen (the Goat Store)
    • I had a booth at this one where I demoed:
    1. the real Lynx AVP prototype (this was before it was widely available)
    2. a Phase Zero prototype
    3. a 3DO with the unreleased Jaguar games, such as Robinson's Requiem, Demolition Man, Creature Shock, etc.
    4. an Atari Jaguar with every released game
    5. an Atari ST with various games
    6. an Atari 7800 with every game
    7. an Atari 5200 with various games
    • Micah Rowe had the Brett Hull Hockey cartridge for demo
    • The Jaguar VR with Missile Command 3D
    • Songbird Lynx tournaments: Ponx (1st place: me).  I remember playing Championship Rally, but I don't remember if it was comlynxed or if there was a tournament.
    • Carl demoing Total Carnage, Protector SE, and other Songbird releases
    • Dan hosting a Ram It tournament (which was the 1st time I think I saw or played the game)
    • 10 linked Jaguars for an awesome BattleShpere tournament (I thought I remembered 16, but just saw some old articles and it was 10)
    • Iron Soldier 3 for demo on a NUON
    • A museum of classic systems
    • A PCFX for demo
    • I won a copy of Hoverstrike CD for something, but don't remember what.  Since I already owned every Jaguar game, I kept it sealed... still have it to this day.

While typing this up, I decided to check on a few things and found this old writeup:

    Just home from JagFest 2K1!

Posted by Kevin Mosley (AC840DEA.ipt.aol.com) on July 02, 2001 at 05:13:10:

    Hello everyone!
Well, Jagfest 2K1 far exceeded my expectations. A Great BIG thanks to Dan and all the others who did so much to make this year's fest a great success. In my opinion it definitely lived up to being the best yet.

There were a lot of great things to see and some cool protos to play, (Brett Hull Hockey, Slam Racers, Total Carnage, Protector SE, and others), but I'd have to say that my favorite part of all was meeting all the really great people. It was really nice to put a face with the names I've seen around online. That was truly an honor. I'll never forget Micah... everything just seemed to have such an unlucky twist for him that it was almost comical. ; ) But, only because he took it so well. Of course, meeting the man who has given the Jag new life most recently, Carl Forhan, was a pleasure. Thanks to all the rest of you who attended... Eric Armstrong, Randy Femrite and his wife, Ted Rusniak, Fard Muhammad, Clay Halliwell, Clint Thompson, Chad Tindle, Jason Data, Terrance Williams, [email protected], Max and the Goat crew, Dan and Gary... and everyone else who I can't think of right now. Everyone was so nice. Obviously, the Atari community could not be so great without such great people in the community.

There were many items of interest. I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw a working Jaguar VR there. Unfortunately, by the time I played it, the tracking was terrible, making it very hard to control. I guess so many people handling it and putting their fingerprints all over it caused its performance to drop.
There was a Library of systems from Pong and Odyssey, to Amiga, Mac, and todays newest systems. That was a really cool trip down memory lane. I had never gotten to play a Vectrex before, or even seen one in operation.
The Nuon was pretty cool, but I wasn't overly impressed with IS3, (there weren't many improvements from the Playstation version), and I still like Tempest 2K better than 3K.... (oops, did I say that? Just don't tell Jeff) : O
Micah Rowe had Brett Hull Hockey and a really cool collection of Atari Jaguar and Lynx reviews, articles, and ads from different publications over the years (including the ads and reviews for the newest games released by Songbird).
Speaking of Songbird, Carl Forhan kept stirring up excitement by announcing a different prototype for display every little bit.
It was great to be a part of the 10 linked Battlespheres. The Jaguar I was seated at failed to connect over, and over, and over, showing me a mocking, stuck out tongue a few more times than I cared to see. After checking all the connections, switching Jaguars, Catboxes, and Battlesphere cartridges, it seemed I was the only variable remaining. Finally, it was discovered that the wrong kind of cable was used on mine, and I was relieved to know that my Jaguar didn't have a personality that I had ticked off.
Lastly, I had a few things for display that I was very pleased to see a few people taking interest in, (mainly Phaze Zero and AVP for the Lynx). I had really hoped to contribute something to the fest this year and I feel like I accomplished a little of that regardless of how small.

As for my trip, I spent a total of 53 and 1/2 hours without sleep. This made for many of you at the fest receiving some blank, "no one's home" stares from me throughout the day. This has been a vacation that has really worn me out. I started by driving from Dallas, TX to Chatanooga, TN, then Lexington, KY to visit my parents. From there, I went to Eastern KY to visit more family and back. Then it was time to make the 8 1/2 hour drive from KY to Milwaukee. By the time I arrived at Jagfest I was out of it... totally hopped up on "yellow jacket" pills. A special thanks to Carl Forhan and Max for helping me unpack and pack. That was a major help. It wasn't until about 10:00 pm that I started feeling somewhat normal again. I apologize if I seemed like a zombie throughout parts of the day. ; )
Tuesday night, I drive back to TX where I'll immediately go to work when I arrive Wednesday evening. It's been a demanding vacation, but it was worth it. I would do it all over again.

    Until next time........

    Take Care,
    Kevin Mosley

Unfortunately, the only JagFests I was able to attend were 1998, 2001, and 2003 (which was combined with the Austin Gaming Expo and was the last year for a U.S. JagFest).  While 2003 wasn't a dedicated JagFest, I still had a great time and was glad to make the trip with my friend DoctorClu.

  12. I went through some old pictures the other day and found some from JagFest 1998.  I thought it might be nice to upload them here for posterity and see if anyone recognizes themselves or someone they know.

    Highlights that I remember:

    • Hosted by Kevin Manne
    • Battlesphere demo
    • Thea Realm Fighters demo
    • Steve Scavone showing Gorf 3D progress
    • Aircars networked play
    • Super Burnout tournament (1st place: Wes Powell)
    • Tempest 2000 tournament (1st place: Wes Powell who absolutely crushed it)
    • Psychedelic Pong tournament (1st place: Me)
    • Ultra Vortek tournament (1st place: Wes Powell)
    • Native demo (I believe this was the first time I saw/played it)
    • Various homebrew for play loaded by bjl (if I remember correctly)
    • Dave Bell talking about his wealth of knowledge on the Tramiels as well as his vaporware game, Defcon 1 (I believe it was his Alpine devkit that was displayed)
    • Wes Powell successfully jumping over 2 tables
    • Primal Rage soundtrack CD donated to me by Wes Powell (He said it was awful... I listened to it on the long drive back from New York... He was right... But I cherish it nonetheless ;-))
    • Someone walking off with my copy of Secret Quest for the Atari 2600

  13. I've done two 3D prints of different shell designs so far.  One won't work for larger PCB 7800 games, and the other requires a lot of work to make it acceptable.  Both took roughly 5 hours to print which is also not good for anything more than a very small run.  I'm going to try some different settings to see if I can get a better print with less work afterward.

  14. I recently reformatted the pdf with all text retyped and all images' contrast/brightness adjusted for better results with my printer (your mileage may vary).  I thought to upload the pdf here, but turns out my adjustments made the thing 56MB 😲 (prolly because I made it 600dpi).

So, here's a google drive link.  Zipped up it's just over 42MB.

    https://drive.google.com/open?id=15iKTEZx-zPzCkA6aM72a9Pmsv4BgXIsx

If you print with Adobe Acrobat or some variant of it, choose the "Booklet" setting.  You'll want to be able to print double sided.  For my printer, I found out "Orientation" had to be "Portrait," (NOT "Landscape" like you'd think).  It will print Landscape either way, but when set to Landscape, it prints the reverse-side pages upside-down.  Here's a screenshot of my Adobe print settings:

    1654694811_MMGuideAdobePrintSettings.thumb.png.7955dc3211389e05e5b37f6d513fcce4.png

Printed like this, you can fold the stack of pages in half to make a booklet, staple it at the center line, and trim off the edges.  It should turn out like the pic in my earlier post.
