  1. I love how you've taken some of your previous WIPs and come up with this. Personally, I like the brown background way better than the blue or gray. Maybe another shade of brown would suit on a real console/TV. Other colors would be fine for variety if you travel to other planets, but other than personal taste, I can't give a great argument for the first planet surface resembling dirt. As for gameplay, I found it very difficult my first go at it... but I love it nonetheless. If needed, I can play around with it on real hardware tomorrow.
  2. I normally don't even click on threads with "ideas from non-programmers," but I think this is an excellent proposal. I would love to see it made into a game someday. It's definitely something I could get excited about.
  3. Here's another... Mario is a bit more like the 7800 version and the girders are red. I don't like the red girders as much, but I like this Mario better. Donkey Kong Arcade 2.bin Here's girders with the color 54, (slightly darker than 56 from my earlier post), and the newer mario edit. I think it's slightly closer to the arcade color. Donkey Kong Arcade new.bin
  4. Ok, so here are a few color locations for you to play with: Donkey Kong: 06D8 Girders: 0A08 Mario's Girl: 09E5 - 09F4) Mario Standing/Running: 0B3F - 0B4F Mario Climbing: 0B6D - 0B7B Barrels & Flames: 09E4 Opening/Title/Inactive Score: 0673 Player Active Score: 067C Keep in mind that if you want it to look like the arcade, the girder colors are a pink/purple/red rather than red. The closest color in the TIA palette in my opinion is somewhere around 56. Here's the hack I did almost a year ago with my "interpretations" of arcade colors: Donkey Kong Arcade.bin This game could really use some hacking to separate colors from the ladders, fire barrel, etc. Here's a mockup pic of what I'm talking about: Even if a couple rungs of the ladders between those slanted girders needed to stay the same color as the girders it would still look better than all being a single color in my opinion.
  5. I like what you did with the turtles. There were some things that always bothered me too, like the look of frogger when you reach the other side. So, I made a couple minor edits to your turtle idea, the cars, frogger, the logs, and the snake (which already looked good, but I made it like the Sega cassette version). It would be nice to make it where each sprite could have more than one color like the cassette version. As for sprite edits, I'm probably done. FroggerTK2.bin
  6. I did a hack of Donkey Kong to make it look a tad better last Christmas break. The girder colors was one of the changes I made (among others). I just never shared it because there were already so many similar Donkey Kong hacks out there. I'd tell you where the byte is for the color, but I don't remember off the top of my head and I don't have anything in front of me to look at it right now. If I think of it, I'll post when I get home. I was thinking the other day that it would be nice to hack the sounds in the game. I know a lot of people don't like the sound of the 7800 Donkey Kong, but I prefer those sounds over the 2600 version.
  7. The label in post #19 looks great. The only thing I don't like is the purple 7800. It just doesn't look 7800 to me. I really feel like it should be dark red/maroon like in post #10. Anyway, awesome job! I really like jaybird's method of showing what features of the XM are used. Combining that with parts of PAC-MAN PRIME's design would be just about perfect.
  8. This game has so much potential, I could squirt! Awesome job so far good sir. edit: I hope the people inside the buildings aren't hookers. They must be starving, with the way they latch on to you. I'm feeling a lot of love.
  9. I took it that he's working hard to have more than a "demo" available by Halloween. I hope I'm right. Either way, we should let him work.
  10. I think a background story in the manual is almost essential. I always enjoyed reading the story of a game. It added a lot -- and since the graphics were usually so abstract, the games really needed the added background info for a proper imagined setting. I never really thought about it before, but I'd say not having a manual was part of the reason I didn't enjoy certain games as much.
  11. A multi-screen pinball would be awesome.
  12. How could I mention dragons and not think of Adventure???
  13. Love the characters! How about Bentley Bear? ...the dragon from Dragonfire and any other game with dragons involved? ...the Kangaroo from -- well -- Kangaroo?
  14. Hmm, how about a "Thank you Mario, but our princess is in another castle!"? That would probably take up too much ROM space, but just a dummy sprite could still be cool. Maybe a flower growing in that dark lair? A teaser sprite of one of the poachers? ...Just some kind of visual reward for making it to the dead end.
  15. Awesome job. I love the continue/quit screen. Have you entertained the suggestion of adding something to a couple of those dead-end areas? ...like an extra life or something?
  16. I don't find it amusing, but I also don't need to join a boycott. I don't go there often because the site layout is murder on dialup anyway. Now that I see the front page, I choose to close the tab rather than enter the site. Anyone who goes there will be confronted with the statement first thing, so they can quickly decide for themselves whether they like it or not. It's not exactly something hidden that needs to have a light shined on it to make people aware. If anything, a thread like this will probably generate more traffic which may be interpreted as increased interest from the new approach. I think that's the opposite effect you wish to have if you'd like to see the front page changed. Perhaps a friendly personal note to the site owner would go further.
  17. STeSearcher purchased a 7800 from me. His communication was timely and friendly and his payment was prompt. I would be happy to deal with him in the future and would recommend him to others. It was a pleasant deal all around.
  18. When I first saw your thread, I read the title as "Shoot the BS". I really didn't know what to make of that. I like the game options. It's good having multiple modes. It's definitely very challenging. Having the clouds kill you in mode 3 kicks my butt. BTW, why don't the Cs and Bs get along? How long has this rivalry been taking place? Is it because the Cs came after the Bs and they think they're better? Or are the Bs uppity because they're closer to As? What does that mean for Zs, if anything? Questions... questions.
  19. If it did, they'd probably want to sue Atari.
  20. I've been repairing/building computers for the past several years and I used to like Western Digital also. It has seemed to me that as soon as I started seeing drives go SATA and 500GB or more, (actually 250GB too), Western Digital became unreliable. You would not believe how many SATA WD drives I've had to replace that were less than two years old -- and most of those were less than one year old. I haven't explored all the factors that play into this. I've always stressed how important it is to back up important data, but I don't trust magnetic storage at all anymore. Last year I had a "new" 320GB Western Digital MyBook drive that I was using for archiving. The problem was that I foolishly decided to temporarily move some things over to this backup drive instead of keeping copies elsewhere. After about TWO MONTHS, this WD drive died and died hard! Again, the drive inside that MyBook enclosure was SATA. I lost everything but I've wanted to find another of the exact model to swap out the controller board and see if I could recover anything. Unfortunately, it's been hard to find that particular model since WD discontinued them quickly, (I can see why). However, I've never seen IDE drives of similar size go bad so quickly. I haven't looked into why that is. BTW, congrats on the paddle support.
  21. This is something I've asked about. My idea was to make the delay for an enemy attack a bit longer than for the player. This would give you more of a window in which to attack before being pummeled. However, this is currently impossible because the same logic is used for the player as the enemy. It's my understanding that if enough RAM were freed up to give the player(s) their own logic, it would make way for some nice possibilities. I'm not currently skilled enough to do these things, but there have been talks about it. I hope that something can be done -- but until then, (or until we get word that there just can't be enough RAM freed), at least we can have unlimited health and time.
  22. You can use its finger to pick your nose. It might think twice before doing that again. I don't remember seeing a thread with them listed, but it's not hard to browse through this hacks forum. It takes time to find all the goodies because it's so many pages deep, but the time it takes is worth it. There are a lot of good hacks here, so you'll not only find all the "Arcade" hacks, but a lot of others you'll like as well. Don't bother with the search function for this. BTW, Galaxian has just gotten a lot cooler. Hopefully, it'll be ready for upload soon, (it's different from the one in my thread; it's been updated since then). I'll post more info about it once it's done.
  23. Nukey was nice enough to train the game for unlimited health. However, he trained the original ROM and I haven't yet incorporated my changes. When I do that, I'll get them uploaded. That should be a treat for everyone... since all will have the opportunity to beat the game.
