  1. I'm a teenager. I just got into Atari, because it's so bizarre. I've been playing a bunch of ROMs and going to look for an actual system at Flea Markets, Goodwill, Garage Sales, etc. this week. I really like how the limitations on the size of the game reality and the way it's displayed, put so much emphasis on how you interact with it. I've never played a game like Crazy Climber, Room of Doom, or Stampede before.

I'm also trying to learn how to write games for it. Trying . . .

Check out the Atari 2600 Basic forum at http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?act=SF&f=65

    It helps me out tons!

  2. For a program to qualify for the 2K category, the BIN file must be 2K. I don't know if bB has an option to produce 2K binaries, but given a binary that starts with 2K worth of zeroes it's generally easy enough to create a 2K binary. On the other hand, I don't know how much useful bB code you could get in a 2K cart, given the overhead imposed by bB itself.

So is every program made by Batari 4k, or just ones that take up more than 2k? Cuz I found a Batari Basic program submitted last year and it was under the 4k category.

  3. On a special on video games on PBS, they said that in the early days of video games, because they shot aliens in them, moronic pc people would be worried that if aliens did come here, we would shoot them cuz that's what they did in the video game. I bet they were talking about Space Invaders. Isn't that stupid?

  4. I was playing SMB2 a little while ago and it struck me that the intro level for 1-1 (the falling part before the first door) may be possible to program for the Atari 2600. There's no screen-scrolling, the background is black, and with these pictures = gray line - top/bottom screen borders, stick in my sprite for a Shyguy and copy the sprite of Mario from Donkey Kong, and this could be playable. What do you think?

  5. I live in a town with a metro population of about 150,000. And for some reason, I have a heck of a time finding any Atari 2600 cartridges. Up until September of 2005, it was virtually impossible. In September, there was an Atari 2600 and games up for sale for $50 at a local used game store, and I snatched it up. Since then, I've been only finding new games periodically. Who lives in a smaller area like this and has less of a hassle then I do finding Atari 2600s at used game stores and garage sales, and can I move there?

  6. As for losing a life, I've added that to this next version. There's 4 lives. As for making the bananas scroll faster with time, I have no idea how I would do that, cuz I'm a newbie. If someone would examine the .bas file and post a reply with code (and line #s so I know where to put it), that'd be nice.

    zyx.bas

    zyx.bin

  7. Oh, I should have mentioned, but maybe you should consider doing awards in addition or instead of a hall of fame. Something like they do now on Spike tv. Best graphics, best sound, best music, best play, most addicting, most original, etc. Again, I suggest doing this by year with several candidates and only 1 winner.

    Phil

OK, forget the hall of fame thing. As for the awards idea, isn't that more of a suggestion for the Stan awards?

  8. Tell me why this code doesn't work:

    10 set smartbranching on
    1000 x = 30 : y = 60 : a = 150 : b = 60
    1005 player0x = x : player0y = y : player1x = a : player1y = b
    1010 COLUBK = 28 : COLUPF = 0 : COLUP0 = 64 : COLUP1 = 128
    1013 player0:
     %11111000
     %11111000
     %00110000
     %00111110
     %00110000
     %11111000
     %11111000
     %00000000
    end
    1016 player1:
     %00011111
     %00011111
     %00001100
     %01111100
     %00001100
     %00011111
     %00011111
     %00000000
    end
    1025 drawscreen
    1030 if joy0left then x = x - 1
     if x<30 then x = 30
     if x>150 then x = 150
    1040 if joy0right then x = x + 1
     if x<30 then x=30
     if x>150 then x=150
    1050 if joy0up then y=y-1
     if y<10 then y=10
     if y>85 then y=85
    1060 if joy0down then y=y+1
     if y<10 then y=10
     if y>85 then y=85
    1070 if joy1left then a = a - 1
     if a<30 then a = 30
     if a>150 then a = 150
    1080 if joy1right then a = a + 1
     if a<30 then a=30
     if a>150 then a=150
    1090 if joy1up then b=b-1
     if b<10 then b=10
     if b>85 then b=85
    1110 if joy1down then b=b+1
     if b<10 then b=10
     if b>85 then b=85

    1120 goto 1005

    It doesn't know what joy1left, joy1right, joy1down, or joy1up is!

  9. Is the CBS Electronics the same as the CBS Network? Why not make a Saturday animated series of Blueprint or something to boost sales for their games?

And 20th Century Fox shoulda made a Simpsons 2600 game before it went defunct.

  10. {E.T.} was released in 1982 and would be available to vote on next year if this continues.
    Pitfall was released in 82.

Maybe there should be a list of eligible games added to the first post...

Basically, anything 1981 and before. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all.

  11. I can't do this for Crystal Castles because it won't fit in a run-of-the-mill Pac-Man cart.

Yes you can, all you have to do is snap off 2 tabs inside the cart.

Maybe you should rename your handle to "atariquestions". LOL

Wow. Never thought of that before. I put it in a former Combat cartridge.

And I would change my handle, but then I'd have to start over again at 0 posts. LOL

  12. I only have one Atari 2600, and I'm lucky to even have it. There were a couple ColecoVision games for sale in my used video game store I go to, but I can't buy them without a ColecoVision console, which there wasn't.

My RealSports Football cart didn't even fit, so I swapped it for another cart. I can't do this for Crystal Castles because it won't fit in a run-of-the-mill Pac-Man cart.

  13. Wouldn't this be better done as a regular thread?

OK. Ignore the poll and just tell me your picks.

I killed the poll option for you so people could list as many games as they want.

They have to be made in 1981 or before, though.
