Hey, kids. Welcome. I got a Vanilla Fudge album today, that makes 3, this one is on CD and bought it for the almost 20-minute long "Break Song", almost 20 minutes of instrumental late 60's rock. I like Vanilla Fudge. This is the first of their CDs I could find anywhere. And apparently, they're coming out with a new album in February! According to the website, it's a collection of Led Zeppelin covers. I wonder if they're going to do Stairway to Heaven? I also got the first season of Robot Chicken and reserved FFVI Advance. So there. Here's the most up-to-date GBA release dates.
    Feb. 6 - FFVI Advance
    Feb. 13 - Ghost Rider
    Mar. 5 - MLB 2K7
Mar. 13 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
    May - Shrek the Third
June - Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer
July - Harry Potter & Order of Phoenix

This weekend, I'll try again to find Dark Light for my GBA blog, but it has been eluding me.

More like "Symphony I Gave Up On." I'm trying to make a MIDI and am having no luck on what notes to use in the bass part (calliope 8va, track 2) once I get to part B of the song. It's the music from level 1 of Rayman Raving Rabbids for GBA, but you don't really have to know that in order to help me out here. Pick some notes that sound good with what I have (track 1 - Vibraphone and track 3 - Whistle). I don't care which, just any that sound good. I'd really like to submit this to vgmusic.com!

Right now, I'm secretly working on projects for the Minigame Compo of 2007. This first project will be unveiled shortly after the compo starts on Feb. 1. Here's a hint though: I'm sure Rom Hunter would really love this one. Secret cutout of pic and blown up a lot is below.
I'm hoping to rebound from a disastrous first year, where, as you may remember, Zyx and Ants stunned the world with how crappy a 2600 game can be. Last year, I was just programming for a month when I started those games, but now, almost seven months later, I have learned so much about the inner mechanations of bBasic, my goal now is to not have the worst 2k program. I might try again with a Zyx 2, but for now, this is the only thing I'm letting slip. By the way, all my games this year will be 2k.

Billiards for bBasic is my next project once GoSub is done. I've been starting and tinkering around with the beginning of "bBilliards." I don't know how to make the ball go diagonally if it's hit by the cue ball at an angle, but I bet I'll figure something out, and if not, I'll go back to Maze of Pain . Here's a few screenies, I'll post the code once GoSub is finished.
Right now, it's kind of like a practice game where you can set up the balls anywhere you please. I tried to put three yellow balls on, but it got too complicated and I got a headache (literally.) To fire the cue ball, press fire & the direction you want it to go at the same time. There's a whole bunch of lines that don't work, but like I said, I'll post the code once GoSub is finished. And I hope GoSub does get finished.

Well, it seems I got really lucky with Blackjack. Among all the possibilities listed for Blackjack at the AA website, I got the rarest one, a Sears picture label. And since it's a rarity 4, it's tied for the second-most rare thing I have (#1 being Strategy X.) And why did it take me so long to find Football since it's a rarity 1? It's the first Football I've seen since I started collecting for this crazy system. And there's a little problem with Atlantis, though. I don't think it's anything serious, but there's a slight crackle when I stick it in and play it. The picture quality is OK, but was just wondering what that was all about. Expect an Arthur & the Invisibles review tomorrow.
  6. atari2600land
Finally I get lucky at these thrift stores! Imagine my surprise when I found about 10 carts laying there begging for an owner. I picked up Atlantis, Carnival, Human Cannonball, Football and Black Jack. With the purchase of Football, that completes all my rarity 1s and brings me to 97 Atari 2600 games total. And with the 6 I'm expecting in the mail, that'll get me past 100! Yay me! Also, I found Arthur and the Invisibles at K-Mart, so expect a review out of me soon.
  7. atari2600land
But, just to make sure, I'm going to both K-Mart to look at GBA games (and see if I can get my hands on a copy of either Polarium Advance and/or Arthur and the Invisibles for my chronogaming blog) and, what's next to K-Mart, a very handy Value Village (Goodwill-like store.) Last time I went there, they didn't have any 2600 games, but I did get a CIB Xevious for the NES, which I still have. Anyway, wish me luck!

Even I have some duplicates, and I'd like to get rid of them. They're all common, though. Missile Command, Super Breakout, Ms. Pac-Man, and Barnstorming (no label). I also have 1 Berzerk Sears and 1 Berzerk Atari, and I don't care which one goes. There's a whole bunch of rarity 2s I don't have but want, like 3D Tic-Tac-Toe, Crossbow, Galaxian, Golf, Gravitar, Kangaroo, Pele's Soccer, Phoenix, Realsports Baseball, Slot Racers, & Surround, and that's just the Atari-made ones. So if you want one of my 5 dupes, PM me and maybe we can work something out. Oh, and here's a binary file of Maze of Pain. It's not very interesting, though the title song I think is cool.
  9. atari2600land
...Well, most of the time it isn't, but sometimes it kicks me off the internet and when I try to log on, there's no dial tone. It isn't the computer's fault because we've had problems without it. So today (hopefully), we'll have the phone company look and see if they can fix it. And they said they'd be here from 8am to 8pm, so basically I have no idea. Anyway, since GoSub is nearing completion, I'm working on another project with a working title of "Maze of Pain" about a cat in a huge maze. It's like Super Maria Sisters all over again. Here's a few screenies.
Anyway, hopefully the huge major problem in GoSub we have left to tackle is what happens when the octopus touches the sub. After that, it should be pretty close to completion. (That is, if you all approve of it.)

EDIT: The phone guy came and fixed the phone. They have to come back in a week to bury a wire they just put in.

...but it didn't stick. In fact, it snowed a lot, but it couldn't stick because it was above freezing. But it might snow tonight, and it'll be freezing and below. It'll be interesting to see what is on my front yard, but it'll probably just be barkdust. I know it's really early, but I bought my mom a Valentine's Day present. (It's also something I really enjoy, and I'm using it right now.) I'm not saying what it is in the off-chance my mom is reading this blog (though she probably isn't.) Expect a GBA 2007 blog soon on Arthur and the Invisibles (unless my stupid GameStops don't carry it. I mistakenly called it by its British name "Arthur and the Minimoys" in my last blog )
  11. atari2600land
Probably not, but if it does, i'll be happy. They're predicting an inch tonight into tomorrow. And an inch is better than absolutely none. The cold arctic air is slow, as it hasn't come yet and it's 49 degrees. They say it will come overnight and i hope it's enough for snow that i get to see, whether it sticks or not. i wish i lived near the great lakes so i could see snow all the time during the winter. It's like a tropical forest over here where it hardly ever snows in the winter. And starting this weekend, I'll have a lot more time to devote to GoSub since my job training ends this week (hopefully.) A snow advisory is in effect from 6 AM to 6 PM tomorrow. We'll see how insane the National Weather Service is tomorrow.
  12. atari2600land
Here's a modified version in which the octopus stops once the sub touches it so you have a chance to get away. I can also put in a couple more levels. I'll be switching the sub to player1 and the octopus to player0 so the octopus will be above the sub. Do I give too much time for you to get away from the octopus?

EDIT: A newer version has been posted in the Homebrew Forum with the name gosub010907.bin
  13. atari2600land
I've discovered Rummy. It's a very cool game on Club House Games. Me and my mom used to play it, and now I can play it any time I want. Also, the threat of snow seems to be disappearing, although the arctic air is still coming in. That means sun and highs near 30 and lows near 15 for this weekend. Brr! Seems like I'll be inside playing Club House Games this weekend!
  14. atari2600land
Finally, after years of waiting, Nintendo released Mah-Jongg stateside! Not only that, but solitaire, poker, billiards, bowling, and a whole bunch of other games in the Clubhouse Games collection. I need to play it more, but the only ones I've played so far are Mah-Jong and Solitaire, and if the other games are as good as these, I recommend this pack.

As for the new news. They're going to close the street I live on for a couple nights. I don't know why they have to close the whole street down from Wal-Mart south. I guess the city didn't want Wal-Mart to lose any business (it's open 24 hours.) And, along with that, we might get snow on Wednesday or Thursday. Hopefully we get some, and this time it might accumulate a little! A big cold arctic air mass is coming our way and it's going to dip into Oregon this time. That might get pretty interesting.

I'm going to play every Game Boy Advance title from now until the very last one, which the GBA games will probably end this year, although I don't know why, I mean, Nintendo has been putting out new GBA games since the DS has come out. The only thing now that can trump the GBA is a new Game Boy, but many have said (and I believe this) the DS is the new Game Boy. Well, anyway, here's the first review: Rayman Raving Rabbids. You've heard me talk about it, now here's how I feel about it.

This game is difficult. Not in the sense that it's hard to get past stages, it's difficult in the sense that first you have to figure out what you need to do in order to pass the stage. For instance, at the level 2 boss, I fought for 15 minutes without going anywhere, until i found out that in order to beat the boss, you need to spit out gum on the bombs to make them stop, and then throw them at the rabbid thrice. What is a rabbid? Simply put, Ubisoft took out the t in the word "rabbit" and replaced it with a d. These things look a lot like rabbits, and not only that, they also eat carrots. Elmer Fudd would have a field day. Unfortunately, you're not Elmer Fudd, you're Rayman. And who is Rayman? A guy with no legs or arms. He does have hands and feet which float around mysteriously. You can throw your hands to catch onto things or throw your feet while hanging to free things from cages. And get this: You have infinite lives! While there is a "game over" screen, once you start up again, you're exactly back where you started from!

But while the game is innovative, and has great graphics, one thing fails to come to mind when playing this game, and that is fun. That's not to say that the game is funny, but if you're the kind of person who likes straightforward Mario-type platforms, don't get this. If you like confusing games where you don't have any idea what you're doing, by all means get it.

    pros:
    + Great Graphics
+ Saves level info even if you don't complete the level
+ Different costumes with different abilities

    cons:
    - I have no idea what to do sometimes
    - While trying to be innovative, it strays too far off the beaten path.
    - Infinite lives!

    ratings:
Graphics - 8.0 - Very nice for a GBA platformer. Once again, Ubisoft goes beyond the call of duty for Rayman.

Game Design - 3.0 - Getting stuck and trying to figure out what to do is by no means fun. They should have just made this a regular ol' platform game.

Fun - 2.0 - Not very in the least

    total: 4.0

    -
next game, either Arthur & the Minimoys or Dark Light (both due out in January.)
  16. atari2600land
    - The dog is feeling a bit better. He was able to jump on to Mom's lap last night where before he couldn't.

    - The trailer park where i live is going to remove the tree that fell near our house for free! Like Brak said, "Free? That fits my budget perfectly!"

    - And finally, I got a New Super Mario Bros. guide in the mail for renewing Nintendo Power. I don't really need it because I beat the game. It was the best free thing there.
  17. atari2600land
I finally figured out how to get past the spot I was stuck in in level 2 of Rayman Raving Rabbids for GBA. After trying different button combinations with various costumes, I figured out if you spit out gum in the black costume onto a stump, it turns into a bouncy thing, like a mushroom. That opened up new stages and now I'm at the boss of level 2. I don't even know why they bothered with lives because no matter how many times you get a game over, you start exactly in the same spot you were in.
  18. atari2600land
Our dog isn't feeling too well. He has little energy, and if I pick him up, he yelps. So we're working on the feeling that either his legs or the area near his legs are hurting. This has happened once before, but we thought we cured that when we started putting MSM in his food. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens with him. At least he's not dead.

And, the octopus in GoSub is almost fully realized. He grabs your ship and you can break free (if you're fast enough.) Check out the latest build in the Homebrew forum. One thing remains: Should the octopus go through the walls or not?

And, I also got 3 NES games on Sunday, bringing my total to 125! I also got 2 new Gamecube games (I've been neglecting it, I only have 7 games total for it!) Midway Arcade Treasures and Tetris Worlds. An interesting note on Tetris Worlds: The logo was designed by Roger Dean, the same guy who does the album covers of Yes.
  19. atari2600land
At least that's what I want it to do. The way it is now, if you touch the enemy sub, you die. But a few people complained (and I agree) that since it's moving randomly, you don't really have a chance to get away from it. So, I'm going to remove the brown enemy submarine and put in a brown enemy octopus and if it touches you, you have a chance to get away from it before you lose a life. So for now, I just put in a temporary octopus and added a crashing sprite. For now, the octopus is the same as the enemy sub, but that will change (hopefully).

Here's how I spent it: asleep. I went to sleep at 9 PM. I know I'm a party pooper, but I was sleepy, so I just did it. I woke up at about 8 AM, so 11 hours of sleep. Of course that'll have to be drastically cut to 8 or 9 hours tonight because I have to go to work tomorrow. And hopefully 2007 will bring us a completed GoSub in the AtariAge store.

Technically, the game I've been playing most is GoSub, but mainly for testing purposes.
  22. atari2600land
I decided to scrap the minigame idea because I couldn't get it working if my life depended on it. I have about 1K left for a minigame, so if anyone has any ideas, please tell me them. I'll finally have some time to work on the game this weekend.
  23. atari2600land
A Pink Floyd song that clocks in at 23 min. 28 sec. off the album I just bought (Meddle). Two reasons why I bought it: #1 is that song and #2: I like Pink Floyd. My favorite song off Meddle is San Tropez. Another album I bought yesterday was a jazz album and it had an 11 minute song on it. I thought "what the heck, it's only $6.50" and I like jazz. Only two more days until the new year. And, it's the weekend!
  24. atari2600land
There. I finally did it. I finally have 6 different GBA games for 6 different years the GBA has been around. And since Nintendo isn't going to introduce a new Game Boy any time soon, it looks like they're playing a game called "how long can we keep the GBA around until we need to introduce a new Game Boy?" It could probably take years, seeing as how the DS seems to have took the handheld crown. But the GBA is alive and kicking, and Rayman: Raving Rabbids proves it. Here's my opinion of the list of the best games of each year for the GBA so far:
2001 - Mario Kart: Super Circuit
2002 - Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World
2003 - Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3
    2004 - Donkey Kong Country 2
    2005 - Yoshi Topsy Turvy
    2006 - Rayman: Raving Rabbids

I've yet to play the Wii or DS version of RRR, but when I buy a Wii, I'll certainly pick it up if it has a platforming mode like the GBA version.
  25. atari2600land
Time to give out the honors. Nobody knows last year's winners except for me. Let's get 2005 out of the way first:

    2005-
    Best game: Mario Kart DS
    2nd Best game: Polarium
Best "retro" game (tie): Retro Atari Classics & Puyo Pop Fever
    Biggest surprise: Space Invaders Revolution
    Biggest disappointment: Pac-Pix
Best Use of Touch screen: Wario Ware: Touched! (narrowly beating out Trauma Center)

    Now here's the 2006 ones:
Best Game: New Super Mario Bros. (how could this *not* win? )
2nd Best Game: Kirby: Squeak Squad (narrowly beating out Super Princess Peach)
    best "retro" game: Tetris DS
Best title $20 and under: Break 'Em All
Best use of touch screen: Cooking Mama

I'm looking forward to 2007 for many reasons. #1: Will this be the last year that GBA games will be released? #2: Just how big will the hype be for the DS Zelda game? #3: Will this be the year that Diddy Kong Racing and Intellivision Lives! finally get released for the DS? We'll just have to wait & see.
