Went to Value Village earlier today, and there in the back next to some phones and crap, was a CIB Xevious for NES. This is the closest I've ever come to finding anything in stupid thrift stores. The box was kinda ripped in the bottom (which tends to happen to those small pieces of cardboard), and it came with an instruction booklet, so I decided, hey, I'll buy it. When I get to the checkout counter, it turns out everything is half price day, so instead of buying it for $5, it's only $2.50. Sweet! But geez, K-Mart was packed with people getting back-to-school stuff. Why wait until the last minute like this? The school supply list came out when, August? And school starts Wednesday! Well, to each their own, I guess. (By the way, Value Village is right next to K-Mart, so I decided, what the heck, I'll go into K-Mart and look for Halloween stuff. Aside from collecting Atari 2600 and NES games, I also collect Halloween stuff. My pride & joy is a pumpkin soap dispenser. You would think it'd be easy to find a Halloween soap dispenser, but it took about 2 Halloweens to find.)

For those who don't read the Atari 2600 BASIC forums, I've made a little game called "Space Bacon: When Pigs Fly." The question is, do you like it, and if you do, would you want it in stock at the Atari Age store? Take your time answering, because Albert's gone until the 15th. This is 4k, so it would only be $20, IIRC. Just wondering. Of course, please answer if you're one of those who buys every homebrew game. I'd like as much feedback as possible. And please remember that I've only been programming for only about a few months, so if there's anything to add, try not to make it too complex. I'd also like comments on the sfx, if there's any I should change or not. The noise when the pig gets hit is supposed to be a grunt.

I can't believe it's September already. August sure did go fast, didn't it? Well, anyway, went out shopping earlier and got a Queens of the Stone Age 33 RPM picture disc. It was weird, because it's the same size as a 45 rpm and so I started playing it at that speed and it sounded like girls were singing it. Since I've never heard of the band before, I thought girls *were* singing it (being as how the band is named Queens of the Stone Age) so I kept listening to it. Then, I tried lowering it to 33 RPM and it sounded much better. Why would a band put out a record shaped like a 45 rpm record but plays the same speed as a 33 1/3 rpm and then not tell you it's supposed to play at 33 1/3 rpm? Weird.

In case you're a Beck fan (and no, not Jeff Beck), he has a new album coming out on October 3. It's called "The Information." It has 15 tracks, and one of them is called "Cell Phone's Dead," which will be a single. This is Beck's 7th album on a major record label and 9th album on CD overall. Beck is a two-hit wonder (so far). You may remember "Loser" from 1994 and "Where It's At" from 1996. And he's still making music for his fans, one of which is me. I have all 8 Beck CD albums and he is such a wonderful performer who writes all his own songs and can play a variety of different instruments and song styles.

I really think yesterday's "Non Sequitur" comic strip really states about the state of my life right now. Nothing really all that much to talk about, except from the fact that some new (read: old, common for all you avid collectors) Atari 2600 games are coming my way thanks to a couple of nice people. I have no choice but to get them through the internet, because no used video game store stocks them anymore. Taped Jay Leno's headlines last night. He's finally back from reruns, and the funniest one was a classified ad that said "If you got hit in the head with a tomato back in the 1950's, please contact me." Why would you spend that money and actually think someone would contact this person? I mean, I bet lots of people got hit in the head with a tomato in the 1950's, especially if they were in that tomato throwing festival they have in Spain every year (I think this was an American newspaper, though). Butthead summed the state of the human race in a quote I use almost every day from "Beavis & Butthead Do America.": "Some people are stupid." I won't go so far as the H.L. Mencken quote about 95% of the people being stupid, but if this keeps up, in about 50 years, it'll probably be true. And I'll probably be in a nursing home saying stuff like "Back when I was a kid, people weren't as stupid! Get yourself to school! I had to walk 5 miles in the snow to get to school because my parents forced me to!"

There are some must-have DS games for my collection coming out in the coming months. I hope to get Yoshi's Island 2 for my birthday, but there's a couple more that I'd like to get to round out my collection a bit more once my b-day rolls around. BTW, this isn't a Wanted post because these games aren't even out yet. Star Fox Command, Mario Hoops 3 on 3, and of course the new Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. I have some DS games I don't even play, like Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Feel the Magic: XY/XX I never play and just bought them to collect. The ones I have and play most often are New Super Mario Bros. & Mario Kart DS. I play Mario Kart DS almost on a daily basis. I'll keep Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass in original shrinkwrap just to say 20 years from now if there's a DS Age that I have one of the most popular DS games CIB never opened. Hope to get Break 'Em All, a new DS game sometime this week because it's only $20 and I like block-breaking games such as Breakout, Alleyway, Arkanoid, etc. The one I want most of all and is out is Trauma Center: Under the Knife, but don't PM me looking to trade (unless you happen to like NES games, then a deal might be reached.)

...so I updated the program I made last night. It now pauses and makes a noise if you hit a wall (in addition to losing a life). And still no screen problems that I know of. Why would it be in Ants and not this? To play it again once the game is over, just press fire. That's right, we don't need no stinkin' reset switch. In other news, I'm going garage sale-ing tomorrow, and will visit a few right near each other near my grandpa's house (wouldn't have an excuse to if I wasn't visiting him). That's after I hit the used video game store in Keizer (I don't know why I use local geographical terminology, like someone who lives in Salem, Oregon is going to read this) to hopefully add to my NES collection (85 games and going strong) if I see any I want.

With the surprise announcement of two have-been-in-development-for-apparently-a-long-time games - MausBoy's Project Eden and super_dos_man's ET (which he wants to sell on a cart LOL) - I too have an announcement about a Batari BASIC project. And unlike all the other ones I've worked on, this one will be poked, prodded, primped and tweaked until the very finish. If there is still a 4K category in next year's MiniGame Compo, I'll put it on there the second I know that the 2007 one is under way. I'll release the title in a couple months, and hopefully, it'll be a shock to all of you. (that's me, Mr. Shock ) Meanwhile, Mike Rideout and Sudoku are MIA after weeks of no replies to the topic. Hopefully he's still working on it. If he ever gets done with it, I might think of buying a cart of it. There's a GBA game with a random Sudoku puzzle compiler, but one on the Atari 2600, yowza!

If anyone has some spare duplicates of Night Driver, Frogger or Football that they want to get rid of, I'll be happy to take them off your hands for you. I'd ask for more rarer things, but these are the only rarity 1s I don't have yet. Was DXing last night and got a radio station from Vancouver BC, CKWX 1130 AM. I had to look up the call letters because they didn't say them on the air. They just kept saying News1130. Canada's weird. I've been to Victoria once, but I don't remember that much because I was a kid. This radio station kept saying it was 20 degrees. I knew they were talking Centigrade, but it would be a bit confusing for someone from Portland tuning in and finding out it was 20 degrees in Vancouver, they'd be like "I know it's cold in Canada, but I didn't know it was that cold!" if they didn't know that Canada uses the metric system. I'd like America to use it, I'd think it'd be kind of cool to be like the rest of the world, but we're stuck using this stupid base 12 type of measurement. It's supposed to be about 32-34 degrees here, that's hot, if you're using centigrade. I'd say Celsius, but I don't think they want us using that term anymore, and centigrade makes more sense, with the centi prefix meaning "ten." Just so you know, 0 degrees Centigrade (Celsius) is 32 degrees Fahrenheit (freezing). I don't know exactly what the incriments are, but I have this Game Boy game pak that converts metric to English measurements (Infogenius French Translator).

I know two of the Sega games I'm going to get next time I go to the used video game store. I saw Aaah! Real Monsters (which has to be the very first video game ever made if you put them in alphabetical order, unless you count 'Nickelodeon's' before it.) and an interesting cart of Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits. Interesting because I looked it up on Digital Press and it said the game was only released in Europe and a rarity 5. Does this game have a different name in the States or what? And can an American Sega play European Sega games? I ask because I have a Japanese Game Boy cartridge that I can play in an American Game Boy. It's a very weird game. The label says "World Bowling" but once you put it in, the title says "(Japanese word) Time" and it's a pachinko(sp?) game. I now have 302 games in my entire video game collection: (rounded numbers) 85 NES, 60 GB, 50 Atari 2600, 5 GC, 24 Sega Genesis, 22 N64, 3 GBC, 16 SNES, and 32 DS.

You can't really 'create' a Game Genie code. You actually discover it, because all the codes are already created. You just have to find out which codes do crazy things and which ones don't. So here we go (SMB1 for NES):
ATPAUY - Mario doesn't earn any points!
LLPOKG - start on world 4-2, warp to impossible to beat world
YYPOKG - start on underwater 1-2
KTIPEK - Black and white world except for pipes and trees are orange. Mario walks until he reaches a pipe and is stuck.
IIPOPK - Brick floor with no background
PSILUV - Once you hit a ? box with a coin in it, the box disappears!
NNINTV - Beep starts each level. Land music is the same, but no music plays in caves, and a high-pitched never-ending beep in the water worlds.
NATUTV - Slow Mario, jumping on enemies kills you!
STYYLY - 1-1 has weird music. At the end of level 1-1, end music plays, game freezes.
_TPAUL - Fill in space with different letters and you get a variety of different squares as your background.
POEYPO - Mario is invincible, but you can't see him!
YEAAAA - This makes the stuff that happens in the PIGPOG code look normal. We're talking weird stuff, background color changes, numbers flooding the screen, making the game slow down a LOT. If at first, it freezes after a little bit, try it again because the stuff it does is random.
GAYSUK - On a ledge, get a running start and you can run off the ledge in mid-air!
I don't think these codes are anywhere else, so there. I can always try & discover more if you people like these.

I went to the used video game store earlier and got 3 NES games and a Game Genie for Game Boy. I have been looking for one of these for a very long time and I finally found one. Take Kirby's Dream Land 2, for instance. I couldn't get past level 2. Now with this thing, I just got to level 6. It came with a little instruction book, but it's falling apart (it had T-Z missing when I bought it, but I don't care because anyone can get Game Genie codes off the internet, plus it's the first edition so it doesn't have many of my favorite games.) There were three or four Atari 2600 games, down a couple from last month, but I didn't buy them because I already have them plus I don't want to spend the extra money for a game I already have. I've got to go and beat Kirby's Dream Land 2 now.

...well almost, but it's certainly going to be. But what I need in order to actually sell this is 9 people to buy it. That's it. Just 9. I already have one confirmed, so it's actually 8. So the big question is, if Super Maria Sisters were on sale for $13, would you buy it? (The person who bought it for the $20 price will get an automatic $7 rebate, in case he's reading this.) If not, what would you change? E-mail me or give me a PM if interested. I've only got about 1k left to neaten up some things, like the title screen, the 'level 1' screen, the 'level 2' screen and the 'you win' screen. The Maria sprite has been redone to look more like a person instead of a bunch of squares. There's a blue star to make you really big, and a green star to make you really tiny, both in level 2. So come on and help make Super Maria Sisters a reality.

Not really anyone in the Atari community, Bob Thaves, creator and drawer of the comic strip "Frank and Ernest" passed away yesterday at 81. One of the few comic strips I ever read, Bob will be surely missed by me and thousands of his comic's readers. His son will continue the strip, but it will never be the same without Bob's funny take on the world today. BTW, the other comic strips I read are Garfield (and Jim Davis is hanging in at age 61 or so), Mother Goose and Grimm (around the same age for Mike Peters), and Blondie (yes, Blondie. It's funny. Deal with it.) A couple months ago, the newspaper changed the comics around and finally got around to dropping Gasoline Alley (yes, can you believe it? A newspaper had Gasoline Alley in 2006!) and also dropped Frank and Ernest. I filled in the comic survey, and I put Frank and Ernest near the top of the comics to keep, and even though it wasn't top 5 in the most liked or least liked, they dropped it anyway. But what's even weirder is they still have it on Sunday. Oh well, my newspaper is stupid.

Well, blue records anyway. I thought I could keep collecting picture 45s, but after seeing the prices on some of them, like a couple of Queens of the Stone Age ones asking for about $8 or 9, I decided screw this, and so I started collecting blue vinyl. Why blue? Because blue is my second-favorite color (after black, but all records are black.) Which is how I found this neat little band called The Outside Inside, which did classic-sounding surf rock-n-roll Beach-Boys type rock in the 90s. Both songs on the 45s are instrumentals, so it's kinda like crossing the Ventures with Green Day. Green Day should make a green vinyl record. That would be cool. And they could release it on St. Patrick's Day. But enough about my "clever" marketing skills, I was watching a biography on Steve Wozniak, and I had no idea he programmed Breakout before he co-founded Apple. Must be the arcade version because I checked out the Breakout listing and the closest thing to Wozniak was Steve Jobs, which was the other co-founder of Apple (most of you computer geeks are saying "Well, duh!") They interviewed Wozniak for his own biography (how thoughtful ) but I don't think I ever saw Steve Jobs interviewed, which is weird. By the way, it was on tape, so it's not like you missed it recently or anything. Man, if I had $50 million, I sure wouldn't blow $5 or 6 million in losses holding a couple of rock concerts. Oh well, guess he's living the sweet life, just because he and Gates happened to be interested in the right things at the right time. Too bad all of us homebrewers don't have a few million.

Tomorrow (which is about 3 minutes from now), if I feel up to it, I thought I'd go down to the record store and see if I can add to my picture 45 RPM record collection. Right now I have 3: 2 Beck (Girl, E-Pro) and 1 Weezer (Beverly Hills). Hopefully, there will be a lot more. Sometimes I buy 10 inch 33 RPMs even though I never heard of the band before if they're cheap. That's how I discovered the Mr. T Experience. Nice band. They did a cover of a Sesame Street song (Up and Down) on their album Big Black Bugs Bleed Blue Blood. Well, tomorrow I'll tell you which records I bought (if any.)

After the first airing of the "new" Pee-Wee's Playhouse on Cartoon Network, I've decided that I liked the old version better. That fat lady who was always snooping has been replaced by a less fat woman. Dixie is gone! The King of Cartoons is a different black guy and the flowers announce he's coming! No sign of Captain Carl, the playhouse gang, Gladys, the picture phone, the salesman, and the dinosaur family yet. The episode that just aired was they were redecorating the playhouse, and introduced Floory, Clocky, and the soccer-playing dude. This "new" batch says © 1987 Paul Reubens, instead of © 1986 Pee-Wee Productions. New season. Ulg. Well, at least they kept the Penny cartoons. I've been taping this ever since it came on July 12. If they air all of them, I won't have to buy both DVD sets! Woo! I might just save $100! And, Pee-wee should have had an Atari 2600 game. It was the right time frame (1986-90, late in the Atari 2600's life, but still...) That would have been so cool! Make it like an Adventure hack or something, and have Randy as an enemy. And have the seperate rooms, have one with Pterry, have one with Chairy, etc.

Yep, that's Paction's new slogan. A bit childish on the humor side, but it's the only clever thing i could come up with with a name like "Paction." Hopefully will be done by November 2 (my birthday, BTW), so I can maybe get it burned onto a cartridge as a birthday present. Hey, if you like my games, Super Maria Sisters is still for sale. Check out the Aegis Games website at http://www.atari2600land.com/aegis/ and who knows, maybe if I sell enough copies, I'll get myself a DVD burner And admit it, you laughed at the slogan.

I love collecting Atari 2600 games, but it looks like I bought all of them in my area. There doesn't seem to be any left. Sure wasn't very many. I only bought 50 of them. So, I've gone back to collecting NES games. I added 3 to my total (Breakthru, Castlevania 3 and Startropics. I also got Werewolf, the chip is fine but the cartridge is broken) for a total of 81. I have almost 300 video games total. I watched Robot Chicken last night. I was going to see that show on at 12:15am, but I was too busy here and lost track of the time. And it's getting hard to think of clever titles for these blogs.

Well, the overnight stay at my Dad's house was interesting to say the least. I got Castlevania 1 for Game Boy because he took me to a Game Crazy. We watched Cops on Court TV, then a bit of Emerill, and then we both went to sleep. That's right, I fell asleep at about 9 PM! I don't know why I browse the forums at 1 in the morning because nobody's ever on them that late. Oh well, I guess I'm addicted Well, back to work. Got some forum reading to do.

I'll be staying at my dad's apartment again tonight, and he doesn't have any internet access, which means I won't be up until 3am looking at the forums like I usually am. So I won't be able to answer anything starting at about 4 pm Pacific (7 pm Eastern, midnight England), but when I get home tomorrow, I'll be glad to answer any PMs, e-mails or topic replies that might have come while I'll be away. Just thought you might like to know.
The weather is supposed to be cool this weekend (low to mid 70s), so it's a welcome relief from the mid to upper 80s I'm having right now.

First, the lies. Lie #1: There is nothing about sex in this blog. Lie #2: The weather report. Yesterday, the high was supposed to be 90. Finally, a nice change from being 105, right? Wrong. They were 10 degrees off. It was 100 again. Why can't these stupid weather forecasters get stuff right ONE DAY LATER?
Lastly, the Atari 2600 game. There's only one. And it's "Ants." I got 8 Bit Classics to turn my best 2006 Minigame Competition game into an actual cartridge. And they did for $17 ($15 + $2 S&H.) And for a really small company, they do a really great job. The label is outstanding and the game works really well. I didn't get a chance to play it all that much because I had to sit in front of the fan because it was 100 today. If tomorrow is 90 like they say it will, I'll play it a lot.

If Satan exists, I really think he wouldn't keep hell at more than 100. Well, yesterday it was 105. That's right, in Oregon. Not Eastern Oregon, but Western Oregon. And I am sick. Literally sick. The heat made me sick, it made my pets sick, it made my mom sick. Between me getting sick and sitting in front of a fan all day, I started work on a sequel to Super Maria Sisters even though the first one might not be done just yet. See the topic "Super Maria Sisters 2" in the Atari 2600 BASIC forum. I don't know how that guy in Arizona can stand 117, even with an air conditioner. And without an air conditioner here in a mobile home, the temperature got into the mid 90s IN THE HOUSE. Honestly, I don't know why all my vinyl records didn't melt. Well, the heat advisory just ended 2 hours ago (it's 1 am as I'm writing this, because it's too hot to sleep.) and today's high is supposed to be around 90. I think this is the first time I'm grateful that it's going to be 90. I kept sweating and my head kept hurting, and I'm still sweating and I'm still sick from the heat, as it's about 75 degrees now (just checked the Weather Channel). I hate summer. I've always hated summer. I want it to be winter, so I can be cold. Going out in the rain in the upper 30's without a shirt on, man, that'd be nice.

The heat has gotten to me. It went inside my brain and completely fried it. So, why is there nothing but sex on TV? And why is it so hot? It's 10pm here and 86 degrees outside. Why? It probably didn't get to 100 today, but it sure felt like it. And not only that, it rained! And not just a little bit. A little more than a little bit. And I managed to make a multicart of Ants and Star Box, even though nobody has replied to most of my games I post on the Atari 2600 Basic forums. Why? Is it because they're stupid games or what? People really seem to be interested in Super Maria Sisters, which is kinda weird. Stupid excessive heat warning. Lasts until 11PM Sunday! One more day. Can I make it without dying? Tune in tomorrow.

I'm making a new platform game called Super Maria Sisters for the 2600. I know that name has probably been used for a lot of things, but oddly, a search for a video game named that turned up nothing. Living in the Northwest, I've been spoiled by all the below 90 degree weather I've been having while the rest of the United States has been burning. Well, it's our turn to fry tomorrow when the temperature gets near 100. And Friday & Saturday are both going to be in the triple digits. So there. Yay.
